LOL! Olivia! He hasn't given anyone a present yet. he said out of the triad of us at work doing our weight loss thing (both my friends) whoever won at the end of 2 months got a prize from him. He knows i love presents and he KNOWS I am going to die of jealousy so he knew this would make me do what he was hoping, which is drop a bunch of weight so I can ge the present which he will nOT describe to me other than saying I get the same thing as they do (so it's not what you put a spoiler over).

I want a present!! I don't care if it's a rock. I just want it.

I have a proportional leg and torso length, people jsut complain that I am short-- which is opdd because everyone sees me as shorter than I am-- everyone. I'm 5'4" but people remember me and insist I am 5' tall-- which would make me shorter than my own mother whom i tower over. I think it's beacuse of my small frame.

Could also be because I wear flats and people think I am wearing heels. I get that a lot.

I'm not a big fan of heals. If I wear them, they aren't very high. Thats weird they think you are shorter than you are.

I'm not tall, 5"5, but I just walk really fast. Part of it is I have what is called a short waist. My torso is shorter than most women, but my legs are longer because of it. I can often walk faster than most men. It drives anyone crazy that walks with me anywhere, lol. I'm always being told to slow down. Once I got an injury in my knee and I still walked faster (while limping) than everyone.

Yes shin splints are the big suck. My friend who has been a physical therapist for 30 years showed me how to condition my shins for them in preperation but says maybe I just need to lose some weight first before trying this running program again.

Yeah, the more muscle you build up in your legs, the less problems you will have with shin splints. I found fast walking or slow running causes me the most problems with shin splints. Every person is different on that though.

Problem is for me, I tend to walk really fast naturally, lol.

Oh, you are bad tonight Olivia! lol

Also, be careful of shin splints. Most of the time they will heal on their own, but some cases become really bad and can really do damage.

The questions definitely never end. I am glad my father lives with us so I don't get all of them. My husband also used his CNA classes to ask his teacher and fellow students many questions which saved me some. After two months some of the questions have eased up but some things have not. Still got to work on my husband using the microwave on his own though he is using it if I tell him the times to put in. I really can't blame him, the microwave can be a lot of guess work in knowing the times and takes practice. I still don't always guess the times right on some things.

WOW S and S!!!

PROPS TO YOUR HUBBY! good.gif

So I got my son (who turns 16 tomorrow) and my husband both ready to get the permit.
One is studying the other one is procrastinating...can you guess who?? whistling.gif

We have had the manual sitting here for 2 months now.
Hubby hasnt even picked it up.....He speaks and understands excellent English, though I am not sure what is his delay but I know he definitely wants to get his permit.

MENA Buddies....have a good day
Had a blah weekend and quite frankly I am ready to rip someone's head off at any given moment mad.gif

I couldn't hardly get my husband to study the manual at first either. It wasn't until he finished this CNA program that he finally buckled down. I think having those classes kept him busy but after he had to go back to sitting at home he got bored. Plus he realized how difficult it was for me to get him to those classes with my work schedule and once he has a job I may not always be able to drive him to and from. That motivated him and I was so proud when he finished reading the book in a week and took the practice exams online. The actual test had 30 questions and he only missed 3 which is better than what I did when I took it years ago, lol. He was so happy to finally get his state ID and now he can legally drive with me in the car though he is still nervous about the traffic here.

Hope your husband gets on top of things and starts studying. I know how hard it can be to get them motivated!

Good morning MENA! This weekend went by way too fast sad.gif I got the coffee if anyone needs it.

My hubby went Friday to take his driver's test. He passed the knowledge exam but they have no appointments available until March for the driving. For now he has his permit which gives him time to practice driving here so that is good. We are trying to find a cheap car for him as well because my work schedule doesn't make it easy to take him to any job he may find. Hopefully we will get it all worked out.

Good morning everyone. Coffee is a must this morning. We were out trying to find a decent used car yesterday. I already have car payments with my current car that will take a little less than two years to pay off so I don't want any other payments. This means paying cash which we set aside $2000. Finding a decent car for my husband at that price is not easy but we are doing a lot of shopping around. We found one car we liked and negotiated the price but I have to wait until this morning to see if they will take my offer.

Anyway, have a great day everyone.

I've been using turbo tax too. After the first time I used it, I felt silly for paying others so much. Those accountants are basically staring at the same screen answering the same questions but turbo tax is way cheaper.

GG - I have been looking at your siggy for a while now and I just don't get it. What does that mean "they put the sites on top for a reason"? Is it cause his pants are gonna fall down? What's a "site"? Is that another name for gun? Seriously I have spent time thinking about this whilst sitting on my back porch the past few days.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that as well - things that makes you go hmmmmmmm

I think it's supposed to be "sights" not sites. Like a gun sight. Something to do with making fun of people who don't hold their guns the right way so that they look cool.

