Here is the plan at the moment for favors: Our colors are black, red and white and I am using roses for the bouquets, plus rose petals for table confetti, so I think the rose ball candles would be a neat fit.

Those are just like the ones we used for nameplates!: What we used. I do like your idea of putting the menu choice on them too. That's very thoughtful of you. Makes things flow a lot faster, with fewer interruptions.

Now, just to get my fiance' over here on Monday. *sigh*

How exciting!! We're still in the "where are we going" for that stage..we've talked about a two week road trip around the eastern States, but then Tim shocked me the other day by saying if we find a good deal then maybe we'll go to Hawaii!! That is where we met. I told him I'd be happy either way.

Same in PA, you do not need witnesses. All the weddings I've attended in Canada, the bride and groom sign the marriage cert, pose for photos, the attendant(s) sign as well. But here, the signing is done in private.

I have to keep reminding myself that I can't please everyone and I can't worry about what everyone is going to think. Not everything has to be done the traditional way, and I am going to do what I feel is best for me. I just know I will have headaches down the road with bridesmaids, I know it. So I'm saving myself the heartache now! Thanks for everyone sharing your stories, it's nice to hear.

yeah..that was one of the things that got me too!! I couldn't believe it. I told Tim that that was one of the best times for pictures!! So..I said "then when DO you actually sign the license?" ( Not sure of the rest of the provinces in Canada, as I've only been married in BC, but I'm used to signing the registration at the ceremony, not a license!). Tim shrugs and says, "well, the day of the wedding. Usually before the ceremony, or sometime during the reception." So I figured, ok...then lets throw a little Canadian tradition, and still have a table set up and once the "you may now kiss the bride" part is said, we go sign the license if front of everyone! Yeesh how hard can that be. So I think he doesn't mind. I haven't quite yet talked to the minister yet, however, he's Tim's brother so I have an "in"...laughing.gif

JillA I think you made the right decision, its the decision I should have made before asking any of my friends. My friends here in Canada unfortunately said they could not afford it, and to be honest I don't think they fully support me moving to the U.S.A. As someone else said in another thread, I am already beginning to be their "last call." I can't say that I have "best friends" just alot of friends over the years, also what made it hard is I lived in the U.S while they were still in Canada. We ultimately decided on two attendants each. My MOH is my sister and the second is a friend from the U.S., who was is good friends with my fiance and I. His best man is his dad and his groomsman is his close friend from GA. Drama free!!

That's sweet!! I'm sorry, but I just really like that thought! I'm sure it's been done before, but I've never heard of it.

It's so important to always remember that a wedding is the bride and grooms...not everyone else's. And how you choose to get married is up to you! Legally, we didn't even NEED any attendants, because in SC it's only the minister, bride and groom that sign the license. (Here at home we needed witnesses). Actually, I sure found it interesting how weddings AREN'T the same all over...wow they do a few things different down South!!

In my first and second marriage I we only had one attendant each. Gee...doesn't that make me sound awful!! "my first and second marriage" I was real young in the first one, ended in divorce, but the second was death..so, maybe that doesn't count.

Anyways..we are having FOUR attendants each. Tim wanted it that way. Right. I hardly know anyone close enough that lives in SC to have! So, his sister will be my MOH, only because she's helped out so much already. She drove me around forever looking for the patterns and material. We got them when they were on sale, $.99 instead of $16, and the material was $2.99/yard. She's also making my dress.

The other 3 bridesmaids are coming from California, Alberta, and BC.!! *Whew*. I had the think of people that I knew could be there. *Actually there is one I'm a wee bit worried about...but I won't worry until closer to the wedding...LOL* Worst case scenario, I'll be one short. We'll still make it work.

Speaking of fathers..... since my daughter's father passed away when she was just little, she is having my father walk her down the aisle. (Hopefully, he is still with us, then, because he is getting on in age. sad.gif ) Is anyone else having someone other than their father walk them down the aisle? I'm just wondering what to do about protocol and stuff. Do I need to make a speech, or say a few words, that the father would have made? Or do I leave all that up to my Dad? Does anyone know? unsure.gif

My father won't be able to come to my wedding crying.gif , as because of his age, 82, and health problems he won't be able to get travel insurance, unless he wants to pay BIG bucks for it.

