I wonder if youngwanderer's application does go faster caz of the barcodes? I know you can still use what we have sent since they are good until May but I wonder if using the new one will speed up the process... hmmm! Either way we should have biometric appts within a month and that's fast enough for me!!

 

 

Has anyone begun to study the civic questions? My husband hasn't looked at them!

 

We shall see whether those barcodes help my application go through the system... that's what I'm hoping for! :) I waited such a long time to apply though, so waiting a few more months isn't going to kill me.

 

I haven't started studying yet, I plan to begin after receiving the official booklet of questions - I think those are given out at the biometrics appointments?

Forgot to mention: I had everything ready to mail on Tuesday, but noticed when double-checking the lockbox mailing address that USCIS posted a new version of Form N-400 literally that same day, on Tuesday 2/4. You can read more about that here: http://www.uscis.gov...-naturalization

 

Anyway, I filled out the new version because I'm hoping the new barcodes at the bottom for "efficiency in processing" mean they'll get processed faster! wink.png

Hi! Finally mailed in my N-400 tonight, after being eligible since 12/1/2010 based on 5 years as a Permanent Resident. It took a while, but I finally sent it in. My receipt from USPS (Priority Mail) says it should get to Dallas on Monday. Here we go... good luck, everyone!

Try early walk-in. I also could not make my appt, and was allowed to do an early walk in at the Brooklyn ASC office. I described my experience earlier in this thread.


I also have a BIG PROBLEM.
Perhaps some of you guys can give me an idea on how to fix it.

My fingerprint appointment is on 04/03/13. The problem is that I will be out of town for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I cannot postpone or change this trip.
I wonder if I take the appointment letter to the finger print center tomorrow they would let me do it right there and then.

Anybody with similar experience?

Updating. Couldn't make my original biometrics appt for 03/26 (I am teacher, got exams to proctor that day). Anyway, I walked in early today at the Brooklyn ASC center. Got there around 1:45 pm, got past first security guard, no problem, didn't even mention anything about the date. Got pass 2nd guy who checks your fingers to make sure that there are not cuts/bruises, again no problem. Didn't mention anything about the date. He gave me the Civics Test booklet. Waited for a while for a fingerprint technician because all of them seemed to be on break. Of course, I couldn't complain anyway because I wasn't suppose to be there in the first place. Anyway, right before my number was called, I heard the technician yelling at a guy for being there early. Wow! Got a bit scared in that moment, but once she called me, I said upfront, "Please don't yell at me, I'm a bit early. I am a teacher and I can't make it to my original appt because of school duties". She said "Okay, I won't give you a hard time because you told me up front and you are a teacher." Yayyy! She completed my prints and I was good to go. I was in there for about an hour. I guess after lunch they move slowly because in the past I've been in and out of there in 15 mins.
FYI, I didn't walk-in early because I thought it would speed up my case, I went because it would be tough to make my original appt. The ASC people actually are more understanding if you have a valid reason for walking in. If you don't, they may turn you away (this is what the technician explained to me)

I listed two traffic tickets (both under $500 fines, neither were DUIs) on my application. I was given an N-14 Request for Evidence at the end of my interview for court dispositions, to be mailed back to USCIS within 30 days of my interview, before my application can be approved.

 

It was incredibly frustrating because my officer told me after my interview that I should have just not listed the tickets because they don't care if they're under $500 and don't involve drunk driving. He said they would never have found out about the tickets.

 

The worst part is I received these tickets over three years ago when I lived on the west coast (I'm in NY now) and it's been a nightmare trying to contact the courts for these documents. These courts destroy ticket records after three years and I can't physically walk in to request a certified court letter saying I paid my fines and I'm clear. I have to mail in written requests and it'll take at least 45 days to turn around. So frustrating. I wish I had not listed my tickets.

JimmyHou - I think you're right... I hadn't thought about that. Yes, I signed with my new name on the photo and certificate.

 

Congratulations and thanks for the excellent write-up.
I wonder if the reason they had you sign your photo at the oath ceremony and not at your interview was because of your name change. If you had signed it with your legal name at the time of your interview, it wouldn't have matched your new name on your certificate. I assume you signed the photo with your new name.