I think ur right but I, as well, have spent time pondering this.

The sights on the gun are what is used to aim the gun. When you shoot, you should be looking through those "sights" to aim at your target. The way that guy is holding the gun would make no sense if he wants to shoot accurately. The sites must be on the top of the gun because that would be the easiest way for the eyes to focus through them.

Hope that helps smile.gif

Good morning everyone. I hope you all have a great day. As for me, after work we are going to do some more car shopping. This would be so much easier if my work schedule didn't conflict with the best time to look at cars. He managed to get one of my favorite Authors, Jean Sasson who writes biographies about middle eastern women's lives, to autograph a copy of one of her books I hadn't bought yet. Not only that but she also sent an extra book I hadn't read that she also autographed. She also sent book marks, an autographed picture of herself, a nice cardand other little odds and ends. To top it off, my husband got her to call me tonight at 8pm to wish me a Happy Valentines day. I can't believe he got a New York Times best selling author to call me on Valentines day. She was so amazing and sweet. How she had time for that, I will never know. Anyway, because her books are great and she was so wonderful for doing all that, you guys should check out her books if you haven't already. She is the author that wrote a princess trilogy about a Saudi woman's life. She has wrote other books as well, but that is her most famous one.

Happy Valentines day everyone. Hubby and I will go out later for dinner and a movie. I got him some cologne, a card and chocolate. I feel bad he can't get me anything without me being with him as he doesn't have his full driver's license yet, just the permit. I told him it will be better next year and not to worry. He hasn't been here that long.

Also, I took my cat to the vet yesterday and got her vaccines. Now she is sick with a fever and didn't move all night. I felt so bad for her so I called the vet and they said to bring her in. Her temperature was 104 (cats normal temp is 101). So anyway we got her a benedryl shot, penicillin shot, a shot for any pain and they gave her some fluids. Poor thing is sleepy and a mess right now, but hopefully she will get better. She wasn't happy with that vet after everything they did to her, but its hard to explain to them that it is for their best. My husband was so supportive and worried for her too, lol. He can't believe how the vets offices here are nicer than the human clinics in Iraq, lol. He says our animals live better than Iraqis do!

Hey MENA, hope everyone has a great day. I am still suprised over my husband's v-day gift and all the trouble he went through to get it. Not sure how many of you read what he did, I wrote it on one of the Valentines threads. He actually got the Author Jean Sasson to autograph a copy of one of her books I hadn't read yet, plus she sent another book and autographed it, and she sent autographed pictures, a nice card and book marks. Just when I was crying and amazed over that, my phone rings and my husband tells me to answer it. It was the Author calling to wish me a happy Valentines day!!! She talked to me for about 5 minutes. Her books are mostly biographies for women from the middle east. She has traveled all over there including Saudi, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, etc. If any of you like to read I really recommend her books. The most famous one is a Princess Trilogy she did where a Saudi Princess told her story of living and growing up in Saudi.

I remember your picture though I don't remember all of your story. I am glad to know you are doing fine and made it through the hurdle of the first year. I am part way into mine. Some of the things you said I can really relate to. Things are a little better for us as my husband has amazing patience and had realistic expectations. My husband should be getting his EAD card in the next couple weeks but he is technically authorized to work now based on the stamp on his I-94 card. He got his SSN number about a month ago but I put him in a class first so he could have some kind of US certification. He graduated yesterday from his class and plans to go out tommorow to apply for jobs. I'm not sure what kind of timeline all of this would fall in but I think he is on the right track. The hardest part for my husband is he is a medical school graduate but can't work as a doctor. For now he is willing to take whatever job he can so I thank God for that.

I'm sure each man is different on what works for him. They need at least a few weeks to a month after arrival to adjust and get the hang of things. After that it is a matter of them just trying to find work once they have authorization. The economy definitely makes things hard so what I did is search for what jobs are the most in demand. Though it is well beneath my husband's level, I saw the job with the most openings is nurse's assistant. It isn't glamorous and isn't the greatest pay, but it is a job and a step in the right direction. Try to look for what is available in your area and requires little or no training for your husband. That is my suggestion. Good luck!

