CanadaWearing shoes in the house?
For sure I take them off!! However, when I go to a house, and the floors don't look "clean" well, then I'll leave them on. I have also left them on in my house, but only cause I knew I was in quick, and out the door again. I can't stand wearing shoes all day!! I really like going barefoot.

And yes, shoes on in a house is a little more Americanized. laughing.gif I work at Curves for women and a couple years ago, we had a gal from California come up for the summer as she and her husband were camping nearby. I just loved her. She was so funny!! The subject of shoes came up, and she said "I can see why you need to take them off!! You all have so much more DIRT up here!!" rofl.gif She told me she never had to sweep out her camper as much as when she was here! Oh, how I loved that!

I'm not going to be too upset when I have company in my new home and shoes are still on the feet. After all, I'm in their territory. Who am I to try and change what everyone is used to. Who knows? Maybe my example will catch on? ... whistling.gif

Congratulations!!!!

If you're talking about originals and such for the interview part, I had the original death certificate, and my long form birth certificate, and they just made certified copies at the consulate and gave me back the originals. This was Vancouver, however, and I'm k-1 so I'm really not sure if that's different or not... wacko.gif just trying to save you a step or two.

Best wishes for a speedy and painless end to your journey!! 3 months is quick! Ours was 3.5 and a couple months till the interview. 6 months. I can handle that... biggrin.gif

Always do things on the safe side ... sign everything ... they sent our whole application back to us because they thought one of the G-325A pages was a photo copy. I'm darn sure it wasnt but when we help up our copy and the one we sent we couldn't tell which one was copied or not.... so we redid it all in blue ink ...

Tip #2

Keep your patience in check .... the waiting is the hardest part and can wear on some people. and th wait for the K-1 for my wife and I was the hardest part we went thru so far ..the rest after was a breeze so far

Isn't that the truth!? I did tell Tim right away, before we filed, that this will cause us to have emotional times. It's very stressful, and can put your relationship to the test!! People can act and say things under stress that usually are not like them at all. So it's real important to remember that. He and I get along so well, but in the couple weeks leading up to the interview, (longest weeks of my life if you ask me!) there were a couple times that our conversations weren't exactly, "smooth". We've never had a disagreement or fight yet, but wow, sure came close to losing it then. Course, then the interview went so well, I felt bad for doubting!! (big part of the cause of things..lol)

Just to remind you, all four copies of the forms are needed. Any snail mail will help to, but really a lot of that is secondary evidence. If you don't have everything they suggest, don't worry. Best wishes for you journey. star_smile.gif

laughing.gif I suppose that would work if you had to mow it everyday!

But what about gardening? Even if it's small, or in containers? Do you have room to do that? Where you are now, is that were you'll be for a while? If so, how about rearranging things around, or add some colour here or there. Make it yours too. What do you like to do. Sew? Scrapbook? You said you were going to school. What can you learn online, for free? What do you live close by? Parks, etc? How about going down and being your friendly self, meet people. You'll be in a nice safe area. You don't have a car, but what about transit? It's not always the best, but you can learn the routes. And let your finance know how you feel, he just may have some suggestions. And yes, it was mentioned, enjoy the break. I know that's one of the things I'm so looking forward to! Sorry you're going through this transition, but once you feel like your home, you'll enjoy it.

I came on a CR-I visa and there is not I-94. It is an immigration visa as we were already married. Oh btw my suitcase I paid $20.00 for didnt make the connection in Dencer so they had to sent it to out house in Hawthorne. It isn't very far from the airport.

Janet

Right. I think I realized that after I posted that you wouldn't get one. I'm pretty sure I will when I cross. Now I'm just in the figuring out stage of how and when to send down my belongings since I can't without a copy of the I-94. I really don't feel I warrant a moving company, ie: the relocubes, as I don't have much at all, just a few boxes. Kinda hoping I can give money to my sister, and a letter of authorization, and have her send them down after. wacko.gif

Good news though...I accepted an offer on my house!! So glad I have that as an asset! The CO was satisfied with that as Tim falls short of the 125% he needed. We got the visa on assets alone and no co sponsor!

Glad you got your suitcase!! I'm going with two this time, as I want as many clothes with me when I move.

Check with your air carrier. Different airlines have different allowances. Southwest will allow for a laptop and bag, plus an extra carry-on. They also let you have two pieces of checked luggage up to 50 lbs. I heart.gif Southwest.

- Arrived at YVR at 0510 for my 0823 flight
- HUGE line up at United Airlines - they told me I couldn't take my laptop and a carry on suitcase sad.gif Paid $20.00 to check my carry on suitcase
- 0545 arrived at first customs officer "I am here to have my visa proceeded" - he seemed confused on what to do with all my stuff. He asked where I worked I explained that I had worked for the Vancouver School Board and that Friday was my last day of work. He wanted to know if I owned a house in Cali. Eventually he asked me to proceed through the double doors
- 0555 nice young officer takes my work hands back the xray and asks me to take a seat and I will get you out of here as soon as possible. A couple of minutes later he takes me into another room and asks me to sign a paper in a small rectangle with a Sharpie and then takes 2 fingerprints. He get me some cleaner up i had wiped it away already. Then he takes me to the counter and explains about the visa and welcomes me to the USA.

15 minutes tops!! Easy peasy!!

