CanadaAnyone waiting for an interview at the Vancouve Embassy?
QUOTE (Tankgurl38 @ May 14 2009, 08:33 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
When I was in Vancouver for my interview and medical I stayed with family out in Delta. But my fiance came up and we stayed downtown for the weekend.

We stayed at the Howard Johnson on Granville Street. It was close to the Medical Clinic and within a 10 minute walk to the Consulate.

It was a pretty nice hotel, I'd recommend staying there.

Thanks Tankgurl! I did check what the rates to the Day's Inn are..and although it won't cost my firstborn completely...I think I'd have to give them his arm and leg..laughing.gif I'll check out the one you suggested too...

Congrats on getting your interview date!! Its the Consulate that is closed the 3rd Wednesday of every month for staff development day or something like that. I am staying with my cousin in Burnaby so I don't know Vancouver well either. I have heard that there is a Days Inn that is quite reasonable near the Consulate, but it would be a walk to the medical exam. I did see some hotels on Hotwire.com for Vancouver, but have no personal experience with it. I am going to have to be up super early on my Wednesday because the Skytrain and bus system would not get me there by 6:30, and there is a line at the medical office by 6 am! I'll probably just end up calling a cab from Burnaby.

Thanks!! I'll look into the Day's Inn. As long as it doesn't cost me my first born...I'll take it! Now...just to figure out how to get there...lol

I know I keep telling myself not to be nervous! It doesn't work! What I am more nervous about is the logistics of the 3 days I have to be in Vancouver and because I will have my medical following the my interview! What if they don't let me back in the Consulate to drop off the results! I know unlikely...but still...then what I have to go back on Thursday to pick up the Visa? *knocks on wood*

I'm in the same boat...well ferry..lol. I JUST got my appointment letter... kicking.gif kicking.gif for June 23rd, which is a Tues. Not sure if I should make my medical the week before, or for the day after. Thought I read somewhere there's one Wed. a month they don't do exams? Or was that the Consulate is closed? wacko.gif Anyway...I'm not sure what to do. I live on Vancouver Island..hence the ferry...and would rather one trip to the mainland. I faxed that I had the med done...would they get upset if I said it was the next morning?

Also...if anyone can answer..please, please....where can one stay that is close by the med and Consulate? I do know that they are walking distance apart. I don't know that area at all, and most of the friends that I know may live to far out of town to help me get there in time. ( 6:30 am comes early, especially when you should be there MUCH earlier than that!) I won't be driving myself, and have no idea at this point how I'm getting from the ferry to downtown anyways....yeesh!! They sure don't like to make this part easy do they??? LOL LOL ....
TimandJoyceFemaleCanada2009-05-13 12:16:00
CanadaHow often do you clean??
Well, I haven't exactly voted yet, but right now it isn't fair to because my whole house looks cluttered as I'm in the middle of moving. And before that...I cleaned when I wanted to...LOL. Living alone, I didn't care too much about some things. My kitchen is awful to stand and wash dishes in, so most times I'd do them every 2nd day or so. Laundry, about once a week or so, and sheets, when they looked dirty!! towels..just me living here...so not as often as I should. I don't have carpet, so swept most days, not everyday and washed floors more in the winter months, less in summer, unless there was too much spillage in the kitchen.

In my new home there is carpet every except dining and kitchen, so I suspect I'll vacuum once a week or so...depending if it looks dirty or not. And the same again with washing floors, although..it has been established that Americans don't remove their shoes...so I might have to do that more often, until I can subtly "train" guests.. laughing.gif probably do dishes everyday, as I won't mind at all in Tim's kitchen. There is more counter and cupboard space and a double sink!! Whooo hooo I can't wait! I'm one of those strange ones that like to wash, and I let things air dry. Towels and sheets, probably more often than what I've done around here, as well as dusting.

Now..personally, I like a "lived in" look to a home. One that's tidy, but says "We're glad you're here, make your self comfortable." I've been in some homes that look so clean everything sparkles, and I'm afraid to move for fear of getting anything dirty, and have also been in some that were so filthy, I was afraid to move for fear that something would dirty me!!

Thanks for your reply Rhiann. For the engagement part; Does a Canadian need any visa to go and get engaged in US? Will it be illegeal to get married while visiting a girl friend in US for few days !?

Nope! No visa needed for engagement. Only to immigrate TO get married. Tim asked me to marry him while we were in Orlando.

Don't forget to read the guides. It's important to know that you need to be living in Canada at the during the process, although you can still visit each other. We can help you during that time too..

