So Bill, tell me...why CANT i stay [positive...out of those here...you'd think I'd have the RIGHT to be negative...

Sorry if I offended anyone or you Bill. I just sometimes dont understand why you can't just be positive. We are all realistic here..we KNOW the wait times we are looking at. Just TRY for once to see the glass as half full and NOT half empty.

You have every right to be positive, and I don't think Bill was telling you to be negative. But he and others have every right to be negative or realistic or however people choose to see it, as much as every other person has a right to be positive. I'm not trying to attack you personally, amrssnowangel, I'm just trying to say that there are people on this board with different needs. Personally, I find it hard to listen to the constant cheering for VSC when the pace is barely moving... but I wouldn't want to discourage people from doing that or trying to be positive about it because that is what they need to do. I just read on and try to take from it what I can.

QUOTE (Bob & Kim @ Oct 18 2007, 04:56 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
...I appreciate the realism from those presenting it in our thread...the May folks represent the most senior members in the thread and have suffered the longest. If the baby is ugly, it's an ugly baby no matter how you look at it. VSC is an ugly baby. Approving 1 person in how long isn't such great service to us...there is no rationalization that helps our situation. They (USCIS as an entity) is failing us--dishing out terrible service to US citizens is a disgrace to the US. On top of that, this process is for many of our loved ones, their first impression of our country. What an awful representation...disgusting actually.

LOL, wonderful analogy.

I was certainly not trying to chase anybody from our thread, but I am just as sick of hearing people root for VSC as they are of hearing me criticize them. When it is time for me to root and be happy I will...that day won't come until VSC proves to me that they are treating us reasonably and timely. I am not only down on them because I have been waiting since May, but I am also considering the impact this will have and is having on the July, August, etc etc filers until they get their ####### together. I know that most of us complaining the loudest are also doing all we can do outside of VJs to influence a positive change; writing congressmen in and out of our states, writing USCIS and DHS officials, media, etc, etc. We need to channel all our energy into turning the USCIS negative trend around and not use it to cheer for them while they give us atrocious service. I agree to be hopeful that eventually it will come, but I see nothing wrong with sharing our frustration and teaming to influence positive change.

I actually wish amrssnowangel the best with her loved one and hope they are together sooner rather than later.

I think it's an ugly baby personally, but IMO there is a little men are from mars women are from venus thing going on here... i.e., seems women like the cheering on vsc? men a little more demanding?

Hello all:
Well, I sat in on the teleconference like some others here and I took some notes to pass on to those of you who could not make it. Please understand there were many times when although they were focused on receipting issues, you could hear the nuances of the effects on us.

1. The ombudsman had a USCIS guest there from USCIS. Her name was Debra Rogers and she was the Division Chief of Information and Customer Service and claimed she had over 20 years of experience. She had what appeared to be a script of things that she just read from, most defending USCIS and addressing receipting. She would not entertain questions from teleconference participants...of course appologizing for that.

2. One of them said USCIS received over 1.2 million types of cases/applications this summer and they are proud that they are down to a backlog of "just" 480,000. They also said all I-485s were caught up. They said this "frontlog" of cases has affected many applicants (us being some of them of course, without directly commenting on us).

3. She said the receipting delay is their highest priority and they are working overtime and weekends on them.

4. She said they will continue to apply all available resources to receipting (of course I interpreted this as more delays to us).

5. She said they work things First In, First Out, but there are a small percentage that require a "little" more attention and get sent to another more specialized set of staff members to look at.

6. The ombudsman said USCIS uses the Received Date and not the Notice Date to prioritize their work.

7. The ombudsman said each time you call the USCIS you should note the date, time, operator or employee #, and where you called from. If you feel you received erroneous information he wants to know about it and for you to email him the information you noted to help them in identifying the person you spoke to. I also believe he meant poor customer service in general as USCIS leadership seems to believe the cutomer service reps are being very professional now.

8. The ombudsman openly and strongly expressed that he has a lot of frustration with USCIS and even he has trouble getting information he asks for. He said even what he considers as simple statistics USCIS seemingly cannot get them for him. He said after waiting way too long (weeks) USCIS sent him a page of information that did not even answer his request.

9. He said too many excuses are being put on the fact that USCIS received many more applications/cases than they expected before the announcement of the fee increase.

