CanadaMy Canadian Passport Expires in January 2011

I would do it more then a month before it expires though. You don;t want to have an expired passport and have some kind of emergency that you need to get back home for (and yes, you can have an expired passport and still travel)

For renewning - I believe within 6 months of the expiry date is acceptable. Mine expired this coming Dec'10 and I just renewed it last week while I was back home. It won't impact you AOS at all - you're renewing a Cdn document as Krikit notes.

My review of renewing it:
http://www.visajourn..._1#entry4047153

PS - I did it in person at an office on Jul 5 and I received it by Fedex today Jul 14 - my guarantor and my references were called. They were asked questions about how they knew me , what I looked like and my US address.

So glad to have read this, and know how successful it is. I plan to do the same thing this fall. (mine expires in April '11) And I wouldn't know how to have references and guarantor, unless I mailed it back and forth. *Note to self, use people who know me REALLY well*

M613 Congrats on sending of the AOS! I hope all goes well, and quickly for you. Are you hoping to go back to Canada later this year? It's strongly possible you could be getting your GC within a couple months or so. You may want to consider doing the same thing (if possible) and renewing it then.

CanadaGetting a US credit card not that hard after all...

An American airport or Canadian? I will have to try this :o

It was American. I really didn't expect to get the card. So far, it's been accepted where I've used it.

CanadaGetting a US credit card not that hard after all...
I filled out an application for American Express at the airport in April. (Just so that I could get the free gift..lol) Even though I don't work, and we have very little yearly income, lo and behold, it came in the mail!! So cool, now I can start building a little credit. This one is a for Delta miles (yay) and the first year is free...the second..um...not so free..

Ugh! *hits herself in the forehead*...btw...that's great it was an easy transfer!

CanadaBargain Shopping Forum
Don't know if this fits or not...or if anyone uses it. It's a link for travelling and such..

Travelzoo.com Tim and I have gotten some GREAT deals.

For instance:

The hotel in Orlando. $39/night, PLUS buy one ticket for Arabian Nights dinner show/ 2nd one FREE, PLUS two free drinks in the lounge!! (hotel was a Comfort Inn)

The Hyatt Regency in Vancouver during my interview...$119. (room I stayed in can be up to a max. of $499)

Cirque du Soliel....$25/person

We're also booking 3 nights in Williamsburg, Virgina at a great place for $52/night.

Those are just some examples. There are trips, flights specials, entertainment. You sign up and they send the top 20 deals of the week to your email. Sometimes, you can get a great deal on a cruise, (7 night Mediterranean cruise, about $325).

For those that like to travel, it's a good one to have. We're hoping for some good deals to come along for Myrtle Beach, as that's the first part of our honeymoon..then up to Virginia! Can't recall the name of the hotel but it's really quaint and perfect!

Oh..and a side note, the deals aren't always for now. You may need to book now, or for a time limit of a few days...but take the trip further down the road. Sometimes a few months later, long enough to plan your trip.

Welcome to VJ Diana. Don't be afraid to come in to ask questions, vent, or tell us good news! :) This whole process can be very overwhelming, and stressful. We're all here to encourage and uplift each other. One thing you can do is research the things you'll need for the next step. I was always doing that, so there wouldn't be too many surprises. One thing that is usually asked at the interview is proof of relationship, so keep emails, and proof of phone calls, anything that you send each other through regular mail, pictures and proof of visits to each other, things like that. I can't vouch for everyone, but my interviewer asked me and I had lots to prove! :)

CanadaWrong Consulate
I have to admit..that was one of the things I loved about the Vancouver consulate. They do respond quickly. I hope your files arrive there soon. They'll send out your checklist right away too, then you can get all your things together. Don't forget, you don't have to have your medical before sending that checklist back. You can do it the day before, the day of, or the day after your interview, depending on how long you can stay in Vancouver! Check on Woking clinic's website..(can't remember it exactly right now) but you can also see what kind of immunizations you need for your age. Make sure your birth certificate is in long form, (both parents names on it) and gather all your evidence together, (minus the affidavit of support, because you'll want that to be as current as possible) I also had file folders with me to keep everything separate so that when she asked me questions, I knew exactly what file to turn too.

I'm very sure that one of the reasons I was approved is because I was prepared and organized (thanks to this site)and even though I was as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, I acted as though I wasn't. Kinda like crossing the border. Keeping answers short and sweet, but not giving too much information.

How exciting! Looking forward to reading all about the rest of this journey for you! :)

I would also STRONGLY suggest that your sister and her fiance look at this web site, and all the answers too, because it's very difficult to be a go between in something like this. They need to realize how critical all this is. That's why so many couples get into "trouble". They just don't take it seriously enough.