I interviewed on 6/2/2014, but ran into a request for more evidence during my interview, which you can read about here: http://www.visajourn...35#entry7068372

 

I wrote to USCIS in July asking for an extension of the deadline and didn't hear back. On 8/21/14, the USCIS text notification system sent me a message saying that I'd been scheduled for an Oath Ceremony (I was surprised but very happy to hear). On 8/25/14, I received the actual oath ceremony letter. Oath Ceremony was 9/10/14.

 

 

Thanks so much for the info. Very helpful! Just wondering how long you waited to receive the oath letter after you interviewed. Thanks and congratulations!

jonoger1984 - have you considered making an infopass appointment to ask about your application?

 

 

My advice to anyone doing their ceremony at Brooklyn:

-It will take 3-4 hours, so definitely bring a book! i also recommend bringing a pen.

-Visitors were directed to the third floor and they were never allowed to enter the room, so it's better to just celebrate with your family and friends afterwards (don't waste 4 hrs of their day!) 

-at the court house: take off your belt and put it with your other stuff through the x-ray machine before you go through the metal detectors

-Cell phones are NOT allowed, you must check them in with security after passing through the metal detectors (I left mine at home so I wouldn't have to deal with the line/wait)

-Oath ceremony takes place on the second floor, there are signs and people to direct you to the correct room

-before entering the room, someone checks the back of your appointment letter to see if you filled out the questions. make sure to put BROOKLYN for the location, because that is where the courthouse is, and the date is the date of your oath ceremony.

-You get seated in the order you arrive. the lady telling you where to sit will had you an envelope with a passport application, the oath of allegiance, a letter from the President (i thought this was a sweet/nice touch), and folder to hold your certificate inside.

-Most of the time was spent waiting for people to get seated, then they called us up row by row to get in line to turn in your appointment letter, confirm the yes/no questions on the back, and turn in your permanent resident card

-After you turn your card in, you get in another line to review your Certificate of Naturalization for spelling errors, and the correct birthdate, etc. If it's all correct, you sign your name on the certificate and the copy of the certificate that they keep. My photo wasn't signed, so the lady asked me to sign my photo on both copies as well (for some reason my USCIS officer didn't ask me to do this at my interview, which is when I think most people sign their photo).

-After that, you go back to your seat and wait some more... they explained that they have us there for 4 hours because they never know exactly when the judge will be ready.

-While we waited for the judge, a woman from ____ (I can't remember exactly what dept she was from) wished us congratulations on behalf of Mayor de Blasio and told us about discrimination law and where to go file a complaint if we ever felt like we were discriminated against for race, age, etc.

-Then another woman passed out voter registration forms and also congratulated us and reminded us about how important it is to vote in our local elections. She collected completed forms from anyone that wanted to register.

-Another announcement from one of the women running the ceremony about which forms to file to petition for family members, etc., and what to do when the judge comes into the room.

-Then, Judge Pamela Chen was announced. We all stood as we were instructed when she entered the room. She led us through the Oath of Allegiance, then the Pledge of Allegiance, then everyone sat down. She told us the wonderful story about the mural hanging in that very courtroom (you can read about it here: http://www.longislan...to_citizenship/), and then she left. Her story was very moving and made me even more proud than ever to become a citizen.

-Next, they passed out the court order for change of name for anyone that requested it (48 people that day, including me) by calling out one by one to pick them up at the front of the room

-Finally, they had us come up row by row again to pick up our naturalization certificate and THEN we were allowed to go home.

 

 

Next up for me: I need to change my name and update my status with SSA (which they advised everyone to wait 10 days for -- has anyone gone in earlier than that successfully?) I also need to get a new license with me new name at the DMV and then apply for my US passport! I also have to change my name at my banks, etc.

