CanadaHow did YOU find out about VJ?
QUOTE (BermyCat @ May 26 2009, 10:43 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
We found it on Google also.

Now I tell anyone I meet that's engaged to an American to check this site out.

~ Catherine

I do too. After Tim and I were engaged, and I told folks up here I was moving to the States, all the horror stories came out. "Well, I know someone, married an American, she can't get her green card"...etc. So I dig a little to the story, found out they did it completely wrong. I think that a lot of Canadian/Americans don't think immigration because we've never had problems between the two countries. We don't need a visa to go visit, and we can be there longer than other countries. Plus, years ago, all this wasn't needed. You married an American, and it didn't matter which country you lived in. Simple. Things have changed so much over the years, and a lot of people don't know that yet.

CanadaHow did YOU find out about VJ?
I wish I had found VJ long before Tim asked me to marry him!! laughing.gif Even before I went to see him for the first time, (after meeting him in Hawaii in '06) I had looked into immigration. I figured, if we're seeing whether or not we "click" then I might as well see what we're up against!! I knew enough to know neither one of us could just cross the border and say "I'm here!!" I found a site that explained what to put in a K-1 package, but that was it. Didn't mention the interview or what to expect. blink.gif After Tim asked me to marry him, I explained what I found out, and we put the files together, and sent them off. I was looking for more information when I came across......VJ!!! I, too, was a "guest" for several days before I joined. I had a few questions here and there, (probably still do!), and I've found this site to be so helpful!! So far, we've done all of it ourselves, and the first part's almost over, with the interview coming up in June!!

I'm sure I'll be reading tons of AOS threads later in October. We're planning a middle Sept. wedding, and a two week road trip honeymoon. Perhaps we'll come home quickly to send off the files, and then go back on the road!!

So, as an American, my wonderful Canadian SO has told his family what my family eats as a snack on Christmas day and, according to him, they all say "yuck" and how can we stand to mix those "tastes". So, here's my chance to find out if he & his family is weird or if this is truly an "American" thing... like poutine is "Canadian".

Yummy!! Poutine!!! I love it. I haven't looked properly through the deli/cheese sections of the grocery stores in SC yet, but if I come across something I can use as cheese curds....*slurping at the thought of it*... tongue.gif

Hmmmm not sure I have weird food combinations or not. Guess I'll find out when I move!! LOL. I know Tim wondered why I ordered gravy with my burger and fries. I also like to put an egg with my burgers. Not sure that's too unusual.
TimandJoyceFemaleCanada2009-05-25 23:32:00
CanadaHow long after your approval did you move to the states?
I guess that unless one doesn't really have a "lot" to do after getting the visa, like they have no debt, don't need to sell a place, etc., then moving within a week isn't that bad. But most people need that little extra time.

My interview isn't coming until June. But we've set the wedding for Sept. to also allow time "in case" If the consulate needs more info or something, hopefully the visa would only be delayed 2-4 weeks. I plan on moving Aug. 18th. I, too, need to sell my home, and my boss already knows I'll be working until the 15th of Aug.

*Course..this is if all goes smooth at the interview...lol...* happy.gif

Just out of curiosity, what about echinacea? If I use it at the slightest point of a cold, sore throat, stuff nose, etc, it never develops into anything. CanadaAfter you have filed the K1
Welcome to VJ!! You have a great Canadian coming to be your wife!! ( Hee hee, I only say that cause I'm from BC too!!)

You've received the right answers already, and although I will tell you the time between NOA1 and the NOA2 varies, ( ours took 3.5 months), you may also want to check to see whether or not your State requires a SSN to register for the marriage license. That way, she'll know when she needs to move once she has her visa. I'll be moving to SC and will need it, so I'm moving a month before hand. (doesn't take that long to get it, just other factors cause me to move that far in advance.... wacko.gif not my choice!)

Best wishes for a speedy journey, and don't hesitate to read through the threads, as well as in the Canada forum. There is some great information here. I've learned a lot that I wasn't aware of.

I'll text you my new number to have. Thanks for the well wishes.

So my fiancé took me to this really nice little historic area, and we had dinner tonight at this little cozy restaurant in a Historic restored Century home. It was recommended to us by one of his good friends...well it was our official 'I've arrived' dinner/date. My mom watched my son. So we had a great time, in the end, the owner brings out a dessert plate that has a pastry in it, and written in chocolate on the plate it says 'Welcome to America' we were wondering how he knew?!?!? He then said that my fiancés friend, called the restaraunt, and told them to do that....plus gave his card over the phone and paid for our entire dinner!!!!! I was so shocked! It was really sweet of him!

