That is great news for you.
Congratulations, at least you have some time to prepare yourself.

I know when I came thru JFK it was a pain the ###! I had to collect my bags and recheck.
I already told my husband I want him to connect in Paris, that way he doesnt have the hassle of getting his bags in JFK and re checking them in, which could just lead to more confusion.

Good luck good.gif

If you mean Paris, France then he will still go through that because Paris is still outside the United States. He would still have to go through customs and immigration same as anyone else when entering the United States.

JFK was always a connector for me and I wasn't going through "immigration" so I'm not sure if you get bags then do immigration or if you do immigration and then get bags.. Every air port is different.. But I know Philly you do immigration and then get backs... I hope to get a call back ASAP!

I have flown through JFK a couple times and I could have sworn I had to get my bags first and then go through immigration. Maybe my memory is bad though.

I remember getting my bags first and then there was customs and immigration. This way if they want to check your bags or whatever, then you will have them with you. I just remember my bags being the first thing I did, but it has been nearly a year since I last flew through JFK.

Middle East and North AfricaFrustrating Mena Men
Well, you could be like my father and how he tought me. My father decided on night at 2am when he was particularly drunk that it was time to teach me how to drive. I was 12 years old, lol. So he (yes while he was drunk) drove me out to the country well outside of the city. Because it was the middle of the night there was almost no traffic. Then he just had me keep making various turns and let me get the feel of the car and driving. After about an hour he pointed me in the direction of the city and eventually I ended up on a highway. I was so scared to be driving on the highway as it was the first time ever for me to drive and it was very illegal at my age, lol. Then it started raining and I am fumbling around for the windshield wiper controls and the defroster. At one point I couldn't hardly see a thing and started to freak. My father, being totally drunk, didn't get upset at all and just helped me locate everything. At the time we lived in apartments with a very crowded parking lot. I was worried about parking so I chose to take us to a empty parking lot (must have been 4am by this point) and I practiced parking for 30 minutes. After that I was confident to take the car back and park it at the apartments. It was definitely and interesting experience. He took me out and later my younger brother this way a couple times. Eventually I became the designated driver, lol. I don't know how many times I drove my dad and his friends home because they were too drunk. Because it could cause me to lose my chance at a license until age 18 I was always very careful and thank God never got caught. I probably even saved lives considering how my father would drive when he drank. We figured if I ever was caught the police would prefer me over my father in driving. Needless to say, later at age 15 and soon to turn 16 my grandfather offered to take me out driving. He had no idea my father had been teaching me so it was a huge suprise to him that he couldn't find any fault in my driving and that I wasn't scared at all, lol. I didn't tell him that I had experience.

Anyway, I don't really recommend that method, but I thought I would share it if for no other reason then a laugh.

Middle East and North AfricaRamadan Traditions
I like to use buttermilk when I make chicken fried steak. Whatever is leftover I use in my mashed potatoes too. I couldn't drink it by itself though.

As for milk and dates during Ramadan, I don't like the taste of milk and I'm lactose intolerant anyway. I tried soy milk, but it tastes bad too and still makes me feel upset to my stomach because of that. Sometimes I brave a very small glass of milk if it is going with fresh baked cookies, but that is worth a tummy ache and the cookies cover the taste of the milk.

Middle East and North AfricaIs it just the distance, or is it something more...
My situation is a little different, but there are some similarities. My husband is extremely possessive and jealous. This drove me crazy at first. He had so many rules and constantly asked me about where I've been and what I've been doing and with who. Me being the strong person I am didn't tolerate it. We had times where we didn't talk at all for a couple days. Slowly, over many months we worked out compromises and calmed things down. I always send him a message or call him if I plan on doing a shopping trip or going out with friends. He knows who I am with and about how long I will be gone and where I will go. This would not be uncommon even in a marriage here with two Americans. He has learned to not be harsh in his behavior and over time he feels secure and trusts me a lot more. I think my big mistake in the beginning was not wanting to be held accountable to anyone. Over time I realized that was how I destroyed my last marriage. The guy I was married to first was wholly American and not possessive at all or even jealous. Yet my first husband often claimed that it was like we were two people living in the same house. He told me I didn't need him. So this time I took what my current husband said and really thought about my behavior. I got over my super independence that made me feel I shouldn't answer to anyone. Now my husband feels secure in knowing what is going on with his wife and I feel better because I am not being hounded to death. The key for us was communication. After we figured out the best way to do it, things got a lot better and I thank God for that. As an estimation, I would say it took almost a year from the time we met each other until we worked it all out.