What kind of class did you find for your husband? My problem is that my fiance is coming from Guatemala and did not graduate high school, he quit school at 16 to start working. He also does not speak hardly any English. Since we are going the K-1 process and will have a few months before receiving EAD, the general plan is to get GED (offered in Spanish!) and to work on learning Spanish so he can at least handle an interview, even if the actual job doesn't require a lot of English. He has only done restaurant work in Guatemala and as he lives in a tourist town, he has picked up his English that way - we always speak in Spanish but if I ask him what he ate for dinner, he almost always responds in English smile.gif He has said he will do anything, sure there are jobs he prefers over others, but he wants to work ASAP. With my income as a teacher we can make it, but we really want to start saving money to have kids within a year or two biggrin.gif Either way, any ideas for jobs for those who don't really speak English yet? BTW, glad you all here in MENA aren't against hearing from those from elsewhere wink.gif

I sent my husband to a Nurse's Aid class. It cost about $1000 and is a 4 day a week class for 3 weeks. At the end of the class your certified and can get a job at a hospital or nursing home. If you do a job search in the medical field you will see there is a high demand for Nurse's aid. The pay isn't great, depending on the area it is between $7 to $12 an hour but it gets them started on something, will give a reference for later and is an easy job to get. Not only that but the job usually comes with medical benefits which is important.

I think it sounds nice what you are doing. Nothing makes me feel better more than doing a little decorating and spicing the home up. I change up my bathroom about every two years. Just changed the bedroom up with completely new furniture early this year. I've slowly been working on my living room, but don't have the money for new couches yet. For now I got the curtains and wall hangings I want. My entertainment center is fairly new so if I can just change up the couch, get a love seat and change the in-tables, I could be set. If only my husband could get here and get any kind of job then it could free up money for this!

I love the chair you picked. It looks nice and comfy. I'm sure a them with the colors you mentioned would look really nice.

Oh, you know what my backup was? I had an international cell phone with me. I gave my family the sim card numbers and cell phone info in case I dissappeared so they could find me, lol. I of course didn't need it, but at least I knew there was a good backup should something bad happened (I didn't think it would be my husband so much as other people).

Middle East and North AfricaMena meeting S/O
I met my husband on myspace. Back then I blogged a lot on all kinds of subjects from daily life stuff to politics. One day I posted something with the topic "Your opinion on Iraq". I suggested in the post for people to say real things that should be done about the war rather than just rant that it is bad or good. Well, it happened to reach the top ten political blogs by the next day and my husband saw it. He left a comment on there and mentioned that he usually gets blasted when talking about his view of the war, but wanted to say his point anyway. Well, I was the type that so long as no one was rude or too agressive in my blogs, then they were free to post what they wanted. Nothing he said was bad or angry or anything. Just really good suggestions. Anyway, that got us to talking and before long we were on yahoo messenger chatting all the time. Eventually we decided to meet up and if things went well we would get married. As you can see, things went well and we got married. We actually deleted both our myspace accounts a couple months before getting married though. Too much drama on there.

Middle East and North AfricaSunday.... Sunday
I have expensive and cheap towels and never had a problem with either one. I don't do anything special except I don't wash them each time I use them. It causes to much wear and tear and isn't cost effective. I insist everyone hang their towel to dry and then wash them all once a week. My towels have lasted years this way, even the cheap ones. So long as you properly hang them and air them, then there is no problem using the same one through the week. My family has always done this and it works great.

One time I had a roomate who lived with me, she had a son (6 years old) and later her mother stayed with us for awhile. I noticed my towels (and hers) were getting thrown on the floor each day and they kept washing them all the time. It drove me crazy because I have like 20 towels and they would all be dirty within 3 days. I put my foot down by having her son help me label all the towel racks with everyone's name. Then I insisted everyone hang their towel and at least wait a few days before using another one. My friend's son helped me to keep the discipline on this and it helped a lot. He enjoyed his responsibility that allowed him to tell the adults what to do, lol.

My husband only had his permit for one month and that was because I wanted him to get practice time as well as the appointments were backed up for a month. He can drive fairly well except he still doesn't understand the difference between a green light in the left turn lane and a green arrow. I keep telling him he has to yield with the green light but he still nearly got us in a wreak a couple weeks ago by not yielding. Scared me to death, but other than that I haven't had any problems. He is still really nervous and has no desire to drive on highways yet or alone for that matter. I bought a van for him to use but I think it will be a while before he goes out alone. I was just happy he did so great on the driving test. He only got one point off.

Oh, also, in the state where I live once you are 18 you don't have to get the permit, you could just go straight for the license.

Bridget, the play was fantastic. Such a twist on it and it had some great 70's music. The kids really showed so much talent. The costumes were awesome too. My two kids loved it and of course they liked the intermission snacks. I can't see either one of my kids doing the drama thing though. They are much too shy.

S and S...I forgot to tell you earlier congratulations on your hubby getting his license. That is a big accomplishment.

Oh Henna...I so need a pedi. I think I will try and get one next week before my hubby comes home. I don't want him thinking he is sleeping with sand paper blush.gif

Thanks I appreciate it. I thought I was relieved when I got my license at 16, but my husband getting his yesterday was an even bigger relief. You know how hard it is while they are totally dependent on you for transportation. I just have to get him confident enough to drive on his own, but one step at a time, lol.
