Middle East and North AfricaArabic Slang ~ similar to USA?
My husband told me he can't understand Morrocan dialect, now I see why, lol. None of that is close to the arabic I know. He said Morrocans can't understand Iraqi dialect either so they have to talk in Fusha (Quran/Media arabic).

In Iraqi dialect it is "safia dafia" so the dialects have their similarities!

Middle East and North AfricaArabic Slang ~ similar to USA?
When I was in the middle east I overhead a conversation from some African guys. They definitely weren't from the country I was in and my husband later explained they were refugees. Yet I heard them speaking perfect american street slang. Like I couldn't tell the difference between them and some guys here because they spoke it exactly like they would here. My husband explained that they will pick it up from movies and practice it until they have it perfect. I couldn't believe of all the things to learn from american culture, that street slang would be the favorite thing, lol.

Middle East and North AfricaArabic Slang ~ similar to USA?
One of the slang phrases in Iraq is "Sha ku ma ku?" Which basically means "Whats up?". To answer, you say "Ma ku shee" which means basically "Not much" or "Nothing".

Exactly, I agree, if she really wants a name with a "V", she should just borrow the other letter. Most arabs know what it means.

I love Genevieve! It was one of the names I always wanted... but again with the v thing. Sigh. Maybe I need to launch a single-handed campaign to introduce the "v" into Arabic.

I second that opinion. Persian farsi has one, sometimes they borrow the letter from them if they must write out something in arabic from english that has a "V" in it.

Jihed and I have talked about this alot - well mostly I've talked and he's nodded and said, as long as it's a Muslim name I don't care what it is. Such a typical man lol

For a boy, I LOVE Yassine... good.gif I don't know why, just love saying it hehe But Omar is my favorite caliph (I love the stories about him)

For a girl, I think we'll go with something old and Tunisian.. Sahliha ... My husband cringes when I say this but I just love that name lol He says it's an old person's name and please do not give his child this name!! I like Yasmine... But Yassine and Yasmine -too close I think... And Marwa...

They don't really do middle names in Tunisia - I've seen a few of his cousins that have had babies recently giving them two names, but traditionally just first name and the father's family name...... Or for Jihed.. His legal name.. Jihed ben Mohsen ben Mohammed.. hehe so that could go on for a long time.. But I know that Egypt the second/middle name is the first name of the father, right? Regardless of if the child is male or female?

Which brings me to another question - maybe should be another topic but - How many of you did take or will take your husband's last name? I know in America it's the thing ... You get married and take your husband's last name.. But when I said this to Jihed he was like Huh? Why would you take my last name? lol Right now I still have the last name of my ex/first husband which was easier for my son after the divorce, but I'd really like to lose that last name and I don't want to go back to Maiden, so we talked and I just told him I will legally change my last name to his when he gets here.. He's still a bit confused on it - but I'm curious what the rest of ya'll did?

I changed my last name to my husbands, but I moved my maiden name to my middle name. I actually got that idea from my mother because she did the same thing. It also made things easier while I in the midst of changing my name on everything else like credit cards, etc. If the card was in the old name, at least my ID still had my first name the same and showed my maiden name there. No one ever questioned it.

My husband liked this idea too because it conformed to American and Islamic custom/requirements.

I eat meat so I can't say I am against killing animals for food, I just can't kill them. They have them big eyes and you know they feel pain, I think about someone cutting my throat to bleed me out. I do think it is silly to offer dead animals to God, really, why would this loving being want you to go and cut an animal’s throat for him? Doesn’t make any sense to me what so ever, what does it prove that you can kill? Never understood the whole thing of killing for God, animal or human period, I would think a perfect being doesn’t need you running around and killing animals, but then again what do I know.

The camel meat was not be tossed away or killed "for God" or "offered to God", it was to be distributed to feed the poor. Obviously God doesn't "need" us killing animals, but the poor do need to be and should be fed, and part of any Muslim sacrifice of an animal entails giving all or a sizable portion to the poor.

Exactly, I agree with that.

Middle East and North Africastateside honor killings
I know a girl who was raised in a horrible family upbringing. She could have done whatever she wants and no one would have cared. She got moved around foster homes, etc. Yet she chose to focus on religion. Now she is almost 40 years old and still a virgin. She keeps her heart close to God and helps other kids who have rough lives. I keep praying that she will find a good man to marry. She would be such a great mother. So, the point is, this is a Christian American woman who came from the worst of backgrounds and still chose the right path. It is up to each person to make his or her decision. We have members in my family that were raised right and stayed virgins until marriage as well so it can go both ways.

