CanadaLiving in Vancouver but Packet 3 came from Montreal
That's strange...why on earth would it come from Monteal? If I remember correctly, there was a spot on the I-129F that listed the closest consult. ( I think it was that one, I know it was asked somewhere) I'm from the Island and I'm sure Vancouver was put down.

I hope it gets worked out for you quickly. Only makes sense for you to have your medical and interview there.

CanadaGeneral Consensus on Interviews and approvals in Canada
My passport only has two stamps. Maybe because I generally take the Clipper ferry out of Victoria, to Seattle and fly from there. So much cheaper to fly from State to State. Although, I did find a good deal from Orlando back to Victoria.

My interview is months away yet...and I'm nervous!! I'll pass the medical and police check with flying colours, but after that.... blink.gif

CanadaGeneral Consensus on Interviews and approvals in Canada
I can appreciate what you're saying!! I too am worried because well, you just don't know what's going to happen. And Tim's more confident than me too!!

As long as all the criteria is met, there won't be a problem.

My hopes was that coming from Canada, approvals "may" be a little quicker, but that doesn't necessarily mean so. So now I'm hoping that it will be approved in 4-5 months, so hopefully in April or May, we'll hear something, ( been two months already), and that in June, I'll have the interview.

Best wishes for your journey! star_smile.gif

CanadaFlying with dogs
Thanks everybody for your great advice! I'm glad to know she won't be quarantined! She's a very healthy dog, and I'll be sure to have all her shots updated before I move.

I'll contact the airlines listed that would take her, and ask about night flying. I figured it would be a lot cooler if we went that way, and landing would be early enough in the morning it shouldn't be too warm yet. * she's guessing here*. I'm sure some company would fly her!

Thanks again!!

CanadaFlying with dogs
I deeply apologize if this topic is floating around somewhere, but I couldn't find what I was looking for.

My dog is a medium sized, so I know she'd have to go into cargo. Also, I'll be moving to SC, so driving is out. I'm hoping that maybe someone else flew with a larger dog, and how that went. I need to know which airlines take them, and the rules and regulations after we arrive. I've heard she'd need to go into quarantine for a month. I'd also make sure her shots were up to date, and I know she's healthy enough for flying. It probably won't be until summer, so I thought that if I could find a red eye, and non stop it would help with her confusion. I would be coming from Vancouver Island and at this point, I'm not sure if I'll fly off the Island and transfer or take the Clipper ferry from Victoria to Seattle and fly from there... helpsmilie.gif

Thanks!

CanadaWhat's your favorite restaurant in USA ?
Outback Steakhouse!! Chili's!! ummmmm don't have too much explorations with restaurants yet. But I know I like those two. The steak I had at Outback melted in my mouth!! That was in Seattle, but I'm pretty sure they're all over. We also went to one in California called AJ Spurs. Good food and service, and very interesting decor!! But I'm not too sure if that's located all through the States or not.

CanadaThe loonie's demise
Well, I'm not living in the States yet, still a few months to go before that happens so I do hope the dollar will improve by then. However, I am leaving for an extended holiday. I'm going to NYC, and flying out of JFK to Greece at the end of March. The tour package was in US $$ when I registered but I didn't realize where the exchange was at that time. OUCH!! Cost me over $700 more than what the Americans are paying!! Plus, it hadn't included the airport taxes at the time and they're $450 US! Of course, I'm touring NYC for a few days before hand, cause I'm there anyway!! LOL

I'll be heading to SC for the rest of April, so that Tim and I can make as many wedding plans as we can, ( without an actual date) but I know we'll be able to organize a lot! So really, this month and a half is going to be expensive! Glad I have a visa card!! laughing.gif

His oldest sister and her family live on Denman Island, one of the northern Gulf Islands. HIs parents moved there after they retired.

Cool info. about Denman: (stolen from wikipedia)

Denman and Hornby Islands are two outposts that have been described, with some justification, as the "undiscovered Gulf Islands." Big-name celebrities have recently bought property here, complementing a population made up of baby-boomers, artists, craftspeople and a laid-back (if wary) mishmash of alternative types.

