Here in Egypt, we will start our fast after suhoor on Saturday morning insha'Allah.
I guess it *should* be the same for the rest of MENA, but you never know.
Not sure about the US but I think they are starting Saturday morning as well.
It will be nice to have everyone on the same schedule for once instead of starting on different days. smile.gif

Ramdan kareem to all my sisters and brothers. star_smile.gif

Alright, I couldn't listen to this lecture when it happened the other night but it is up online and you can listen. It's maybe an hour or so long, but really worth taking the time.
It's by Muhammad Alshareef and it's called The Fasting and The Furious. laughing.gif
Here is the link
Lecture
This was so good mashAllah and brought tears to my eyes a couple of times.

Please sisters take the time to give it a listen and insha'Allah this will be helpful to you all during Ramadan and afterwards.

How to Make This Your Best Ramadan Ever
Taken from a lecture by Shaykh Waleed Basyouni (may Allah preserve him)

Know that fasting this month is based upon the love of Allah and the earnest effort to gain his pleasure and to acknowledge that it is only through his bounty that we’re able to gain sustenance. This commitment is based upon the ability to abstain from one’s food and natural desires, honoring and holding dear the obedience and pleasure of Allah over his own pleasures, and demonstrating his preference of the hereafter over this life.

Fasting enhances the believer’s piety and being mindful of Allah…

“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous” [2:183]

The Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam said,
“Fasting is a shield with which a slave protects himself from the Fire.”
[reported by Ahmad and it is authentic]

Here are some things we can do in this month to make it our best Ramadan ever insha’Allah:

1. Du’a: don’t forget to ask Allah to help us make this the best Ramadan ever. Six months before Ramadan, the Sahaba used to make du’a to Allah to help them in Ramadan, and in the six months after Ramadan, they made du’a to Allah to accept their deeds in that Ramadan.

2. Don’t let Ramadan start while you still have envy in your heart to your Muslim brothers and sisters or you will be starting Ramadan with a sick heart. Free yourself from this sickness for this blessed month, and take out any envy or jealousy that you have in your heart towards someone.

3. Repent to Allah before this month starts. Start this month while you don’t have the weight of bad deeds on your shoulders. Fill your heart with hope and love in this month so that you can benefit from it. Leave those sins that you have been doing and start doing good deeds.

4. Increase in doing the sunnah. (i.e. Fast like the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam; eat Suhoor just before Fajr, don’t delay your iftar, break your fast with dates, do this all for the love of Rasul Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam, try not to miss any takbeer of the taraweeh. Don’t say you’re tired. It’s only a matter of days before you don’t have the opportunity anymore…)

5. Choose a friend/family member to help you in this month. Choose someone who you think is better than you in deen and ask him/her to help you learn and benefit in this month. i.e. Go with him/her to taraweeh, distribute food to people together, clean the masjid before prayer, etc.

6. Stay away from sins, major or minor; Especially in this month.

7. Stay away from what will not help you to be a better Muslim. (ie. TV, video games, music, shopping, etc.) Protect your eyes and ears from haraam. Try to join the circles of knowledge.

8. Go to the masjid 10-15 minutes before the Adhaan (not iqaamah) and wait for the adhaan (read Qu’ran, make dhikr). The sweetness doing this is unknown except to those who do it.

9. Take advantage of this month to be best to your parents and relatives. These days in Ramadan, their hearts are open & it is your best opportunity to establish a good relationship with them.
Join your community in iftar, taraweeh, etc. help them financially, in volunteering, etc.

10. Try to take a vacation. Take some time off of work so you can worship Allah.

11. Before you pray taraweeh, read the tafseer/translation of the ayaat that the imam will recite in taraweeh, so you will enjoy the prayer more.

12. Give a lot of Sadaqa. This is the sunnah of the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam.

13. Make time once a week or per day to talk with your family about the virtues of fasting.

14. Brothers, don’t waste your wife’s time by asking her to cook so much for you and your family in this month. Let her cook what is enough and sufficient for you and your family.
Sisters, don’t waste your time in the kitchen.
The minutes in this month are so valuable, try to read Qur’an, pray, and increase your iman.

15. Sisters, during this month when you cannot pray or fast, you can read the Qur’an without touching the mushaf, you can listen to qur’an, lectures, give Sadaqa, feed people, make du’a.

