Middle East and North AfricaIntroduction
Salaam wa alaykum! We are so happy to have another friend! We all have our crazy chaotic stories, and it sure is a relief to know we are not alone in this! Things for us too are going alright- the pace seems SLOW, but we are treadding along alright I think! Waiting for certificates, and biographics so NVC can start processing here in the states-- they say 4-6 weeks once they receive the rest of our paperwork--GOSH I HOPE NOT! It would be super cool to get him here in December, or by the VERT latest EARLY Jan-but doesn't look promising sad.gif we'll see what comes of it I guess. Keep the prayers flowing for all your VJers and We'll keep sending 'em your way! Talk with you soon!--

My husband hasn't come here yet, but when he first arrived in Jordan there was a funny experience. He went to Hardees and asked them if they had burgers, lol. They looked at him like he was crazy and said that is the main thing they serve. My husband didn't want to look silly so then he said that he meant what is the good burger to order there. Anyway, it wasn't his fault that he had never seen a hardees before or knew what they serve, but I still find the story funny. Asking if there are any hamburgers at Hardees, lol.

Tell me about your husband in Jordan??? Is he there as part of the "assylum" - I wondered when I saw signs outside the embassy my first trip there this summer??? I am interested to know why it is taking them so long to process you in this case....sorry maybe this is too personal for this thread- message me if you don't mind sharing on a more private scale I just don't get it all..

Actually I really like that part. Knowing that I am his and he is mine... I remember on my wedding day at the Court House in Alexandria. I was nervous and excited and had to go potty. The womens restroom there was closed down and I HAD to go! My sister in law guarded the mens restroom for me. It was soooooo gross in there and NO toliet paper. I used a kleenex that she had to ask someone for. Plus, that was my VERY FIRST experience with the bidett. STRANGE stuff! laughing.gif rofl.gif

LOL!!! Yeah- I can imagine... I was wise my first trip to Jordan... I remembered to bring my moist towelettes!!! I had a box of tissues in my purse the second time around! -- They BOTH came in handy for myself, hubby and brother-in-law on our trip to Egypt during my second go-round! Lets face it girls... the "restrooms" we have come to know all our lives will be forever intruded upon--LOL! Our minds will never be as clean as they were before-the nasty toiletts!!! Well, in this topic it does no good to let Platy ruin it for you, you know.
I was just thinking about the time I was dying to go to the restroom and was going to the Cairo Airport. When we finally found the restroom outside of the airport, there was an older lady outside the "restroom hole" with the roll of toliet paper. I asked for toliet paper and she literally gave me ONE Square. I needed more than ONE Square. I paid her a pound and asked for more toliet paper and she gave me another square. Finally I paid 5pounds and grabbed the roll of paper, only to find out that when I got into the restroom hole, there was NO TOLIET, just literally a room with a hole in the ground. - That was not a good time!

HA HA HA!!! Try using the "restroom" in the subway system! YIKES!!! Oh my gosh! I thought my kidneys were gonna explode by the time we found the "hole in the floor" in the hole in the ground(hmmmm) and the roaches and the pooo! YUCK!!! My hubby stood outside the door while I was going, to protect me from anyone that may have gone in while I was there- then gave me a stunned look when I left w/o washing my hands!--I had liquid hand sanitizer in my bag, figured it was cleaner than the faucet and or water in that "nightmare!"- come to find out-- I think it was the mens room I was being protected in, but does that really matter?!lol

LOL Really tho, I added the local number rebtel gave me to my circle, and so the call only costs me the 11 or 12 cent/ minute international connection!!! It has saved me a bundle! I would be interested in the whole jack thing, but my hubby doesn't have a computer that is connected to the internet, and so it wouldn't do much good unless I expect him to run to the netcafe every time I wanna talk to him on the phone! Its easier with rebtel. We then limit our calls to about 1/2 hr and it works out just fine--best of all-- they take paypal!YAY!

Adam uses Rebtel too. They charge $10.30 for I forgot how many minutes. I want to find out about what Linda was saying about sending a phone service to them. We need something CHEAP! Phone bills are too expensive these days

Just adding my 10cents-lol- sorry couldn't help myself! I am not sure what you'd have to payoff the customs to Jordan!?! They make interesting decisions on how much they want for a care package to my husband and family there!?!?!?!?! Sometimes!!! In any case- good luck!

