CanadaObamacare Plans as a Conditional Permanent Resident

Ohh I didn't think of that option.  So, even if we have an employer insurance option, we can still use the exchange to get non subsidized healthcare?  I suppose there is a way to specify that when you search or something...

Yes you can.  We looked into that since hubby works for a company with a Grandfathered plan, meaning i get screwed out of alot of stuff especially with the pregnancy.  Unfortunately, his company offers more than the minimum, so it would not be worth it for us.  You can just go on the health site and put in info and do a search,  you don't need to tell them who you are or commit to anything.

You can still purchase insurance through the exchange even if your employer offers healthcare, but you won't qualify for a subsidy.  You may also want to check and see if your husband's plan offerings will change in 2014 to explore all your options.  Who knows, maybe next year they'll offer better quality plans?

Since all this technically kicks in January 1, i imagine most things will be sorted out by then and some places will adjust plans depending on demand etc.  At least its a start.

That should not have any impact the status of your green card since it is your  husband getting coverage for his family, and your soon to be born baby.  It would only affect you if you were applying alone as seen here in this link:

Is it possible there is still a backlog from the shutdown? I know they were not processing any of the card during that time.

Kimbear, are you sending in originals of anything? I really don't want to send in my son's original birth certificate, if it's going to take a year to process! I don't want to be without it for a whole year sad.png Would a good quality photocopy be acceptable do you think? Also, what are you going to do for your baby's photo? Obviously it won't meet the specific criteria that Canada has for photos, I hope they are more lenient for children?

Birth certificates for me in Chicago are pretty cheap, 15$ for the first one 4$ for every other one as long as they are ordered same time, so i got like 5 all at once.  I was just going to send off an original.  As for the pics, my friend who works at walgreens said they could do them but ill find out when i get that done.  First up is her US passport, and the post office here said they do the photos on site and can do them for babies.

Hey Jilla, i'm actually in the middle of doing that. Caihla was born October 25th, and i have had all the paperwork printed and filled out for the most part since September lol.  And ya the change to Nova Scotia is recent for the mailing.  I finally got her SSN# so now i can get her us passport and use that as an ID as well as copies of her Birth Certificates here.

CanadaWill Christmas Holidays Create Delays at Montreal?

well keep in mind the consulates close for both usa and canada holidays so its possible.  Also i'm not sure how busy loomis will be along with all the other delivery companies.  And there is the typical montreal weather especially in December can cause delays in and of itself.

Has anyone else noticed that "ranch" dressing tastes different in the states?  Its like ... sweeter?  Maybe its just me ...

EVerything seems sweeter in the U.S.  they add hfcs to every freaking item, bread is disgustingly sweet, i stopped buying it.  also salt..what is up with salt? and why oh WHY can i not find ANYTHING that is salt free? like my montreal steak spice, up north i can find salt free versions, here i'm lucky if i go to the spanish / polish isles and fine 25 % less salt versions...its really disheartening to see so much salt on everything as well.

ACTUALLY found Coffee Crisp and Aero bars (among other things) in the local grocery store in small town SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA.  Cleaned out said store of Coffee Crisp.  Yum!

if you have a world market in the area ( a few of them in Chicago) you can get Canadian stuff there too, 2$ a chocolate bar.

On the sauce tip, how about Diana Sauces? I went to their website and there is a question in the FAQ about coming to the USA and they are not. I'm sure I've seen it here though. Anyone else?

Also if you're looking for cheese curds, look no further than Wisconsin or Minnesota, get them at most any grocery store.

OMG  how oh how could i have forgotten about those!!! I loved Diana sauces..until you mentioned it i had completely forgotten about them!

2.54 a bar..OUCH lol.  worse than my coffee crisps...at 2$ each

Went to bed bath and beyond yesterday in Chicago to get some popover tins which were ridiculously hard to find, and saw they have a World Market there as well, and i found COFFEE CRISP!!! $2 a bar OUCH but OMG it was sooooo good. Hubby was happy as well. he used to eat dozens of them when he came to visit me up north :)

YES! They were in the cookie aisle, but kind of in a section where they had not so common items, on the lower shelf. They were beside the Breton crackers. Good Luck!

Jewel-osco carries all the dare cookies, lemon creme, maple, etc. here in chicago. almost 3 $ for a small box but oh soo good :)

So I have this thing for Skor chocolate bars. The US equivalent are called Heath and I can't stand them. I finally found a reliable source - Fred Meyer in the candy aisle. My guilty pleasure after grocery shopping trips. They were also at World Market but pricier and further away for me.

OMG me too!! hubby keeps getting me things like heath for skor, and caramello for mars, and i can't find caramilk anywhere either..i keep telling him these us version suck! lol.

So looking around I discovered that cane syrup is actually called light treacle and has British origins. Who knew?!?!  Apparently Amazon.com has some I could order in a tin.  Never had syrup in a tin before, but I think it's worth a shot!

