I always fly RJ so I don't know what Delta does for that flight. RJ is great as I once had a bag that was 62 pounds and they didn't say anything about it, lol. I hope Delta serves decent meals. They certainly don't inside the US.

I know that's what I was thinking, Oh no what kind of ####### food will they be serving. My baby is going to be starving by time he gets to NY. sad.gif

I told my husband to make sure he ate in New York as he wouldn't be getting much of anything on the next flight. They have plenty of time to eat.

I know the IOM had reps at the airport to make sure everyone got on the plane okay. My husband had to hang up the phone when they called his name. He called me back later saying his bags were a couple pounds overweight and Delta airlines wanted to charge him $150. Luckily he still had room in his carry on so he could move some things and lighten the checked bags. Now he is complaining his carry on is too heavy, lol. I think they should be fine.

Thanks Jackie. Inshallah soon it will be your husband coming smile.gif

I am growing more excited each day as it grows closer. In the beginning I was afraid to believe he was really coming. You know the longer you wait the more you worry if that day will ever come. Now, I can barely sleep and all I do is think of him coming and how to make him happy and comfortable though he tells me not to worry and he'll love me as I am and not to do so much, lol.

He will be coming through JFK (New York). He has a six hour layover so that should be plenty of time. I can't believe he is getting on that plane in less than 24 hours!

Tommorow night is the last night to talk to my hubby on the internet before he leaves. Their flight actually takes off at 4pm on Tuesday (our time) can you believe that? I am so excited and running around trying to get things done and be ready!!!

I know what you mean but I've decided if the house isn't as I want it oh well he'll survive. As long as I'm there to meet the plane he shouldn't have any complaints.

I know he already went to the hospital to take his last medical test this morning. My hubby has been very very busy getting ready himself so we've only talked a little since he got his date.

My husband went to do his medical at the hospital this morning too, lol. They probably keep running into each other. We haven't been able to talk as much since he has been getting ready, spending time with family and friends and all the appointments. I can't believe it is getting so close!

I'm so picky about my house if anyone is coming to see it for the first time or just guests so of course I want it perfect for him. Not sure if I'll get everything done, but I'll certainly lose sleep trying, lol. I know your not sleeping either. Not much longer to wait though.

That is wonderful! I would just give you one bit of advice, take everything that you can for aid like the food stamps and maybe even the Medicare...use the money that you would have to pay for his coverage and pay that towards the ticket. Also, the food stamps just help with some extra money for groceries. Take it as a gift. This will also be good for your taxes, as you can file as married with his social security #. I just give these few tips because even if you have a good salary, it can be a financial strain in the beginning as you rework everything and he doesn't have any income.

I wish you all the best! kicking.gif

I appreciate the advice. You are probably right that it is better to use what benifits he gets to save money. Its also nice that I can claim him for taxes as that should bring back a bigger return. Thanks for your help!

Middle East and North AfricaMy husband is coming!!!
Thanks everyone for all the congratulations. I can't tell you how shocked I was and happy. My husband still can't believe it either after all this time. You reach a point where you wonder if its ever going to happen. When he told me the date they are flying him it was even more amazing. Just over two weeks is all I have to wait which seems so unbelievable to me. My husband called at 2am so needless to say I didn't get any more sleep, but my happiness kept me going through work thank God!

As for the for the questions about refugee, there are some I still have to learn but I'll share what I have been told by the local office in my home area that called me months ago to confirm my husband would move to my home location. The plane ticket my husband is flying on is at a discounted rate which is on a loan basis. Meaning they have a special fare deal so it is less than what you would normally pay and it is taken care of by the United States as an interest free loan. My husband will have 18 months to pay it back. They will also pay all his overstay fines since his visa to Jordan expired in March and the fines are $2 a day until he leaves. Doesn't sound like much until you add it up, lol. My husband will not have to pay that back as the United Nations takes care of that. When my husband arrives here he will be given some spending money. I'm not sure of the amount though it should be under $1000 but over $300 if that helps, lol. They would normally set up a home for the refugee to live in once they arrive but of course in his case he has a home so they will sign the money they have alloted for his first months rent to me. I can then spend it in whatever way I see fit. My husband could initially qualify for medicare and foodstamps, but I have medical insurance he will be convered under and don't really need food stamps though if they give them I suppose they can be used if we wanted. He will also get a sponsor who can drive him around to appointments, help him get his SSN card and further medical check ups he may require. He will go through further orientations to America classes and resume writing classes as well. He can speak english fine, but otherwise they would pay for him to get classes. They also help with him getting a first job. He will not really qualify for some things as time goes on due to my income whereas other refugees would continue to get them. For instance most refugees don't have family to live with so the US can cover rent and living expenses for up to 8 months for Iraqis. Most other refugees only get 4 to 6 months aid.