But my 23 year old son will be there, (he just got his passport recently) and he'll be the one walking me down the aisle. I felt it was more appropriate since we have such a good relationship and I'll be living so far away now. We both live in the same town here. He and his fiancee are looking forward to the trip. We're planning on taking them out to Myrtle Beach to one of the dinner shows there.

All this talk about wedding dresses makes me wonder, are you all planning on keeping your dresses? I know it's trendy to pay a fortune at the dry cleaners to get it cleaned and boxed in acid free materials and I've always wondered why. You don't wear it again and any daughters you have probably won't want to wear it.

The tradition in my family is totally different. We make the dress into christening gowns for our children. My grandmother made one out of Mom's dress for me. It's hand smocked and embroidered. If all goes as planned, it will be the dress our first child wears. I'll do the same with my dress for our second. It helps that I love sewing and embroidery.

~ Catherine

A friend of mine hung her dress up in her bedroom, from the ceiling. She did it like a half canopy over the bed. Hard to explain how it looks, but it was quite tasteful.

not sure what I'll do with mine. It won't look like a "wedding" gown, and it's lavender in colour, but I thought I may display it in the living room or something. With some pic's around it of course.

OK ladies, advice time! So for my dress, I am not wearing your 'traditional' wedding style dress, with pouf, bustle, or crinoline. I just like simple, so I was thinking I may not even need to go to a wedding dress store.... I found these 2 online which I totally pictured myself in, elegant and plain. I really like them both, and the price is way under what I was willing to spend! Which one do you like more? I think it has to be ordered online, but if it doesn't fit I can return it in person at the store.

Organza

Maybe you can use one or two real flowers in with the silk ones? When I made my bouquet I used a variety of silk flowers for the base of the bouquet, and then on the wedding day added in 6 large really lilies to create a 'fall'. It worked really really well. (Afterwards, my Dad took the lilies back with him to Canada to place on my mother's grave).

awww that's so touching!

Here i'll show you guys:

Apparently the roses wouldn't stand up like that for to long if they were real, which makes sense. The wedding kinda has a roses theme: my bouquet has all red roses with crystals, and then the bridesmaids have white roses with some red mixed in, so i thought rose centerpieces would top it off. I'm not making them myself, so I don't know how much creative input I would have, but I could ask about maybe making the white ones on the bottom real? I don't know... but I do really like it just the way it is. It has that modern, funky, dynamic, but simple look I wanted...

That is very pretty! Silk flowers look just like real ones now a days..you might be able to add a little spray to make them smell too...

ooopss I mean give off a scent!! wacko.gif

Me too, the cost was the main issue as to not having the wedding right away. I refuse to put anything on credit for my wedding, it's cash or nothing. If I can't afford it, I'm not buying it. Along with the immigration costs, we had to pay for the moving costs, plus me not working for awhile! So with the wedding being over a year away, plenty of time to save.

Our legal ceremony was low-key, at a JOP's home.... just us 2, and we went to the Cheesecake Factory after to celebrate laughing.gif

I would LOVE to do that...nice low key...just pay for license. Tim's brother is the Pastor of his Church..lol..so we won't need to pay for that..

Tim's never been married, so I won't take this away from him. It's going to be a big wedding...almost 300. ( Really hope they can't all make it..lol) Although, once the petition was approved, we knew when we could set the date, and he's been telling! His friends and family want to celebrate so much with him. I did mention a low key, and plan for something big later...um..nope. That's not how it's going to work...lol. So planning a big wedding from far away is a job and a half, but I think we'll be ready! blink.gif

Tim and I met in Hawaii in '06, and hopefully...if all goes well of course...lol..should be getting married this Sept. I don't know exactly what the cake will look like yet...but we're going to do a Hawaiian Luau for the reception! So I'm hoping to track down a cake topper of Hawaiian tourists!! LOL I'd like a palm tree, and probably pineapple on the cake somewhere...maybe tropical flower petals...the possibilities are endless here. I saw a web site out of Toronto of a company that does personalized toppers, and they did have one for Hawaii. The price of course kinda threw me for a loop..lol. Can't remember the site right now, I had Tim save it on his computer..lol.

