Middle East and North AfricaFirst Jobs in the US for MENA SOs
QUOTE (Aymsgirl @ Jun 9 2009, 01:30 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
My husband had no luck finding a job in the same field that he has worked in for 14 years which was the legal field. He did work temporarily for CBS Personnel at Kohl's Distribution Center. This was his first job. It only lasted a few months because he was holiday help. Since then he has worked in a crummy hotel doing whatever they need and at their beck and call and his second job is working at a phone that basically cells everything but their specialty is cell phones. The owner is a man from Jordan. His pay is basically below minimum wage and he is promised that once he learns the job it will doubled. We will see......

I like Reeses16 advice. We did most of those but almost and still are losing hope. It's hard going from attorney to housekeeper ya know? You have to do what you have to do though. I can only advise persistance. I hope one day it pays off for us.

I'm sorry you have had so many difficulties too. I knew it would be hard, but I really thought the health care industry would be easier, especially after I sent him through nursing assistant school as there is a demand for those jobs. Hopefully something will turn up.

Middle East and North AfricaFirst Jobs in the US for MENA SOs
The problem is my husband is a medical school graduate. It will take a couple years to get through the exams and start residency so for now he must find some other work. We had hoped to keep him in the medical field with a lower job. I even sent him through Nursing Assistant school and he got the certification for that. He has applied through two health care systems, but no call back. The hospital recruiter at one really wants to help him, but the managers keep saying my husband is over qualified. It is really frustrating. He even took the hospital tests for both Nursing Assistant and Medical Assistant (though he didn't go to Medical assistant school) and he passed both tests. We tried the nursing homes, but they want him to switch his license to the state we moved to and that takes time, though we will do it. For now, the nursing homes will not even look at his application.

Middle East and North AfricaFirst Jobs in the US for MENA SOs
Since my husband and I moved and can seriously start his job search, it has been really difficult. The economy doesn't help of course, but many of the jobs he has looked at required 1 year experience and/or certifications which require school. I am curious what were some of the jobs other SOs started out with so we can have a better idea of what to do. We are considering a wide range at this point because he really needs to work as I'm going back to school. Thanks for any input.

I just got done looking at your beautiful pictures and girl...u lit up that mans world (and he yours). How special those days will always be. I know its hard to see it this way right now but I hope you are able to look back on those moments and smile knowing that you gave him the happiest days he could have ever asked for. He also gave you the most beautiful memories to hold dear and you will eventually be able to share that love that you two shared and smile on those memories.

I'm sittin here crying with you tonight coz knowing that one of my girls is hurting this way just breaks my heart. I have a bad habit of taking on my friends' heartaches as my own. I don't know why I do that but I like to think that when that happens...maybe, just maybe it will lighten up the sorrow on their end just a little bit and help them to begin the healing process a little bit faster. If I could take on all of your grief right now, I truely would. I mean that with the bottom of my heart and anyone that really knows me can vouch for the truth behind that statement.

If there is ANYTHING I can do to help you, please let me know.

We love ya girl
Amal

Your so sweet Amal. Anyone should be happy to have you as their friend.

Henna Rose, none of this is as you expected, or as you would choose, but, your sweet husband died knowing that he was loved and that the woman he loved had made a sacred commitment to him and to him alone. This is a gift of great value, one that means that he did not die without you in his life and his heart. God put you in his path so that you would each know true acceptance, love and mercy. You were his angel on earth, and now he is yours in spirit. The two of you are together in the Heart of God.

There is no love without pain, but no love at all is even more painful. May you find solance in remembering how your time together was about joy and giving. You will see him again.

That was beautiful VW. Very well said. cray5ol.gif

I know it must be hard for u to update us as you are going through such difficult times. Thank you Henna.
I was thinking that the comment "god wanted him" is probably right and god did want to give you a husband. He also wanted to give your husband the most wonderful wife/partner/love before his time was done here on earth. You are such a wonderful person and I see why God chose you to fill that spot.
I'm keeping you in my prayers every day. I'm free any time if u need to talk, yell, cry, scream, anything.

Maybe those of you that are muslim can explain the thought process behind that comment (God wanted him) and help her understand from your perspective. I have some insight on it but not enough to explain it well. There are things we will never understand in our finite human minds and no one can understand the ways of God. But to a non-muslim, this comment can be hurtful so I'd like to help her understand.

I am muslim, but I converted a year and a half ago. The thing I can say about Islam is muslims believe that when it is your time to die then that is it. It doesn't matter where you are or what you are doing. God will take you. So it means there is nothing you could do to prevent it or stop it. It is not an easy thing to take for some people. I don't think that muslims necessarily resign themselves to their fate. We just believe that when it is time to go we have to accept it. That doesn't make the pain less for anyone, muslims included. It is just a way of believing.