Middle East and North AfricaMahr - What Determines Worth?
QUOTE (rahma @ Nov 18 2008, 08:37 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
In case anyone actually cares and isn't just looking to stir ####:

In most schools of thought (ie codified methods to interpret islam), there are several different sources from which a ruling is drawn. One of these is urf, culture. While mahr, dowry, is spoken about in the Qur'an, and we see that the companions of the Prophet (saws) all gave mahr, exactly what a man gives today is dependant upon the culture of himself and his wife. In Egypt, a man will have to purchase a fully furnished apartment. In Iraq, it's a certain amount of gold. In the US, a woman may ask for cash, a house, a car, a college education, a hajj trip, or any number of things.

Marriage without a dowry: Is it valid?
QUOTE
It should be noted that Islam does not stipulate a minimum or a maximum amount of dowry that must be paid. It is left to the traditions and customs of each territory, but the groom has to pay something to the bride regardless of the amount.

In your case, if you gathered to conclude the marriage contract and you did not mention the dowry, then your marriage is valid, but you need to pay your wife a dowry that is equal to her peers'.

Stipulations regarding mahr in the hanafi madhab

QUOTE
Therefore, if you did not fix or stipulate an amount as dowry (mahr) when marrying, then if you have consummated your marriage (which I'm sure you have, for you state being married for two years), you will be required to pay an amount which is typically received as dowry by similar brides (mahr al-mithl). Now, mahr al-mithl is that which is customarily received as dowry by brides from the wife's father's side, such as her sisters, paternal aunties, paternal auntie's daughters, etc. Her mother and maternal aunties will not be taken into consideration unless they are from her father's family. If no woman similar to her is found on her father's side, then one will look at other non-related women.

Excessive amounts of dowry

QUOTE
"Give them (women) their dowers." (Surah al-Nisa, 24)

The minimum amount for dowry is ten Dirhams (30.618 grams of silver) and there is no maximum limit. Thus, the bride and groom may mutually agree upon whatever sum they desire. However, it is wrong and disliked to fix a large sum as dowry, especially when the groom is not financially capable of paying the amount.

Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do not stipulate excessive amounts as dowry for women. If (doing so) was a token of honour in this world or a source of piety by Allah, then the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) would have been more worthy of it than you?." (Sunan Tirmidhi, no 1114)

Honestly- I had no idea about the dowry bit??? Needless to say I was terribly surprised when the court clerk asked how much I was asking?! I hadn't gone to get a dowry, or give one--- I just wanted a husband! Very interesting---

Well everyone we did it good.gif After that dark period around my husbands first two interviews and than both of our depressions and uncertainty (for anyone who did not witness it) and than our frantic desperate actions to avoid his petition being sent back to USCIS...he was called to return to the consulate and was again interviewed by the consulat chief himself. There were alot of questions again and a much happier sort of interview (the chief has a much sweeter personality from the first lady interviewer!) the chief even mentioned to my husband that he had talked to his wife on the phone tongue.gif . My husband said "darling he knew you! " what a persistent wife I am LOL. Than he told my husband he could pick up his visa and passport in the next day and as of this morning he has it in his hand. I wanted to wait until he actually has it to tell you all so as not to "jinx" our luck. My husband wanted me to put our pictures on here so that people would see us together since we had both talked on here and he felt so many of you were so nice and helped me and us thru some bad times so you should see who are. We both concider you all friends and will never forget you. We also want to stay present here time to time to help other people with encouragement when they need it. We are not sure exactly the date he will come yet but I am thinking by the next week. So after ward we might be mia while we settle in but will check back time to time and keep in touch. Middle East and North AfricaIs it necessary to have a wedding party?
The more pictures you take the more proof of a relationship you have. My inlaws threw my wedding party two days after we were married, because that was a the first Thursday night after we were married and we wanted all of his family that could to be there! We took thousands of photos!!! But I only submitted probalby 15 to them USCIS for review of our case... He is taking more with him from my more recent visit and the originals of what they already have... so that they can see that there is still a loving relationship and the more you have with his family and your family and all of you together the better they like it... My family was of course clueless back in the states-- my fault--I thought no one would accept the idea, BOY was I wrong. They all really just want me to be happy, and if its with a MENA guy-- so be it! No one knew when I left that I was getting married, and I thought everyone was still kinda upset about it all...but my friends here just threw me a bridal shower--it was such a surprise, and so much fun!!! When hubby gets here, we will have an additional wedding party-- reception-- just so everyone can have the chance to meet him, and he doesn't have to go door to door to say hello to everyone!

