CanadaFellow Canadian VJers removing Conditions..

Weirdest (and happiest) day today - our 10 year green card arrived in the mail. The weird part is that we only sent in our ROC package in Nov and did our biometrics at the end of December. My hubby is active duty military and we included a copy of both is military ID and my DEERS card along with a letter from his command saying he's scheduled to be deployed in 2013. But we did not ask for an expedite and the command letter did not have a specific date on it.

Not complaining or anything, we are VERY happy but I feel like this is not real because I didn't expect to hear anything from USCIS until May (if then).

God has blessed us today. I am beyond grateful.

That's pretty damn impressive. Which office did you file at? I would not post this in the ROC forum though lol. your going to have alot of ppl upset at ya :P Espeically since the uscis themselves they they are only working on May applicants....and you applied in November...

Ashen, if you don't mind me asking, what did they RFE want you to send back? Just wondering what to expect when we get ours..lol.

Well its not just you Ashen, they are so behind that i think they are issuing RFE's to just about everyone. I mean I've seen some of the posts in the ROC forum, people who sent in tons of really good evidence are getting and RFE for stuff they already submitted. In fact its like they went RFE crazy. Something needs to be done but i have no idea what or how.
KimbearFemaleCanada2013-01-08 09:59:00
CanadaFellow Canadian VJers removing Conditions..

Past 7 months processing now... Getting pretty anxious and annoyed. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get an RFE, so I wish they'd just get on with it... :(
I have to move in 2 weeks also, and was really expecting to have this done by then, but now that's doubtful. I'm sure things will be lost in the mail.

lol Ashen, only you are as pessimistic and cynical as me when it comes to immigration :P Hopefully your green card will just mysteriously show up in the mail one of these days. But i hear ya..i barely sent enough evidence ( in my mind at least) as well i think le sigh. i only sent like 4 bank statements, and only the first page with each of our addresses listed..not the whole dang things. no affidavits, no pictures cuz we are lazy and never take any. no cards..cuz well no one sends anything to us or they forget to even put our names on em. since the day after i mailed it i'm sure i'm getting an RFE. oh well, worse case..we move back to Canada and rent this place out.

Hey everyone, just a quick question!
I'm finished and ready to send my documents. In early December we had ordered checks with our new address, but for some reason, there was a mistake in the printing, and as a result, I won't have our new checks until mid-January.
Can I pay using a check with our old address or will they see that as an issue? Our bank doesn't issue money order, would a cashier's check work?

My green card expires in mid-March, and I'm getting concerned about time. What do you think?

honestly, it costs alot to get new checks, i would just sent it in with the old address, i mean your sending in statements for that account with the right address too eh? i mean jeez..not many ppl even pay with checks anymore why waste money in my opinion.
KimbearFemaleCanada2012-12-29 17:48:00
CanadaFellow Canadian VJers removing Conditions..

I don't think they ever send AR-11 confirmations out. I did mine online, never received confirmation, and they sent the I-751 reminder to my old address. I just filled as normal with my new address, no issues. I never printed or sent confirmation. I'm pretty sure they are aware that their record keeping system sucks!

For the taxes, I just sent full returns, personally.

Congrats to Sdw and Spoom!

You can send the returns no problem as long as you submit the w2 with them usually. i had to request our irs transcripts twice. and the first time they screwed up somehow with davids name? right social wrong name..so dunno ####### was up with that lol. and ya i never ever got any confirmations for my ar 11, only the 865 that david sent got a confirmation.
KimbearFemaleCanada2012-12-05 09:59:00
CanadaFellow Canadian VJers removing Conditions..
As long as you have the confirmation page from doing the change of address online i would not worry about it. Since they had no record of ANY that i did, i sent copies of all the confirmations to prove that each time i moved i did indeed notify them, i also sent copies of the notice for Davids change of address as well, and also the proof of change of addy with usps. When i called to check on the addy change uscis said they could not do anything unless i had an active current case and told me to just send in my ROC and my address would be updated to match that. hey i figure sending those copies of notices in is proof we both changed our address and still live together at teh same address each move.

