It's easy to see how the money issue could quickly ruin these relationship...and I'm glad to see that I'm not alone...(although I wish I was because I know how much this sucks balls for all of us!!) I just hope that our men learn sooner rather than later who really has their best interest in mind...and that whether or not they believe it---family ain't always it!! I know my husband has a very hard time believing that his precious mother can be manipulative towards him---whenever it comes up I swear I always end up hanging up in order to save my marriage. Just this past weekend she made her mother (who is in her 80's) get up out of bed and go all the way down to his house, just show she could show him that his grandmother was hungry!! What kind of bullsh#!@ is that? He called me in near tears and ended up going out on the street looking for money to give to her. This, after he had already explained to his mother his and my situation and why we were strapped at this point in time. Do you think it mattered to her one bit? HELL NO!! RASS...

#1) Your situation has nothing to do with his family, nothing at all. Tell Mom to go and apply for housekeeping at a hotel...what do they want him to do, rob and steal??? and they shouldn't even be thinking like that, they were surving for years on whatever he could provide and yes times are hard now, but they will survive.

#2) speechless at her making Granny get out the bed and walk, she nuh have no neighbor or other family she can ask for help.

I really hate to see injustice.

When I was out of school and broke i used to go and boil cornmeal porridge and eat, she is bloody out of order.

My husband is to the point where he doesn't want a thing to do with anyone Jamaican or anything Jamaican. He hasn't forgetten where he came from........
he is just tired of all the BS associated with where he came from. So, the next time I hear someone anywhere use the term forgot where they came from, I want everyone to truly think about what may have driven them to that very place. I feel so sorry for him.

JG --

Tell him don't worry about that. That is what my father did. It's been 30 years now and his family and friends have the UPMOST respect for him. He shutdown and lackdown everyone...even his mother. Because it was going to cost him his wife and family. And for those M #)(*$$(* krs... that keep calling...girl I wish you could foward them to my cell number. I would be more than happy to talk to them.

good for him, in our family all the siblings would put together and buy whateve they needed for the grandparent.

JG, sounds like their are some real scam artists, why are they behaving like that, did these people used to scam in j.a. too? and why are they trying to constantly pull him into their schemes?

After the week I've had, you really don't want my general opinion on supporting the family cause it will come off as rude. I am going to suggest he finds a way to rein it all in cause it will only get worse when he comes to the US. And, don't think they won't find a way to make him sick over it from that far of a distance.

I wish you both luck in figuring it all out.

I am so afraid of this...you know, we try to have these conversations every so often, and he SWEARS that he will not allow them to do it...but I know better. I have a feeling I'm going to be coming up with a whole new set of curse words when we have to deal with this here...

As soon as he leaves j.a. all the so-called problems will start, they are used to him supporting them and he is used to it also.

I was about to say that... Girl, let me tell you it's not going to get easier. I've sat my fiance down and talk to him and told him how it is. When you land in America A.K.A. "FARRIN" everyone else in your family in Jamaica think you have a backyard full of money trees. His cousin already told him how they going to send money for him to buy car or motorcycle and send it down. I've been there many, many times. People's feelings will get hurt and family members will stop talking to you, but who gives a RAT'S A$$. You came to the states to be with me and support me and our family. I didn't break my neck spending money to get your A$$ here only to have you work and support your family out there mad.gif Very touchy subject for me. I watch my parents have many arguments over things like this, because everyone depended on my dad eventhough he was the only one with very young children by the time he came to the states. His other siblings were well off, but no one brother to call them. So, if you can't deal with my rules and regulations, just tell me what date you want me to reserve your airline ticket...chat bout! No room for neigoations there and my fiance is forbidden to give out the house number. They can call the cell number until mi batteries burn up mad.gif

Tre.....true words, girlie. I needed to hear that today. Thanks. What I would not give to mash up the phone some days!

