My wife's plants were one of the main reasons we rented a van and drove from Edmonton to Vancouver. I thought she was nuts, but it made her happy.

Get her another houseplant with a note that says, sorry I couldn't drive you to the airport. That'd make me happy. good.gif

Holy #######. That's a great idea!

Now I just need to find a good plant. Wait a sec... I don't know $hit about plants! helpsmilie.gif

What's a good, easy-to-care for plant that won't break the bank? We're a little tight on money right now.

I really dislike American cars. If there's one thing the U.S. sucks at, it's making a good automobile.

Don't get me wrong -- most American cars have some awesome features. Unfortunately, they tent to drive like $hit. Last time I checked, it's more important for the car to drive well than have OnStar or video screens in the back seat.

The only American cars I've ever liked are the Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Viper, both of which are very expensive. It almost seems like all American automotive skills went into those two cars and the rest got whatever was left over.

I prefer German or Japanese vehicles. German cars tend to be very expensive (trust me, I know!) but are incredible cars. Unless you're purchasing a Lexus, Japanese cars usually cost less. Oddly enough, Japanese cars seem to have fewer mechanical and electronic issues than German cars.

As a side note, my grandfather refuses to buy a German car, but he has no problem getting a Japanese car. My grandfather fought in Europe during WWII, but never went to the Pacific. That's probably why. We're also Jewish, so maybe that pesky Nazi ordeal made him a little biased. tongue.gif

My Mazda and sister's Honda are great cars and have lasted well through the years will little problems. My husband has a Toyota and it's great as well. I'll always buy foreign from now on

I've lived my entire life in Canada, but yes...I can't deny that a large part of why I'm moving down to be with my wife (as opposed to her moving up here to be with me) is because of all the differences in America. There are downsides as well, of course, but things tend to be cheaper, faster and more accessible in the States. Whenever my wife is up here and we go shopping for...well...virtually anything, she comments on how expensive things are. And whenever I visit her, I see exactly what she means!

When I first moved to BC from Seattle (not a huge difference), I was shocked at how expensive everything was here. I used to be able to eat decently on $100 a month (chicken, rice, pasta, salad).

I notice the gas prices the most. Granted, I came from Texas (which generally has the cheapest gas in the U.S.), but it regularly costs me over $20 more to fill my tank up. I don't drive a big gas-guzzling SUV, either!

But yeah, most things seem a lot more expensive. Video games, for instance. Those aren't a necessity, but in the U.S. they usually cost somewhere between $40 to $50, but it's rare to find a game under $60 in Canada. Some are as high as $70! I like playing video games, but I'm not going to spend $70 on one.

We're WoW'rs and I hate paying exchange on our monthly fee. tongue.gif

Ouch.

My wife and I play Guild Wars or we used to when we were apart. That was a great way to spend time together between visits. You need to buy the game, but there are no subscription fees. That's was (originally) the main incentive for my wife. Then she got hooked. tongue.gif

It's just like everything else in Canada it will take us a few years to catch up. And heaven forbid we would have flashy pictures on our cards that might be too much for our canadian eyes. In canada we can't even get visa debit cards - crazy.

Another point along the same lines - ever noticed how much cooler US license plates are? I mean you wanna support breast cancer? Get a cool pink plate.

Don't get me wrong - I'm Canadian but I can't wait to get out of here. We take it up the a$$ with everything from cell phone rate, air fare, car insurance and beer. And cool plates and credit cards of course wink.gif. And what do we do? Nothing - we get used to other people telling us how it is and how it's gonna be.

I've said this a million times to my wife. The sad fact is that Canadians ALLOW this to occur. Why? Canadians aren't dumb (well, some are, but every country has some idiots) and can easily see what's happening to them and how the U.S. fares a lot better. Canadians should DEMAND change.

That's true, too. If I use my American debit card as a debit card, I get charged a fee. If I swipe-and-sign it like a credit card, no fee is charged.

I've kept and still use my American credit cards, so I don't see why you couldn't keep your Canadian cards. Just make sure you notify them of your address change and tell them you're living in the U.S., so they won't go berserk and put a stop on the card when you buy stuff outside the country. Sometimes credit card lender do that because they think the card has been stolen.

I could be wrong, but I think the reason they have two separate companies is because of the fact that the ingredients have to be different and they're not the exact same product. The formulations for products have to be a little different if there are ingredients that you can't use in one, that you use in the other. One that comes to mind for me is HFCS, which I know is harped on like crazy, but it's the reason that I would think they'd have two different companies.