Oh, derp. I should have remembered that.

Oh well. Despite it being classified internally by USCIS as a "Form", you can't fill one out or file one with USCIS. So the general point stands. :)

Correct, just like an NOA is actually a form i-797, which is internal, the i-551 is also internal and used for their (uscis) forms..not the fill able kind used by us :)

!.Bank Statements
2. Credit cards in both names
3. Memberships
4. Tax returns
5. Personal mail in both names
6.Joint home ownership
7. Insurance and beneficiary info
8.Photo's

Plus all the required info and cheque

I was slow getting it out as my green card expires Dec.15th 2012 but its still within the time frame so let the waiting begin!

How long of a wait am I in for with the California office?Posted Image

It seems no matter which office you filed at its at least an 8 month wait atm. Last i knew they were working on March at CSC and vermont was a month or two slower :(

I'm reading that people are applying for naturalization and getting it before the green card! just wow. imo give them back the money from the ROC...yeah i know..not gonna happen. but dang...

At least i got my bio letter finally. although i'm worried..i read some poeple got RFE for only sending the first page of their joint bank accounts..which is what i did..although i sent a few all with diff address's on em. they are like 6 pages each which is long. i didn't wanna add more pages to the 99 i already sent! lol.

Hi lgg!

Congrats on the house and the new pupper!

Use the Hud. Its what the bank uses to make your mortgage statement anyway and its what gets sent in to the county for taxes etc. Everything is based on it.
I'd send the assessment and statement as well. But you know me, ever since the k1 i've gone overboard with info! lol.

Hello lovely Canucks!

Just popping by to say that we moved, we bought a house and of course, got an RFE regarding my removal of conditions. Not too surprising, really as they need to know that we're still living together/together. Just wondering, which part of our mortgage docs should I send? I was going to copy the big HUD part, it seems to say all we need to say. Plus I was going to send a copy of the new tax assessment for that property as well as a copy of the mortgage statement that we get each month.

What say you oh wise VJers?

Hope everyone is doing well and is happy and such. We also got a dog! Her name is Maddie and she's a mutt, half black lab and half black shepherd -- I love her.

Hi everyone...
:)

Canadiandggal I think we are both ok. David and I lived in 3 different addresses so i wanted to make sure they knew we were 100% living together as a happy married couple the whole time and make sure they didn't think we may have separated for any time. I guess having so many issues with my k1 then aos made me super paranoid. Every step of the way has been a struggle with problem after problem from an NOID to our lawyer screwing up to them losing our aos paperwork and not issuing a bio appointment that i guess, i just want to overdo it so they just ok it on the spot. but knowing my luck...something will screw up anyway :( gosh i just can't wait for this #### to be over. :(

CanadaFellow Canadian VJers removing Conditions..

Yep! Do that! I thought the two cards from All state *the ones you carry if something goes wrong on the road* would be enough..but no. I just got an RFE today...*VSC* and they didn't think that the insurance in just Tim's name was enough...among other things. Unfortunatly..there are some things missing from the beginning of our marriage...like bills in both names, credit cards, etc. because we just didn't get them changed right away. *sigh* We're going to have to get some friends to write statements. Thankfully..we go to church with a notary public!

Oh..my name isn't on the house..but we don't have mortgage/lease, because it's owned outright. I explained that in a letter. We didn't have life insurance; wills, loans etc either. Sheesh. It's almost like they expect you to go run out and do all that...

now you made me paranoid lol...oh the joys of immigration..i can't wait til its over.

extra stuff i have..not sure if i should send it as well:

copy of drivers licence showing same addy
copy of hubby's licence showing same addy
various walgreens prescriptions showing same addy
pay stubs showing same addy
Medical bills for bloodtests etc showing same address, and insurance provider.

plus:

CanadaFellow Canadian VJers removing Conditions..

Kimbear, I think you have a good idea. We moved once and I included evidence from both addresses. They want to see evidence that spans your entire marriage, so you definitely wouldn't want to limit yourself to the time in your house. So we had bank statements, CC statements, insurance info, etc. that started with one address in 2009 and ended in another in 2011.

