Yeah, that was the first rule my husband made when I joined this site. I am cheating and posting the cat since he didn't specify she couldn't be shown, lol.

I cheated a few months ago and actually posted a pic of us together for a bit, but then took it down. I think I put another one up too. Sometimes I cheat and post a pic of me as a little kid, but then I feel bad and take that down too lol. I haven't posted pics of my cats in forever. I feel really protective over them LOL.

lol, protective of the cats. luv.gif

I haven't cheated on that, though I once revealed on a mena slumber party which state I'm in, but my husband banned me from giving my location out either.

One of the things I've seen the men do to support their families is start a business in a tourist town and then charge the tourist more than what they would charge someone of their own nationality but not as much as the tourist would have to pay back home.

I'm thinking along the lines of corprate businesses that require more of the people with the University degrees. I'm not an expert on these things, but there has to be a way to do it.

The problem with starting your own business there is getting a loan and having the money to do it I would imagine... and then you have to have something so cheap that other people will buy it.

Your right, thats why I think the government would be better off doing business loans as opposed to paying people to do nothing. There are lots of ways to encourage business growth. It is a matter of implementing them.

Middle East and North AfricaUniversity graduates protest for jobs
I think the biggest problem is a lack of people starting their own businesses in order to create the jobs. If the government encouraged people to start up companies, then those companies would create jobs. Just a thought. There is probably more to it then I know, but in America thats how we create jobs outside of the government.

Julianna...actually...your hubby is RIGHT! They do have sites you can download DVD quality movies from within a week or two of release...Olivia mentioned them...not the really crappy movies you see that you can hear the audience coughing in the theatre but these are from the DVD's actually....its amazing. You can get a high quality copy within a week or a few from release on these sites online. It's illegal here but not overseas (well not monitored). Besides...who's to say its stealing? LOL Perhaps movies makers are stealing our money charging us so much to see many of those crappy movies out there now! devil.gif

But that's not burning it off of a legal DVD which is what he was saying, those are bootlegs from the pre-screenings that are done by movie theater employees and such before the public even gets in there... I used to know people who did this. then they encode it and post it for download, etc. It's still bootlegging. Also, the majority of these things in Jordan are made in Syria where it's not illegal for them as they don't care what international copyright law is smile.gif

Yeah, I definitely saw them openly selling copied DVDs in Syria right on the street everywhere.

I have no idea WHY that is so hard for him to believe that THAT is bootlegging. He kept insisting they were copied off the DVDs from the US and I was trying to explain to him we don't release movies for home release for a few months after theatre release-- so that's not possible. Even now those movie trailers confuse the heck out of him. He keeps asking me if we can go rent something that has a trailer saying it was coming out, say, July 15th and I say, a bazillion times over, that is IN THE THEATRE. Sigh.

I gave my husband a long speech about how that is stealing. He was always trying to get me to take the copied cheap versions and I kept refusing. My husband hates stealing, but I had to really explain why it is because he had seen nothing wrong with it. I told him that movie and song producers spend a lot of money making these items. In the west we pay a lot for them so those companies can make their money back and a profit which encourages them to make more. If everyone in the middle east just buys illegal copies, the companies make no money from it, so that means Americans and other countries must shoulder the full cost. It could be cheaper for us if other parts of the world paid for the originals. Now of course the prices of an original DVD in Jordan are crazy. They could pay $80 or $100 for a DVD we only pay $20 or less for. How can anyone in Jordan afford that so of course it drives them to buy the copies. I understand that. I just refuse to do it so long as I have the means to pay for an original. Sometimes I can't buy a DVD because I"m short on cash so then I wait until I do have the money.

I think what these companies need to do is adjust prices in each country according to what the people can afford to pay. I am sure there is a way to profit from it and then it will stop most of the black market copies. People prefer originals, but if they can't afford them they will turn to cheap copies. Its a simple matter of supply and demand (and ability to pay).