Afternoon yaardies...I was hoping that you all could just send up some prayers for my hubby...he is having such a rough time financially right now...there are so many things we have going on and he's being stretched thin (whatever that means...since he didn't have much to stretch with in the beginning!) As many of your SO's probably are, he is not only supporting himself, but he is also supporting his mother, grandmother, and 2 nephews (please don't get me started on why his brother won't support his OWN children but can somehow find the means to go back and forth to the Bahamas for months at a time ranting33va.gif ranting33va.gif ) Anyway, he was/is doing the best he could from week to week, but now with the increase in taxi fare, it's going to cost an extra $40/US per week for him to get back and forth to work sad.gif He works in Runaway Bay and lives in St. Ann's Bay...I was thinking of getting him a bike so he could bike to work sometimes, but he's afraid of riding on the roads with all the crazy drivers...I don't know what to do at this point...any ideas? He almost refuses to accept any monetary assistance from me WHATSOEVER, so I don't really push the issue...unless he brings it up....which is usually too late. Quick story: One time, I hadn't heard from him in a week, and of course I was frantic---well, I had gotten a call from his aunt who's a nurse who told me that he had been in the HOSPITAL hooked up to IV's because he hadn't eaten in almost 2 weeks!!! This man DAMN NEAR DIED because of his pride---he didn't want to ask for any help!! After that incident we had a LONG talk about the consequences of pride and the fact that sometimes, we all need somebody at some point. I appreciate the fact that he doesn't ask...I've never had that problem--but come on now---IV's??? I love him so much, and his will, determination, strength, I admire so much, but I also know that he's being pushed to a breaking point...it seems like there's just one thing after another all of the time, and a man can only take so much....Thanks for letting me vent.....

Tamisha

No problem in venting we all do it at some point, my heart goes out to your husband, the bike sounds like a good idea to help save money.

Nice try...but I tried that. I just hope you don't get this woman. Well, dem might no badda u...mek u husband do all the talking. Sometimes they say fill out one form for one family then when you get to Mobay they tell you something else. Better to have it done. If they say you only need one, then you can tear up the other one. If you need to fill out one they won't let you get in the immigration line...they have you stand off to the side and fill it out. That's what happened to me when I traveled with my son. JENGS....mi figet fi ask you...How you mean a only 1 more trip mi get to Jamaica and is for the interview. Now, you sound like Marcel, but mi caan go back a Jamaica without him. Well, this is what I remember from back in the day to go to the port in Mobay I can't remember where and I think back in the day they charged you by weight. They do go through it. Some places will actually deliver it to your home in Jamaica for a fee, but you still have to pay taxes and all that. Girl, we've not shipped a barrell since 1992 and it was a DAMN headache then.

That Marcel sounds like a smart guy good.gif

so they will deliver it to your house and you pay to clear it then??

I think so too, Jengs. Next it will be, you have to pay to check in, pay for security to bug the ####### out of you, tip the person who scans your ticket...............

I'm cringing of how much my sister's wedding might cost if we have to pay to check all our bags. I'm trying to get her to utilize "barrells"

If you book your ticket now, they CAN'T charge you in Dec....Then can only implement new rules to affect people buying tickets AFTER the announcement...

Oh ok, I have my tickets and we are going in Aug. I'm going to have to check the websites and print of the policy cause i'm sure someone will be trying to charge me and I'll be vex.

Rules apply to the baggage, doesn't matter when you booked. That's a rule across the board.

Please mention to your sister, if they are bringing wedding favors down or shipping early....do NOT MENTION that she's bringing wedding/party favors to anyone checking luggage or customs as they be asked to pay import and export taxes and they can get reeeeal shi&&y!!

