ThailandCan't send money to Thailand via Western Union Online

I was able to open a Bangkok Bank account yesterday with no problems at all.  However, another VJ member was told no way at a different branch.

They're supposed to send me an email with the login info for Ibanking and they're sending the login PIN to my mother in law's address.    Next I  setup the Bangkok Bank NY routing number and account on my wife's gmail (google wallet) account.  Waiting for the test ACH to go through.  If/when this happens, I should be able to send money with no fees from my google wallet account to my Bangkok Bank account via ACH and not have to bend over and take it from BoA every time I want to do so.

I figured I'd update this thread.  I've sent money multiple times through the Bangkok Bank NYC branch with no issues.  (It helps if you actually enter the person's name where it asks for it)

The problem I have is that is an ACH transfer which with most banks is free.  Not with BoA.  They want $25 for same day ACH, $10 for 2 days, and $3 for 3 days.  That's B.S. in my book.  So I'm in the process of trying another angle using Google Wallet.  I have a google wallet account, and I setup another google wallet account using my wife's gmail.  I set the bank account to be my niece's Account with the Bangkok Bank US routing number and the account number in Thailand on my wife's google wallet.  Google sends a test deposit and you have to go back and tell them the amount to verify the account.  I'm waiting to see if this shows up in my nieces account.  If it does, then we are good to go.  We can make free transfers to Bangkok Bank.  My reasoning for messing with all this, is I'm going to be opening an account in Bangkok when I go there for Songkran in a couple weeks, and I'd like to be able to move money to that account for free from the U.S.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Ok I tried it again and actually entered the person's name instead of just "Bangkok Bank"  Hopefully it goes better this time.

So it appears the issue was somewhere between the chair and the keyboard on my end.  I entered the recipient as "Bangkok Bank" and not my my wife's mother's name.  Thankfully Bangkok Bank didn't say "Thanks for the donation" and keep it.  They rejected it and sent it back.  Of course BoA kept my $3.  Not that I blame them.  I'll make a second attempt at this tonight when I get home.

Update.  I looked at my U.S. BoA account this morning, and the $100 was back in there.  I called BoA and they said the Bangkok Bank office in NY rejected it.  I called the person at NY Bangkok Bank that sends the money to Thailand, and she says that she never got it from the person there at the Bangkok Bank Branch in New York that that sends it to her.  Peter (212)329-9240 is that person and he doesn't get in until after 10:00 am.

Just an FYI for everyone.  I'll come back and let everyone know what Peter had to say about it.

Do you set this up like a bill pay or something different?

I went down that road first.  But that wasn't it.  It's not obvious on the BoA website, probably for a reason.  I went to transfers and then To/From other banks vs. To/from other people.  And then went from there.  The to/from other people is where they ding you the $35.  The to/from other banks is where it was only $3.  I sent $100 Friday just to test if it works right or not.  I'll come back tomorrow and post the results.

Yes if you do a wire transfer it still has that fee - you need to just add it as an account, usually you can add an account online... Or ask them to do an "ACH (Automated Clearing House) Transfer"

Damn.  I had it setup wrong on the BoA side.  I set it up right, and now the fee is $3 vs. $35.  For the $3 fee it takes 3 days, but who cares.  Kicking myself in the a$$.  Ohh well, at least I know now.

Thanks alot for posting this.  You saved me alot of future cash.

Yes - that's why I said to use Bangkok Bank and ACH to their New York branch - which is a DOMESTIC transfer just like from say Wells Fargo to Bank of America.  It's free and you can do it online usually, and Bangkok Bank charges you a rather small fee (I forget how much but not bad) to move it from the New York branch to the Thailand bank account.

I must have done it wrong, because I did the exact same thing.  I sent it to the Bangkok Bank ABA number in the U.S.  BoA still charged me $35.

if you want to save western union fees, have whoever you send money to open a bangkok bank account - then you can transfer via ACH to the Bangkok Bank US branch

Isn't the wire transfer a $35.00 fee?  Because they have Bangkok Bank and last time I did that, Bank of America dinged me $35 for the wire transfer fee.

I created a second account in my checking and sent over just a Debit card to my family there. They can remove money when we say so with what we put it. Works wonders smile.png

I did that when my wife was still there.  I need to think about if I should do that with her family.

I stopped using WU years ago.

