United KingdomCan I have a vent....
Hmmm...it could just be the company I work for but I didn't need to give any medical information to get Nicky covered.

In the past several months I lost 30 lbs through weight watchers...it was an excellent program that emphasized portion control instead of cutting out certain foods (especially sweets...my downfall ;-). I know a lot of people reacted quite negatively (and to be fair the person who posted about weight loss perhaps didn't approach the subject in the best way) but it will impact your life in many more positive ways than just being eligible for insurance. The confidence you gain from taking control of that aspect of your life will help you in other areas too.

Anyways, I just noticed how old this thread is and I wish you the best with your insurance endeavors!

give me some scenarios. :s lol

would just tell him to come visit after he sends packet & then we can mess with the birth certificate...but this late in the game would also be risky, no? he doesn't have a job anymore or family in the same area...so strong ties would be a tough one!

apparently, dna testing (online ordering) can be done in a few days...inquiring if it's the same for international though...awaiting their reply!

You can get the DNA test for free if you go on either Maury Povich or Jeremy Kyle devil.gif laughing.gif

I would contact your local county clerk to see how (and if) you can go about adding the father to the certificate for your child. I don't think the father needs to be present in most cases.

The USA seems generally to be more tolerable of online relationships.

Does anyone remember the first time they met there SO in the USA, how easy was it to get threw customs? It was alot simpler than I thought it would be, infact my third time there I took a grilling from the lady at customs when she asked how we met , and I said online, I wasnt going to lie I just wanted to see my man again.

Stevens first trip here he also took a grilling, the customs guy at Glasgow airport called me on my mobile to ask if I knew him, and what we were going to do!.

We also looked into ways to be together without marriage at first, right now the time is perfect, I have just graduated college and the only ties I have to my bonnie country is my family and friends, no financial ties etc;.

How long has everyone been with there SO? (dating/engaged I mean, not how long have you known each other)

We've known eachother since February 2005, so a little over 3 years. We didn't really fall in love until July 2006, and to be honest we didn't really formally date...he came over in November 2006 for a few months (where he asked me to be his gf in person) and then January 4, 2007 he proposed.

Yeah - when I flew over in Feb I got stung real bad on luggage from the UK to DUB on Ryanair...

I know that feeling i wont get caught out by that again though. I nearly booked to fly out of shannon so we can do immigration in ireland and celebrate on the plane until i realised how screwed i would be on the Ryanair/Aerarran/whatever flight.

Just to give everyone faith in humanity when DW flew in to the uk after she was refused a visa for Ireland the last leg of the Journey was a ryanair flight and bless her she was tired and upset and just wanted to get home to me, but she gets to the ryanair desk with her bags, one large one carry on Dude weighs it and looks at DW and says you know this is overweight right? DW is nearly in tears as we have no money having just done a emergency exit from Ireland. Dude says im not going to tell you how much it is im just putting it on now go quick.

So heres to the ryanair guy smile.gif

Refused a visa into Ireland? Why??? In my experience I don't even get stamped half the time going through there (I've probably visited/been through a good dozen times). The longest time I spent in passport control was 5 minutes b/c the agent saw I was from Chicago and asked me if I knew his cousins and if I had ever been to the GAA field in Tinley Park.

Anyways...I <3 the Irish. In general the nicest group of people I've ever come across...it doesn't surprise me the ticket agent did that.

Sometimes Aer Lingus has UK to IE flights that are quite comparable to Ryanair. I think you have to get a bit lucky and plan far in advance, but you won't get dinged as heavily having overweight baggage going via Aer Lingus than Ryan Air.

True story.

I was in Subway in MA last year and ordered my sandwich.. the woman behind the counter then asked Bill (my fiancee) "is it from London?" He replied "excuse me?" and she repeated it and added "my friend is from London and speaks like that." I asked Bill under my breath if I looked like a potted plant and if she knew that I spoke English. She then asked if "it was staying or just visiting"!!

We just looked at each other and burst out laughing!!

She referred to you as "it"?!?!?!? I'm suprised the woman has any friends alone a Brit friend.

Aly, I swear we were doing a total pisstake and talking to each other with the accents...this lady just overheard us. That is really pathetic when you do that to pretend you are something you are not. Pathetic yet hilarious though... devil.gif

Has anyone else had any experiences of Americans putting on English accents to sound cool? I went to Disneyland and a lady came up to me and asked if she could help, and I said I was just looking (in the store). She scurries away and Jeremy is killing himself laughing and asks me if I heard her accent. I said I did and that she just sounded a bit weird - I figured it was an accent from a part of the US I hadn't been to before because she sounded American still. He then told me she was trying to put on an English accent and as soon as she heard me speak she was obviously embarrassed and ran away laughing.gif

That is entirely too funny...you would think she would know better than to get away with that, esp at a huge tourist attraction. If I had been there I would have likely to have been carried out of the park rofl.gif

LMAO...my best friend and I would put on faux Brit accents when I lived back in Nebraska (even funnier she is Asian...so she would get REALLY odd stares). Since I look very British/Irish myself, I could get away with it.