Great photos!! Love the pic's of Tim Hortons..guess I should take some myself before I move. I was just there this morning, visiting with a friend, and she kept commenting on how long the line was...we were there over 2 hours, and the line hardly ever stopped. All I could say is...That's Timmies! She lives on the Island too about an hour south of me. Guess she just doesn't venture in there too often... ohmy.gif

CanadaVisa Journey Cost?
Well, I won't add to the cost, as I think you have enough info! laughing.gif

However, just to say, as long as immunizations are up to date, it only cost me a little over $50 to have the update for the tetnus. As far as hotel and airline costs...keep looking for deals!! I got a great deal off travelzoo to stay at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver for $119.00. So there are some out there, and it just might work out for the time you need it.

By the way, in case it wasn't said, a K-1 may take anywhere from 6-9 months depending. Interviews at the Vancouver consulate can be quicker scheduled than Montreal, because it's not as busy, but it will depend what province your in. Vancouver is for all Western Provinces, and Montreal for all the rest.

Welcome to VJ, and to the Canadian forum. Hope we hear from you lots and feel free to ask any question, or to vent, or to just say hi... smile.gif

CanadaIf You Could Choose to Live in Any State, Which Would You Choose???
Well, haven't had much travel yet. Seen all the West Coast states, and I'd probably want to move back to that direction, only because it's close to BC! If I moved to Washington, I could travel on the Clipper to Vancouver Island! That would be cool.

I like where I am now, but I haven't been here long enough to really consider it "home" and already I know I don't like the humidity! laughing.gif

I've never been to Colorado, but I want to see it for sure. I've a friend in Denver and he's a photographer, and I've seen the pic's hes done. Absolutely beautiful. I've been told by others that it's a great place to live. The climate is supposed to be good during the summer, and I'm not exactly sure about winter, but I think I've heard it's pretty mild, depending where you live.

I'm thinking though, I'll be living in SC for a long, long time, so there's no sense in hoping to move anywhere... laughing.gif

For another country: Canada for sure! Not sure about anywhere else though. Maybe Ireland, only because I love the landscape.
TimandJoyceFemaleCanada2009-08-23 22:55:00
Canadathose who are moving to the states or already moved...
yeah, it really depends on what you have. I got rid of everything big. No furniture what so ever. I also downsized a lot in my clothes department. I had four medium sized boxes and packed pictures, books, and anything I could fit into that I wanted to keep. I mailed two to Tim and they are both here now, my son is mailing the last two.

When I flew down, I had two big suitcases, and a carry on. All with my clothes, and any extra goodies I wanted right away, ( immigration files, taxes, etc) I also checked a box that contained three wall pictures that I didn't trust mailing. Although the airlines lost it, they were able to track it and I got it the day after I arrived and all fine. I haven't checked the boxes yet, but they look alright. The boxes are probably about $70 each, and I flew American Airlines, and they rob you blind for checked luggage!! laughing.gif So I won't tell you what I paid cause wow!! It was a lot !! blink.gif Ok, Ok... $15 for 1st bag, $25 for 2nd, and$100 for 3rd!! *Gulp*

Good Job being so prepared! That's so weird they gave you so many problems... When I went to get mine there were no questions asked!

yeah, I was hoping that because I was prepared with documents to show I was entitled as a K-1, she still said she couldn't get past a certain part on the computer when she was entering the information. But I got it now. Then they get to see me again when we go back to have it changed to my married name..laughing.gif Wonder how much that will confuse them! wacko.gif
TimandJoyceFemaleCanada2009-09-04 11:10:00
CanadaGot my SSN
Tim and I went into the office on the 24th of Aug. I was armed with information because I knew that they wouldn't know what I was talking about when I said I could get an SSN on a K-1, however, she said she couldn't get past a certain point on the computer, and to call DHS. So we went to the Congress office, and the woman there said, "oh, no you need your EAD" I showed her a print off of info that states K-1's are work authorized, (well, not really but you know) and she called the SS Supervisor, who said, "yes she can get it, but it won't be authorized to work." ( I knew that) She was impressed that I had my facts!! ( Thanks VJ). So she instructed the workers to put my application through.

My main worry was the marriage license, so we went to the probate judge who let me know that I didn't need the SSN, my A-number on my visa will do fine! ( I'm so glad, we're registering for the license next week!)

So finally on the 31st, we were able to get around to the office again ( we've been SO busy with wedding plans!) and applied again. The girl there recalled my situation, took a copy of my visa and I-94 to give to her supervisor, and today I got the letter that say's my card will come in two weeks!! Yay!! I have my number so we could probably go ahead and get my name on Tim's account now!! If all goes well, maybe my card will come in before we're married in 16 days.