There was some talk a while back about an issue between the US and Thailand because they would not put anti money laundering procedures into place. Perhaps this is carry over from that. Complete guess of course.

Bingo.  That's what the lady on the phone at Western Union said.  Some issue with the Thai government.  Odd thing is, I was still able to do it over the phone though.

I wonder what economic impact this will have on the bar girls?

ThailandDocuments after NOA 2

Thanks for the heads up about her birth certificate. We have her original, but it's so old and falling apart. I hope it'll be okay.

Are there any special forms for the police cert? I think that's a good idea, to wait until we get the NOA 2. Also, I have a feeling she'll have to get all the vaccinations again. I don't envy her!

No special forms for the police report.  she'll need a couple passport style photos.  Just show them NOA2 or the letter from the embassy for packet 3 to get the police report.  As far as the vaccinations, I believe some of them are actually a series.  Meaning get one now, and then another follow up in 6 months etc.  She'll be fine just getting the first one.  My wife had to get 4 I believe since she didn't have any records either.

ETA: if it's not too much trouble for her to get another birth certificate, you might have her do that.  You may need it for other things not related to immigration.  Also go ahead and get an English translation of it while she's there.  Much cheaper to get it done in Thailand than in the U.S.

ThailandDocuments after NOA 2

Hi,

My fiancée and I still haven't received our NOA 2, but we want to start gathering documents in advance. I currently have all the documents needed for my I-134. What I can't seem to find out is what documents my fiancée need to collect? I know of vaccination records, police background check, and original birth certificate. Is there anything else?

Also, regarding the police background check, can she get that done now? How many months/years does it need to show? We've read it takes 2 weeks to process, so we'd rather do it early if possible.

Lastly, is my fiancée the only one who has no idea what vaccinations she's had? If she can't find the records, does this mean she'll have to get all of them done again plus other require vaccinations for the US?

Thanks in advance.

-Jake

Both the medical and police certificate have expiration dates.  6 months for both I believe.  So you don't want to get them done too early.

One thing I would focus on is the birth certificate.  Those can be sketchy in Thailand, or not exist at all.  Especially if she was born outside of Bangkok.  You need to be careful about this because the embassy will accept just about anything as proof of birth, however when you go to adjust status in the U.S., USCIS has much stricter guidelines.  Many here have gotten burned by that.

I never noticed the .25% as I have always moved large sums.    The TT rate on the 29th at BB was 32.14.   If you go to the website you can choose the day and it will show you what their rate was.

Well it's .25% if the fee is between 200 THB and 500THB.  Otherwise it's 200 THB at the minimum end or 500 THB at the maximum end.

KareeMaleThailand2014-05-01 15:44:00
ThailandBanking and Transferring funds to Thailand

So the exchange rate was about 32.14 then.  Looking at Oanda, the rate on the 25th (I'm guessing this was the date) was 32.30.  That's definitely a better rate than what I get from Citi.

It posted to my BKK account on the 29th.  Oanda shows 32.2 on the 29th.  So looks like BKK Bank is pretty good with the exchange rate, but they get you on the inbound 200 THB fee.  The .25% is not a big deal, it's the minimum 200 THB.  So seems like transferring large amounts at once makes sense.

So seems like I should send a large amount to my BKK Bank account next time I do a transfer.

Hrm, I just checked with my fiancee on the three transfers that I've done since December, all of them had a 200 baht charge on the recipients end.  This was Citi -> BKK Bank

Bingo.  Just called them and they said it's a .25% fee.  Minimum 200 baht, maximum 500 baht.

Is there a fee on the receivers end?  Maybe a 150 baht fee like what happens with ATMs?

Bangkok Bank is pretty good about listing all the fees when you login to your account, and I don't see a fee.  I'm going to call them tonight and find out the deal.

That exchange rate is worse than what you'd get through WU.

Yeah that's a good point.  I'll call them tonight and find out the amount they received in USD, and if it was $50 ask them what was the exchange rate when the transfer was made.  Something does seem fishy.

I am going to guess it has something to do with Google Wallet.   If you used a debit card or credit card to fund your GW account they tack on a 2.9% fee.   We have the same issues with Paypal and different currency.

The Daily BB rate has been no where near 28.14 in the past week, so there is some other fee being tacked on by GW.   I have always gotten close to the exact rate posted on the website.