16. Every night, ask yourself if you have done your best in this day. And if you haven’t, make firm intention to do it the following day.

17. Make it the month of da’wah. Visit, advise, and remind those who you know who have not been praying or fulfilling their duty as Muslims. Teach new Muslims about their religion.
Give da’wah to the non-Muslims, this is a good month for them to accept Islam.

18. Each day and night tell yourself, “I may not live until the next Ramadan, I may not even live into the next day, so let me do my best in this day or this night to worship Allah.”

19. In this month, Allah is coming towards us and He doesn’t need us, we need Him!
Allah welcomes us in this month, so do not turn your back to him.
He opens the gates of Jannah for you and me, so make your best effort to come close to Allah.

May Allah help us to make this the best Ramadan ever! Ameen.
May Allah accept it from all of us. Ameen.

Hi Ladies....just joining this thread & needing some advice. My husband is Muslim and I am Christian. I've never been through Ramadan before and I am seriously worried about what I should do for my hubby! I don't know the exact "procedures" if you will and when and where and how. sad.gif I feel like I should fast with him, but I don't know how I should even begin. Is it correct that you can even drink water during the fast? Need some help ladies. This will be his first Ramadan away from home and I want to make it the best I can.

Amanda

It's really sweet and admirable that you want to do this with your husband, but honestly if I wasn't Muslim there's no way I would fast. It is a trying task to be sure, and it is 30 days! No water or food or smoking or coffee or anything from before the sun is up until the sun sets below the horizon.
I think that helping to make his fasting easier is a great gesture instead. good.gif

You might want to ask him what he prefers to eat for suhoor (the food eaten before fasting starts) and then you can get it ready for him in the morning, and ask him what he likes to break his fast with. It is customary to break you fast with dates and water or milk, but this varies from country to country.
Make sure he is drinking lots and lots of water during the night after he breaks his fast, and try to find dinner foods that are filling and healthy. Sugary and fried foods are not going to help anyone fast. laughing.gif

From what I understand, he is responsible for your actions but only to a degree.
As your husband he should help to teach you things you don't know, and should help you follow through with things if you need help, but he is not responsible and there is no sin on him if you are not fasting. That will solely be your responsibility. No one can make anyone do something they don't want to (or are unable to do), they just need to teach and show the way. It is up to each individual to perform their necessary duties.
I hope that made sense, I've only been up for a short time. lol

Like last year, I couldn't fast due to health reasons. My husband was unhappy about it, but only because it is such a HUGE deal to fast and to miss fasting.
But he knows it's not his fault, or his responsibility. I knew about fasting and what is required, I just couldn't do it last year. That is all on me, not him.

Now if you didn't know about fasting and he wasn't teaching you or trying to help you with it in some way then he would perhaps be responsible for those actions. But you already know about fasting. Unless he is preventing you from fasting in some way, I don't see how he can be held responsible for your not fasting.

If you are traveling a minimum of a certain distance away from your home, something like 53 miles or more, you do not have to fast. However, you do have to make up any fasting you missed, so if it is easier to fast while traveling than to make up the fasts later, it is okay to go ahead and fast.

There are some more technical details but this is the general idea. I searched around but apparently wasn't using the greatest search terms, because I couldn't find much but I know there's a ton of information out there about this.
Maybe someone else has a link handy for it.

Wonderful news! Keep us posted on your progress!

In terms of Ramadan food- I find that it is so hard for me to wake up earlier than my normal work get-up time to eat- so I am always racing to stuff something down! I hope to plan better this year and have sahoor ready to go insha'Allah. As for iftar, I always have a bottle of Coke on hand during Ramadan- I never buy it but during Ramadan... I also get a box of those big Mejool dates but I only eat 1 or 2 a day and always have leftovers.. My daughter and I usually prepare a little iftar snack consisting of whatever we have around the house- we put it on a special plate.

I converted in 1996 back when Ramadan was in early March I believe. The days are getting longer and it is getting harder. I work in a very old building with no air conditioning and am fully hijabed up.. so it gets very hot. I remember last year I was just so wiped out after coming home that I just came home, threw off my clothes and laid on the bed and slept until iftar. Sooo tired! Any ideas as to how to get through these loooonnnggg days?

tongue.gif

I am more than a little concerned myself about getting through the long hot days. Insha'Allah hubby and I will have an apartment in a week or two, so at least I will finally have air conditioning. It's been so hot without any a/c here in Egypt.
But, I think they are moving the clocks back early here to coincide with the start of Ramadan, so I'm guesstimating that iftar will be around 6. I hope not much later than that. And we are usually up til sometime between 2 and 4 a.m. anyways, so getting up/staying up for suhoor should be no problem.
But it's still a long day of fasting and we haven't even hit the longest days yet. I think it's another 10 years or something til the days start getting shorter.