I highly recommended to a client to specifically NOT to ship her favors for her wedding prior to her arrival and to bring them in some that were traveling -- I was also invited and I said I'd even take some in my luggage. They wanted to charge her $200 - 300 ?? She didn't listen to alot of advice that I had given to her. They had never traveled to Jamaica and I went *with* them to basically "babysit".....when I found out that she was getting charged for all of that...I went and had myself a beer in the lounge !!!

really? when US air changed their baggage policy recently I had already booked a ticket and the change didnt go into effect until May...so I guess once they set a date it doesnt matter when you booked if you are TRAVELING past that date...but if you are traveling before the changes are implemented then you should be okay

Every airline is different, here are just a few that have put in the new baggage requirement...
USA 3000: Effective 5/1/08 the baggage allowance aboard all USA3000 flights will be 1 checked bag weighing no more than 50lbs and measuring no more than 62 linear inches. Additional bags will be accepted at a charge of $25 per bag each way. Bags over 50lbs

3/25 /08 --Delta Air Lines will now charge $25 for passengers wishing to check a second piece of luggage. Elite frequent flyers and high-fare-paying customers may be exempted from this new rule.

SOUTHWEST -
Baggage Allowance: Beginning January 29, 2008, Southwest will allow two (2) checked pieces of baggage per ticketed Customer. Size and weight limitations apply.

Excess Baggage: Effective January 29, 2008, you may check a third bag for a charge of $25. Your 4th through 9th bag or item will incur a charge of $50 per piece, and any bag or item thereafter will be $110 per piece.

03/31/08 --Northwest Airlines will match Delta, United, and US Airways in charging coach-class passengers within North America $25 for a second checked bag. The new rule goes into effect May 5.

AirTran will now charge passengers $10 each way for checking a second bag, effective on bookings immediately for flights ticketed to travel starting May 15. Additional checked bags will incur $50 charges each. (Elite frequent flyers and business-class travelers will not pay the fees.)

US Airways - second checked bag will be assessed a $25* fee. The new fee applies to travel on or after May 5 for tickets purchased on or after February 26, 2008.

and spirt air is charging for checked luggage for international flights. I think my next trip after the wedding might be a cruise from nyc, can't take all the new fees.

Lawny - Is where u going in my suitcase?? You are only allowed one more trip for the year and that is for the interview!!

and now i'm off to bed cause i have no right being up this late.

Royal Caribbean -changed its policy on accommodating infants on cruises. Now, babies must be at least six months old to travel on any RCI ship (or 12 months minimum on trans-Atlantic, Hawaii, trans-Pacific, or selected South American voyages, as well as cruisetours). This is posted on RCI now but won’t be widely enforced until October.

I'm sure other cruise lines will follow suit ...

I must say, all these new rules are just starting to get to me. paying for checked bags on domestic and international flights. what are the fares for?? shouldn't it cover all that??

Okay. I know I asked this maybe 4 months ago. My friend did K-1 to get her man here. She filed the OAS packt after they were married and months later she got the green card. The expiry date on the greencard is good for 10 years. She called to inquire about it, but was informed that that card was valid. She wants to know if it's safe for him to travel to Jamaica since his mom is sick. She's concerned because she was told the card was only suppose to be valid for 2 years and you have to remove conditions. Which is the way I understand it.

If she was told the card was valid, I would go with that, sounds like she did her due diligence.

5 THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR CELL PHONE COULD DO
There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:
FIRST Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile, network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock.
Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Editor's Note: "It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a cell phone!"

THIRD Hidden Battery Power. Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

FOURTH How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #, a 15 digit code appears onthe screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

And Finally....
FIFTH Free Directory Service for Cells Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial: (800) FREE 411, or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now.
This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.

Gill, congrats to Ken on the job! Is it Nagasaki? I spent many nights there, lol!

Ditto, is the club still upstairs? Congrats to Ken!!!!!!

Thanks Jengs..I need to PM you...sorry! blush.gif Actually, I think they moved the club downstairs now...I haven't been there in YEARS!!!!

I am so happy that he can feel somewhat independent again...the extra $$ is going to be nice...but Ken is the type of guy that HAS to feel like he is contributing to society. He LOVES work (G-d bless him)!! He can't have not one non-productive day! no0pb.gif I know the 'not-working' was starting to get to him. But, what drives me NUTS is that he didn't see how much my life had improved since his arrival. He did the laundry, cooked, took the kids to school, picked them up, coached soccer, spent time with my sons...all of that means SO much to me, not just a paycheck! But whatever!

Next step is the learner's permit, probably in a few week...then driver's license to give him even more independence!