Your mind & spirit could also be affecting your body & health. It goes both ways. Either way, I hope you get in under control soon. good.gif

I totally agree with that. Mind, Body, and Spirit are all connected.

I imagine your husband will lecture you too when he finds out. My husband freaks out about anything related to my health. I broke my little toe last year and he was really upset. He said I was not allowed to break "His" toes!

Just take care of yourself and it sounds like you've got some good suggestions. Though the stress of not talking to your husband and the immigration process probably don't help you.

He may but it's a waste of time coz I could just shoot back, "Don't blacken my lungs with your icky cigs." whistling.gif

Considering I blacken my own lungs (and he does preach to me about it though he smokes way more than I do). I can't use that line. I'll have to come up with something else until I can manage to quit sad.gif Pray for me to quit though. I know I should. I just don't have the desire enough. Its really frustrating. Have any of you tried any of those cleanse diets or anything similar? I saw one recently I thought I might try. I think it's called the master cleanse diet. Sounds awful but I wonder if it works?

30 minutes, 5 days a week is what has been recommended. The study suggested we need about twice that much, 275 minutes a week, which breaks down to 55 minutes, 5 days a week, to lose weight and keep it off. But that's moderate exercise, like walking.
link

I'm walking 35 minutes a day, 7 days a week, so I'm 30 minutes short for the week. I walk 7 days just to help me keep the momentum (and have a few extra calories to eat during the day kicking.gif ) but when I start strength training, I'll probably do that every other day.

Almost every day at the park, there's a group of 20-somethings (men and women) playing ultimate frisbee. They must do that most days. There's so much movement, I don't think those women have to do anything extra to keep the weight off. I'm not ready for ultimate frisbee, but there's also a disc golf course around the perimeter, and I was addicted to that a couple of years ago. That isn't aerobic enough for what I need right now, but I could tack some of that on after the walk. It's a great stress reliever.

Today I realized I could, in theory, reach my ultimate goal weight by my birthday, although I know weight loss tends to slow over time as the body adjusts. And I'm not going to cut calories severely because that doesn't work and because I want a plan I can live with. But it's good to see what's possible, at least on paper.

So, then, hard cardio would be different, right? I probably do about 4.5 hours of exercise a week. Some of that is pretty good cardio. How long does that give you then to make your goal if you do it by your birthday? is that a total goal or a minigoal?

I've fasted the last two years, and this has been my experience also. By the end of it all, I haven't lost anything. I don't stay up any later at night though. This year my husband will be working from about 4 pm - 2 am, and I'm worried about getting the munchies alone. I won't be walking during that month either. I've been planning to do exercise tapes an hour or so after breaking the fast, but I might try getting a day pass at the gym and doing some water aerobics. I don't know if I'd get too thirsty doing that before sundown or not.

I'm very curious if the water areobics wil lhelp you stay a bit more hydrated. Let us know how it goes!

I would think you would get just as dehydrated. Swimming in a chlorinated pool actually dehydrates you.

Yes, I got the impression that hard cardio would be different and that the article referred more to people who were significantly overweight, as I am, and trying to control it with walking or something similar, which is what doctors often tell us. I did once have a doctor tell me that if I walked briskly for an hour a day, every day, that I would never have to worry about my weight, and I think he was probably right about that.

My birthday is in May, and I'm setting my caloric intake to try to lose at a relatively slow, steady pace. I have quite a lot to lose (gained most of it in the last six years), and at this point, it helps me to set several minigoals based on BMI thresholds or on what I have weighed at certain times in the past, how I felt at that time, what I was able to do at that time. For example, at this time, I weighed approximately this amount, and I remember hiking this many miles to a waterfall or running up a couple flights of stairs. So that approximate weight is a minigoal because I can look forward to enjoying that kind of activity again when I reach that weight. It helps the ultimate goal feel a little less overwhelming.

wow, that is a really good idea for anyone! I wish you the best of luck.

OK! Well.... I feel thinner today and that counts, right? LOL! Yesterday I ate so many things out of my garden, and I felt really good.. but today when I added up my calories I had only eaten 1216! I did a count at:

http://www.freedieti..._calculator.htm

and it shows you what you need to maintain or diet. So I was right on thinking I needed about 1500. Today I have about 1600, so I figure it kind of makes up for yesterday! And yay for falling pants! My pants are getting really loose. I can't wear my other work pants yet though, gotta keep wearing these for a couple more size changes before I can get into those. I think i may have gone down a size. I'm scared to check, though, and get depressed.

Do those of you who are muslim or ramadan sympathists (ie fasting with your husband) lose weight over the holiday? If I fasted all day I would definately lose weight than is when I do most of my eating. I think about yom kippur and we fast all day and after that I eat a few biscuit cookies and a brothy chicken soup and cant eat anymore so its not like I eat all of the calories at night. I know in mena people stay up all night and sleep all day so could do all of their eating at night but Im thinking most people here work during hte day so its only a limited period during the night, no? Just curious.