I fund the Google Wallet account using ACH and not a credit card.  I've sent money to other folks and also had them send money to me.  I've never seen them take a penny when done via ACH.  Like you said though, if you do use a credit card to fund the account, I think they charge 2.9%, because that's what the credit card companies charge.

When I use Bangkok Banks online FX tool, it comes out to 1594.50, so seems someone took 187 THB somewhere along the way.  Comes out to about 10-11%.  I'll be curious if it still comes out to 10% when I transfer a larger amount

The $50 I sent using Google Wallet just showed up in my Bangkok Bank account as 1407 THB.   Looks like it took roughly 3 business days.  The exchange rate looks to be 28.14.  Not so good, although there was no transfer fee.

I think I am going to get a charles schwab debit account and send the card to TH for free instant ATM withdrawl. The TT rates it pays are higher than bank rates, you basicly lose nothing. I can fill the debit account from my CC using amazon pay (1,000 free per month) and get 2% rewards on top.

That should work fine if you're just sending money to one person.  I have to pay for my niece's school and occasionally send her spending money.  Also, the MIL asks for a few bucks now and then.  So I have to send cash to multiple people.

Also, as stated above if you ever want to get a Non-O visa, the bank account will be there ready to go with the funds.

So I sent my mother in law 100 baht as test transfer.  They sent her a text message. For some reason she took this to mean that she only had 100 baht left in her account and didn't sleep the whole night.  My wife straightened that out.

Also, on the way out of town I slipped her dad 2000 baht.  Apparently the entire village got smashed on Lao Khao thanks to my 2k.  The father and all his friends got hauled in front of the Poo Yai Baan for stealing a chicken.  One guy ended up in the hospital after his wife kicked his a$$ for being so wasted.

I'm definitely reconsidering building a house in that village.

ALSO remember you can only transfer INTO Thailand, you cannot transfer back out.

I'm glad I checked with the bank concerning this before I left Saturday.  For this reason I took most of my money out and brought it back to the U.S.  I'll put it back 90 days prior to applying for a Non-O.

One of the primary reasons to have the bank account in your own name is if you ever plan on doing an extension of stay based on marriage and you want to qualify based on having money in the bank vs having income.    They require that the account with the 400K be in your own account, NOT a joint account.   Yes this is completely stupid because the money is suppose to be used as living expenses for the family.

Good point.  I think it has to be in there for 90 days as well.

Thanks for putting this together. I am not sure if subsequent iBanking transfers get a sms passcode or only the first one to each account, I think the latter. Inter bank transfers are not free but cost 15 baht to send. Not sure if the exchange rate is very good; we send on a three-day free transfer from Citibank and the exchange rate never seems to be as much as I thought it should be. If you are linking to a u.s. bank and they send two test deposits you will need to back out the dollar amounts from the baht amounts - unless you luck out use a spreadsheet.

Steve

More than likely that's Citibank screwing you on the exchange rate.  I've always found the Thai bank exchange rates to be pretty fair.

As far as the 15 baht, that's more than likely an inter-provincial transfer fee.  I forgot to include that little tidbit in my post.  If I open a bank account in Bangkok at Bangkok Bank and then use a Bangkok Bank ATM in another province to withdraw money, they ding me 15 baht.  If I withdraw the money at a Bangkok Bank ATM in Bangkok it's free.  Also, I had someone deposit 362,000 THB into my mother in law's account at a Bangkok Bank in Isaan.  I then withdrew this money at the same branch in Isaan in deposited into my account.  The charged me roughly 300 baht for this. Later that afternoon I transferred 150k to someone else's Bangkok Bank account to pay for some land I was dinged another roughly 150 Baht for the privilege.

Concerning the test deposits, I had to call Bangkok Bank in Thailand and they actually told me what the exact U.S. dollar amounts were over the phone since it only shows up in THB online.

Just curious, why go to the trouble of setting up your own account in Thailand. Why not just have your wife set one up?

Because she's Thai, and I don't trust Thai people.

Edit:

Ok maybe that's a little harsh. Let me give you a scenario.

I transfer 10k baht into my wife's Thai bank account.  3 days later it's gone because she fell for every sob story from every relative over there and now she needs to send her mom money for something legitimate?  Do I tell her no, I'm not doing that because you blew the first 10k?

You married a Thai, so trust me you're going to fight this battle until one of you is dead or you're divorced.  Mostly because of her family, not because of her.

