Mexico, Latin & South AmericaBrazil vs. Brasil

yeah.. what is up with this "America" thing... I think it is way too much for me because after all America means a lot... there is South America, Central America, North America... so I dislike when I hear this "America" thing.. oh yeah

Hehehe, what are you talking about? Eu sou estadunidense. :P

Just rolls right off the tongue, doesn't it?

I remember when I lived in Italy, I would tell people I was American, and they always assumed I was South American. I'm sure that was, in part, due to my appearance, but what is the norm in foreign countries? It is appropriate to say you're American meaning that you're from the US, right?

I think so, I mean, plenty of people from the US are referred to as "brutti americani" in Italy.

For some reason in São Paulo people asked me if I was German a lot (mostly cab drivers)! I don't know about what's appropriate but lots of languages call us Americans too. The only other country besides Brazil (and the US) I've lived in was France, and they always called me americaine. But in Brazil I got lectured by some young political types for saying I was American. And most people would just say "gringa."

same here. actually been called many things. gringo, "half mexican", mexican, american, chicano. i prefer chopf#ck.

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaWedding in Colombia

...
An American buddy of mine is Jewish, his Colombian wife, Catholic:

They met a very friendly Catholic priest, he "baptised" my Jewish friend real casual and then conducted
the church ceremony for them, giving his Catholic Colombian wife the wedding of her dreams!

Dunno your respective religions, but my point is that Churches can be very flexible here in Colombia.
So maybe you two donot have to settle for a "civil" ceremony if your wife has always dreamed of something
a little more formal!

Cheers and Congrats!

George

that was cool. i am trying to remember the situation... but something to the effect that the priest provided a 'service' that was similar to the 'official Catholic matrimony' but wasn't because of certain reules and regulations but the net effect was a beautiful ceremony joining the couple. :D

bottom line, i agree with your advice. look around for a flexible priest.

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaBrazilian weddings

oh joy, just what everyone needs - gramps or granny advising on the honeymoon :P

Actually we have different types of godparents. The birth godparents, when you have a child you choose the godmother and godfather for baptism (not everybody has one as not everybody is baptized) and the wedding godmother and godfather, usually the couple's best friend, sometimes family member. It's different types of godparenting :P

correct.

I am not familiar with the OPs situation. Just wanted to point out there can be a significat difference between bet man and godfather at weddings.

Is this going to be a Catholic wedding? If not, the ignore the following:
For Catholic weddings, "godparents" are part of the wedding ceremony. Unlike american styled weddings' best man and maid of honor, they promise to help guide the new couple.

Look I can't even handle washing my clothes with another person's; my whole life, I have washed my clothes separately from my siblings and my mom. And I wash my clothes separately from Henry's and I use "nuff detol". So I ask thee, how am I gonna wear another person's clothes??? It would be tough. The closest I came was in college...my roommate's grandma used to knit her gorgeous sweaters, which she would wear once and then store away. Sometimes she'd lend them to to me and I would wear them till she said "aw keep it."

Wow! Gabacha! You hit the nail on the head! It's like you read my mind. I have the same concerns. I worry about his adjustment 24 hours a day. (I've even worried that he will want to 'go back home'). I live on the border, so once he can travel, he can go home to visit anytime, but I still worry all the time. May be I'm worried about nothing.

you will be fine. especially since you live on the border.

It's funny...Edgar only rarely will speak English with me. He says I make him nervous but he can yap away with customers where he works just fine. I asked if he thought we'd start speaking in English together in the States, but he says, nope...it's been too long in Spanish to make the change. When I try it feels forced.

kinda similarf with ana and i. ana has started using simple english phrases around me though. simple like "oh my god" "whatthe hell is that? (<-- my fave  )

so i've started responsding with small phrases too. "yes, that is correct" "let's go" .. etc..

cool thread!

it has been over a year now that Ana has been here. :D We spend most of our ime together. She made a friend via her ESL class. Most weekends we spend some time with my family. Ocassionally we attend social events by a handful of my firends. They've all taken to Ana like bees on honey. Ana has always been able to integrate into differenta social groups back home so it has not been tough for here here. We are starinting to make an effort to integrate ourselves with local churh members.

But, like nay other couple, it it touggh making time and energy for that extra effort that requires. We both work, (oh! that helps Ana a lot too), then thehousehold chores, "us" time, etc...

We haven't planned it. It has been more of a "retirement" thing.
It all kind of dependes. If we have children. How things go economically. etc...
Ideally, we would move back and forth. But that is just not realistic for us.

you should really fill out the applicaiton to the best of your abilities. if there are no exact equivalents t o your home country, mark whichever is closest to the best of your knowledge.

for networking, that takes time and effort. in the time you build up your network, you can try working at jobs taht do not require contacts. that accomplishes a number of things. shows initiative. helps improve your english. buiilds up your network. get paid ( :D ) builds up your confidence.

I've seen this with Ana. She is is similar boat as you guys. What she did in Mexico was way "above" what she is doing here. But it is an investment/stepping stone so she can get back to where she was. I do have contacts. And we did go talk to them. The y all said the same. That Ana was well qualified but that she need to master her english. ok, so how do we do that? the route we chose was as described above. it will take some time. but i definitely see how her english is improving, she consistently outperforms her co-workers and thus re-inforces her self worht, she is building relationship with coworkers who can be part of her network.

so, keep your spirits up, keep trying , do not give up. all of you are sharp people and will do well.

keep in mind that positions are rarely filled by unqualified "quota" filling applicant. you will see a lot of unqualified friend/associate/relative being hired.

so, if you apply nd get hired, it was becasue they thought that all of the applicants, you were hired because you were deemed "best fit" for the job/company. whatever that "best fit" may be. it can range from good (best prepared.. or most flexible) to bad9can be hired for cheap!) or whateve r the company is looking for.

good luck!