Sorry everyone, I'm sure there is a thread relating to this, but I haven't found it yet! wacko.gif

So I'm just wondering if anyone flew out of Vancouver, BC and where the POE is? At the airport? I seem to recall when I went to Hawaii, and flew out of there, I went through either Canada immigration or US Customs, but I hadn't boarded the plane yet! And I'm almost positive when I arrived in Seattle, I didn't need to go through anything, just get on the next plane to Hawaii. I'm really not that familiar with flying out of Canada, but I'm sure this is the way I'll go when I move. Guess I just want to make sure that envelope gets into the right hands.

They're set off at the marina, so as long as the evening is good, makes for pretty colours on the water.

I know that Myrtle Beach in SC is the same way. Tim has gone a couple times or so, and says that even after an hour and he starts to leave, there is more and more going off! So at least I'll be with him next year. I'm looking forward to it.

Sent to me from my Dad - Happy Canada Day

On the sixth day God turned to the Archangel Gabriel and said: "Today I am going to create a land called Canada It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty. It shall have tall majestic mountains full of mountain goats, and eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs over-looking sandy beaches with an abundance of sea life, and rivers stocked with salmon."

God continued, "I shall make the land rich in resources so as to make the inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Canadians, and they shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth."

"But Lord," asked Gabriel "don't you think you are being too generous to these Canadians?"
"Not really," replied God "just wait and see the winters I am going to give them."

I just called and spoke with a lovely customer service rep from Canada Revenue Agency (I called 1-800-959-1953). For residents of BC (I can't speak for the other provinces) she advised me that I should fax a letter on/around the day I leave to (604) 584-5164 with my name, old address, new address, telephone number, social insurance number and the date I will be leaving Canada. She also advised me that I will likely still receive a GST cheque in the mail in October and that I can mail it back with a letter telling them I am no longer eligible, along with a copy of the fax I originally sent.

In addition, BC residents can let MSP know you're leaving by filling out an online form here https://www.health.g...s/msp/7063.html

Thanks MellySuzanne! I bookmarked that. I'll be contacting CRA soon. My GST is direct deposit, so I hope I can get them to stop that. I may see if it can be switched to cheques, then I could just send it back.

Hi everyone - I'm hoping for a little guidance. Hopefully these aren't silly questions! :-)

When leaving Canada on a K1 Visa and moving to the US, who should I notify? Do I need to file a change of address with the Canadian government somewhere? Do I cancel my MSP? Should I have all of my current statements (i.e. student loans) sent to my new home in the US or can I continue to have them sent to my previous address in Canada (my parents' home).

Thanks for any help you can offer!

- Melissa

Thanks, as I was thinking about this too, but since I'm not leaving for 6 weeks, I knew I'd have a wee bit of time. Being a resident of Canada this month, I'm assuming the GST is mine, but I know I won't qualify for the one in Oct., so I thought I'd call closer to the end of the month. I also receive survivor's benefit, and will contact them once I have a US account. (thankfully they will deposit into one) I'm keeping my CIBC account open, and still going to deposit into RRSP's as they're not up for maturity until 2011. I've already set up a phone/fax agreement so that my bank can act on my behalf if I need them to do anything. You may want to check into your bank for something like that too. Also, I ordered a US dollar visa, so that I can use it in the States, and not worry about extra fees, etc. The downside to that is not being able to add it to my online banking accounts. I have to either go to branch or send a cheque, (in US dollars) to pay my statements. I'm hoping the phone/fax agreement will help with that.

Hmmmmm not sure of anything else we need to do..If you're banking online, you should be able to change your address through there too.

Best wishes for everything! star_smile.gif

CanadaFinal report on using ABF U-Pack - relo cube for moving to the USA
Glad you items arrived safely! It will make you feel more at home.

I seriously don't know what I'll do. I have at the most 5 medium boxes. Mainly pictures, and scrapbook goodies. I have books, but only a couple that mean anything to me, and I just may pack them in my suitcases, along with a couple other things. (two very nice lead crystal champagne glasses come to mind). I've had suggestions just to mail them, via the post office, and even someone that works there said people do it all the time. As long as the visa and I-94 copies are on them, I'm hoping that will work. I really do not have enough things for a moving company.

CanadaNOA2 received... now what?
I would say the same thing, to wait until you get the packet to be sure you are seeing the right doctor. If you're coming from Montreal, I believe you have a wee bit longer time to wait than from Vancouver. I was in SC when we got the approval for the petition, (Apr. 16th) and didn't get back home here, (BC) until about May 2nd. My Packet 3 was waiting. I think it arrived Monday or Tues. before I came home. ( A nice gift) I quickly got the police records done, that took two weeks to get, and had already gotten my long form BC a while back. With Vancouver's Consulate, I went to a website to fill in and print off the forms that I needed, but I think that Montreal is a little different.

Congratulations on the approval! kicking.gif

CanadaWhat is your and your SO's song'?
hmmmmm well, we don't officially have a song, however, for the ceremony, I'm hoping to walk down to "I wonder what God was thinking" What a song!!

Actually, I'm hoping that Tim and I will sing it to each other as I come down the aisle!

CanadaCanadians for US Naturalization/Citizenship....
QUOTE (neiks @ Jul 9 2009, 01:23 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
People in general aready assume you become an American automatically when you marry a USC.

Isn't that the truth? I've stopped explaining to people that I really can't become a US citizen for about 4 years from now!