They don't need any part of your Canadian passport. No need to send copies of your Bio page, visa, 1-94 or anything. All you need to send for ID is a copy of your GC (front and back). All you need your passport for now is international travel.

Our mortgage and deed is in my husbands name only. For ROC I sent a little letter explaining why (credit) and included a few supporting things, like our home inspection report in both names and our homeowners insurance in both names. It worked out fine. So I think sending in that authorization would be a good idea, can't hurt!

ohh thats a good idea about the home inspection report..the first page has a pic of the house addy and both our names! i almost forgot about that! :) I have the home insuance etc. but that is in my husbands name..hmm i'll talk to my allstate rep see if it can be put in both of ours.

CanadaFellow Canadian VJers removing Conditions..
Morning, :)

ROC is still 2 months away, but i like to prepare things ahead of time lol. So i have just a couple questions.

Got a question for anyone who has moved a few times since comming to the U.S. and is also doing ROC or has done it. I was thinking, that for each address we lived at (3 total) that i would give a few items with each addy on it. Ie; our first apartment in Des PLaines, a bank statement first page with that addy as well as CC statements etc with that addy for both of us, showing during that year we lived and recived mail finances etc along with utilities, then the same deal for out 2nd address at his parents, and then finally our house we bought. In efffect it would be like a mini package of evidence for each address we lived at. Would this be too much, or would it reinforce the fact that we did live together and comingled our assets life etc for each address? This is of course on top of the other evidence like car insurance policies, home insurance, life insurance, medical insurance which is all in both our names and shows me as a beneficiary, yadda yadda.

Also, my canadian passport is still in my maiden name, do i need to send a copy of our marriage certificate? since all my other ID, is in my married name? Do i have to copy every page in my passport? like the k1 visa, the i-94 any stamps etc or do they just want the bio page and the signature page?

We do not have the title to our house in both our names or the mortgage, not yet anyway. However, i have a copy of an autorization form my husband filled out saying that for the life of the mortgage loan, I am to be allowed to call and deal with it and access any info. Would this be a good item to add to the package?

I hadn't been back in several months - but I saw your note about hitting each other in the face for forgetting something in our packages. Made me laugh. Yeah, I get so focused on all the items I need to have in the package, I forget something, but the birthday was on the original AOS, not ROC. I remember your saga of immigration woes back two years ago. I hope you just get the RFE and can send in the copy of the green card without incident.

Friday, July 27th, I mailed off my DH's ROC to the CSC. Now to wait for them to cash the check and send us our NOA1. Seriously the wait for approval is ridiculous. As I look at the ROC forum for July, there are 20 people going through CSC and 19 people going through VSC. I can only imagine that in real life the numbers to both service centers are equal as well. Why the difference in wait times? I know it is a question that will never be answered, but I ask it anyway.

i'm envious of you lila :) your whole process took such little time. you entered the us 2 months after me and got your green card so fast. Stupid USCIS always making mistakes..le sigh. 2 more moths till i can do my ROC. Cannot wait until all this BS immigration stuff is overwith! lol :)

CanadaRed Flagged at Border, anyone else? What are my chances...

I have travelled to see my husband 7 times (twice since getting married) in the last 2 years without difficulty.  I have always carried proof of ties and had return flights booked.  I get nervous every single time and I haven?t been red flagged.

You made a mistake in trying to cross too soon after having spent our full Canadian allotment of 6 months in the US.  As Hypnos said, you must show that you are spending more time outside of the US than in it - so to the border guard it most likely looked that you were attempting to live in the US without any authority.  A lot of time will have passed before you fly.  You have your proof of ties.  You have a return flight.  You should be good to go without being given too hard of a time.

Please try to keep in mind that each situation may have it?s own subtle nuances to it.  People who tell you stories about trying to cross and have been refused may have overpacked (don?t show up at the airport for a ?2 week visit? with 5 gigantic suitcases - it looks suspicious), they may have incurred an actual ban which requires a waiver, they may be from a country that has a high instance of visa fraud and overstays so are looked at much harder than Canadians.

Good luck!