10. He appologized for not taking any questions during the teleconference (other than some that were emailed to him during it). He asked those of us in the teleconference with questions/issues to please reply to the email he sent us for the teleconference. I already did this and sent him what I posted a couple of times here for those of you being interviewed by the Post. I did add an opening paragraph to tie it somewhat to the receipting issues since that was the topic of the teleconference.

Couple of things about the Ombudsman I would like you to know, if you don't already. You will notice here that he does not work under the USCIS Director, which is good. It gives him some autonomy. This is his website http://www.dhs.gov/x...orial_0482.shtm and this is the link to send him recommendations:
http://www.dhs.gov/x...orial_0501.shtm

The Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman (CIS Ombudsman) provides recommendations for resolving individual and employer problems with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). As mandated by the Homeland Security Act of 2002 § 452, CISOMB is an independent DHS office that reports directly to the DHS Deputy Secretary. The CIS Ombudsman:

Assists individuals and employers in resolving problems with USCIS;
Identifies areas in which individuals and employers have problems in dealing with USCIS; and
Proposes changes to mitigate identified problems.

In closing, he said it was obvious that there would probably be a teleconference focused on USCIS :dance:exceeding their processing times. He said he just came back from Los Angeles and got an earful there and that USCIS has been breaking a lot of processing timelines.

In the beginning of the teleconference, he did give us his office phone number for I believe his secretary. It is (202) 357-8100.

So, in a nutshell, things are still very gloomy for us considering USCIS is focusing so many resources on so many other areas. As US Wendy said, we need to keep writing and keep voicing our opinions on how the service is unacceptable and negatively affecting our lives (US citizens) in so many ways. Please chime in if you were in on the call and want to further elaborate on anything I pointed out or missed. Good luck to everyone.

Well to all, especially those whose appointment won't show up online, CALL TO DOUBLE CHECK. We also had an email confrimation and confirmation number but when I called there was no record of her appointment. So if I hadn't called they would have turned her away!!
Better call to be sure

PhilippinesDouble check your interview appointment!!
Heads up to all who have an appointment through the new MNL call center scheduling system. I called 3/19 received confirmed appt for 4/22. Fiancee' received email with confirmation number.

Couple weeks later got a letter stating we're eligible for interview, thought it was an oversight. Today, the day she is heading to Manila to get her medical done a week early, I got another letter saying we're still eligible to call for interview. UH-OH. Checked the website, enetered her case number and there is no record of her appointment!!

So I called figuring I can straighten this out we have a confirmation number, right? Not so fast, I guess they throw those numbers out after giving them because they had no way to check on her confirmation number??!! And this is two hours before she is ready to travel there. After some hemming and hawing and checking, she says hmmm, well ok, I'll just make a note here that she can go to the interview. Huh?

So if I hadn't called she'd gone all the way there at great energy and expense and they would have turned her away at the gate!!

SO DOUBLE CHECK YOUR INTERVIEW DATES!!!
virgillionaireMalePhilippines2008-04-10 21:18:00
PhilippinesIV appointmen link : case not found
Just my experience but our interview date also didn't appear online, so I called the 632 301 2000 x5184 number and they had no record of the interview being scheduled even though I had a confirmation number! I had to plead to get the ok as she was about to leave for manila. It was the first day of the call in system when I scheduled though ... Also I needed to change the address too and called in the new info and also had to send a signed fax to 632-301-2591. Good luck smile.gif

Let me say I'm in the noob camp:) although I did go through this before, unfortunately. Maybe I should have listened to RJ's advice.

But all this whining, if you will, about being attacked for not having it as hard as us is misplaced. That was raised because US Wendy's original thread about writing congress was virtually shouted down claiming it was whining.

It's kind of been ####### for tat since then. And I could really give a flying wallenda about someone's negative response to me. I don't know anyone here well enough to give it that kind of weight.

That said, I do appreciate the availability of people who have been through this and have knowledge to share. And this website is probably saving me a couple grand in legal fees, so I have to thank the organizers for that.

Can't agree here. These situations are not different. Service is service. If you pay more you get more. It's how our world works. People who have it have always paid to get more...