We're also hoping to have a spot where guests can put their faces through a cut out of Hawaiian tourists, and have pictures taken!! Thought it would be a great little keepsake. Plus we're giving everyone a lei...although..they're the cheaper plastic kind.. whistling.gif We may order real ones for ourselves, direct from Hawaii. I would really suppose how busy an office usually is. Mines in Charleston, SC and I walked in at my appointed time; gave them my letter, etc...they took me in, had to fill out some form, then it was finger prints, and picture time! Simple stuff, but he did have to do my right thumb a couple of times. I really don't think I was in there that long, less than 1/2 hour. There were a few others, but I would say the place was really busy.

However I'm sure there are offices in the much bigger cities that would be different.

Wonder if you can call the place your going to and ask them what it's like? Maybe you can get in earlier?
TimandJoyceFemaleCanada2010-08-09 13:41:00
CanadaAOS'rs...

Thanks for asking Joyce :) It... went. LOL I started a separate thread to rant about it... haha In the end though, I finally got to mail in my RFE yesterday afternoon, and according to tracking info they received it today. So now it's back to being on pins and needles checking USCIS every day to find out if they accept it and approve me.. or... not.

Well I can certainly understand the pins and needles. If all they needed was the medical, (and you already know that was good) I would think everything else should be smooth sailing or you may have gotten an RFE along with the medical one. (my RFE was for two reasons)

I sure hope you hear GREAT news in the next couple weeks, if not sooner! :)

Ashen..how did the medical and all that go?
TimandJoyceFemaleCanada2010-08-05 14:19:00
CanadaAOS'rs...

What did you get the RFE for? I'm trying to get everything ready for the AOS and i want everything to be in order so i can avoid the RFE.. So you didn't get one for the medical, even if you didn't get it transcribed? That's good!

Well...mine was an unusual case. I get a survivors (death) benefit from Canada. So we included that as income, (which it kinda is) on the affidavit of support. Our RFE had to do with proving that I could work etc, which of course at that time I couldn't. So I waited for a letter from CPP to prove that I received that money and where it came from. Didn't realize I'd get RFE'd for it...I sent in the taxes to show where it came from..guess they didn't put two and two together...

However, it is good to know that if anyone DOES receive special benefits from Canada and will continue to do so for the rest of their life...then I strongly suggest to get a letter from them ahead of time. USCIS seemed to accept all that and approved my case. And the nice thing it adds to the yearly income, in case it seems "short".
TimandJoyceFemaleCanada2010-07-02 11:58:00
CanadaAOS'rs...

Hey guys,

When you sent in your AOS packet, did you send in a photocopy of your certified marriage certificate, or an original certified marriage certificate? I wonder if that's what the RFE is for....

Hi...I just sent a "copy" of the certified copy from the court house. I had an RFE too..thought it was for the medical, (I didn't get it transcribed) but it was something else. They didn't care about the medical part at all.

RFE's are awful. It would be nice if they give you and idea of what it's for so you could start getting ready. Mine showed up about a week after I got the email. They also give you a time frame as to when to send back the information, (mine was for 87 days). It only put me back about a month for approval as I had to wait for information from Canada, but I still got approved by about 3.5 months after sending in the original packet.

Best wishes! :)

GREEN CARD IN HAND!!!

Yay!! :) Congrats and have a wonderful trip.

I officially mailed off my aos package today via fedex. took a bit longer i expected but at least it's done now. OY, now i gotta figure out how to prove we live together :( no lease no utilities in laws are being..fussy. :(

I hope all goes smoothly for you. If you get transferred, you probably won't have to prove anything. However some things could include: Joint bank account; life insurance policies; cell phones on one account; extra credit card in your name on his account; both registered on the same vehicle. Just a couple ideas there.

I just got my AOS package in today as well hopefully it will be a quick smooth process *fingers crossed*. I didn't end up finding a civil surgeon that would just transcribe my vaccinations, but I did finally get a response from Dr. Seiden that the vaccination worksheet was inculded in the DO NOT OPEN medical package, so I sent it in with a similar letter as arabella did regarding not needing to have the I-693 if we has the overseas medical, so hopefully I will have no issues with that!!

Best wishes!! I'm sure all will be well.

Both my EAD and GC were approved recently but I have not received the cards in the mail.

Can I work now or do I have to have the actual cards?

You can't actually work, yet...but you can start looking. I'm sure the EAD if not the GC will show up soon, although now that they are making them "green" cards...might be a while for that. The EAD didn't change so at least you can start working.

AoS is really easy. It's RoC i'm told is the hard part

EEEeeeeek.... I haven't even "peeked" at any of the ROC paperwork....I hope it's not to bad....