Hope it all works out for the good for you sister.

CanadaFun News from Home!
I have the news channel from Victoria in my favourites, and go to it frequently. There sure is a lot of stuff happening on the Island! :o But one of the things I just recently watched was the fire ban that is on the lower part of BC and Vancouver Island, except a little strip of land (beach) called Goose Spit in the Comox Valley! (where I'm originally from) Because there is water on both sides of the strip, you can still have fires on the beach. There is nothing like an evening out in summer, sitting around a fire, roasting marshmallows! Good ole CV for keeping something alive!

It's funny, but here in SC, people give me strange looks when I tell them I miss sitting around fires in the middle of summer! :P

Canadacan I work via laptop for Canadian clients while in the US with AOS or CR-1 pending?

I personally can't see how it would be a problem. How many times has one visited the US and withdrew money from a bank machine? Why would it matter when the money was deposited into that account in Canada? You are not allowed to work in the US for a US company and take away a job from a citizen or LPR. Thats why the law is in place. Not to prevent people from visiting and working for their Canadian employer remotely. That would kind of end a lot of business trips.

hmmmmmm good point. Not that I know all those legal sides to all that. Wouldn't it *almost* be the same as say...someone receiving child support or government benefits from their own country?

Definitely give them a call, Simmy. *Slowly kicking herself for not seeing if she could have worked online for a Canadian company or something before she left!*

CanadaMedical Redo for RFE, cause THEY LOST IT

Ashen-I would still file a complaint with the USCIS and/or congressman/senator about this matter....and make sure you keep all the documents and paperwork about your additional medical too....really it's their fault, not yours here....
Good luck in your situation for a speedy AOS and hope you get this sorted out too....

Ant

You know....I realize that you wanted to get it done, because of the deadline and all, and more than likely I would have done the same thing. However, we know that you are not the only one this happened too. I think a few RFE's for medical came because of...*cough, cough*...misplaced files. I''m wondering if that's why I didn't get an RFE for...and I didn't have my medical sheet transcribed either.

The fact is, you, (and others, not just Canadians either) did exactly what you were supposed to do, and that's have a medical, pay high $$$ for it, so that you could move to the States. To have to redo that, because someone in an office somewhere got careless....(or POE, or whatever)

But yeah..those that had to redo it...should make a big deal of it. If enough complaints come in, perhaps..*and this could be funny, funny, funny* things could get handled better in the future....

Just a thought.....

Funny how the spouses "tend to forget" to mention things...like the fact there are diamond back rattlesnakes in this area! We saw a *thankfully* dead one in a parking lot the other day...

Hi all!! Just got back from our trip to FL. It was great, I love that state! It was also interesting. The paramedics were called to the plane on the way to FL for a young man that had a suitcase hit his head from above, (he looked really embarrassed to get off the plane first) AND another one was called for a young guy for a drug overdose on the way home. He was sitting right in front of us, and I saw track marks and bruises all over his arms. Hope he got help in time :(

Heyyy guys!

Guess what?

I got a job!

So no more complaining from me

It's actually a funny story, I'm going to be an Insurance Agent... Yeah, I don't know anything about insurance.

But I applied for a receptionist position with this insurance company (Job interview #2 I mentioned last week) and I thought the interview went well and yada yada, but they never called so I assumed it didn't go as well as I thought it did. But they called me today and ask me If I would be interested in becoming an agent? She said she thinks that job would be a better fit to me skills and that I would be good at it. They're going to train and certify me and teach me everything, so I'm not supposed to worry that I'm completely in the dark. Hours are great, benefits are awesome, pay is pretty good, so I'm going to give it a try! Definitely something I never thought I'd do... But, I'm actually kinda excited about it. If I hate it then oh well, but it'll be cool learning something new!

I start Monday! :D

How cool is that!! Sounds interesting!

So. I am bored out of my mind in this place. Due to the commute, my husband is working longer hours, then passing out on the couch to make up for the lack of sleep. I am sick to death of looking for somewhere to live to pass the time so I have decided to go back to Canada on Monday. Only four more sleeps. Yay!

awww Hope you find a nice house soon. I really don't like house hunting either. Enjoy your visit to Canada though! :)

In LGG news, I am running like MAD here! I used to be a hard core runner -- like every day for about an hour or so and then when I moved to the area I lived in in TO, my motivation was robbed by living in a dirty, congested part of the city. Living here, with the clean and forest and pretty has brought back my motivation and I am running nearly every day again. I was worried it would hurt getting back into it but its' been a lot easier and it's made me feel very healthy.