I'm from Vancouver Island! Comox Valley actually. Apart from a few years living in Victoria, I've been here all my life. Denman and Hornby Islands have some unique places. Tribune bay for one. I haven't been there in years but it would be great to go back. Also, it's amazing the local artists we have around here, with those two Islands included. We have art festivals, and shops that sell local pieces. The Comox Glacier is right in our back yard. You can see it from just about everywhere here. Beautiful mountains surround us, as well as many views of the ocean.

I'm moving to SC...100 miles inland from the coast. No mountains to see, no ocean to look at. But none the less, SC has a beauty all it's own. I'm looking forward to moving there... smile.gif

CanadaHow did everyone meet their american/canadian significant others?
Tim and I belong to the same church, and every year the Single Adult Ministry organizes trips because no one likes to travel alone! ( well, I guess some do). In 2006, I was just entering my second year as a widow, and the trip was to Hawaii, so I felt it was time to do something fun for me! I did not go with any intentions of meeting someone. The last thing I wanted was to get involved in a relationship.

Tim was on that trip too. We actually didn't really talk with each other until the day before we all left for home. In all, we had about 3 conversations, all about 10 to 15 minutes long. And there was no spark, no chemistry, no singing Angels. However, I did feel that he was the most down to earth, genuine man I had ever met, and I wished I had talked to him more during the week. When we got home, we emailed each other a little, just general small talk, and a few jokes, and my only desire was to build up a friendship with him. The emails, lead to chatting on MSN and Yahoo, to phone calls....to him inviting me down to SC. By this time we both knew it was because we had developed an attraction to each other and wanted to see if there was anything more than friendship. As we had already physically met, I felt safe to fly down to see him. I knew he wouldn't let anything happen to me. That trip lead to him coming up to Vancouver Island to see me, ( his first visit to Canada) and another one later that year to spend Thanksgiving with him and his family. ( They deep fry turkeys in the South!!) More trips the following year, and last October, in Orlando, he asked me to marry him. So now this wonderful world of "hurry up and wait" with the government has become part of our lives! blink.gif That's ok...I know that there will be a happy ending... star_smile.gif

I need to find that link--as I gave step by step instructions on how to do it! It is very easy, pretty much no different then signing up for any other account, just follow thier instructions. You have to send in prrof of ID a photo copy of 2 pieces of ID (maybe it is 3??) u can either mail it in, fax it in, scan and secure email it in! Plus you have to mail in your banks info the same way! I will look in a bit for that post, but its not difficult to do! i walked by their main office in downtown Victoria many times! Staff is super professional, even managed to chat hockey on 1 call! takes a few days to set up. Once ur all set up a transaction takes between 3-4 business days to go through. if ya go Electronically (EFT) it is FREE. They do offer a wire service which is faster, but costs $$. And when ur making a transaction, its almost like ur in vegas! As you can see the rate they are going to give you, so you can either 1) accept it 2) say nope and cancel it or 3) hit the reset button (which is by the rate) and the rate may go up, down or stay the same, lol! Its not a huge change, but depending on how much $$ ur transferring it can make a difference. So even after ur done, ur always asking urself, should I have waited? lol Never had 1 problem with them! back in February, i added another account to be associated with CH, so you have to send them the info--then they have to verify info with the bank---they send them a fax requesting info. But it was taking awhile, so CH said, lets do a 3 way call with ur bank! CH set it up, and fixed the problem. They went totally out of their way and paid the long dist charges, lol they rock!!

Wow!! There's an office on the Island?? That Victoria?? Wish I could set up before I move, I'm only 3 hours from there! Oh well. Thanks so much for this info!! Just one of the many links I'm adding to my favourites before moving, which won't be until middle of August. I hope to get an account set up asap after I move. I need a SSN to get married anyways, so I'll set up an account then too, and get going with this. Wow...those first few days are going to be busy!! lol....

I thank you, kcoyclay1, for your sensitivity and understanding.

Well, it is almost time. In a few hours I will be picking up Sean from the airport. It will be the first time we've seen each other in three weeks, and the first time we've spoken to each other in days. I have no idea what is going to happen, but will stay positive and try to work it out until we can't.