I fast and like you said I can't eat that much at the end of the day because my stomach shrank. My husband told me to eat a little, then pray the maghrib prayer and then eat more. That didn't work out so well. Its like my stomach is shrink wrap and was happy with the little I ate and wouldn't let more in. So after that I just ate as much as I could fit (still not as much as normal) and then tried to eat a small snack before bed. I've never been a big eater when first getting up so that meal was small too. I am really small to begin with so I probably only lost 2 pounds in the first couple weeks (and I had lost about 8 pounds before that which I didn't need to be losing but my stress was high). Then when I went to the middle east we stayed up all night so I could eat more. I gained back the 2 pounds then, lol. This year I will be in America the whole time so I'll probably lose weight again. I put on about 5 pounds since Ramadan so it will not be as big of a deal.

Yeah, I can't imagine you were happy about it. My husband has this habit of trying to force feed me more than what I can eat. Did your husband do that? It is one reason I worry that when my husband comes he will make me gain too much weight. I already told him no force feeding. I informed him it makes me gag and if he keeps doing it I swear I will throw it up and then where will he be? He promises to not do it, but we will see, lol. I swear I will have a full mouth and he will keep trying to make me eat more before I am done chewing so it really does make me gag. I like to eat slow.

Well, he insists he won't eat unless I am eating, and what happens is he starts starving because we're on opposite schedules.. so i eat something, antyhing, to get him to eat. Then he'll insist we need tons of rice or whatever. he doesn't make me eat things I say I cannot eat because I'll vomit though. We went through that with peanuts and coffee. he tried to force feed me peanuts and I got really sick and just threw up. Next time, he insisted I needed coffee-- I hate it to begin with, and he kept insisting I drink more. I also threw up everywhere for that too. So, after having me throw up (once on him), he's learned his lesson and more or less leaves me alone now. So, you may ctually jsut go ahead and throw up on him-- who knows, it may work. I think they think we're exaggerating.

I also inadvertantly taught him the American meaning of putting your empty, palm-up cupped hand under someone's mouth.... you know how a mom wants you to spit your gum out and does that? Or whatever is in your mouth? Apparently, for them it's that they want some of whatever you've got, from the bowl or whatever... like if you're eating pumpkin seeds they want you to hand them some pumpkin seeds. instead I looked at him really confused while I was chewing and he made the facial indication to "go ahead" (raising his eyebrows, which he meant to indicate towards the bowl on the table). So I just spit out the entire contents of my chewed up pumpkin seeds in his hand. The look on his face was priceless. I immediately asked him WHY he wanted MY seeds. he calmly tossed my seed mush, washed his hand, and said he wanted non-chewed seeds from the bowl.

Your story really made me feel better, lol. Now I know I'm not the only one and I have your advice for how to deal with him. That is too funny. Thanks for sharing that!

Vegetables are great by the way! Though I ruin it somewhat because I steam them and then throw a bunch of butter on them so I might get the vitamins, but I gain the extra fat from the butter, lol.

Butter is my downfall as well, it's so fabulous! Yeah, I gained about 35-40 lbs. I think for anyone, gaining 40lbs is not something they usually like... especially when it's all fat, you know?

That just made me lose more weight. Now I've dropped to a 4, but I'm trying to get back to a 6 because my husband and his family complain I don't eat enough and I'm too small. Ironically excercising again makes me put on the weight and helps increase my appetite.

I was a 2/4, then he came and I became like an 8/10. So, he's strongly encouraging me to get back to a 2/4 lol! Also,, nothing fits, so that's not cool! When I work out, I can bascially eventually eat whatever I want mroe ro less and not worry too much.. especially since I do prefer vegetables 90% of the time.

Great plan!

Good site, Jenn! I don't know if I would stop strength workouts. You're only going to get as buff as you have the testosterone for... and it is only magnified by the ammount of body fat you lose. Maybe less reps on your arms and more stretching. Stretching is the way to make yourself leaner.... you need to work on that I would think if you want to avoid some of the bulk. So pilates may be the way to go as a way to maintain some strength training and combine it with stretching. What are you doing for strength right now?

Well, I gained weight. At first I was depressed, won't lie about that! But I think it's 2-fold: 1) precycle gain and 2) I lost more inches so I think i may be having muscle gain.

When I first started working out I gained almost 20 pounds in muscle over a two month period. I was skinny as a rail so I knew it had to be muscle and it actually made me look more filled out. It sounds like a good sign for you! Also, I definitely put on a little weight and get bloated just before the cycle so I can relate to you there.