Does that make any sense at all?! tongue.gif

That does makes sense. However, some items have HFCS (yes, I know that was just your example, but I'm going to use it) and the name of the product is the same.

You know what I found interesting? Is that the names of some products are different, but essentially identical otherwise. Take for instance Nabisco (which is owned by Kraft). It has that has an isosceles triangle in red and white, positioned in the upper-left hand corner on boxes with an orb and antenna-like object. In Canada, the brand is called "Christie's" for some reason. That's a different name, but the same triangle and colors. In yet other countries, the triangle simply had the Kraft logo.

So... both companies -- Nabisco and Christie's -- are owned by Kraft. I wonder why the names are different in the two countries. Maybe those two were bought up by Kraft at some time or another, but originally they were their own separate entities? unsure.gif

Another one is DiGiorno in the U.S., but Delissio in Canada. It's the same damn thing! Why the different names?

While visiting in Canada, I was very surprised that Naproxen (most commonly sold as Aleve) wasn't available in Canada unless I got a prescription for it. Naproxen has been an over-the-counter drug in the U.S. since 1994, so I was somewhat taken aback by this.

Since I don't live up there, I probably haven't noticed other differences. In fact, I wouldn't have normally known about Naproxen either, but my head was hurting a lot one day (it was, naturally, the same day my wife had wanted to go see a live performance) so I figured I'd stop into a London Drugs and pick up some Aleve real quick. I was soon surprised when I didn't find any on the store shelves and asked the pharmacist about it.

yes, sugar and HFCS are bad for you... but I think HFCS are worse then plain old sugar...

Yes, that's correct. I think Kathryn has a link to the data somewhere but, essentially, HFCS somehow triggers the brain into thinking the body is still hungry so you end up eating more than you require. In addition, it is much sweeter than regular sugar, so that's why everything tastes so sweet here. Blech.

While there have been some correlations been weight gain and HFCS, I think it's also important to remember that correlation does not equal causation. In other words, just because something looks like it might be, that doesn't mean it necessarily is. The scientific critics of HFCS have readily admitted that the problems associated with HFCS isn't so much the product itself, but the eating habits of Americans in general. People in the U.S. like to eat and drink unusually large portions and since many items have HFCS in them, them can cause some weight gain over time. The researchers in these studies said that had "regular sugar" been used in place of HFCS, the same would most likely occur. It's difficult to tell, however, since countries that rely less on HFCS and more on "regular sugar" take in smaller portions than the United States.

As far as HFCS keeping your appetite going, I've never heard that before and never seen it in any documented scientific literature. That doesn't mean it couldn't be true, of course, but there might be other factors at work here as well. In addition, the type of HFCS decides how sweet it is. HFCS 55 is just as sweet as "regular sugar" so there shouldn't be a noticeable difference; HFCS 90 on the other hand is sweeter while HFCS 42 isn't as sweet as "regular sugar." Which variety of HFCS is used probably depends on the type of food you're eating and the overall cost of implementing it at the time.

All in all, I stand by assertion that neither HFCS nor sugar is of much good to you except in moderation. It seems to me that's the best way to handle it. star_smile.gif

A cereal my wife likes that is available in both Canada and the U.S. is called Puffins. It comes in several different flavors, including original, cinnamon, peanut butter, and honey rice.

As for HFCS, I don't really see how ingesting large quantities of either sugar or HFCS is good for you. Both will make you gain weight and therefore, contribute to health risks such as type-II diabetes. Instead of complaining about HFCS and thinking sugar is fantastic (when neither is good for you), people should only have either in moderation. That's really the key with anything -- binge on any type of food, even if it's supposedly "healthy" and it'll soon become bad for you.

CanadaWhat's For Dinner?
What's for dinner changes drastically depending on whether or not my wife and I are together at the moment. When we're together, we eat "real meals" cooked and prepared by her. I attempt to help, mostly by keeping her company and staying out of the way. When we're apart, I instantly become the "Microwave Gourmet" which my wife says is an oxymoron.

Something my wife finds interesting -- and perhaps a little disturbing -- is that she'll ask me what I ate for dinner and I'll respond with, "I don't know; some sort of meat (or chicken) thing." She can't seem to understand how I could eat something and not know what it is... but I could watch the trailer to the new Iron Man movie and identify the types/models of cars that Tony Stark has in his garage (including the one he apparently crashes onto while testing out his armor).