One time we were in Gordman's department store and we were talking to each other in faux brit. This lady comes up and says she loves our accents and proceeds to ask questions about our "lives"...I mean a complete conversation and she wouldn't go away. Basically we had to make up an entire backstory...I think Laya said something like she was an interior designer from Manchester who specialized in designing office cublicles or some BS like that. I think I said I was studying abroad at the University of Nebraska (I wasn't really lying...it was the abroad part that was incorrect!). As you can see Laya is much more creative than I am when put on the spot!

For some reason, bright red hair (from a bottle may I add, and obviously so, this colour is NOT found in nature! lol), blue eyes and a "funny" accent must mean I'm Irish.

For some reason (and this seems to happen in Glasgow in particular) people think I'm Aussie or Canadian. I can see where they can get Canadian/American accents mixed up, but Aussie???

Thanks for this information though, I'll definitely keep checking it and comparing it. smile.gif

Have you tried Aer Lingus? Flying out of Dublin typically is cheaper than direct UK flights. Plus most US flights can go through US passport control in Dublin...so once you get off the plane in Boston you just get your luggage and you are out. To get to Dub just book a Ryan Air flight.

I would much prefer to go direct rather than stop off at Dublin... not only is it quicker but sometimes I've found really cheap flights from London. £270 last time, with Virgin Atlantic too! smile.gif

The flights don't seem so cheap through Aer Ligus either as it seems to be done as two expensive singles instead. Thanks though, it's something else to keep an eye on.

I guess Aer Lingus is sometimes finiky. I admit I got a better deal with BA last time I flew to the UK...and it was definitly a nicer flight than Aer Lingus.

Though I admit that part of the reason I fly into Dublin is so I can go into town for a few hours between flights.

I want to say it was about 5 years ago and the Vicki's stores decided to discontinue selling sizes larger than a C cup (though the larger sizes would still be online or in a catalog). There was a huge backlash...women organized and sent letters and petitions to them complaining that it was discriminatory. So they brought them back.

I've been hearing lately that Nordstrom has an excellent bra department and the staff is supposedly better trained than your usual Vicki's employee. Another one I heard is good is Soma.

So she asked me what size I wore and I told her 34G - she looked at me like I was stupid until she tried me on a 36D - I humoured her and tried it on, pulled down my top and walked out of the changing room looking like a cow with udders!!! rofl.gif She got me an F cup then which was as big as they went then just kept increasing the back size until I had no support at all - it was hilarious! Some stores are hopeless at assessing bra sizes!

The best fit I have had was by a lady who, after measuring my back, gauged the cup size just by looking. I've heard other people say the same; measurements alone can't give the right size (as cup size is also determined by how broad/deep you are) and that it takes someone with a skilled eye to fit you properly. Of course, it's made even more complex by stores having different bra sizes.

We have a store in town that measures and fits you by just looking. I have yet to try it out as their bras are like £50.

I honestly believe when you go bra shopping - and this applies even more when you are older than 21 and have anything larger than a C cup - to just spend the money on a really good bra. Most of my bras I tend to have for several years until they are too ratty to wear anymore. So to me dropping $60-$70 is worth it if it will last me a while, fits the puppies and generally makes me feel sexy.

Anyways, is it just me or is it really hard to find cute bras in anything larger than 36C? I get so down going to Vicki's (as we call Victoria's Secret at work). The super sexy cute stuff isn't in my size...they have to pull out the beige colored ox harness out of a drawer for me to try on. I'm sorry, but I think more endowed women should feel sexy too!

Well knowing that now I would absolutely HATE to have the first name Beverley!

My ancestors came from Pembrokeshire in Wales...of course the grandma from Beverley (I paid attention!), and a great great grandfather from London who at 13 hopped on board a ship as a stow away and ended up in Texas...and had a town named after him there. Haven't been able to trace the Irish family as much...seems like the records have been hard to come by but I did find some family coming over during the famine and settling in Des Moines of all places. Apparently he painted portraits and eventually become a photographer.

I have some Czech roots as well, but that is for a different forum wink.gif

Yes the brits are a mixed lot. Lots of Viking and Norman in the mix. A lot of Irish too...but even then the Irish are a mixed bunch.

another thing is that briitish fish and chips are not the same all over britain.

In lancashire they hardly exist and they are just soggy and sold from chinese restaurants using the same oil as the spring rolls

on the east coast in the north they have skin on

In the south they are mostly cod

The best in the world are Greengates in Bradford, Yorkshire - which are haddock done in beef dripping with plain batter

I will be there in 1 week for a week and I intend to have them EVERY day !

Fish shop vinegar is unmalted, supermarket vinegar is malted

Some supermarkets advertise 'unmalted vinegar fish shop style' eg morrisons

American fish and chips are the worst in the world being frozen breaded triangles

I went to a 'british fish and chip shop' here in washington state and almost threw up - it was disgusting

They had a British Union flag flying outside and it was all Britishified - but same old same old junk

I have to say for the most part I've never encountered the "triangles" outside of school lunches. The pubs generally do a good job of getting more traditional type fish...then again most pubs are owned by expats!