AND... I got my green card in the mail today! It's SO cool -- not green though but I am very happy to have it and now I feel like I'm done waiting for a while with this stuff and then I can move onto ROC when it's time.

Enjoy your running...and congrats at getting the GC in the mail! :D

I just heard the loudest crack of thunder EVER. Seriously, that was terrifying. It sounded like a car crashed into the front of the house or something ridiculous...

I LOVE thunder and lightening. It's so funny to have has storms here these past few months. We hardly ever got it back on Vancouver Island. (although, yes..thunder can be pretty loud!)

Oh and I drove through Santa Barbara with Tim, and my friend from Fresno a couple years ago. Beautiful place, but sure does look expensive. I don't think I could afford to live there! Here, where I am in SC, I notice that homes that are for sale for about 250,000 would go for at least 100,000 or more back home!! Sure am tempted to sell this place and move!! *what am I saying??...I just DID move!*...

I have never had to deal with that kind of stuff on my wedding, but I had things said to be on and around my wedding that hurt.

When I went for my last dress fitting, yea my dress was a little tight, and my MIL said: "You'll have to get liposuction before your big day" that really hurt my feelings.

Then on my wedding day, I was jokiing around with the photographer and asked: "Did you get my good side?" and my husbands grandmother said: "Do you even have a good side?"

I may not be drop dead gorgeous or a hot tamale... but I am comfortable in my own skin. They are not, and it shows through their comments and how much they focus on things like weight and looks. That's their misery though. I gained 40 pounds since I have lived here... so what. I'm happy.

I remember seeing a pic of you from your wedding. You look fantastic!!

I've gained about 20 lbs. Do I like it...ummmmm NO!! But like you, I'm happy.

One of my friends here, she gained weight because of various circumstances in her life, and when people said..."oh..you gained some weight.." she looked them right in the eye, and with the best attitude I've ever seen said to them..."yeah...but I still look good!!"

I love my friend! :)

Huggles, as for the job rejection thing - just keep in mind that they don't really know YOU - they only meet you briefly so they don't know how good you would be at the job, they can, sometimes, only go by that piece of paper. Now some employers are more intuitive and can see right away how brilliant you are, you will meet one of them and voila'!

I agree with this! We'll both get fantastic jobs!

Good luck with the driving lgg! I got my license a little later in life, so I know how it goes. I was pretty scared of driving for the longest time, but when I turned 20 I made a commitment to myself that I would get over it and get behind the wheel. It was a long process, my mom wouldn't drive with me without screaming, my dad would freak out a little and try to mash invisible pedals on the passenger side of the car... and then I went to driving school and scared away my first instructor and had to be reassigned. But, I made it through!

Wish I could have somehow knew you..

I taught my late husband how to drive...and he was 38 at the time!! Plus, it was on a standard! :o I tried to talk him into letting someone else teach him, but he said "no" he wanted me. I actually found it one of the easiest things to do. I love teaching people how to drive!! I should have pursued that as a career..lol

You never know what sorts of volunteer opportunities are out there, or that you can make for yourself. I volunteered for a local dog shelter here, somewhat on a whim, and now it's evolved into me running their twitter account (@sb_DAWG *cough*... lol), and writing articles for their newsletter. Definitely more resume enhancing than just walking dogs!

That actually sounds like fun Ashen. Or at the very least, interesting..

We're going away in a week, only for a few days..but I'm thinking that when we get back, I may go to the SPCA and see if I can volunteer there. I think sometimes it's more of just getting out of the house than it is to have a job. Although...the $$$ would be good too!

I made a scrapbook of the first years of our relationship and gave it as my wedding gift to my hubby. It was nothing fancy -- I just bought a plain scrapbook cover and the extra pages to go with it. I saved all our movie stubs, all the hotel keys we stayed in during our travels, all our cards to each other and all the letters we wrote each other while we were apart. I just put them all together, put a little note describing what was in the picture and the year that we took it. My husband loves it, I think he got teary reading the book :P I completed the project while waiting for my interview date. It was very therapeutic and kept me sane. And best of all, I probably just spent 30 dollars getting all the materials and I have 4 years worth of memories saved in the book :)

Wow! Ummmm not me. I spent lots of $$$$ When I was getting ready to move, I first thought I'd throw out all my supplies and start over...then hit myself in the forehead! :bonk: There's a lot of dollars wrapped up in that  So I actually sent down a box that had all the supplies in it. I'd kinda like to get good enough to maybe do it as a side line. Lots of people love the idea of a scrap book, but don't want to be bothered taking the time and all.