Honor killings is never an option that should be used. I really get angry whenever I even think of someone doing such a thing. All I can think of is finding the offenders and fighting them publicly and beating them up where they can lose their pride because some small woman beat them and the whole time I would remind them about their so called "Honor" and how I am taking it from them. They would live, but it would be with that embarrassment. I took jui jitsu classes for a couple years and every time I hear about these killings it makes me want to go back and take more classes, lol. I can't help it, it is my weakness that I can't stand to see an injustice on a helpless person (or animal for that matter). I doubt I will ever actually have that chance, but it makes me feel better to think about it.

Since its said to be more cultural to do honor killings... I want to know what the Mens opinions are about this matter of honor killings?? would it be something ever considered if faced with a daughter dating outside the parents religion or who they married or how they dishonored you as a father? Im up for listening to the mens opinions from the MENA group.

Good question!

Middle East and North Africastateside honor killings
I've heard of cases where the woman has an elastic hymen, but of course she doesn't know that. So on her wedding night when it doesn't break, her husband assumes she isn't a virgin and kills her.

There was one case in particular in Saudi where that happened. The husband beat her so badly and broke many of her bones. Then he dragged her by her hair into the hospital so they could inspect her to verify she wasn't a virgin. Of course, they ended up verifying she was a virgin and that the hymen was intact, but elastic. The woman was left disabled for life. The man immediately started apologizing, but of course she asked for divorce. The one happy ending to this story was she did later get married and had children. The man was shunned for his behavior and no man wanted his daughter married to such a guy.

Middle East and North AfricaHow to Make your husband Happy
I once read a forum where it said muslim women must "share" their husbands in heaven because it was said men have it harder to get into heaven so there are many more women in heaven. I was thinking "why would I want to go to heaven if I had to share my husband?". Some of the women on this forum actually told me it was the honorable thing to do since some women wouldn't have husbands to be with in heaven. I said there was no way I was sharing my husband in heaven because then it wouldn't be heaven. Then they told me that there is no jealousy in heaven. So then I responded that what if we went off the other hadith that says there are more men in heaven. Would that mean men would have to share their wives?

Middle East and North Africatravel in jordan
I think it is always better, regardless of the location, to have someone with you. Yet, if you really want to travel alone then just be as careful as posssible, know the areas you travel in well, strengthen your language skills, and just stay aware of your surroundings at all times. When I was in Jordan I was never alone except one taxi ride so I cannot say how it is to go around alone. I only want to advise you that it would be better to have someone you can trust with you and always have a plan for each place you go. You should know all possible modes of transportation for the area, if it has higher crime, how you can prevent crimes against you, and the exact route back to your hotel. This way you will not feel lost if something bad does happen.

I agree with the comments about D. I voted for her because she dresses nice, but conservative and the look in her eyes shows so much wisdom. I also agree that none of us can be for sure who is a good muslim or bad. That is up to God to decide. Before we ever judge others we should look at ourselves and our own sins first.

For Olivia and Donna:

My husband is a doctor and graduated from medical school just a few years ago. Due to the situation in his home country he couldn't really do his residency though he has done some interning through a hosptial outside of Iraq. He has started studying for steps 1 and 2, we know about 3 though we worry about the first two now. I bought a couple books he can use when he gets here, but any suggestions you both have would be great. My husband's english is excellent and his whole medical school was in english, so I am not worried about that part. I just worry about what kind of work he should do until he is ready to take the tests and until he can start a residency.

well he will probably just have to take whatever he can until he can get into a residency. hassan couldnt get any job. he begged for a job at a sleep clinic and they told him...we wont hire u cuz u will just leave and we cant invest time in training u and then u leave. he applied at some factories and never got called. they probably just laughed at his application and said ####### is a doctor appling for a job for.

he did do an observership for 6 months in the hospital he is in now. he hoped it would help him in getting a job there. well it didnt. they wouldnt hire him. so he just kept going and begging and the program director said...ok ill interivew u but i doubt u will get hired. ur scores are under what we allow. well of course he didnt match and it was his only interview so we were loosing hope. one week before the starting date for all new interns they called and said he was hired...dont know what the sudden change of heart was...maybe cuz someone they hired didnt show up or maybe cuz the program director was dieing of cancer and wanted to do something nice...but who cares..he got hired!!!

its probably best for him to get his study materials there. they are a heck of alot cheaper then here. i think kaplin has a good study program. they get the same book there as we get here only theirs is the knock off version. u know someone buys the book and copies them to sell.

im not sure (i didnt check ur timeline) but make sure he brings all his documents from the college...i dont know what they are called but look like a report card to me. any letter of recomdations, his deploma of course. i cant remember what else he had to have.

Thank God he brought all his documents from school with him when he left Iraq and it is all stamped and certified. I'm half-way thinking it is better he doesn't mention he went to medical school so he can get a job. Since he is coming as a refugee, they will get him a temporary job in the beginning regardless, but in the long term it may help to not mention his schooling. He doesn't have his masters yet, but from what I understand that is not necessary to start out. I bought him a book called "First Aid for the USMLE step 2 CK". Do you know if this book will be helpful?