Maple syrup from Quebec in a tin / can is all i will use. I hate that its in bottles here in the USA where the sun can get at it etc. :)

I think most dairy products cost a lot more on the east coast of Canada compared to the West!!

it depends.  i know when i lived in Quebec milk and cheese was ridiculous.  we used to drive to ontario and buy milk  since it was like 3$ cheaper for a bag.  same thing for Gas lol.

i always called it kraft dinner or KD.  haven't touched it since i moved here. it tastes bloody awful here :(  I miss the Canadian one.  its like kraft singles, those taste like ####### here as well.

EVERYTHING here has HFCS.  It's disgusting!  sad.png  Whenever I go back to Canada I get so excited about eating real tasting food...not sweetened versions!

For a while we were buying Aunt Millie's bread, but it looks like she sold out and now uses HFCS in her bread so we stopped buying those and now buy fresh bakery bread.  Currently i can only eat this healthy lifestyle stuff made with Splenda due to my Gestational Diabetes.  Once i'm able to eat normally again, i have no idea what i'm going to do.  Being off sugar for so long everything is going to taste disgustingly sweet again.ugh lol.

I've tried the Herr's ketchup chips and they're awful. I miss Old Dutch chips. I hardly buy chips anymore because I just don't like them here. Also, good coffee is hard to find. Someone mentioned kicking horse coffee...great stuff! The British Smarties and Cadbury bars still taste different than the Canadian ones. I miss Aeros and Coffee Crisp of course. They have a similar bubble type bar put out by Hershey but it's more solid chocolate than bubbles. I also miss Bicks pickles. The canned tuna here is way different too.

The only pickles we buy here are the ones found in the polish isle at the ethnic store.  nothing else works the others all has HFCS in them ..yuck

Soggy toast is disgusting.  I think Partner may be sideyeing me for being worried about margarine.  Ah well.  I'll find SOMETHING I can put on toast.

omg i agree..soggy toast...my hubby buys ICBN lite..and ya...course he also puts it with jam on his toast..to which i'm like eww... pb on toast..but you do NOT put extra icbn or marg on it.  nasty

for now i just use land of lakes butter.  its the only decent tasting one i can find.

and why is there only one style of hotdog bun?? LOL i miss the flat ones i used to butter and fry.

I haven't noticed a difference...however, it has been a while since I bought Miracle Whip (I've been buying Kraft Mayo with Olive Oil lately).  Now that I think about it though, every cheese sandwich I made did taste off, but I couldn't figure out if it was the bread or the cheese, because they both taste different here too.  I sure miss good extra old cheese!

extra old cheese or sharp cheese as its called here should be measured in YEARS not days or months..lol the cheese here sucks.  Unless you go up to wisconsin and get 10 year old aged cheese.  MMmm now that stuff is good but damn expensive its like 20$ for 4 oz.

the only grocery store brand i've found that was passible is from Cabot and its made in Vermont.  its dry and crumbly and tastes better than the everyday extra sharp stuff you get from craft etc.

I grew up eating Candian Miracle Whip. I don't like it here in the US at all.

I KNEW it was not just me.  the miracle whip here has a very odd taste..almost like a spice or something was put in it i find. Also the texture, it seems more greasy vinegary than yummy creamy.

I never thought to look at Amazon for that stuff.  the VH stuff i miss so bad especially the dry garlic spare rib sauce.  Luckily some of the little ethnic stores carry my 5 roses flour yay.  i was soo excited to see that cuz the flour here sucks lol.  they only use soft wheat whereas up north its all hard wheat = higher protein=more gluten = better fro baking vol au vonts etc. :)

There used to be a list on here, but from what many found out is that they are very expensive with horrific shipping fees.

So what type of "canadian" items are you looking for?  Remember, a lot of things people assume are Canadian are actually British and you can find them in the British section of specialty stores or even in some chains of grocery stores (World Market, Wegmans, etc).

For instance, Smarites are a British candy not Canadian so they are around quite a bit in British sections.  Ketchup chips on the other hand are Canadian and that you would have a more difficult time trying to find without either going to Canada or online for example...

Ketchup chips are not hard to find in Chicago anymore.  Herr's makes a Heinz Ketchup chip which you can get at Meijer or Walmart,  and Meijer even has a version of All Dressed thats not too bad. Unfortunately there are no Lay's Ketchup ones here though sad.png those are my fav.

The one food i want that i cannot get is Montreal Style Bagels.  Bagels absolutely suck down here.  St-Viateur in Montreal will ship them, but its damn expensive.

Canadanew passport requirements as of 10/2014

as read from here: http://www.cic.gc.ca.../2014-09-18.asp

New requirements for legal name changes

If you are applying for a new passport following a legal name change, you must first update your proof of Canadian citizenship (i.e. your birth certificate in Canada or your Canadian Citizenship Certificate) to reflect your new legal name.