Point is the government just wants proof that you love one another and that your families are happy with your decision to marry! We also had friends on his side and mine write letters stating that they believe we married for love and not any other reason but to make one another unbelievably happy for the rest of our lives! -- Its fun to look at those letters now and smile== to know even though everything wasn't known when I left for Jordan that first time, EVERYONE was so willing to share what they did know to show their support of the marriage!==-In any case, good luck and have a GREAT wedding! heart.gif goofy.gif dancin5hr.gif energy.gif kicking.gif

Its easier to walk when I am at work because I have an evil cat who is determined to kill me on the stairs. I am convinced of it though I told her she is not on my life insurance policy, lol.

ha ha! too funny- my pomeranian is the same way! -- You'd think she couldn't see me coming a lot of the time! Pets are NUTS!

I wish I could say my cat doesn't see me coming, but she actually races ahead of me when I go up or down the stairs and then she stops in the middle of them and sprawls out so I have to skip a step. She usually does this just as I'm going to put my foot on that step and then has the nerve to meow angrily if I accidentally brush her with my feet (I don't even actually step on her). Sometimes to avoid this I just pick her up and carry her so she can't get in my way, lol.

Well, thats the key-- she just wants some lovin from momma! Pets can be so needy! but they are soooo much fun! The dog just moves sooo fast, that there is no chance of me ever acutally stepping on her, but she's so small, I don't want to chance sqwishing her, so I am always overly careful I suppose, but no sqwished doggies around here for me! lol. pets....

I would insist that if it's an issue of what other people would think if they saw you, then he should not smoke in public either. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Him being able to smoke but you not being allowed to is just not fair, and I wouldn't put up with that!

But smoking is bad for you anyway. laughing.gif

I TOTALLY AGREE JEN! I THINK WHAT HE'S FORGETTING IS THIS IS AMERICA, AND YOU HAVE AS MUCH OF A RIGHT TO SMOKE AS HE DOES... THOUGH I WISH YOU WOULDN'T ITS SOOOOO BAD FOR YOU!!!

I was fortunate enough to marry a man that doesn't smoke or drink, or like tatoos or motorcycles... the list just goes on and on and on.... Crazy to think but for me he REALLY is the perfect man!

Catch ya all soon!-Amy

Mabrooooooookkkkk! This is wonderful news! I am very happy for you! We unfortunately didn't make a Jan interview at Amman, but are still hopeful for Feb! Gotta keep our heads up, but it still SUCKS to be away from my sweetie this time of year! Feeling sad and lonely without him close by unsure.gif

It is GREAT for you when will he be joining you then?! Soon I would assume, or are you on AP like Jax? Guess I need to be asking for permission to sit next to her on the "stand by" couch! as the interview couch is pretty full so it would seem! lol

I wish you nothing but the best! How wonderful to be reunited! Take care and keep us all informed!--- I know I don't say much most of the time, but I have enjoyed reading thru the threads and keepingup with all the gals here in MENA! ANd Guys too... holy cow! I'd be gettin' a motel room or SOMETHING!!! maybe even a large dog to lay beside me...or a herd of cats!!!((hey they're always very warm)) You take care of urself! You are always welcome to come on down to hot n humid texass and stay with me if u need to.

Fortunately we had my "other mom" who took us in that night, and the land lord got the furnace running again!!! The pipes are no longer freezing, but its still mighty cold out there! I'd LOVE to take a trip to hot and humid Texas! Course that might cause some waves in the Hoover Dam(or at least near there) My sister is in Phoenix, and so is miss Mel from MENA--my first contact! So maybe next time I take a trip, we'll circle back thru TX and see how msss Amal is doing!--Wish it could be soon, but I just started a new job girlie! LOVIN IT! Talk to ya later!-Amy

I'll just have to be patient then lol..*taps foot* *looks at watch*.... lol smile.gif