I want to thank you all for your advice and help, with the exception of that one person who views this thread as a soap opera and thinks it's fun to ridicule people such as myself. Do not worry. Beginning Wednesday (our first appointment), I plan on keeping any personal or intimate details of my marital relationship between myself and my therapist. I feel that ridiculing me for my "spectacle" is especially uncalled for because I am actually taking the advice offered here and am trying to fix this situation - hence, the therapy appointment and my trying to keep a positive attitude when I see Sean again. I could understand why I would be made fun of if I were just bitching and moaning without taking any action, but that is not the case.

It is rude and incorrect to invariably categorize anyone who posts something that is personal/intimate as some sort of drama queen. Life is unpredictable and full of surprises, and we all need a little help along the way from time to time and to gain a new perspective. And how is one to even understand a situation if no personal details are shared? I imagine I'd have a very hard time reaching out and asking for help without using personal detail to describe my situation to others.

I hope that Sean and I are able to work things out and come out of this with a better understanding of each other and our marriage. Despite it all, I still think that Sean is a really neat guy and I kind of wish you all knew him. Maybe someday he'll sign up for VJ and share some of his experiences immigrating from Canada to the U.S. And who knows? Maybe I'll be in the position one day to be able to help out someone on these forums who is having a rough time with his or her marriage and feels completely lost and hopeless and does not know where to turn.

I plan on making one more post as a follow-up, and then I may actually take a break from VJ for a while. It makes sense, in a practical manner, because Sean and I aren't actually doing any sort of paperwork right now and won't be for almost two years, if we stay together. Plus, I really need to be focusing energy on my self-improvement and our marriage anyway, so I shouldn't spend as much time on the internet as I do, heh.

I look forward to updating you one more time realy soon. Thank you again for your honesty, advice, and compassion.

Best wishes CRH. I pray everything go well for you from this day forward.....

Another thing to consider is that he may be so protective of you , not being able to give you the support you need is very frustrating to him right now. He is probably more frustrated and angry at the situation than at you- it's just manifesting as angry/hurtful words towards you.

Now I'm not a counselor by any stretch of the imagination, but this was one of the first things I thought of! Men think sooooo differently from women..and sometimes, we tend to forget that. Perhaps he's feeling like he let you down. He didn't protect you back then. I'm just grasping at straws...I have NO idea what he's feeling or thinking, but most men that love their wives would do anything to protect them. He's dealing with it in his way, and that may not be how you would. I could be wrong about it, you won't know until you talk with him. Let him finish out his week. He needs time too.

What the others have said about relationships, and commitments, and growth, I applaud!! Much wisdom. I'm sure anyone of them won't mind if you PM them to keep contact going. Counseling, or books, are a good choice. And when the time is right, you can introduce him to it. Just let him know that you are doing this FOR YOU!! Ok? He just may feel that he'd like to learn with you for support.

((((((((((((((((Hugs))))))))))))))) to you Ruby....you're not alone.

You'll really have no choice if you want the visa. You will have enough notice as to when your interview at the consulate will be, so you should be able to adjust your schedule at work. I told my boss what I'm doing and when we got the approval in April, I said to her that I'll probably end up with an interview in June. ( it's on the 23rd, in Vancouver, B.C.) Ask those that went to Montreal how long between NOA2 and the interview.

Can't answer about the pets. I hope you can bring them. You should be able to find that info online though. Just google taking pets to the US? unsure.gif

QUOTE (SirJon @ May 21 2009, 08:16 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The anonymity of the internet allows people to be different if they want to. Those who would normally never say boo to a goose when around people suddenly have the ability to be vitriolic without any real comeback. If they don't like what comes back to them, all they have to do is click the mouse and it goes away. It's hard for that to happen in real life.

I can think of many examples of real life and internet life personas being poles apart.

These are my first thoughts when it comes to the internet. You can be whomever you want to be, if you feel you'll never meet that person. I know that a lot of couples meet online, through all sorts of ways. And then they meet in person...very different. A couple women I know met their husbands through different sites, but it certainly wasn't the first, or second man they went to see. It took meeting more than one. So I guess they were "impressive" at first...till they met face to face.