Up where Nicky is from (north Northumberland) it is quite good, as he comes from a coastal town and the fish is ultra-fresh. Midwest living doesn't lend to having terribly fresh fish unless you want to pay lots of money at a nicer restaurant. But the Fish Keg was relatively fresh and inexpensive for the quality.

i lived in Milwaukee for a year on and off and never saw anything better than edible

No way can you get fresh haddock or even cod in the mid west - its a 4 hour flight due east of here

But the secret is in the dripping and they just don't do it

Scarborough/whitby/nothumberland as it is stright out of the north sea or has been kept on ice (not frozen) from icelandic waters and is excellent as you say - but they do leave the skin on at the seaside towns and leave the bones in too very often

I once worked in Leeds and had fish and chips every lunch for 18 months !

I like em

i grew up 800 yards from harry ramsden's the biggest f &c shop in the world when it was maginificent

I paid 1 shilling and 10pence when every other shop was one and tuppence

I wouldn't eat em for free now they are a multinational and its awful - the price does not matter - total junk

My American wife is a huge fan of Yorkshire fish and chips

I don't think I've come across the fish with the skin on but once. But the chippy we usually go to in Berwick has a wide variety...maybe Nicky will jump online and add his 2 pence.

My paternal grandmother is from Beverly...I would imagine the fish and chips would be excellent there.

Well Milwaukee...I'm sure all you ever saw for fish there was carp or catfish!

Well Milwaukee...I'm sure all you ever saw for fish there was carp or catfish!

another thing is that briitish fish and chips are not the same all over britain.

Nicky and I finally found a chippy-esque place in Chicago. It's in the weirdest of places too...it's "in da hood" and not someplace I'd go late at night.

The Fish Keg

It's not exact, but according to Nicky on a 100 scale (100 being true Brit style FNC) they are about an 85. Only thing is you have to bring your own malt vinegar. But like a true chippy this place is completely take away...they have a couple picnic tables in a dodgy looking lot next door, but no place to sit inside.

A little research has revealed that it was the Rose & Crown and is now closed!

Ok...it changed to the Bridget O'Neill's a few years before I moved. Yeah I've been there a few times...not only did I live a few blocks from there on Clark but I had a friend who lived in the building across the street and we'd go there for the odd pint.

Isn't there a place called the Rose or something on Belmont? Never tried it, but I know some people who love it

The Melrose perhaps? It's like a little old skool greasy spoon diner. I've never ate there, but I've heard it is comparable to Clark's or The Golden Nugget.

Real fish and chips seem to be rarer than rocking horse manure here in the US. Good luck in your quest!

LMAO! "Rarer than rocking horse sh*t"...I actually spit out my Mountain Dew! That is a great one...I'm going to have to use that line in the future.

Chicago isn't bad for fish and chips, but no proper chippys which surprises me with all the Irish/British expats that live around here. I imagine in the right location they would get insane business.

Places I reccomend for fish n' chips in the Windy City

Johnny O'Hagan's - This is where we had our wedding reception. And let me tell you....they were beyond fantastic. The food was delicious, the bartender was a good ole' Galway boy and the ambiance just all around great. But the manager and staff went above and beyond to make our wedding reception special. Plus, the fish n' chips are great to boot. Oh, and look out for the waiter who is a dead ringer for a young Roger Daltrey.

Duke of Perth This restaurant goes on a Scottish theme. Their menu is fairly small but it's pretty good. The decor is a bit more authentic than some of the other Irish/Scottish bars I've been to in Chicago.

Abbey Pub We've never been to the restaurant but we've had their fish n' chips at the Taste of Chicago and at the IAHC Irish Fest last weekend. This is as close to a proper chippy type meal as we have got so far. Oddly enough they used the fish triangles at the taste but a more proper cod type fish at Irish Fest...maybe they thought at Irish Fest they ought to be more authentic?

Wilde's This is an upscale type Irish Restaurant/Pub...so expect to pay a bit more. But the food is amazing and the ambiance is classy without being intimidating. My favorite thing about this place is the "library" area where you can sit with a pint and read the works of the great Irish authors like Joyce, Wilde, and Beckett.

The concern is that you might have some extended in the family but don't know whether or not you do? Like the others have said, it's unlikely that they'll ask, but if they do, you can very honestly say, "Not that I know of." smile.gif

no, well extended as far as i'm concerned that my dads half sister, emigrated there so i am told unsure.gif and i know nothing of address marrital name or anything.

Well, in that case, you can just say you think someone on your dad's side of the family immigrated to the US but you don't know anything about her. smile.gif Again, I really doubt it will come up.

Lonestar, I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate.

What does that make us?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!

Sorry, just having a Space Balls moment whistling.gif

No, I don't think the London embassy worries too much about that. They are more concerned about your OH's finances.