Hey everyone - a very happy update from me. If you'll recall, I hit a road block during my interview: I disclosed two speeding tickets on my N-400 and my USCIS officer gave me a N-14 Request for Evidence (specifically looking for letters from the court saying I'd paid for my tickets and was in clear). It took me a long time to get in touch with the courthouses because I now live in a different state and the tickets happened over 3 years ago, so I wrote a letter to USCIS asking for a deadline extension. I never heard back so I just kept working on the courthouse letters and hoped that I wouldn't be denied because I had to wait on the letters.

 

I finally got my dispositions from the courthouses on 8/20, and as I was getting ready to mail them to USCIS, got a text on 8/21 saying that I'd been scheduled for an oath ceremony. HOORAY! I received my ceremony appointment letter today 8/25, and will be taking the oath on 9/10. I will definitely be bringing these letters from the courthouse to the oath ceremony, just in case. ;) What a relief!

Hi everyone, sorry for the delay in updating my case... I was very upset and needed the time to cool down.

 

My interview went ALMOST perfectly: I was sworn in, we did the 6 questions first and I got all of them correct right away. Then we went through my application question-by-question. Everything was going well, the officer was friendly and I was actually enjoying the interview up to this point. It was when we got to the "Have you ever been arrested, cited, or detained... for any reason" question that things went wrong.

 

I had listed two traffic tickets (both under $500 fines) on my application that I received in 2009 and 2010. I was given an N-14 Request for Evidence at the end of my interview that says I need to send court-certified dispositions for my tickets, within 30 days of my interview, before my application can be approved.

 

I am incredibly frustrated and very sad. I disclosed these tickets as a sign of good moral character, but now that my approval is delayed I feel like I am being punished for being honest.

 

The worst part is I received these tickets when I lived in another (very far away) state and it's been a nightmare trying to contact the courts for these documents. Both court houses have told me they destroy records for small tickets like mine after three years anyway. I've written a letter to my interview officer requesting a deadline extension. We'll see what happens. Fingers crossed. :(

I also received this yellow letter - do you know if this is a normal request? I sent in a (high quality) photocopy of the front and back of my drivers licence with my packet.


I'm not too concerned. I also sent in a high quality scanned printout of my ID. It seems to be pretty random to me - in looking at previous cases it seems like some people received a yellow letter and some didn't.

Anyway, youngwanderer also got in line a few days before his biometrics appt (judging by the table at least), so I would guess it doesn't matter where you file.  :bonk:

Received the text and email today from USCIS: "On March 10, 2014, your N400, APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION was placed in line for interview scheduling." Added a column to the table to track this date as well (it was in some of the earlier threads for other months' N400 trackers), hope no one minds!

 

Also added hoatimbatu to the table, and updated Jonoger's in line date.

Hey Triniphone, 

 

Here's the short answer. Got there for 8:30 am, didn't  leave until 12:30 pm. Walk with a lot of patience. The actual part with the judge and oath only takes like 15 mins (for us from about 12:00 to 12:15), the rest of the time we were doing administrative stuff.

 

To all who will have there Oath Ceremonies at Cadman Plaza EAST,

 