ThailandBanking and Transferring funds to Thailand

I just got back from Thailand and wanted to start a thread about what's needed to open a bank account and transfer money to Thailand using Google Wallet.

Bank Account.

You'll want to open a bank account at Bangkok Bank for the simple reason that they are the only Thai bank that I'm aware of that has a U.S. branch where you can send ACH transfers from other U.S. bank accounts.

I opened a bank account at the Emporium Bangkok Bank branch without an issue holding a 30 day stamp in my passport.  Another VJ member tried the same thing at another Bangkok Bank branch and was rejected because he didn't have a work permit.  I was told the same thing back in 2004 when I tried to open a Bangkok Bank account at the Silom branch.  So it seems to be important that anyone wanting to open a Bangkok Bank account, do so at the Emporium Branch.  They gave me an ATM card that also acts as a debit card.  They were out of the standard ATM cards at that branch when I opened the account.  This is good and bad.  The good thing is that you can use it as a visa card anywhere in the world.  The bad thing, and this is a big one, is that you can only withdraw money at Bangkok Bank ATMs.  It WILL NOT WORK at Kasikorn or any other Thai banks ATMs.  I went back on Saturday to get a standard ATM card and they were still out of them.  For this reason I withdrew most of my money and took it back to the U.S.

When you open the account you'll want to sign up for iBanking (Bualuang Banking.)  This is online banking.  You'll need a Thai address to do this.  They send you you're username via SMS to the phone number provided, and they send the username to the Thai address you provided.  I used my wife's parents address in Si Saket.  I opened the account on Saturday, April 12, and the username didn't show up until  Thursday, April 24.  This took awhile for two reasons.  1. They live in Bumf*ck Isaan, and 2. Songkran was April 13-15 so that probably set the mail back.

Also, when you open this account in Bangkok, if you use the ATM card at a Bangkok Bank ATM outside of Bangkok, they ding you 15 Baht for every ATM withdrawal.  Also, if you do anything like deposit money at a Bangkok Bank outside of the region where you opened the account they ding you as well for a percentage.  It's a weird thing, but like many things in Thailand, that's how it is and probably wont change anytime soon.

Online Banking.

They seem to think that mobile phone banking is more secure than regular PC based internet banking for some reason.  Because of this, anytime you add transfer recipients online, or want to transfer money online they ALWAYS send a SMS with a PIN to complete the transfer.  This can be a problem if you're in the U.S.  However I just tested the SMS roaming, and I'm able to receive SMS messages on my phone using an AIS 1-2-call prepaid SIM on my phone here in the U.S.  You can topup your AIS 1-2 call from the U.S. using a credit card here:

https://aiseservice....th/eServiceWeb/

You can also use this to topup other peoples phones in Thailand if you feel the need.  This website gave me problems using a U.S. credit card but it worked using my Bangkok Bank debit card.

Also, they have a thing called "Term Hai Na" wher you can send money from your phone to topup another phone.  Here is the info on that:

http://www.ais.co.th...ey-service.html

The reason that the above are important is that if you don't use your prepaid number for a certain amount of time, they disconnect it, and this will lead to all kinds of issues with the Ibanking etc.  So you want to occasionally put 20 or 50 baht on the phone whether you do it via credit card or via a friend.  I've also seen people selling the scratch cards online in the U.S. but they seemed really expensive.

Now that you have the Bangkok Bank account all setup, you might want to send money to it from the U.S.  This is good because you can transfer money to other Thai bank accounts online.  If you have a Thai spouse, you're going to be sending money back to the family in Thailand on occasion.   I've figured out how to do this completely free using google wallet.  You'll need to google accounts.

On the first account, link it to your U.S. bank account.  Google will send a test deposit and after a couple days it will show up in your U.S. bank account and you go back and verify the test amounts that Google deposited.  Once you do that, you can send money to and from that account pretty easily for free.

The second account is a little trickier.  You'll use the ACH number for Bangkok Bank in New York (026008691) and your Bangkok Bank account number.  It also asks for the name on the Bangkok Bank Account.  Make SURE you set this up exactly the same as the name on the Bangkok Bank account.  The Thai banks like to use the full name including middle name. For example if your name is John Michael Smith, that's how you need to to send the money.  Not John Smith.  Anyway, Google will do the same thing with the test deposits.  However, these will show up in your Bangkok Bank account in Thai Baht.  You'll just need to call Bangkok Bank and ask them for the U.S. amount so you can enter it in Google Wallet to verify the account.