Not saying this fits anyone else's problems or situations, but I wanted to put it out there in case anyone thinks they may have a similar situation. In my case, my husband just wanted to feel secure since he couldn't be near me. Once I learned to do that, everything else fell in place and we are much happier. I am not totally restricted. I go out with friends or even an occassional gathering. My husband knows about it and I just always ask him first and discuss it with him before I commit to anything. He just likes that he is a part of the decision. He almost never tells me I can't do something so long as I discuss it and it is not something bad (like going to the club or a place with lots of drinking or bad people).

I went to the MENA store and bought some good Iraqi made bread, I haven't had it in so long so I was excited. I also picked up some baklava, Maamoul cookies and cheese. I had picked up a lot of dates too, but they forgot to put them in my bags and I didn't realize until I got home. The store is over an hour away so I can't just go back sad.gif Now I will have to start Ramadan without dates, but inshallah I will get some next weekend.

I am about an hour away from New Orleans where they are evacuating. We are not evacuating but making major preparations for buckling down. My dad has boarded up the windows on the east side of their house (they have huge glass panes there). We've taken down all things that could fly away (and into a window blink.gif ) and secured the iron picnic table and chairs.
I've just returned from the store getting ice, tape for the windows, batteries for a radio, and lighters for the candles. We have food, water, and flashlights. Dogs & Cat are as prepared for as we can be. George is *not* liking being an inside cat - at all no0pb.gif . I'll probably cook up some things tonight and tomorrow in case we lose power (which is pretty imminent) and fill the bathtub tonight for water to flush the toilets. We'll be fasting anyways, but it would be nice to have something decent to eat for the first Iftar!
Ugghhhh... I think that's it. Just trying to stay off the roads and out of the stores as much as possible. Oh yea, topped off the gas tank too - just in case good.gif . I think we're as ready as we can be at this point. It looks like it's really gonna be a doozy.

School just started last week and we had Monday off. So far I have three broadcast classes and two media/history related classes.

I looked at the Arabic Rosetta Stone today and balked at the price. They want above $500 for the complete set.

You know, I found the Rosetta Stone box. It has everything but the CD. I remember I took it out to use it, but that was in 2004 and I moved twice since then. I will continue to keep a look out for it. I've gone through the books I have too, but most are advance books though I found one so far I know you could use. I'll keep looking around.

What time is Maghrib for you Rahma? It seems like you are really early where you are at.

I'm here in the central time zone and I still have to wait about 40 more minutes before I can break my fast. I spent the first part of my day resting and the second half of my day cleaning my home. The cleaning helped me to keep my mind off things and this way I wasn't cheating by sleeping the day away, lol. Tommorow I have to go back to work so then the real fun will begin as I will be surrounded by non-muslims who already warned me they will purposely eat and drink in front of me just to annoy me, lol.

The first few days are always tricky for me because I have to constantly remind myself not to do the things I normally would. Also, it is a lot harder to concentrate on Dhuhur and Asr prayers for me. My head hurts so bad right now that I had to start Dhuhur prayer all over again because I kept getting lost as to where I was in the prayer. I think the second day is harder than the first and curious to see how fasting at work will be like tomorrow. I told my employees NO Teryaki for the whole month i am there. We'll see if they follow directions

How is everyone else....??? ARe you on the second section of the Qu'ran?

My second day was actually easier than my first. I drank lots of water last night so all through the day I still had saliva. It didn't take away my desire for some soda like everyone else was drinking, but I thank God for easing my fasting. Really, the hardest part was when I got home and still had two hours to go. I was trying to keep myself busy to make the time pass quicker.

I will be reading the second section of the Quran though I already read a few verses extra so that I can be ahead when aunt flow comes and I can't read the Quran. It lasts 6 days for me so that would be a lot to make up for later and I figure it is better to get ahead.

I will not be able to eat all this, but I will have it for later and I can always eat some more tommorow night, lol.

My husband called me today. It makes no sense that they left my husband out sad.gif This made me call my congresswoman's office to see if she ever got through to DOS. Of course, I'm driving to the airport at the exact time that maghrib comes which is making me in a bad mood. Who schedules a flight without asking the person picking them up if that time is okay? I will miss the maghrib prayer and it will be 45 minutes after Isha before I get home, at least. Oh well, what can I do? I'll just make the prayers up when I get home.