 First of all, it's cadman plaza east not cadman plaza west. BEWARE.   To get there, take the A-train to High Street. It might be the closest station. Although you could definitely take the 4/5 to borough hall and walk.The ceremony was due to start at 8:30 am. I got there around 8:15 am.  Don't go too early because the earlier you go, the more patience you need to have. Of course don't come late either. I would suggest somewhere between 8:15 and 8:30. Security was kinda hostile, but ignore them....brooklynites! lol) If you bring your phone, after you go through security you will have to check in your phone. You will have to go to the 2nd floor for the court room, your guests will need to go to the 3rd floor in the cafeteria to watch the ceremony via live feed. I carried my husband but I might advise you to not bring a guest. I mean they have to wait 3-4 hours just to see the thing on TV. Anyway, once we got to the 2nd floor,  we were all lined up to go into the courtroom. Be sure that you have already answered the questions & signed the back of your Oath Ceremony notice form. If you haven't already signed it they will ask you to sign it while you're in the line. Anyway, we all got into the courtroom and were seated in order by one of the court officers. We were also given a packet that contained stuff like a cover for your Naturalization Certificate, oath of allegiance form, letter from the president, passport application etc etc. By the time we were all seated, it was about 9:10. Okay then we were told that we will be called up row by row (in order of which we arrived) to submit our old green cards. Be sure you bring all old green cards and old employment authorization cards. After submitting these cards we needed to check our naturalization certificates to make sure all the info on it was correct, and to sign it. If some of your info is incorrect and you don't realize it on the day of the Oath Ceremony, apparently you have to pay $200 to get your info changed later on (that's what we were told by the court officer). Anyway there were 274 of us, so this process took all of like 2 hours. People were very impatient....this is NY, we are all always busy. lol. After that segment, they spent like 30 mins calling up people who wanted to change their names to collect some time of certificate or something. Alright then we had to wait 10 mins for the judge to arrive. We were warned that if we were to go out of the courtroom we needed to make sure to come back in before the judge arrived because once the judge arrives the courtroom is closed and you will not be able to enter so your oath ceremony would have to be re-scheduled. Finally the judge arrived, we said the oath of allegiance. She declared us US citizens, then we said the pledge of allegiance. She then said a few words and left. After this, we were called up in the order in which we arrived, to collect our naturalization certificates. Once collected, we were allowed to leave. This process will take all morning so make sure you don't have anywhere else to go in a hurry. Walk with a book and a lot of patience...it took 4 hours but I know it was worth it. 

 

Damn 4 hrs!!!!?

 

That is ridiculous. But it's NY so there's always a wait.

Anyway in the end he printed out a sheet of paper and then asked me if I wanted to wait now to get my oath ceremony letter or if I wanted to have it mailed to me. He told me that I would have to wait 1-2 hours. I was lost as to what I wanted to do because I had a ton of things to do (I am a teacher) and my hubby who was with me had to go back to work. But I felt it would be great to know when the oath ceremony would be right away. Anyway, in the end I just said I'd have it mail to me. And he walked me out. Of course when I told my hubby about the oath ceremony letter, he was like, we should have just waited on it. Oh well! Can't change that now. I'm approved, Praise God!

And really? I guess that is something new they are doing cuz my interview two weeks ago they didnt ask me if I wanted to wait for my oath letter.

Hey Trini,

 

we're going to the same office (filing under different circumstances I know), but what did you carry? Also for the $300 ticket did you have to go into the Driver Responsibility program or did you just pay the ticket and that was it?  I read on the N-400 guidelines that once the ticket is below $500, you don't need to mention it. And based on what you stated here, I imagine that you did not mention the ticket on your application, nor did the IO mention it and that was that right?

All I carried were actually my passport, greencard, and proof of Selective Service. She only  took my passport and green card because she printed out the proof of SS for herself. As for the ticket, yeah I had to go to the Driver responsibilty program because they added two points to my license. If you claimed you were cited on your application then the IO is going to ask you how/why/when. I put no, hence the reason my IO didn't ask any of that.

Dropping in with a few quick questions here. Those of you who received your green card through marriage, what documents do you plan to carry to the N-400 interview? I  was just simply planning to follow the guidelines that came with the interview notice, but when I check the forums, it seems like people are going above and beyond (well, they are definitely carrying more than what's stated on the notice). Also, what are the guidelines for traffic tickets? (this is NYC, everybody who drives has some type of traffic ticket). And do you carry copies of the documents that you already submitted with the application? For example, I already submitted copies of my tax docs for the last 3 years with the application. Actually you know what,  I guess it won't hurt to carry more copies. Anyway, I just want to know what documents you plan to carry to the interview.

 

Traffic tickets are no big deals.

 

I had several parking tickets, a $300 speeding ticket, and an $80 speeding ticket, all in which I paid off.

 

I didnt mention this to my IO nor did she ask.

I'm still surprised I applied March 1st and I am already scheduled for oath ceromony.

 

Hopefully they schedule me for next Friday because there is an oath ceremony every Friday in Brooklyn and if they do, the entire process took less than 3 months.