Um... after that bit of uplifting blab, lol, Bajih can you put a fan in your office? Maybe a small size one for your desk? Hopefully it would help at least a little bit. Maybe taking a cool shower when you get home from work will pep you up? Or.... what about mid-day, using the ladies restroom and splashing your face with some cold water? Or several times a day if that will help.

I have to say, I am really disappointed with the way people eat here during Ramadan. They fast all day and then gorge themselves all night long.
I am hoping since hubby and I will have our own place and not be at his folks house, that I can change that this year, at least for him. tongue.gif Can't control what the rest of his family eats though.
I am just so sick of the food at this house. Everything is fried or cooked in too much oil/grease. I love my mother in law, but she's killing her family with food. sad.gif And it's worse during Ramadan. Because then there are too many fried sweets on top of all the regular fried food. *sigh*

The signature pages of the sponsorship documents must contain the original signatures. Other than that, you can scan the other documents, email them to him, and he can print them in Egypt.

Thanks for your response but I dont have a scanner and I have about 200 pages because I am sending 3 years of tax returns and 3 years of the tax transcripts just to be sure im not leaving anything out. I just want to know if anyone has has ever sent that many pages and about how much it cost to send. Thanks

Jeni, I have been sending my husband documents via the USPS with the flat rate box or envelope. That way you can put what you need in there and it's a flat rate and plus you can track it online. Or at least I was able to track it to Cairo then my hubby got them a couple days later in Luxor.

Hi All. I am USC and I am married to an Egyptian. I just recently returned back to the states after staying in Egypt with my husband for a little over 6 months so we could file the petition DCF. I am back now and getting all the tax papers and other papers together to send to my husband so that he can send packet 3 forms back to the Embassy there and I am really worried about the big stack of papers I have ready to send to my husband. Im worried that I wont be sending the right information so I will be sending the last 3 tax transcripts and the last 3 years tax returns both of these just to be sure I am sending the right things. All together I probably have around 200 pages of things to send to him. Has anyone else had this many papers? And just wanted to know around how much it cost to send all these papers and the safest way to send them. I heard UPS was about the best is this true? Thank you so much

Jeni, I know Cairo isnt known for responding quickly but why dont you try calling or emailing them and just ask if they want a new one for you....maybe that will put your mind at ease.

Good idea! It'll take a week for them to respond but it sounds like the week's break of worrying will be worth it!

I did email them and it does take them a long time to respond so I am hoping they do it quickly. Ok I am starting to understand my father and I both need to do I-864 and not combine incomes I do one and put my income and he does the other and puts his income but on the I-864 it has a place that ask you how many people are in your household size my kids and I are living there with my parents so should my father still add us to his household size and me also add mom and dad to my household size on my I-864. I am not working but going to college so truefully my dad is supporting me and my kids. I just dont know what to put for household size thanks.

If the CO asks you for a document....then you submit it.

We would have requests for documents that we KNEW were in the file and sent with the file because we made copies of EVERYTHING that was sent. But there was no argument..... you do what they say.

If the embassy wants this document that is fine I have no problem in that but I dont know what to do about combining our incomes and our household when I am living with my joint sponsor and he is also my father. When I completed my I-864 I combined mine and my father's income and included me, my 3 kids, mom, dad, sponsoring husband but If my father doesnt do the I-864A then I cannot combine incomes or household members so therefore do I need to do a complete I-864 over again also and then what would I put for incomes and household members because I am living with my mother and father. I know when you do I-864 and I-864A you can combine incomes and you must include all people that live in the household together but when I am doing the I-864 and the I-864 you can't do that so I am not sure how to fill out this out now.

We sent the I-864 from me and the I-864A from my father to the embassy and the embassy said my father will only need to do I-864 but they didnt say anything about the form I-864 that I did and on that form I included my mom and dad in my household size and added my fathers income to mine but the embassy didnt say this needed to be corrected. no0pb.gif you thought wrong.