He will not get a green card initially but will have work authorization right away. After one year he can apply for adjustment of status to get the 10 year green card. For refugees they don't have to pay the fees to adjust status and of course his marriage will not be scrutinized like it is with the CR1.

Okay, thats the basics of what I know and can always give updates as I learn anything else. At least this way if any of you know anyone in a similar situation then maybe you can help them with this info. Thanks to all of you again for the well wishes. It really means a lot to me.

My husband just got the call from the IOM (International Organization of Migration) saying he was approved for refugee and will be flying to the United States on the 10th of December. I can't believe it. I went through so much trouble getting the expedite and then in the same 24 hours he gets the refugee visa. He is going tommorow to take his passport and start the final outprocessing for refugee. I began to wonder if this day would ever come. Thank God is all I have to say!

Middle East and North AfricaMENA 2008 Spouse Reunion
This is the fifth day since my husband arrived here. So far things have gone really well. We have gone shopping together for things like food and clothes and next is gifts for my family when we visit them for Christmas. We also bought a tree we plan to put up tommorow smile.gif Yes, we are muslim but my father lives with me and he isn't muslim plus it is just fun to do. So far my husband gets along with my father great and my cat which suprised me though he wants me to give her a bath even though she really is clean. I told him he is more than welcome to try that himself, lol.

I'm not sure how it will work out for my husband getting a job. He is supposed to be able to work but he didn't get the employment authorization in New York. For some reason JFK didn't except the I-94 for any of the 70 refugees who came. The refugee agency here is supposed to be working this out so we should find out more this week. He will be going to apply for his ssn card on Thursday so that is one step forward. Refugees are allowed to rely on public assistance so I doubt they will want my husband to not be able to work so hopefully that will help his case. He doesn't even have a stamp in his passport or any proof of a visa. The whole thing makes no sense. He isn't supposed to use his passport for anything, but JFK did scan it so they could let them all in without the I-94.

Anyway, he is looking forward to being able to work and find a job so hopefully he isn't held up long in paperwork. I am so thankful for having him here and we are still hugging each other all the time as we still can't believe we are finally together and the waiting is over. It still seems unbelievable to me after waiting and worrying so long. Finally he is safe and I don't have to worry about him being sent back to Iraq. I can't describe the relief that gives me or how much it has reduced my stress. I'm off work for two more weeks which also makes things nice smile.gif

S and SFemaleIraq2008-12-18 14:56:00
Middle East and North AfricaWhich process is the quickest
Since your husband is from Iraq, you will have more options if you get married. There is another woman on here who filed for K1 last year for her Iraqi fiance and they are still waiting under security checks though his visa was approved. The K1 is a gamble but long security checks are pretty much guaranteed for any Iraqi male. I filed the CR1 and K3 (K3 never went through because I-130 was approved so fast) since I was married. If your married then your I-130 is automatically expedited through USCIS because he is a relative of a US citizen and from a war zone (I've seen Iraqi I-130s approved in two to three weeks). If you do a fiance visa (I-129F) then you don't get the expedite option so you could wait months for the approval (usually 3 to 6 months though it could take longer). Another thing is that once an Iraqi I-130 is approved then you will get a letter from the department of state saying he is eligible for resettlement to the US under the refugee program. Turns out the background checks are much faster for refugee than spouse visa and that is how my husband and another girl's husband got here quicker. He also has more benefits as a refugee and you will not need to do an affidavit of support for him coming as a refugee. I know that can be a problem for some people to meet income requirements to support their fiance/spouse.

If you have any more questions please let me know smile.gif

Hi S & S - good to see you!!!! Good morning MENA - wishing everyone a great day! NY has a perfect winter weather today - sunny, breezy and over the freezing point. I will try to get out from bed soon and maybe even venture out for a sec since my cold has been keeping me grounded for the last few days.

P.S.
S & S - I can't believe that your hubby has been here already 23 days - time is flying. Hope you are both enjoying the new "togetherness". How is he liking US so far?

Have a great Caturday everyone!!!
D.