What's up with that? Then it says I need to pay $355/US for the I-864 and $45 for the security surcharge...wah di rass. Then it said I can pay it to the NVC if I want to. Did anyone else get anyting like this? Like mi need anymore rass stress pon mi big head.

Lawny,

Sounds like they have your visa type screwed up. I thought at this point you would just have to pay the $100+ for the visa appt/interview.

Hey Ladies;

Had to go for a long walk to clear my head. Now, I get back to my desk and get an e-mail from the embassy saying they did mail out packet 4 and all now I don't get it. So, I politely asked again, when it was mailed they said the 18th of April, so I e-mailed them to ask what address...DEM AVE DI WRANG ADDRESS

How is that possible? The address on the petition and the DS-230 are all the same. I don't know where the heck the got the address from for my fiance and they promised to mail the interview letter to me (that address is also wrong). Wrong number and wrong street name. This is just not my time.

Gone for another walk. I replied with the proper address. I'm so fustrated. How could this have happened? No wonder we don't have Packet 4 yet. NVC and DOS have the proper address.

Ask them to e-mail the info to you or he can go and pick up packet #4. When I was concerned about Mike not getting his in time for his medical, I emailed them and they emailed my back with a date to pick the packet. They subsequently re-mailed the packet to both of us and we received them in a week.

Try that. When you have an interview date, they are quick to respond. Goodluck.

Thanks Claire, I did e-mail them. Actually, they replied 4 times in less than an hour. I think they know I'm fustrated, but I am always polite, but FIRM. I didn't want to push too many buttons since they were nice to enough to give me the date and time I requested. Oh, well, I hope it will work out by this weekend. Likkle more.

Well, here the airlines go once again... UNbelievable !!!

US Airways raised its fees for ticket changes by $50 (they’re now $150 for domestic fares and $250 for international fares), effective immediately. Elite frequent flyers won’t pay the fee if they’re simply changing dates and times of travel, but the fees will apply if the changes involve different itineraries.

I'm sure that all the airlines will follow suit !!!

WHAT! mad.gif Thanks for the INFO. I still can't get over paying $25/for the 2nd suitcase. First it was WEIGHT 70lbs to 50lbs....UNBELIEVABLE!

I'm going to buy a DAMN BOAT!

Boat, shoot girl...ya gonna row it? As you know with the price of gasoline!!! SUCKS !! Driving to my sons flippin soccer games this past Sat and Sun almost 2 hours away for each game....I have to fill up the tank almost 3x each week!!

It's only going to get worse. Not all the airlines are following suit with the baggage thing and those that are are waiting till May. The heavier the plane, the more fuel....and that's why they are trying to sticker shock everyone to packing heavier !!!

SOME airlines are now charging if you want your "preferred" seat....like US Airways and only Airtran (not booking with a travel agent) ..you gotta pay $5.00 !!

This industry is worse than our stock market !!

Oh and another one....only Spirit airlines (that that I know of right now)- ---so anyone traveling with an infant, please make sure you check the travel policies....domestically. Internationally they still have to pay for taxes, don't know if any of them (off hand) are charging on top of the taxes...

SPIRIT airlines ----One child over 7 days and under 24 months of age not occupying a seat, may be carried with a customer for a fee of $25 each way, effective May 1, 2008.

boy, can't belive, I didn't pay anything for the baby when we went to disney and i thought I had to pay the taxes, but i was told no only for international travel and that was on AA.

The only thing I have to say about the buying food information is that Andre liked it so much better that he got to go with me to the international store and farmer's market to pick out exactly what he liked and wanted to cook. He familiarized himself with what we had to offer and how to get there to get it.