Strongly agree with the bolded part.  take necessities only. My mistake was too much stuff as well as my dogs and dog food etc etc.

KimbearFemaleCanada2013-05-06 10:10:00
CanadaRed Flagged at Border, anyone else? What are my chances...

Well, I'm getting mixed stories (privately and on this forum).  I wish there was an easy answer.  I'm so stressed out about this.

I was red flagged not once but twice back in Dec 08, on my birthday.  I had no proof of ties, like you i was 100% ignorant of the laws etc.  I was interrogated for 4 hours, photographed and fingerprinted, and treated like a criminal.  My then fiance was also questioned and we were both put into tears.  They even made me leave my dogs in the car and then had the nerve to give me ###### cuz they were in there so long!  I ended up getting a "refusal of admission paper" and told turn around and leave when it was all done.  I was given a list of "supporting docs" they would need to let me in.

So i went home, got a copy of my banks statement with how much funds i had to prove i could sustain myself while in the USA, brought proof of school, and when my classes resumed.  I had no job at the time and was staying currently visiting my sister in Montreal.  So she wrote me a quick room and board statement.

We tried again a week later, once i had all my proof.  Again i was denied, and went through the whole photo fingerprint ####### again.

Fast forward a couple of months, after we applied for the K1, got a lawyer etc.  I moved, got my own place with a real lease in Windsor, so  i could be within driving distance of my fiance.  Eventually i did try and cross again, i brought my lease, a copy of our k1 showing we were doing things the right way, I still had no job, was living off my savings from selling my house.

This time I WAS allowed in.  I clearly explained i was only there for a month, since my mother in law was makign the wedding dress, i explained i needed to get the measurements done, look for venues for the wedding and start planning, which would be easier in Chicago then in Canada.

IN Secondary, They looked through the K1 petition, stamped my passport, and said "make sure you go back to Canada like you promised" and let me in.

As you can see, it is doable, you can go back and visit.  whoever told you your not allowed is full of it.  The border guys said your allowed to visit while doing the petition, since they KNOW you need to as proof of the relationship for the visa in the first place!

I never once had my passport stamped either.  Now the only difference between me and you is that i was only there originally for 2 months not closer to 6 as you are.  IMO i would not rush it just yet.  wait a while. Plan everything, make sure you have as much proof as possible and definitely bring your ENTIRE K1 PACKET with you, including any notices they send you.

Also this will have no impact at all on whether you do get your fiance visa or not, just remember to mention on the forms etc when asked that YES you were refused and explain it was cuz of no proof of ties.

CanadaVaccination records - Carnet de Santé

Is it yellow? i have the same one just about.  it was good enough for my medical.  i just had to get two more shots other than what was in it.

So, I have this 'Carnet de Santé' that my mom got when I was a kid.

It's a little booklet that was given to new parents by the governement  in the 80's here in Quebec.

Inside you can write a bunch of stuff, it contains for example my statistics at birth, my growth charts and what not.

It also contains a list of all my vaccinations, dates, stamp from where it was given, and initials of the doctor or nurse who gave the shot.

Is that a good proof of my vaccinations, or should I get something more official?

Thanks biggrin.png

CanadaGetting Loans in the US with Canadian Credit

You can start by getting a US TD Bank Account from Canada: http://www.tdcanadat...vices/index.jsp

This is different than a TD CanadaTrust US dollar account. It’s a US based bank account. They pull your Canadian Credit when they start the account up. I haven’t looked at getting a credit card with them yet because I’m still up in Canada.

Amex also has a program to transfer you to a US Amex card if I’m not mistaken.

Good luck.

Where the hell was this when i moved here LOL. I had a td account and credit card etc. I had to close them since there was no way i could use them here with the extra fees. and they wouldn't let me pay my cc with my BofA account. to this day i'm still sending monthly snail mail checks to TD and its taking so long that half the time my payments were late :( I"m going to call them tomorrow and see if they can help me out with this now.

Thanks for posting this!

I wonder about what we would send in for evidence of domicile in the United States if we're living at a place that is owned by one of the petitioner's relatives upon arriving in the US? Would evidence include bills and things like that which are addressed to the petitioner?