Thanks for asking. Things are going really well. I can be a moody person, but he is really great handling it. He met all my family during the holidays and he really enjoyed it. We found out that he didn't qualify for all his refugee benifits because of my income, but we are working on getting him a decent job so he isn't just sitting around. He got his SSN card on Monday so I got him enrolled in a nurse's assistant class starting Monday which will be great. He is actually a medical school graduate, but the tests for becoming a doctor are very expensive and difficult. We both want him to spend a lot of time studying before those tests. I think taking a lower hospital job will give him some experience with how the US healthcare system works and help to encourage him for taking the more difficult medical licensing tests. The Nurse's assistant class will also teach some basics he will need to know about hospital work and once he has work as a nurse's aid for awhile it will give him a good reference when he starts applying for residency programs. This is my thoughts on the best course to take anyway. There are a lot of job openings for Nurse's aid everywhere so at least it is pretty much a guaranteed job. The course to get the license takes between 3 to 12 weeks depending on how often you go a week. He will go all day, four days a week so he can finish in about 3 weeks. After this he can take the state license test and start working smile.gif

My husband's family was approved for refugee to Australia. He was on the paperwork to go there as well and gave it up to be with me. They will be leaving soon, but we hope that after a year he can apply for the refugee travel document and be able to go see them. They want us to move to Australia with them, lol, but for now we are staying here so I can go back to school and get my degree.

Some of the advice given here about what to expect when your spouse comes has been great and prepared me a lot though I don't think you can ever be fully prepared. No matter how many times you think you can handle a thousand questions a day, you will still have your moments where it drives you crazy. Sometimes I don't have the answer and my husband doesn't understand why I don't know, but thank God things are getting better as he gets used to things. He loves checking the mail and getting the newspaper. These were luxuries he never had before of having it all delivered to the house. Saves me the trip to the mailbox so I don't mind, lol. He has become great friends with my cat though he keeps discussing wanting to give her a bath even though she is very clean. I told him if he wants that then he must do it himself because I'm having no part of putting a cat in water, lol. My reaction to the idea has kept him from trying so far, lol. Food has been easy on my husband. He will try just about anything. Only thing he doesn't like is Dr Pepper and Mountain Dew. He prefers to stick with Pepsi and Coke, but thats okay with me as it means I don't have to share my Dr Pepper whistling.gif

I am so thankful to have him here and we hug all the time just knowing what we went through to get him here. I hope others still waiting are reunited with their SOs soon.

Middle East and North AfricaIsraeli Action Against Gaza Will Make Matters Worse
Interesting article. Thanks for sharing. I think it makes some valid points. I hate to see these groups get more support as they fight Israel. It makes Hamas and Hesbollah stronger. There are other ways to deal with them and constantly bombing civilian targets (though they may have militants in them) isn't the answer.

Middle East and North AfricaApproved! I130 NOA2 in 101 days...
Congratulations!!!

Maybe his situation helped with Gaza. I know the Iraqi petitions were approved in about 2 to 3 weeks at Vermont though I got stuck when I sent my husband's I-130 in because USCIS got backlogged so I had to wait 4 months just to get the NOA1. Then the NOA2 came three weeks later.

Hopefully the rest of your journey will be smooth and easy.

Rajaa, I have been away so much I didn't know for sure what day your hubby was coming. I am so happy to see it is only 8 days!!! That is so wonderful and I can imagine how nervous you are and excited. Try not to stress too much. All the waiting is really worth it once he arrives. I still thank God every day when I look at my husband and see he is here. Life isn't perfect, but it is definitely better than what I thought it would be. There is the occassional disagreement yet we manage to work it out and the vast majority of the time we spend so happy together. Inshallah you will be so happy too!

I have a question for the women who have had children before. According to my calculations I am 11 days late for Aunt flow. I took a pregnancy test two days ago but it was negative. Is it normal that it might not show pregnant for awhile? The most I have ever been late is 12 days and I am almost to that point now. Any advice would be great, thanks.

Had four kids star_smile.gif you had a major change in your life so give it a few more days unless you're noticing you're really tired or other tell tale signs.

I am very nervous and excited and feel like i have no time to be ready lol.... not like i didn't know this day was coming but. Gotta get a punch list out and get to work on it. I will only have one day off prior to his arrival and even the day after he is here have to attend a mandatory meeting (I think he'll sleep the entire day anyway) I plan to have food in a crock pot, lap top ready and calling card for him as well as his new cell phone so I think he'll be able to stay busy until I am home then I am not leaving his side for almost 2 weeks insha'allah.

S and S I was thinking about you so much lately I am very happy for you. I am so nervous lol

Thanks for the advice. So far there are no other signs except some tenderness in my chest. It is really early to tell but I get chronic migraines and take heavy medication for them. I've been afraid to take the medicine because it is not to be taken during pregnancy for any reason due to high risks. This means whenever I get a migraine I am forced to ride it out for anywhere from 12 hours to 36 hours until it passes. Not easy when I must still go to work. My nuerologist told me that most migraine sufferers stop getting the migraines after they are about 3 months pregnant so it isn't an issue for very long. The migraines generally don't return until the pregnancy is over. For now though, I just hate to risk taking the medicine in case I am.