I sent $50 using this method last Thursday to my Bangkok Bank account and it still hasn't shown up online in Thailand yet, but I suspect it will tomorrow (Monday)

I know all this seems somewhat complicated, and it is, but once you setup it up the first time, you can then fund your own account in Thailand and distribute money at will by simply sending an email from one Gmail account to the another and attaching money to the email.  You can pay Thai bills online etc.

I want to give special thanks to AaronLV.  He pointed me in the right direction as far as topping up AIS phones online.

I didn't realize Chiang Mai was an international terminal.  I'll need to look into that.

Interesting.  I just got an AA credit card where the give you 30k  50k miles for signing up and spending $3k in the next 3 months.  That will put me right at the 80k needed for a R/T ticket to Thailand.  My wife is on the flight from Seoul to DFW right now and that puts us together over 80k on Korean  Looks like I can fly Cathay to Hong Kong next time on American (60 year old useless flight attendants) and just hop a cheap airline flight to Chiang Mai from there.  Don't have to deal with swampy and Bangkok going that route either.  So free plane tickets for both of us on the next trip.  Now the trick is convincing her that the only way it'll be free is if I go alone a day before her.

Here's everyone that serves Chiang Mai.

So I logged in and my family plan was approved.  They said they would send me an email when approved, but they didn't.  I logged into both my wife's account and my account and enabled pooling for both accounts.  I then tried to book a ticket that I did not have enough miles on my own to book.  It allowed me to book the ticket using miles.  (I went all the way to the confirmation page and didn't click confirm)  So looks like it works.

Pretty damn awesome!

Something else to add.  Pretty much as soon as we got back, my wife had to turn around and fly back to Thailand for a funeral.  I was able to get a ticket for $1900 with 24 hours advance notice.

ThailandKorean Air

I wanted to post a couple things concerning Korean Air's frequent flier program that I thought were pretty good.

1.  The miles don't expire for 10 years, unlike U.S. based airline miles that expire after 18 months without any use.  One caveat is the Korean miles expire at the end of 10 years period whether you fly with them during that period or not.  So I guess that's good and bad.

2.  I was messing around on the Korean Air website and found this thing called "Family Plan"  I dug into this further and you can pool your miles together.  For example, I have roughly 40k miles and my wife has roughly 40k miles.  A round trip ticket to Thailand from the U.S. is 80k miles.  After you register for this family plan thing, you can combine the miles and redeem them for one ticket.  No U.S. airline that I'm aware of will let you combine miles from different accounts.  It appears they let kids grandparents etc. all pool their miles together as well.  I did have to upload proof of marriage.  I pinged them on chat, and they said they will let me know via email when approved.

ThailandThai TV in the states

Well, with Aseaniptv/Malimar, the Lakorn and Thai Channels (3/5/7, etc) are no problem.  It's really more about movies that we both can enjoy together.  I honestly can't be bothered with the Thai voice overlays with English subs.  I have no issues sourcing movies with Thai audio, but the pickings for Thai audio/English subs and vice versa seem to be rather thin.

I really went out of my way to try and get movies that had Thai subtitles, looking into Thai FTA satellite, etc. etc.  At the end of the day, she really didn't care about any of it.  Someone turned her on to the youtube Thai soap opera thing, and that what she watches almost all of the time now.  It keeps her busy so I can focus on my animal porn without being bothered.

Is there is any other way to get Thai TV or English with Thai subs/vice-versa in the states (e.g. HBO Asia)?  Is there anything available over FTA (free-to-air)?  I have directv at the moment and a Roku with Malimar TV, but I'd really like a better option than going to the local store or streaming movies?

There's not really a large selection on Amazon instant video or Netflix and I doubt redbox has anything.

I went down that road when my wife first got here.  She really didn't care about it like I thought she would.  She mostly watches Thai movies and Soaps on Youtube now.

ThailandMilitary Coup Announced - May 22, 2014

With John Kerry saying he is "disappointed" and that the U.S. is going to take a look at the $10 million the U.S. gives Thailand, Thailand should say piss off. I agree with Karee that the U.S. should stay out of this, our Western model of democracy is not a one size fits all. And, as Kerry probably doesn't know, now is not a good time to be alienating any ASEAN countries.

$10 million?  That's Chalerm's annual bar tab.