I have to say, I find your logic baffling... service is service? so everything just gets lumped together? can I say: education is education, and object to some kids getting special one-on-one attention for learning needs, or others, a ramp put in for a wheelchair? can I say: medicine is medicine, and you with your heart attack can wait while I get my hangnail looked at, because I got here first (or can pay more)? you HAVE to look at situations separately
so whatever you say, flying first class does NOT equal paying express Amazon delivery, and does NOT equal expedited visa processing; they're completely different

as for 'how the world works' (bolding mine, above) - personally, I think the way the world works is largely #######, and I will NEVER simply accept the status quo because 'that's how it is'
money may buy more, but should it? in this situation, no, it should not; it's not just about whether you can afford more ice cream than me... as mox said: this is about people's lives, and not material rubbish

You are quite correct here, but other people who can afford it, can get a better education than someone else. The University of Oklahoma or Kansas or Wisconsin does not cost as much as Duke, MIT or Stanford. You can have the grades to get into the latter, but they still cost more, and the quality of education is probably higher. Same goes for medicene. If you can afford to see the best heart surgeon in the country, then you see him. If not, you get treated by the most competent doctor you are comfortable with.

Also, even if all people paid for expedited processing, it is similar to paying for the same service anyway, because you would be guranteed to get 60-90 day service.

I hate to be the materialistic weasel of the bunch here, but contrary to popular belief, money is what drives the world. Those with money can get preferential treatment in almost all aspects of life. Those without, like myself, do the best with what we got. And if it is something that is important to my life, I will find a way to swing it. But we shouldnt hate on the people that can afford to do it. Is it fair? Probably not, but that is the way the world works in every country on the globe.

But I do agree, USCIS should be much better than they are today, and the neccessity of using expeditied service should be much less than it is now.

yes money buys better medical care and maybe a better education (more prestige anyway) but that doesn't make it a good thing or something to be made policy. Much of the progress society has made has been aimed at remedying that, i.e., creating public education, guaranteeing treatment in emergency rooms, public defenders.
No it's not a prefect remedy but it doesn't mean that is the way we want it.

how is it invalidated? it's still the price the average citizen is paying at the pump...

I guess I'm more interested in the market price to compare apples to apples who has it worse. We hear that Europe pays so much more and think maybe it's logistics or our market weight here, etc. In some parts of the world I think that we do pay less on a market comparison, maybe we get a voloume discount heheh.

money may buy more, but should it? in this situation, no, it should not; it's not just about whether you can afford more ice cream than me... as mox said: this is about people's lives, and not material rubbish

Money is the root of all evil devil.gif

Yes, I believe a lot of the taxes goes to fund public transportation there, along with other public services.

It works for pretty well there i guess, but it kind of invalidates the price comparison as it's self inflicted

I agree.
And frankly I am a little sick of watching first class passengers skip the security line. We all pay for that security, why should they get a special line? Their money is for the seat and so they feel special.
Here in the DC area they are even building special toll roads that only well off people will be able to afford to use regularly. Is this what this country is about now? Instead of trying to fix the problems we just let the well off bypass them and screw the rabble?

I'd never do that. Instead of working on our petitions they sit back getting fat on chocolate. FORGET IT! Personally, I've always felt there should be a sliding fee for expedited service.

Well, the chocolate has already been sent. Now I'm just asking that we take advantage of it by letting our rep.s and senators know about it, and that we are fed up enough to do that.

So how would your sliding scale for an expedite work? Isn't it a little unfair to let people with money butt ahead in line?

Ok, so far the press release and other attempts to get others to circulate our Hershey's protest has not been much help.
But the purpose was to 1) let VSC know we're tired of waiting 2) get sympathy from the public, and 3) let politicians know our plight.

We might be foiled in number 2, but we accomplished the first and I have an idea on how to succeed with number 3 yet.

We can send our congressmen/women and senators the press release DIRECTLY by email. They all actually read these emails from constituents and it would be a way to follow up on our past complaints to them about the process so they know it's ongoing. The press release is at this link :

Tired of waiting for VSC to get around to your petition? Many of us plan to send a package of hershey kisses (love theme) from www.hersheygifts.com with a message that we are tired of waiting to be with our loved ones!

We are sending these the end of this week to

P Novak, adjudicators and staff
USCIS Vermont Service Center
75 Lower Welden Street
St Albans, Vermont 05479-0001

We are issuing a press release on monday to coincide with the packages arrival.