I find for myself too, that it's VERY difficult to explain yourself online. You can't hear the tone of voice, and it's hard to express in the written word as opposed to speaking. I try to be the same person here, as I would be if you actually met me. I think that for the most part, those on this site are themselves, as much as they can be considering the hindrance of the internet. Depending on what's being said, you can't see the smile on their face if they're just trying to "tease" and not "push buttons" does that make sense?

Winners home stores are Home Sense. Can't remember the one for TJ Maxx. Those are the things I go for mostly, but I found a real nice skirt at TJ last month, that I don't usually find at Winners. Let me give you guys a heads up before you leave. Aldo and Lululemon are cheaper in canada. Do not buy alot of clothes before you leave. Things are wayyyyyyyy cheaper here. Also, if you like macys you can bring your Canadian ID and they give you this card (valid for 6 days) that gives you11% off for being a visitor. Dont worry, they wont remember who you are lol i get a card once a month ahahahah.

Also, Ross will become your new best friend. Its like winners but with garage sale prices.

True about Macy's!! However, when I was in NYC, they gave me a "special" discount of 11% that was good for a month!! That's because I was out of country, not just state. So maybe it changes when you live there? Don't tell them you moved? laughing.gif

I think they sometimes view chips as a french-fry substitute or something. In England they often put chips in sandwiches and/or eat them on the side as part of the meal too. I see lots of people in teh US eating chips as part of their meals as if they are a food group. Wierd!

Won't be a major food group when I move into Tim's house!! laughing.gif

I'm not sure if I've heard of the "chips in the sandwich" before. Guess it's just like when Tim looked at me funny when I ordered gravy for my fries!! jest.gif

CanadaDriving in California - A warning to all you non-resident newlyweds.
Hope everything works out for you! Tim is good friends with one of the city cops, and when I met him we talked about licenses, that I'd have to do my test and all...he says to me...."Nahhhh don't go through all that...if you get stopped, tell 'em you've only been here 3 days!"....laughing.gif Course...he WAS only kidding!!!

I drove while I was down there in April, as I was just a visitor. Not sure I'll drive until I have a state license.

CanadaA Happy Ending
Such wonderful news CRH!!!! I'm so happy for you both. Keep on the right track!! I'm sorry that I too won't be in Texas, ( actually not even living in the States yet...lol) but I know that your husband will soon find friends.

One thing I talked with Tim when he asked me to marry him is that I knew at some point I probably will get very emotionally homesick. And when that happens, I'm going to need his understanding. He has a great family, and I've made friends there already, but I know it will take some time to properly adjust.

Best wishes for you and your husband. good.gif

What is the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?

someone told me yesterday.. Memorial day is for the dead veterans and Veterans Day is for the living vets.

That is interesting. I always thought it was the same because Veterans Day is Nov. 11, same as Remembrance Day. And we honour living as well as dead. "Lest we never forget"...

Well that's good, that you aren't offended that is.

I never noticed this in Canada - which is not to say there was never a remembrance day sale, I just don't remember one - i'm only talking about Calgary of course.

Not sure I ever noticed "Remembrance Day" sales either. Maybe I just didn't read the flyers. I know that here in town they do a parade, and a service, and a time of silence at 11:00 a.m. Actually, there are now very few vets here. I often wonder what will happen when there are no more.... mellow.gif

CanadaHow did YOU find out about VJ?
QUOTE (BermyCat @ May 26 2009, 10:43 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
We found it on Google also.

Now I tell anyone I meet that's engaged to an American to check this site out.

~ Catherine

I do too. After Tim and I were engaged, and I told folks up here I was moving to the States, all the horror stories came out. "Well, I know someone, married an American, she can't get her green card"...etc. So I dig a little to the story, found out they did it completely wrong. I think that a lot of Canadian/Americans don't think immigration because we've never had problems between the two countries. We don't need a visa to go visit, and we can be there longer than other countries. Plus, years ago, all this wasn't needed. You married an American, and it didn't matter which country you lived in. Simple. Things have changed so much over the years, and a lot of people don't know that yet.