Speaking of foods.....any of you heard of some mommy (not sure of spelling) tree or bush? Andre said it's like cantelope only green inside. Would this be our honeydew? Or something else? Sometimes he is so vague about things, I have hard time wrapping my mind around it. He said the only time he ever had it was in country. Can we get this here?

the first time i went shopping for him, i bought home the wrong pepper. he should have told me, he wanted scotch bonnet pepper. Instead my man is like bring me some country pepper. huh?

ok, lol, mr jengles told me on saturday he don't like american beef, because it doesn't have any gristle wacko.gif mind u I cooked beef that was cut up already. Question ladies & gents: If my husband wanted to buy a plane ticket from JA to the Bahamas, does he have to have a direct flight? Can he have any US connections? (like Miami) or can he only connect in Kingston since all he has is a passport? Trying to find some good tix for our trip next month, and not sure what he's able to do or not do. Thanks.

No, he cannot step foot in the US (even in a connecting airport) without a valid visa. On all international flights, you have to go through immigration. He would not be allowed through without a visa. So, yes, he must go direct to the Bahamas, in this case. +

Tre....I know how you feel. One reason I go to Church is because the Mass is always the same basic format. When my life is spinning out of control, I need something that is always predictible.

Also, Andre sometimes chides me for paying so much attention and stressing about something I can control. I'm like, hush, this is the one thing I know what the outcome will be. Just let me have that.

Here's what I found. I think the costs are outdated a little.

Of interesting note, too, was that the parties have to be married AT LEAST 2 years before they can file. Interesting stipulation.

"First you file the divorce papers called a 'Decree Ni Si' at the Supreme Court. The main cost here is the $2,000 stamp fee. The registrar then checks it and sends it to the attorney.

The papers are then personally delivered to the person whom is being divorced. This is referred to as service of petition.
The person who serves the divorce papers can be anyone, as long as they are over 21.

After the papers are delivered, a date is set for a hearing. The petitioner then goes to court and gives evidence saying why he/she wants the divorce.

Before this, however, the person who was served papers can acknowledge receipt of them in the court, but this is not compulsory.
Cooper says in most cases, the person against whom the petition is filed does not show up at court.

Six weeks after the court hearing, the petitioner can then apply for a 'Decree Absolute', which means that the two are divorced.
And it is after this process that another court hearing that seeks to settle asset disbursements takes place.

At around, $15,000-$20,000, Legal Aid offers cheaper divorces. But first you have to satisfy the state-sponsored law offices that you cannot otherwise pay a private lawyer.

Grant says clients are required to pay, immediately, a consultation fee of around $5,000 to $6,000.

"We then conduct a means test, which determines their income and expenditure. If they are above the threshold, we refer them to a private attorney," he said.

Grant also explained that the legal fees are often paid over time.

LOL, Costs are really really outdated! Try around $60,000 -

OUCH, that hurt too, thanks for the info ladies.

Dang, Lawny. So much drama. I hope everyone gets better soon. Sorry for all your troubles. I hope your next embassy visit goes much smoother.

How are you feeling now?

Dont matter youg or old you SIMPLY DO NOT refer to someone as boy or gal in this country is rude and DISRESPECTFUL!!!!!!

I'm sorry it has hit such a nerve with you.

I don't see anything wrong with calling people boys or girls in some contexts. Like I say I love you girls. It's not meant to be derogatory. If it is said in a derogatory fashion, then I do see it as being wrong.

JG --

I'm good for right now. I don't think you offended her or anyone of us. It's the way it is said. BWAY or GYAL...is very disrepectful. Let Andre say it for you and you'll understand. It's just the way it's said and how it is directed. Because if anybody call my GYAL and war mi ago war and star gwaan bad.

In that case, I don't think I want to know. Thanks for the clarification.

Usually when so meone calls a man bwoy, the response is ususally "is who him a call bwoy" and then it goes downhill from there.

question - who issues divorce decrees in jamaica?

Hello..There is still hope for those awaiting an interview date...

I called the NVC again today and spoke to a supervisor who claims that the KGN interviews are still being scheduled as of today. I adv her that last night an operator read me the 'script' and advise that KGN interviews were scheduled and we were not included. The supervisor today apologized. I don't know who is playing but at least there is still hope.

So for all those still awaiting an interview date PRAY.

You are in my Prayers Forbes...I am so sorry!

Why can't they just get it together?

Bless-ed,
Gill