The guide is regarding the I-485 package alone, so it says to only include the two photos.

The instructions for both the I-765 and the I-131 specific that you must include two photos per. That isn't to say that there haven't been those approved with only two (don't know), but the instructions on each form state to include them, which does make sense, as those two packages will be separated from the I-485 petition once USCIS receives it.

Exactly...also...look at the instruction for 13 and 14; it's for the EAD and AP...underneath says more information for documents AND photos...

This may be a stupid question, but I was wondering -- since I'm already approved for a Green Card but don't actually HAVE it in hand, would I still be able to travel to Portland to Vegas on a plane using my Canadian passport? I'm not too sure if I'll be getting it yet (I received a notification that it's being produced, but I don't know how long that is going to take) but since I'm only traveling in the US, would it be okay?

If your travelling only in the States, chances are you wouldn't need to show your passport, unless that is your only identification. Tim and I flew to Florida last month, and I showed my new SC DL. Which also meant I had my boarding passes in my married name.

When we go to Canada later this fall, my boarding passes will be in the name my passport is in. Thankfully, I renew it next Apr...so it will be in my new name then :)

Yeah Arabella, I didn't send one in either..just the sheet they gave me at the time of my medical. I didn't get an RFE, and my case was transferred. I would send that in as is. I would also check around for Civil Surgeons, and find one that understand what you need to do...just in case. That way IF you get RFE'd or IF there is an interview, you'll know exactly where to go to get it done.

Approved today at interview.
My appointment was at 1pm. We got there at around 12:20pm and we weren't called until 1:45pm! Good old LA.
Just asked some simple questions and reviewed the content in my package.
Looked at our photos, that's it. Didn't keep any evidence.
We didn't have any joint anything, which he was iffy about but we still made it.
Interview was 30 minutes long.

No more USCIS until February 2012 wee :D

Congrats Rhianne!! :) Glad to know you can relax a bit now....

Congrats Rhiann.

My interview was very strange. He kept asking us random questions like what kind of cars we drove and what we liked to cook. We showed him photos from last year and from our wedding. I was not told at the end if I was approved or not.

Those questions do sound strange. Probably just to make sure you're both living in the same house. I'm sure you'll hear good news soon.

Actually, to be honest, I'm having a hard time believing I get to be done with USCIS for awhile.

I guess it'll feel more real when I have it in my hands.

I know how you feel about that. It became real to me when I saw that expiration date for 2012! But I hope to have ROC sent in before the end of the year 2011.

OMFG
So, allow me to diffuse the myth that no one in California gets transferred to CSC, cause OMFG I JUST DID!! HOLLAAAAH!!!!

(hopefully it doesn't delay my case, but regardless, I don't care if it does, cause it means I don't have to drive 2 hrs into L.A. for an interview! LOL)

Congrats!!! The majority of transfers usually get notice about a month after wards. Course some have taken longer... Hope you hear something much sooner than that, though! :)

Card production ordered.

Awesome!! Isn't it nice to relax for a bit?

argh..so will be a month before i can file for AOS..the clerk at the county office told us we are not allowed to hand bring in our marriage licence, in order to get our certificate..it has to be mailed and will take a minimum of 3 weeks to get it. /sigh. so 15$ for the first copy and 4$ for each there after..i'm going to need what..like 5 for aos ead etc? or can i just use copies of the original?

Wow...really makes me glad I got married in SC! Although we were gone for 3 weeks after the wedding anyways..I know that that probate judge would have gotten back the two they needed for the office a day after it was mailed to them. We also got to keep one, but it's not certified.

When I went to get a certified copy...(only $5) I got only ONE copy..then I copied the certified copy..*does that make sense*...I attached a copy to AOS, EAD and AP...can't remember if I said it was a copy or not on the cover letter. Anyways...all has been fine...got transferred to CSC...got my GC..no RFE for the original. I still have the certified copy, and I will continue to copy that, until I'm told otherwise...

Interview. Lovely.
I didnt want to put myself on my husband's bills until I could change my name on my SSN but they wont let me... so I have to do it in my maiden name then change it all.
This'll be fun.

It's on May 5th at 1pm.

That's strange.. Just having the marriage license isn't enough proof that your name changed? I'm sure everything will work out for you. Glad to hear you got your interview and now you know they didn't forget about you.