I live in Atlanta and gone through it many times. I am always upset how long it takes so really the 5 hour layover is ideal. Also, I have mounds of paperwork to sort through and credit card offers to destroy. I wish I would just file the paperwork away right when I'm done with it (or throw it away as need be) and shred the offers as they come in, but I don't. I always end up collecting them in piles for months and then spend a weekend sorting it all out.

Oh, I do that same stuff. then, i stuff it in boxes or the closet or under the beds, etc. Finally, I have to clean... so... I clean out closets first because then I can put away big items I took out and never returned like suitcases, etc... and then I can start to organize blanket piles and whatnot. That's why i do it like that. Even though my room still sucks bad, now it is 80% paper suck, which I will just start stacking into boxes and then take one box at a time and go through it until i have no more boxes. It's usually easier to look at one box in a sea of boxes than to try to organizine papers in a room where you can't find the floor and everything is like knee+ deep. What I wish, though, is that he would agree to go mattress shopping. He hates outr mattress, and I wouldn't mind getting a new one and then setting ours up on the futon frame for his sister. Our mattress isn't bad, it's just not what he likes.

He isn't able to verify he'd get the time off and if he disobeyed military orders to spend the time with me while I was there we know that he would be put into military prison when he went back to his service. That and the ticket prices have gone up far more than the first time I went to visit him. It didn't seem worth the risk. We choose to save the money for that ticket and apply it to when I go to Egypt after my college graduation in May. He is released from the Military the last week of April 2009 for certain now unless some crazy thing happens that prevents that. I graduate May 2009 and will be traveling to Egypt shortly afterwards.

In addition to the 1-2 hr talks online once a month if he can spare the time we do use the site www.twitter.com to send msgs to each other every few days. I send maybe twice what he does. He goes on the credit system with his cell phone so sometimes he can't recieve everything I send or send as much to me as we'd like. Since the military took him communication has really gone to a slow drip though. He does write me long letters while he's serviing and then mails them to me when he gets a break. It's just so strange going from talking everyday for 6-15 hours to talking to him 1-2 hrs a month with a few msgs here and there on the cell and some long letters I get in the mail. sad.gif

I feel so bad for you. I can't imagine having communication slow down that much. It can't be easy. I hope maybe he can find a better way. I guess with mandatory military service they don't have to make their soldiers happy like we do here, lol.

Well on his last break, which was reduced to 48 hours from the original seven days, he says he got some cell phone service where he can chat online with me daily. However, when he got to whereever he was stationed in a tent in the desert the coverage wasn't working for chat but he can get on the internet. He says on his next break in about 3 weeks he will get it figured out. That's about the same time I go back up to school. Anyways I've lived with this for seven months and it hasn't been fun but it's what we have to do until this passes.

Wow thx S and S for answering that. Do you have the link to the program online so I could watch it? At my Mom's we don't subscribe to any kind of TV. I really like what you said about when you study the religion don't study the muslims. That rang a bell of truth for me as I believe that as well and sometimes get distracted by responses to my questions on here. I also think that was what Waleed was trying to get across to me during the discussion of raising children. He was saying consider the sources you get your informaiton from and understand it's him that I love and trust and he would teach our children Islam, the gentle parts, the peaceful parts that the rest of the world isn't shown as much. I did get to see some of that in Egypt with his family and friends and it was refreshing.

Now I am more curious about this progressive Islam Noura spoke about. So there is a form of Islam that is progressive and doesn't accept some of these things and not all Muslims have to? What does it mean to you? They studied it with scholars and have a better understanding?

Tammy what is a mufti? Whenever I go to those sites I always get lost and don't even no where to begin as it becomes a bit overwhelming. So I'll go to the section that has sound bytes of them reciting the Quran and listen to that to calm down because it sounds like a beautiful song.

Dorothy I know what you mean. When learning about religion I try to remain objective taking it all in but it a bit of a culture shock for me if one could call it that.