I felt like such an immigrant! Or should I say, not even! A 'non' immigrant! Haha!

That's so nice!! What a great welcome!!

About the Clipper subject, I used to take that from Victoria to Seattle quite often during the immigration process since I found I got hassled there alot less.
Before you board the Clipper in Vic, there will be a US customs agent standing there (when I last went through, they didn't even have a desk, the officer just checked people's passports one by one as you walk by.) Easy day.
On the Clipper, you can have breakfast or lunch if you want, but I always found them overpriced and not tasty enough to bother. Breakfast will usually be a bagel with a cream cheese, a wheel of cheese on the side, juice and some gummy snacks lol.
DO take the dramomine (not sure if I spelled it right, but it's basically Gravol,) if you or your SO are prone to motion sickness. They offer it onboard, and it's only 50 cents or something like that. They also have a duty free magazine on there, just like airlines, and you can purchase alcohol, etc for a cheaper price.

After you arrive in Seattle, you'll go through a more thorough customs inspection, much like you do at the airports. If you're heading to the airport right from the Clipper terminal in Seattle, there will be taxis lining up and fighting each other basically to take you there, hehe. Last time I went it was $30 or so, and if you haven't been in Seattle traffic yet, Kriket, snap your seatbelt on tight, those Seattle cab drivers are craaazy!
All in all, the Clipper is a pretty relaxing, fun ride, and I think you'll enjoy it.
PS-If you have extra room in your suitcase, do you mind stowing me? I miss Victoria! crying.gif

Wow. Great information, Misty. Thank you. smile.gif

I just took a look at the Clipper site. They don't take cars. sad.gif Any recommendations on who does?

That is true about the Clipper!! Don't order food!! Way to pricey...

The first immigration you pass is through ask's where you're going...when you'll be back..that sort of thing, then you do the same thing in Seattle...strange I know. Because on the return, you only go through it once, AND with the Canada customs card!! ( you don't fill one out on the way to the US..)

And your right, it's passenger only. You can get the Black Ball, but it goes to Port Angeles. You basically catch it around the same area as the Clipper, down by Victoria's harbour!

I'm glad your sightseeing Poprocks!! We did hijack this thread somewhat...Sorry!! Hope you're having a great time!!

Not entirely sure when they got "overwhelmed" with applications. My son sent in his at the beginning of May, and got the passport last week!! His was shorter than mine, and I got mine in '06, when I really didn't need one at all, (but thought it might be a good thing to have).

Figured there would be a grace period. There always is. However, it will, like always, close, and hopefully people will be ready for that, or they just won't be travelling. I'm making sure that anyone coming from Canada to my wedding has one.

sweet that clears up the police check question now just hope if someone knows on the other question about bringing the copy of I-129F with me to interview.

I brought a copy of mine with me because I wanted to be over prepared rather than possibly put on the spot being asked about something for which I had no back-up. I wasn't asked for anything besides the standard forms and evidence that are on the interview list, but I would always err on the side of caution, because the consequences of not having something they want to see would be way too frustrating for me.

So true!! I can't remember the pic's I used for the petition, so I'm bringing them again!! Actually, our files included every trip we did, (quite a few)and pic's; emails, boarding passed, and credit card receipts from each trip. Little did I know at that time, we could have just used one of them! laughing.gif So there's only been one more time that Tim and I have seen each other since the initial filing. So I'll bring that evidence, plus the emails, and such, the chat history on skype, plus as much detail of our up coming wedding as possible.

CanadaGot a Teeny-Tiny Job!
QUOTE (LDora @ Jun 4 2009, 06:46 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
For the past six months or so, I have been reviewing computer games on a website for fun. They recently asked me to handle a weekly column, which I agreed to. I never asked for money, both because at the time I was unable to work legally in the US while I waited for my AoS, and because it honestly never occurred to me.

Today I got an e-mail from the site owner, and my editor, asking about my Greencard. When I informed him that yes, indeed, it DID mean I was able to work now, he said, "Well, then it's about time! I've been wanting to hire you officially and compensate you for a while now."

So now here I sit filling out tax forms and signing a contract to send to him. The contract is very plain and small, just states that I agree to write a minimum of three articles a month (I already do four just with my column, and do a lot of additional reviews every month too) and get paid thirty-five dollars apiece. Is it a lot of money? No, but that's not the point. I'm getting paid to do something I love, and even if it's just a few extra hundred dollars a month, it definitely helps out my husband and I. It's extra cash we can use as "play money", and gives us some breathing room.

It feels a little weird, because writing is something I've always loved, but never anything I'd really considered for a job. Heck, before I moved down here I managed a bakery for two years, and I always sort of assumed I'd wind up doing something similar.