Your a k1 you don't need to prove this.  your fiance already proved he is a us citizen when you filed the original i129f.  you can bring another photocopy of his passport / drivers licence etc if you want.

CanadaIs there any sort of equivalent to an RESP in the US?

Hey fellow Canucks,  with the impending birth of our daughter next month, i was thinking about how expensive school is here, especially in the Chicago area, and i was wondering if there is something similar to the RESP we had back in Canada?  If not, is there any decent type of college / educations savings plans out there? And where would i find info on them?  Any suggestions or experiences on what you have tried etc would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

CanadaInterview Waver

yes but the green cards will usually process 8-12 months .

getting a interview is the faster route

That used to be the case for sure with AOS, however its Not necessarily that way for the ROC stage.  I got my 10 year green card in June, and i was an October filer, there are a few people in that group who only JUST NOW got an interview letter.  It's a bit mind boggling if you ask me, especially since they have already applied for naturalization and have their bio appointments for it.  USCIS boggles the mind sometimes.

We just got a letter in the mail from the risk management dept of david's work about his life insurance policy.  they are TRIPLING rates..not increasing by a small amount but freaking tripling it for spouses and children.  his employee rate is going up too but its a very minor rate, like 3 cents..but mine is going up almost 4$ per 1k of coverage and our daughter who will be born is now going to be 2$ per 1k coverage.  I mean c'mon!! do they need to hike it that much? Hell the allstate plan i have is now cheaper than his work plan..WTFZ!

so I haven't talked to my mom or dad since probably January. I gave up calling them because they were always busy.. Well, yesterday was my Birthday and my mom called but I missed the call and she called again today but my phone was turned off. I called her back when I saw that she had called and we were having a nice conversation but after about 15 minutes or so she says she has to go and help my dad :S.. I was disappointed because there was more I wanted to talk to her about :(

AWWW Happy belated birthday Marilyn! I know how you feel. Hell the day I got my approval at teh consulate i went and saw my family. My sister understood i wasnt goign to be back for a long time, but my mother well, it was as if she didn't care or ddi'nt take it seriously. We saw her for 15 minsutes only cuz she had a hair appointment and wanted us to drive her around! we were like..you realize i;m leaving Canada eh? I wont be back prolly for a year or so? she just did not get it.

I gave them my phone number, email, addy facebook etc. She never called, never said congrats on the wedding no bday wishes no xmas card nothing. I was kind of disapointed as we always had a strained realtionship and she showed favoritism to my sister the first born. I havent talked to her in 2 years :(The last time i tried to call her she brushed me off after 10 minutes...it was the last time i tried to talk to her :(

KimBear,
Your injury does sound exactly like carpal tunnel syndrome, and all of the painting you have been doing is exacerbating it. It is basically caused by a lot of repetitive movement. One thing you can do to help is to go to the pharmacy and get a carpal tunnel brace. It will have flat metal panels on the palm and the back of the hand that will hold your hand in a certain position that will release the stress on the nerves involved. They are getting pinched which is causing the feelings of numbness and tingling and electric type shockiness. I get it as well and often wear the brace for several weeks until it resolves. You can wear it at night and I find it definitely stops that 'hand asleep' feeling that wakes you up in the middle of the night. You can expect to pay around $15 or more for it - make sure it is for carpel tunnel and try to get one that is specific for the hand involved (right or left) and is in the correct size. Having the correct fit is important.

Good luck.

So went to the doc's this am. Yep i have Carpal Tunnel. she had me do this test where you put your hands toghether wrist to wrist with fingers pointing down nad in a few seconds i had the numbness and tingling. I have that brace on you described. with 3 metal spoons in it. OMG how the heck do you do anything with this on? i can barely type..i can';t reach half my keys. lol. she also did a full checkup with blood tests as well since well..i';ve been here 2 years with out seeing a doctor yet. luckily i like this one and the office and people in it. AND she spcifically said hubby has to do the paintingt and help out..i'm not aloweed to do it any more. she also gave me some corticosteroid type pills to help. so we'll seee how this is in a week cuz just using a knife at denny's this am ( we had to fast for the tests) made my wrist spasm. :(