The link that I was looking at is in the thread for muslims that alhamdulillah posted. It is live feed tv on the site and has various programs. It will be hit or miss if it is something you want to know, but it is a nice channel and is mostly in english.

http://www.huda.tv/defaultN.aspx?rt=15

This is a site with a women's forum where you can ask questions from other women and read what other women have asked. I like to refer to this and you can learn a lot from it:

http://www.islamicit...pics.asp?FID=47

My other favorite videos to watch and learn about Islam with some humor is in the following link. This guy explains everything in a great way and is more progressive like you are looking for:

http://ummahfilms.bl...y-religion.html (I put the link on a good video for you but you can see the list of other videos on the right side.)

I'm glad if I could be some help to you. I hope you enjoy the links I am sending you. Definitely check out the bottom link because I am sure you will like it a lot.

Itis possible to read the Quran and understand it to mean that it is so impossible to do correctly that it by default becomes not correct to do. Like Noura, its a more progrerssive interpretation, but quite legitimate- as least as legitimate as more traditional understandings. Only God knows.

I didn't say it was against Islam. I said it is banned in some muslim countries. I said it is difficult to do, but not impossible. I was trying to explain it shouldn't be some kind of luxery for a man. It was meant to help women under certain circumstances. Do you have different ideas on that?

I wasn't trying to correct you. I thought you put your ideas (which are held my many muslims) quite nicely. I know from some scholarship reading that by reading the verses completely, it can be interpreted to be not allowed in Islam by default of its difficult for mankind to live by these standards. It's a much mroe rogressive view and a minority view.

okay, I see what you are saying. Yes, you are right.

I'm glad you did because that was some pretty pitiful typing on my part. I am having a hard reading it blush.gif

No, I understand that. Sometimes I'm in such a hurry to type out my points that I totally mess up the wording smile.gif

Ya I
I wonder why you'd marry someone who follows a religion you hate? Oh well.... Que Sera, Sera!! star_smile.gif

I wanted to correct that too! There's so many times I want to correct typos/misspellings that I see on here (cuz I'm ####### abt that stuff when it happens repeatedly).
Good question..........

Does that help answer the question. Do you muslimias seriously believe I hate Islam because I question it? And why doesn't anyone answer those questions for me about the several wives & beating wives acceptance? Everytime I bring it up it becomes a moot point on here. What I don't understand is how someone who isn't raised that way comes to accept those beliefs?

Olivia, I think it is smart of you to question these things. I did too when I was learning about Islam. Those questions were some of mine too. As for beating wives, I was just watching a show last night on an Islamic channel where they discussed that thing. I was talking to you at that time. I should have told you to tune in if I had known you wanted to know more about it (its an online link). Anyway, they stressed that it is not right to run around hitting your wife and is deeply discouraged. It is a last resort and even then it shouldn't be used. The prophet (peace be upon him) never hit his wives. Please don't believe this is really accepted. Some families just look the other way on this point and some families don't. I know my husband's family is against taking such measures.

As for the multiple wives, that is actually banned in some muslim countries. It was meant for during war when there were many widows and no one to support them. Many men had died and these women with children had no one to turn to. The first wife should always agree before her husband marries another woman. It is unlawful for him to marry another without her permission (in most schools of thought). Also, the man must be able to financially support each wife seperately with her own home. Otherwise he cannot marry more than one. Another thing is he much treat each wife equally, if he cannot do that, then he is not supposed to marry more than one. There are so many stipulations it is impossible for most muslim men to lawfully marry a second wife or more. Under Islam it is always better to only have one wife unless there are extreme circumstances for marrying more. Some countries encourage it, but that doesn't mean it is right under Islam. When you study Islam, please don't study the muslims, study the religion. This is what you should teach any children you have.

I hope I have helped you in some way on these issues. If you have other questions please let me know and I will be happy to help the best I can.
