I have to ask though, what is the obsession in America with that horrible metal fencing? You see it in a lot of places and it's really fugly. Perhaps coming from the UK I'm spoilt and used to nice wooden fences! laughing.gif

If anyone has the answers, please send them on a postcard to....

LOL...it's to keep the dogs and kids in. Or perhaps keep them out. Im not for sure if they think dogs/kids can chew through wooden fences here?

Welcome to the US Poiteen.

I concur, hold off on driving lessons here until you get to LA. You can take practice tests online in some states. Generally you have to be a resident of said state to get a DL, so I'm not sure (as I don't know your situation) if you would be eligible or not. You usually don't need to take tests or anything to get a learner's permit as long as you are a resident.

All this talk of Dollar stores makes me envious, all we have in plymouth is crappy poundstretcher and so nasty pound shops. blink.gif

Oh I live in Dollar Store Heaven. Nasty Family Dollar, some dollar store without a name, Mr. Dollar (which this morning had a cat sleeping in the window...I wonder if it was only $1?), random Mexican dollar store, dollar store that is likely a front for some sort of raquetteering scheme...

In my neighborhood there is no shortage of Dollar Stores and Taquierias!

The dreadmill! I'll have to use that.

I got called for jury duty in Michigan and had to do a slip and fall case for some lady who was suing the city because she slipped on some ice. The urge to go and shake her and shout "you live in michigan - it gets icy in the winter!" was overwhelming.

People will sue over anything it seems.

I had a friend who had jury duty in a very strange case. Apparently, there was a lesbian couple that wanted a kid, so they recruited a male friend (who apparently was gay as well) to use his sperm to impregnate one of the women. Well, I guess they went through lawyers and filled out paperwork saying that he was giving up custody, but then I guess after the baby was born he wanted custody and to be paid child support. When that didn't shake (due to the previous legal agreement) he tried to sue them for money for the use of his sperm...or something like that. This was quite a while back my friend was on the jury for this trial so I am probably forgetting some of the details. Anyways, it sure sounded interesting!

Jury duty would be interesting if it wasn't such a pain in the butt with work and compensation.

I tend to run either early in the morning or in the evening when it isn't so blazin' hot. If not my workplace has a gym in the basement and I'll just run on the dreadmill or eliptical for a while...it's not much better as it isn't terribly well ventilated but at least I'm out of the direct sun.

Then, we saw the house that I love, and which we will probably go for. It's in Filipinotown, and is a Craftsman home in the middle of being restored. It is absolutely gorgeous, with a new kitchen and bathroom, three beds, and a mature avocado tree. Downside is it won't be ready until August 1st, and we would need to let the owners continue necessary work in the backyard to make it liveable. But the price is right ($600 under budget) and we don't mind chilling in the Econo Lodge until then. Here's a link to the Craigslist listing: http://losangeles.cr.../738768102.html

I'm coming over and making my awesome guacamole then! What I wouldn't give to have my own avocado tree...

I really really hope that the bloat goes!! I mean I need to lose weight anyway but ballooning up like the michelin man is not my idea of a good look - after Tuesday it is diet time for us!! I have to get fit and lose weight but we gave ourselves until the end of Tuesday as Jeremy has Monday and Tuesday off - holiday time will be over and we need to be more sensible with what we eat... better make the most of it... hmmm - any ideas folks?!

I lost about 30 lbs (2 stone) earlier this year...damn it is tough but if both of you support each other it is much easier. In my case I joined Weight Watchers but different things work for different people.

If you want to eat better cooking at home is the best! Not only can you spend time together preparing the meal, but you can control what goes into the dish. I use low fat stuff whenever possible and turkey meat instead of red meat. We don't really deny ourselves anything...like we'll have a few chocolates or a couple cadbury's digestives after dinner...we just cut back in certain areas.

Like the kolache toss? :-p

My parents has their reception in an old ZCBJ hall. As for traditions, tell me more about them as my grandpa's parents came over from Bohemia...it seems that over time the old ways get lost.

Tabor Lodge 74, located near Dorchester in Saline County Nebraska was organized on October 8, 1899, with fourteen charter members. The Zapadni Cesko Bratrske Jednota (Z.C.B.J.) or Western Bohemian Fraternal Association was an outgrowth of the Czech Freethinking movement, which began in Bohemia (a province in the presentday Czech Republic) in the mid-nineteenth century. The Freethinkers broke away from organized religion and promoted liberalism and strong national and democratic views. As a fraternal organization, the Z.C.B.J. lodges provided security and ethnic solidarity for Czech immigrants in America. The Z.C.B.J. lodges have been primary conservators of Czech heritage. Tabor Hall was constructed in 1914, with a large dance pavilion added in 1934.

I'm not sure where it came from either. My mom gave me a tiny piece of cake and I fed it to Nicky with a bit of mess but not much. Well, then my mom gave Nicky a slab of cake (I blame my mom for instigating it lol) and he smashed it and rubbed it in. Well, that got me going so I wiped some cake off me and smashed it back on him.

Really I've never been to a wedding where it didn't happen. But then again my family and friends are fairly blue collar in many ways and drinking beer and smashing cake makes guests happy :-)

oh, SO exciting smile.gif

don't we all love our geeky men biggrin.gif wub.gif

London cabbies are the BEST, bar none... they spend a couple of years doing The Knowledge, which is a fair whack of the city that they have to learn by heart... you see them zipping about on mopeds, with the maps on a perspex folder at the front; they're pretty dedicated biggrin.gif

those in Sydney are pretty dodge though; I think anyone can be a cab driver if they want... I've given a few directions in my time wacko.gif

Same here...I give practically every cab driver in the city directions, even though both places I've lived is just off the main drag on the Northside. Maybe the London cabbies have just spoiled me for life blush.gif

The man hath arrived. No problems going through Dublin immigration, and the plane got in on time. Cab ride was a bit interesting as the cabby started going down the wrong street after I told him how to get to my house from the airport.

Is Chicago the only city where cabbies have no idea where anything is? I think I've read it is required in many cities that you have to know the geography of the city - like the location of every street.

But anything he is settling in...I guess he already has his keyboard out and is messing about on it lol.

Congrats on the weddings and reunions.

I got told off by the police today for jaywalking. Obviously, I am menace to society.

And I thought I was bad...I had a lady comment that I started the queue for the registers at CVS pharmacy "too far up." I told her I could start the queue any place I pleased since at the time I was the only person waiting for a register.

Oh yay, drink something cold to cool down biggrin.gif You don´t wanna see the food again tongue.gif When are you picking him up at the airport?

Just checked the flight tracker and he is currently over Newfoundland.

His flight gets in a little after 5, so I'll take the 4:25 train to O'Hare and by the time I get there he should be just getting out of baggage claims. We'll then take a cab home from there where I have a laid back dinner of cheese, wine and pate waiting.