Hope this isn't in the wrong place, I just wanted to share and remind everyone looking for work to keep your options open because sometimes work finds you when you least expect it.

That's great!! I know what you mean about thinking that you'll wind up with something similar. I work for Curves for Women ( a job I love!!) and when I was in SC in April, the girl there asked if I was hoping to still work for the company. I told her I wouldn't be able to legally work for a while and she said, well, just bring in your resume, cause you just never know these things. But who knows..some other door just may open for me.

Joyce, I should explain about the credit cards. I did not apply with a US address. You should apply BEFORE you move to the US. Use your Canadian address and SIN. You will get approved, then after you move and get a SSN, you call to trans the card. Your chances of being approved as a Canadian are way higher.

I got my Amex that way. And applied for Macys the day I came over....technically as if that morning, I was resusibg in Canada LOL!

I'm gonna try for one last card before I start opening up bank accounts etc...and establishing myself with a US address and credit history.

Thanks for the tip. Technically, I won't be living at Tim's house till after we're married, so would that mean I don't have a US address laughing.gif

I'm wondering, if Tim added me to his credit card account if it would help with credit? I'll be keeping my account open here in Canada anyways, and probably keep my visa although the exchange will be hard. I'm talking to my banker soon anyways. Maybe he'll have some suggestions.

I'll see what kind of card I can apply for before moving. No doubt they have online applications.

Sorry you've had such a rough start!! But wow..you're in Florida!!! How cool is that?? Oh..guess it's warm right now.

Sounds like you're smiling through all this, and that's good. Yeah, the credit thing sucks!! I've never tried my card at the gas stations, however the same thing happened to me in New York. Guess the only way you can access money is through a ATM but the fees are awful!! You don't want to know. Debit cards will work, I got money through one in San Fransisco with my card.

I think you should be able to get the card within your schedule. I doubt they can give you a number when you ask as they have to verify the immigration information is in the SAVE system and the person to whom you give your application doesn't do that - someone else does. I was told on my first visit one week after arrival that I was not eligible. I went back the following week with all of the documentation to show that K-1s are indeed eligible and they accepted my application. My SSN arrived in the mail 10 days later. I was one of the lucky ones - it didn't have any restrictions stamped on it.

blush.gif exactly what paper work is that? I have to have one anyways, as SC requires it for registering for the marriage license. I'll be moving down a month before the wedding, so I should be ok at receiving it in time, as long as there are no hitches. laughing.gif Its okay, one can never have enough coffee during this process! I wonder why Vancouver stopped using the DS-160 even though on their website it says they use it, even though its not included in Packet 3....

Good question. I have a feeling I may be a little too nervous during my interview to ask them though!

Oh my, coming up...June 23rd!!

How Strange. I got my instructions, for the Vancouver Consulate, in early May, telling me where to go on the website, to fill out my forms and 156 and 156K are on them of what to bring. This was the revised 05/06/09 forms. No mention of the ds-230. I'm going to guess that my instruction where sent out before the change? My interview is soon, and with no contact as to fill out the new form. I'll fill out the ones from the list and hope they're happy!! unsure.gif

I am confused TimandJoyce, did you fax back the DS-230 Part I to receive your interview date as it says in Step 1 of Packet 3? There is also the Part II of the DS-230 which I brought to the interview in case, and they took it, but I cannot remember if they made me sign that form when they collected my documents. I think there was two forms to sign in front of the person who collects the documents but which ones I cannot remember. I brought a copy of the DS-230 Part II, DS-156 (2 copies printed off) and the DS-156K to the interview.

Edit: Vancouver does not use the online DS-160, just the DS-156 and DS-156K

Ugh!! Now I understand your confusion!! Apparently I hadn't enough coffee yet!! I meant DS-160!!! Yeeshhh wacko.gif

No, I didn't get the date because of that. I did fax off part one only of DS-230, and like yourself, bring part two with me, just in case. I got my appointment after faxing off the checklist, except of course, my medical is the next day, and they are aware of that. (I'm bringing the emails to show that too!) I had heard that Vancouver was booked up all of June, so I faxed the check list in early May. I was so happy to see a June 23rd date!! Maybe because I put intended date of marriage as Sept. 5th. (even though it's gotten changed since then)

wow I did a lot more printing off of things tonight, pics; forms, etc. I think I'm going to be ready for this!! happy.gif Waiting for Tim to send up some goodies for me...you know..the support issue.

I left another note in the Vancouver interview thread, if anyone can answer. I'm curious about the "self supporting" part of the evidence of support.