If you want to make some noise, pitch in and send a gift pack or two. good.gif

It's ok if the candy doesn't change the vsc by itself. The main idea is for the press release to get some publicity for what WE did and our situation. That can bring public and political sympathy for us which may help.

It may not work, but it seems to me to be worth a try. It certainly worked for the H1B people seeking greencards who sent flowers to USCIS director and got a deadline extended by two months!

It costs about 20 bucks to send a package, why not take a shot? We all ###### and moan about it at least this is an idea we can try to improve things good.gif

Ok, as monday is a federal holiday (must be nice), i requested the press release be done tuesday instead.

The kisses will arrive tuesday, if they are closed monday so no biggy...

Also to send a message with your order from www.hersheygifts.com you can 1) choose the chocolate kiss orders with the 'p' label and put your message on the little tag on the kiss itself - but it's limited to 30 characters apparently, and/or 2) put the message in the 'to' line at checkout where you get 45 or so characters, there is another 45 or so on the 'from' line.

I was hoping a longer message would be possible because now i can't use "ROSES ARE RED VIOLETS ARE BLUE, HURRY THE HELL UP!" whistling.gif

Shortly after they sent flowers the 'deadline' for filing got extended from june to august. Personally, I think this is one of the items that caused the delays at VSC, which started around june.
Some people think that they also threatened legal action which may have helped.

Hi Y'all. I am new to this wonderful website. Like many of you, I am a mid June filer with blink.gif no touches of note (one touch early on at the end of June). I share your sentiments about how messed up the system is and I feel the roller coaster taking me lower and lower every day. Sara, my fiance', is stressing about this heavily and this forced separation is weighing on us greatly. Our relationship is wonderful and we will weather this storm but this is one we should never have to endure.

There are a few things I'd like to share -

-My lawyer's paralegal finally broke down after much prodding early this week and called the VSC (oh yes, "Service" is our middle name!!!!). She was told that they were currently processing applications dated May 19th and that they are averaging one day's filings per day. My response to the paralegal was that the VsC person was being "less than genuine" with her due to the fact that petitions are being handled totally out of order. Her response: wacko.gif

-My congresswoman sent in a letter on my behalf early in November (3 weeks after her staffer promised me that she would). Yesterday, I asked her staffer to inquire again as nothing at all had happened. She said that they now must wait until the end of December to call due to "Congressional protocals". That sounds bogus to me.

-On Wednesday, I wrote both Senators and I have not yet heard anything from them. They will certainly be getting calls on Monday a.m.

As my peition is rapidly approaching the 180 day mark, I am wondering what effect if any will my calling the VsC on the 180th day? Do any of you have experience with this? If so, will it do me any good or will I just get told to call back in 30 days?

Last, I just want to say that I am very impressed with the great support that all of you have provided to eachother. Just reading posts the last few days has been inspiring.

Hi I am Lora......Oscar and I filed June 5 and have heard nothing also.....I have done everything you have and have gotten the same lying response.......Today is my 180th day.....I am calling them on Monday......of course the customer service people get to be with there loved ones on the weekends unlike all of us.......This has been very stressful on Oscar and I also but I have to believe that through all of this we will be stronger as a couple because our love has been tested like this.......you can see also in this thread that we have sent chocolate and press releases and questions to TV stations....I even am waiting for a Congressional liason to get back with me about hearings....I have contacted Senators and Congressman.......an I do not take bullcrap from them.....I vote and I remind them of that fact when I speak to them...they work for me....they are not doing me a favor here........It is there job to work for us.....I am really thinking about going to Washington tomorrow....I live very close and walk into the Department of Homeland Security and talk to anyone who will listen to me....even the guard.....with information from this website.......they are inept, uncaring and it is unreal that this has been allowed to go on like this.....that federal agency is this customer unfriendly......so Yes my friend I feel your pain....I feel your frustration.......and my suggestion is to become a pain in there butt......You are there customer......How much worse can it get????......I wish I had waited and filed in July....Lora

Hey,

Just my advice from my perspective but I was only kidding a little about the taser thing on the June waiters thread. I think it's a bad idea to go there and when they start patronizing you it could get ugly because you're fed up already. The 'authorities' don't have restraint or couth these days.

Try to make an appointment with someone. At least don't go alone. They found your file and said the supervisor will work it right? What are the odds they are dumb enough to lose it again? whistling.gif