I understand it would be VERY sideline if I did do that... Probably make enough to just keep me in supplies!

aww Rhianne...I'm sure you'll find something. Do you like decorating? Baking? Photography? Scrapbooking? Photoshop? Gardening? Sewing? Reading? Walking? Painting? Sometimes the simplest things we do, can become a hobby.

Years ago, I thought I needed to "do" all these women things..but truthfully... I don't like to knit, or crochet, or even needlepoint. It's just not my thing.

And don't worry about spending a little on a starter kit once in a while. You'll never know what your are interested in until you try :)

It was suggested to me once to put together a scrap book for Tim of our relationship. I had never done it before. On a grumpy note, I definitely didn't get job #1. They contacted me today and said they went with someone who had a lot more experience, which I guess you can't really argue with. That stuff happens when you're a young college grad. I'm trying not to be to disappointed about it because I still have the other job opportunity in the works, and that's the one I actually wanted to be honest, but now I don't have that feeling of options like before. Oh well, I'm not going to let it get me down.

Sorry to hear that. I kinda feel the same way with BBWs; the manager said they'd be hiring for mothers day, but I think I still need the 2nd interview, and wouldn't some training be in order? I'm now guessing I won't be getting the job there. Oh well. I'm going to look more closely at doing an online course, from a school in Colorado. I just have to do research to make sure it's accredited. The course itself is only 4 months long. The wisteria came out yesterday along the sides of the roads here - beautiful, cascading curtains of lovely mauve and purple flowers that extend for hundreds of yards in some places along the sides of the road. It is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen - it always makes me feel so happy :)

[size="3"]On the other side of the coin though, the pollen is terrible! Everything is covered with yellow green dust and as you drive down the road you see clouds of pollen dust swirl around the road the same way snow does in winter. I am not allergic to it, fortunately, but it definitely gets into my eyes and nose and I sneeze and my eyes get gritty.

I love the wisteria! I've never seen so much, and it looks so pretty. Tim likes it too, just not in his yard! So lucky for me, our neighbours have it covering one of their trees, so I can still enjoy it! :) *no fence between our yards either*

Oh yeah! I know what you mean about the pollen!! Wow!! Never quite seen it like this before....

the doctor's appointment went ok I guess.. I spent almost 2 hours waiting in the waiting room but when I finally got called back I only was there for maybe 10 minutes if that... The doctor basically said , " if you have gallstones we remove the gallbladder" ... the way he said it it sounded like there were no other options

so I guess they are going to schedule me for surgery in the next couple of weeks.. :S he said you are in the hospital for about a day and then you need a couple of weeks for recovery....

I don't think my kidney infection is getting better  it still bothers me... I have about 6 or 7 more days of antibiotics left though.. I see my doctor on Friday so I will tell him about it then..

I hope you get scheduled soon for that, and your kidney infection gets better before Friday. If not, then at least hopefully the doctor will have another trick up his sleeve.

I hope everything works out for you, and that you feel totally better from everything soon.
I'm hopefully going on a medical plan at the end of May, I really want to see a doctor about these hives already. They're still around, 7 months with no breaks.

Wow Rhianne. I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you find a solution soon. Did you do a search online to see if there is anything you could use? I've done that a couple of times with things, and it's really helped!

So, I just went for a job interview, which was more like a job questionnaire. They gave me this 5 page booklet of hypothetical scenarios and theoretical questions and asked me to write up detailed responses. It seriously took me almost an hour to complete it! I mean, it would have been easier for someone to ask me these questions and then have me respond verbally, right? Maybe they're testing out my writing and spelling skills?

So anyways, I do that, talk to the manager for about 5 seconds, get home, sit down on the computer and the phone rings. It's them. They want me to come back in at 1 for a "formal interview" geez! I mean, I'm happy they called me, I guess my responses worked well enough, but wouldn't it have made more sense to do it all at once? It's not like they're next door!

Oh well, if I get the job then I won't have any problems with this at all...

 I wouldn't be hired if they saw MY writing skills!! EEEkkk I have terrible penmanship! Cool about them calling you back so soon though...hope it all goes well! :)

I got the job!

I've got a brief orientation and walkthrough later today, then it looks like I'll actually be starting tomorrow morning! :o

I'm a little on the fence about some aspects of the position, but it IS a significant job with a high-profile arts organization, so I'm not going to complain. I'm just grateful that I was able to get a job so quickly, and on the arts side of management / administration to boot! :D

That's great!! Sounds like a very interesting job. I'll be happy right now just to ask, "did you want a large coke with that?"

 If I see or hear anyone complain about getting a job, I will freak the eff out.

You have been warned. LOL

 I'm with you!