I walked from my car to the building this morning! good.gif

Normally I wait for the shuttle since our parking lot is a good 10 minute walk to the building but this morning it was so nice out.

I hearby commit to walking to and from my car to the building. (did that sentence make sense?)

Unless it's snowy or rainy. innocent.gif

Good plan! good.gif And the exceptions are reasonable.

S & S - thanks for sharing your recommendations on working out during Ramadan - I bet a lot of ladies will find your advice very helpful.

So the morning work out was a great experience - kept me going through the whole date and left me craving more. I had planned to go back home and do the second part of my work out - the strength & stretch but as always my planes have changed. I went out for lunch and the weather was just so gorgeous I decided that I should walk home from the city. To make a long story short I end up going to Sports Authority and finally purchased the pedometer I meant to get and then stopped at the Container Store and had enough - still did a good amount of walking so I feel good nonetheless - tomorrow is another day.

Lost in NY, thats great that you are so motivated and you got a pedometer! I've been telling myself for years that I should get one of those. You are ahead of me there. Usually I end up just running for a set time and then going back with my car to measure the distance, lol. The pedometer would be a lot easier.

Today I did some squats sad.gif I can barely walk my legs are so worn out!

Lost in NY, I am so glad to hear your workout went well. The warm-up is definitely the hardest part (and waking up, lol). Keep the motivation up and you will be happy with the results.

I was so horrible last week and didn't work out in the morning, but I managed to get up and run 4 miles this morning. God, I was dragging in the beginning, but I had a couple run partners to keep me motivated. I think anytime you are going outside to walk or run it is a big help to have a partner.

I tried working out in the morning last Ramadan and, uh, to say the least, it is not easy. I ran 3 miles the second day into Ramadan and spent the rest of the day dying of thirst because I couldn't replace the water. I made it and didn't break my fast, but I decided running was out of the question if I was to make it the whole month. After that I kept the excercise to a minimum. Like I would get on a stationary bike for 20 minutes, do stretching or do the eliptical (sp?) machine. Nothing for too long and also wait awhile after you have sahur (your last meal before fasting). I made the mistake of trying to work out 30 minutes after eating and gulping water, that didn't go too well for me either. These are my recomendations for those that really want to try keeping some kind of routine going and still fast.

I'm trying to revamp my routine since my hubby is back home and I got my "huge" studio all to myself LOL. I

will make an attempt to wake up an hour early and try to do my work out in the morning.

Tomorrow is the first day and i will see if I am actually capable of getting up at 6am hmmmm

With that in mind, I was wondering if I can get some insight from you ladies as to the effectiveness of morning work outs.

Many thanks!
D.

Morning workouts are great in that you will start out more energized for the day. The problem with them is the motivation of getting up early and you are not properly warmed up like you would be later in the day. This can result in a greater risk of injury. Make sure if you chose to work out in the mornings you have good stretching and warm up techniques and you should be fine.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll see how it goes tomorrow. I guess I better go to bed if I want to be up at 6...

No problem! Let us know how it goes for you.

They have a pool and everything and no men allowed on the property at all.... if one is there for something they put up signs and warn you.

I need a place like that in my area! I looked but haven't found anything yet.

I drink at least 64 oz. of water a day excluding what I drink while working out. On the weekends probably significantly less though, since I'm in the habit of drinking while I work and constantly filling up my water bottle.

Thanks! So, maybe my 80 oz isn't that far off. But I just feel I should probably be drinking more.

Thanks Julianna, now you got me drinking more water today!

Maybe it's Ben and Jerry's ice cream!

You know he doesn't even know what that is... and I've never actually had Ben and Jerry's! Usually, when he says something liek this, he either has a piece of jewelry made for me or he has an abaya made for me or he shows up with an heirloom something. I don't know what he would do here though.

Hmmm, yeah, that is harder since you have to think it would be something he could give the other girls. I'll have to think on that one. Maybe he doesn't know yet, lol.

LOL! Olivia! He hasn't given anyone a present yet. he said out of the triad of us at work doing our weight loss thing (both my friends) whoever won at the end of 2 months got a prize from him. He knows i love presents and he KNOWS I am going to die of jealousy so he knew this would make me do what he was hoping, which is drop a bunch of weight so I can ge the present which he will nOT describe to me other than saying I get the same thing as they do (so it's not what you put a spoiler over).

I want a present!! I don't care if it's a rock. I just want it.

I have a proportional leg and torso length, people jsut complain that I am short-- which is opdd because everyone sees me as shorter than I am-- everyone. I'm 5'4" but people remember me and insist I am 5' tall-- which would make me shorter than my own mother whom i tower over. I think it's beacuse of my small frame.

Could also be because I wear flats and people think I am wearing heels. I get that a lot.

I'm not a big fan of heals. If I wear them, they aren't very high. Thats weird they think you are shorter than you are.