You fill one I-864 all by yourself as the primary sponsor.

Dad fills another I-864 as joint sponsor.

My dad fills out the I-864 even though I am living with my father?

Read the instructions. the primary sponsor will ALWAYS be the spouse, ALWAYS. So yes, you fill in one I-864. Your dad fills in another one as a joint sponsor. Very straightforward.

I understand that but I thought if I was living with my father then i would be included in his house hold size and he will fill out the I-864A. If my household member (my father) does not complete the I-864A what is the I-864A for and what circumstances would you use the I-864A? Thanks

no0pb.gif you thought wrong.

You fill one I-864 all by yourself as the primary sponsor.

Dad fills another I-864 as joint sponsor.

My dad fills out the I-864 even though I am living with my father?

the best advise is dont ask why, just send them EXACTLY what they are asking for. smile.gif
good luck

That is what I was thinking just send to them what they ask for but like when I filled out the I-864 I filled out the form and added my father's income to mine so we could combine income since my father did I-864A and we are living together but if I do a I-864 for my father then what do I do on my I-864 not add his income or add him as household count? that is confusing me cuz I know when I do I-864 and I get housemember to do I-864A u add their income and household count on MY I-864 but if he is not doing a I-864A then I am not sure what I put here. Because I am living with my joint sponsor and he is my father

So, you submitted the first 864 and just included his income to yours on 1 single 864? and then you included the 864A right?
I just searched VJ and it seems that he needs to fill out his own 864 using the "cosponsor" choice. You also fill yours out. In other words, you DO need TWO 864's...one for you and one for your father.
http://www.uscis.gov...0004718190aRCRD
that would make sense seeing as they are asking for one from him. I hope that helps

So I already completed a I-864 and included my fathers income and mine together and put on my I-864 that there is 7 people in the household my mom, dad, me, my 3 kids, and my sponsored husband so if my father does the I-864 that will look like we are not living with him because I thought if you live with family member they only fill out the I-864A so does that mean I need to complete another I-864 and disregard the other one I did and not add my fathers income to my I-864 since the embassy doesnt want the I-864A. Im just so confused because I thought I filled out the I-864 and if i was living with my father and he was helping me sponsor my husband then he would fill out the I-864A

Hi has anyone or will anyone file for their spouse DCF in Cairo Egypt. My husband and I have done that and now I am back in the states and we sent all packet 3 forms back to the embassy however, the embassy is sending back forms to my husband stating they need another paper and not the one we sent and I am not sure why. If anyone has filed in Egypt could you please respond to this question and I will go into more details about the papers they are sending back. Thanks

I am living with my parents in the US and my father is the co-sponsor I filled out the I-864 and my father filled out the I-864A because I am living in my fathers home and he is a house hold member does anyone know why the embassy sent back the completed I-864A and stated that they do not need that form they only need the I-864 from my father. I thought the I-864A was for joint-sponsor to fill out if we were living together? Anyone know why? Thanks

I wonder if there any woman on earth called Mohamed LOL

I hope that you will get an interview date soon .they are so busy now with DV visa .
Good luck and my best wishes for you both .

Mohamed

That is so funny laughing.gif

What are DV visas btw?

Aya sis....they called me Sir today too, lol!!! The DV is Diversity Lotto.

I think the Embassy dont know what their doing half the time. Sure they should know the difference between a man and woman's name LOL They do not seem to want to help much. I emailed them a couple weeks ago about our packet 3 papers and they wrote back and all they said was "if I wanted to know the answer then contact a lawyer" and then I emailed them back and they never emailed me again. Good thing they accepted our packet 3 papers this time. But I was very suprised I thought we would get our interview date much sooner then this. I wonder why some people get their interview dates soon and others it takes much time. I hope since we got a late interview date they my husband wont have to go through long AP and he will be approved soon after his interview. Our baby is due Feb. 18 I hope he is here before then.

Hi just wondering what some other timelines are from Cairo Egypt. My husband and I filed the petition DCF, I am now back in the states and my husband is still in Egypt. He send packet 3 October 23 and he got his interview letter today October 11 but his interview isnt until December 22. That seems like a long time has anyone else experienced this much time for their interview or what are some of your thoughts on that? I thought maybe he would get his interview in like 2 weeks or so after packet 3 so I am a little concerned. Any suggestions??? Thanks