What the hell am i suposed to do if i'm from Quebec? They dont allow you to change your maiden name to your married name and i haven't lived there in years, so there is no way for me to change my Birth Certificate.

They dont say whether this applies to married names or not...so, do i just ignore it?

CanadaGot Baby? Avez vous un bebe?

Caihla has been teething for a month now. and its driving us nuts.  one top tooth has come out, the other seems stuck up in her gums, you can see a corner of it but that's it..no movement.  so far all her teeth are crooked as well.

She has been mega crabby, and holy cow talk about temper tantrums..i complained to the pediatrician at 6 months about these .  Since then she has now given me a nose bleed, bruises, scratches, and bite marks.  I swear people are going to think my husband  beats me at this rate.  I have no idea what to do about it.  Shes a kung foo biting screaming yelling machine.  She even started throwing things.  I"m at a loss as to what to do.  yelling no at her doesn't work, telling her no ouchie, no hitting, no biting, don't hurt mommy, etc. nothing works.

i'm in tears every day cuz of it.  I feel like my daughter hates me. just trying to feed her is a trial in frustration.  I was abused as a child and seeing my child abuse me like this just makes me feel awful.  My husband doesn't understand why i'm so upset either :(

She also has stopped trying to talk or so it seems.  She used to say bah bah dada mama and like sounds and other baby talk works. Now..she doesn't even try, she just screams and yells and cries.  I'm worried about her development.  She wont wave, or point yet either. She doesn't understand anything i say to her like give mama the ball or anything yet. I keep trying to read to her, and play with her with colours and shapes etc, but all she wants to do with her toys is eat them.

I'm starting to feel like a failure as a mother.  She will be a year next Saturday.

Notary public at UPS etc onlly costs 1$ per signature per item. I haven't gotten around to doing it yet, Just psend 22k in bills got a 2nd mortgage to pay off the hospital bills and cc bills we racked up for baby stuff :(

waiting to hear how much David's school is going to cost and the electric panel replacement is before i apply for her citizenship and my naturalization as well.  25k loan apparently was NOT enough to pay off all the cc's etc le sigh. :(

So I'm looking at the instructions for gathering documents:

http://www.cic.gc.ca...C.asp#CIT0001E4

Where does it ask for an authorized person for the documents? NOWHERE THAT'S WHERE.

Oh wait...

CanadaGot Baby? Avez vous un bebe?

Caihla finally figured out how to crawl forward and not backwards now.  She is zooming around all over, and she stands up any chance she gets..then realizes she can't sit down or figure it out anyway and screams and cries for me to put her back down only to stand up again!  She stands up in the crib middle of the night crying, during the day in pack n play, or the play yard we got.  She hates being held hates sitting, and ONLY wants to be zooming around the house.

She is teething again! i cant say how much I HATE TEETHING!  Sleeping in the crib during this has gone out the window.  We fall asleep downstairs in the recliner and end up at 3 am in my bed with her snuggled between me and David.  I succumed to this cuz i was just so drained and tired of her crying and screaming.  :(  I dont want it to become a habit but we do get more sleep this way now.

I'm scared of her turning a year old.  I have no idea how to get her more on solids, i have a feeling she is going to lose weight once she's off mama's milk.  But with low supply and pumping its been a rough road.  I'm just glad i was able to give her this many months of breast milk, even if the last 2 were mixed with some formula at night cuz my boobs said "screw this #######" :(.

CanadaGot Baby? Avez vous un bebe?

Sorry VeeNDee, my pc broke or i would have replied sooner!

Not the right form..if you look further down you will see this:

Do not use this form to prove a child born outside Canada to a Canadian parent is a Canadian citizen. If your child was born outside Canada and is a Canadian citizen, apply for proof of citizenship (adults and minors).

Here is the right link for the application : http://www.cic.gc.ca...en/CIT0001E.pdf

Notice the name difference, it is CIT 0001E, the one you have is 3E.

Don't worry, they confused the hell out of me so bad i did the citizenship questionnaire for Caihla LOL.

So I went and printed out what I thought was the new citizenship form for applying for minors:

http://www.cic.gc.ca...en/CIT0003E.pdf

It is asking me some weird questions.  Such as: "When did the child become a permanent resident of Canada?"

Ummmmmmmmm she hasn't?

The attached instructions for accompanying documents require the same things as before except now they want: "Photocopy of your child's permanent residence card" - Ummmm she doesn't have one?!?!?

Is this the right form? And if not, where on earth am I supposed to find it?

I hate paperwork.  I suppose it doesn't matter what government it is, they will all make it overly complicated.

Help?

Good Grief! My kid is almost 11 months and she only weights 16lbs!!! lol, however she is like 28 inches long now.

That is one healthy big baby. :)

went for our 2mos check up... little guy is 16lbs and 25.5`inches long!