I keep telling him its just for THIS first month that stuff is tight. I have no idea how much our utility bills are going to cost and i just got nailed with a 185$ att bill. going from an apartment to a house is a big leap in montly costs. so i'm tryign to keep a reserve just in case. i want at least 50% of what the mortgage payment is to stay in the bank for emergencies. or unexpected expenses, like his best friends wedding in July etc. i never said he could not spend ANY money which is why i'm so perplexed. i just dont see the need for him to buy every pcs of pc equip gym equip etc NOW, rather than getting stuff bit by bit as we pay off the moving expenses. hes like the little kid in the store screaming i want i want and now now now. i mean seriously? lol. i have not even wanted to play on my pc or anything since we got the house. i'm outside alot with teh dogs, we moved right next to a forest preserve that i want us to start goign to for walks etc. i dont wanna be handcuffed inside all summer to a computer.

Kimbear, sorry to hear you're going through this. Hopefully, this is a transition period. I can completely relate. My husband acted very strange for awhile after we bought our house, but it has settled down. Still, I work at home (which has always been a dream of mine) so my husband thinks that because I'm home that I will take care of all the home stuff, before he gets home from work. Huh? I'm working. It's so annoying sometimes that I think I'll just have to rent an office somewhere so I can get it into his head that I'm working.

My hubby also has weird ideas about money. We were going to get a fence last year, which was going to cost around $5k. It didn't happen for various reasons. So now he wants to go on a vacation and I said, we don't really have the cash for the vacation he wants. He says, well, we didn't put up the fence last year so we have that $5k. Plus, we were going to go away for the weekend and we didn't do that so we have another $600. Really? I asked him if he moved the cash to another savings account or something, but no. We didn't spend it, so we have it. Really? Then, where is it? It's not in our bank account. It makes no sense to me at all, but he is adamant that we have that cash. I cannot convince him otherwise.

The bottom line is that it's scary when you've hooked your finances up to someone else's finances and then you find out they're not as responsible as you are. Your husband may or may not change. Instead of waiting for him to change, maybe you need to set up your finances in a way that protects you, rather than counting on him to change. Like maybe set up a household account, just for paying the mortgage and bills and the first thing he needs to do when he gets his paycheque is transfer an amount agreed upon into that account and then whatever he has left over, he can play with. Just my $0.02.

Hang in there. And don't paint if you're injured! Get better! Things can wait.

OMG that sounds exactly like David sometimes. I dont get how his brain works sometimes. He also believes 100% what shows up online is what he has available to spend and i keep telling him thats not the case. we have bills that get paid and dont show up as withdrawn for a few days, or checks that take a while to get cashed etc. and everytime i tell him this he has to say " but the online account" etc etc.

KimBear - Have you guys sat down with a budget and crunched all of the numbers together so he can see how much you really do need to afford a house? If there is room in the budget for video games and pc parts, then that's great, but didn't he realize getting a house would mean less spending money? Esp. on one income?

Sounds like he needs a bit of a reality check.

Also - did he say he would help with painting and getting the house all organized before you bought it? And is now not helping?

I guess I'm just confused as to why he is acting like all of this is a suprise? I mean you seem pretty level headed and sound like the type of person who would've discussed it in depth?

Sounds like you really need a really serious conversation about your financial future. Or maybe it's another one if you've had one already.

Did all that. i give him a tally every day and ask him for receipts since he doesn't bother to keep em and i have to ask what certain things are on the bank account so i can keep my register book balanced. He knew there were certain moving fees that we would have in addition to the mortgage, the uhaul rental, the hookup price for water garbage etc. prorated utility bills. i think half of what i told him went in one ear and out the other.

part of the reason he is like this i'm sure is cuz we were at his parents place for 9 months. and coudl not do anything, watch movies tv drink etc. we talked again last night and he admitted hes like a kid on a diet who is allowed in a candy store and is now pigging out. he said hed help out around the house he even picked out paint colours with me. he came home and said he was going to do his "chores". he tried to say it jokingly but i did not take it that way.