I've tried telling her that most of the time, I just don't care what I eat. So long as it's not moving or attempting to harm me, it's fair game. This does not include pets. I do not eat dog or cat. Most other things... sure, why not? kicking.gif

So what does he do? He stopped dating her. He said he didn't "have time for a relationship right now." That seems like a poor excuse. If he doesn't want to date her, that's fine, but to blame it on a "lack of time?"

I told my wife this and she thought he should pursue the relationship. I do too. It's not our decision, but it seems to us that he had a good thing going on there and called it off for less-than-honest reasons.

My brother was dating a former Miss Georgia winner whose in law school with him now. He said they really got along and he liked her a lot. They're both on Facebook and from the tons of comments she's left -- and continues to leave -- it's very obvious she really likes him, if not more.

The thing I like about nascar is how its the last 5 minutes or so that really matter. I couldn't sit there for hours and watch cars go around in a circle. But with nascar, you turn it on just before it ends and you get the point. You get just enough information to make small talk at the water cooler the next day.

The only reason people watch racing (NASCAR or Formula 1) is they're hoping to see car crashes. devil.gif

How can you accurately compare one sport to another? Each one is its own entity.

Just to be safe, I'd wear a ghillie suit made up of maple leaves.

I taught my first class last night. No, I'm not a teacher or professor, but I'm volunteering at the local community center to instruct people on how to use computers.

It was great! I felt like everyone learned something and they really seemed to like me and my instruction. Even better, the volunteer coordinator was highly impressed. That means I'm likely to get a very good reference out of this and in the meantime, actually get some people to use and understand computers (to some degree, anyway).

Many of these individuals are older and have little-to-no knowledge of computers at all. For instance, there was one woman in my class that didn't know what a mouse was and had to be shown how to use it. Maybe that seems incredible nowadays, but apparently not impossible.

So anyway... I teach "Introduction to Computers" (a general overview course), "Introduction to the Internet" and "Introduction to Digital Imaging."

I've gained some weight. I blame my wife's cooking. Before I moving in with her, I survived on microwavable entrees and anything else that too minimal effort. tongue.gif

You sound like my hubby.. it was lean cuisine and wraps for him smile.gif

Oddly enough, that's exactly what I ate. unsure.gif

Unless they found it, I tried my best to disguise it. I woke up this morning wondering if someone found it or if someone bid on it. tongue.gif

I am going to a bridal shower today. Booo. I didn't even get a gift because I wasn't going to go but my MIL called yesterday and told me that she didn't want to go alone, and I know I wouldn't want to go alone so I said I would go along with her. It's just going to be cheesy... you're supposed to bring a wish or advice for the bride for a scrapbook they are going to make.

Hmm "Hope marriage doesn't go to your hips like it did to mine" laughing.gif

After I got married I gained weight. tongue.gif

I think that happens to everyone, I don't know what it is! I was the same weight for like 10 years, all of a sudden I move here, get married, and I'm +5 LBS so far.... hoping it stays at 5 and doesn't creep up anymore tongue.gif Have fun at the shower!

So... my wife and I were shopping one day and this a$$hole doing a survey walks up to her. He begins asking questions and even after my wife tells him she's not interested, he keeps pushing. I then walked up to the guy and the following conversation ensued:

[ME] You're doing a survey?

[HIM] Yes, I am. Would you like to do it?

[ME] Absolutely.

[WIFE] ::doesn't say anything, but looks at me oddly::

[HIM] Would you say you shop here often?

[ME] Yes.

[HIM] What for?

[ME] Cottage Cheese.

[HIM] What?

[ME] Cottage Cheese. It's the "other white meat."

[HIM] At... um... clothing stores?

[ME] It's usually available every other Thursday with a purchase of $50 or more. It's fantastic on wool.

[HIM] Um.. okay, let's try something else.

[ME] Of course.

[HIM] What's your profession?

[ME] Dispensing Cottage Cheese.

[HIM] Right. Okay. Who do you work for?

[ME] Her majesty, the Dairy Queen. I believe she got that nickname in high school, but I can't be certain.

[HIM] That's it. You're not taking this seriously. I'll find someone else to take this survey!

For reference, I don't work at Dairy Queen or any other fast food outlet. Never have. It worked for the situation, however.

My wife couldn't believe I did that, but after thinking it over for a moment, she couldn't stop laughing. tongue.gif