I live really far enough away from my best friend and when she had a bad couple of days last week I sent her flowers. She was so happy, she even cried she was so happy. That's something you can do, and on the card just put something like "Think of you", or "With Love" your name.
[/quote]
That's a really good idea. There are lots of sites that let you send gifts to people. Just let her know your sorry for her situation and that you're sending her thoughts and hugs. It must be horrible what she's going through. I couldn't imagine it. Let her know you're a phone call away if she needs to talk.

QUOTE (Danu @ Jul 28 2009, 12:14 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Just the DS-230 and checklist. To be taken to the interview are the DS-160 confirmation and application, DS-156, DS-156k, his birth certificate and copies, evidence of support, letter of intent, police check, 2 passport photos (3 are needed as well for the medical), his medical results, any divorce/death certs and anything related to kids, if applicable.

I would also like to add something to this list. Bringing to the interview everything listed, but also proof of relationship. I don't know how Montreal handles things, but the one in Vancouver asked me and I had a stack of pictures, emails, chat logs, etc. I had lots of evidence of engagement and up coming wedding. Pictures of my dress, bridesmaids dresses, bridal registries etc. Anything to do with the wedding. I really don't know if this makes a difference or not...but set a date. She asked me when do we plan on getting married and I was able to speak in confidence, Sept. 19th. In fact I think confidence must have been strong with me because the whole process was painless. And although she took the pictures, glanced at the first one and handed them back, I really believe it was my being that prepared that she had no problem approving the visa. She spoke to me for about 5 minutes only. Each consular is different, so it's good to be prepared. I also had copies of the original packet we sent in but she didn't need it. It was kinda neat to stand there and see on her side a picture of Tim on our information.

Well when you log in and proceed with the transaction, aren't you authorizing it to go through?

I suppose so. I had called because I wanted to be sure I had set everything up right, and would do the transaction right, and stated it was my first one. She said I should receive an email to print off and sign, and fax or scan and email back, and that was the debit authorization for them. After that, she said all transactions would go through, and not take as long. But I never got the email to fill out.

TimandJoyceFemaleCanada2009-09-07 12:55:00
CanadaMixed feelings about having civil wedding first
Just to add my two cents worth..lol.

We're getting married once! We have been planning a wedding for months. Tim asked me in October of '08 to marry him, and he didn't realize all the hurdles facing us. We got our petition in about a month later, and made plans, plans, plans. I found my bridesmaids. ( Thankfully, two don't work, and the other is a nurse, and she's pretty good at getting time off) Tim got his groomsmen and ushers together. I found the dresses for the bridal party and myself online, and sent the links to Tim's sister. She's great at sewing. We got A LOT of ideas, and things for the reception online. We contacted as many people as we could to let them know that as soon as we have a date they would be invited. I also had an opportunity, which I know a lot of people can't, to spend the month of April here in SC with Tim, and we got our photographer, reception place, flowers, etc. all lined up. They all understood that we could not set a date yet. We kept hoping for certain ones, but had to push them back. Finally the NOA2 came in April, and my interview in June. I came down the middle of August and we have been going non stop to finalize our details, and now we're into the last 2 weeks before we get married.

Tim has been a trooper. I guess I got one of those rare guys that did a lot of the work. He found several things online, and sent me the links. I found the material for the bridesmaids dress and my wedding dress at Hobby Lobby for $2.99/yard! Not bad eh? It's not easy, but through websites, and when you can get there to visit each other, make as many plans as you can. If you have a date in mind, figure out the average timeline from start to finish to get the visa. You will still have 6 months to use it after you get it. We knew it would be in the fall, and I just had a feeling we would be approved in April. When that came, we picked either the 5th or 19th of Sept. and the 19th worked to be better. Once I got the visa in June, I called Tim and said "give everyone their deposits now!"

Best wishes for your journey. I hope it all goes quickly for you.

What?? So sorry to hear that...apparently somewhere along the line Canada caught up with things! I remember seeing a link somewhere from a Canadian government site about collecting EI in the States. Haven't found that link yet...but I'll keep searching. I hear ya big time on needing that money for a lot of things. The bright side is that I don't think the EAD takes too long after AOS.

From the Canada VJ Wiki page.

This information applies only to CR1/IR1 K1 and K3 visa holders - who may be eligible to collect Employment Insurance after they have moved to the U.S.

Contact Information:

The out of country EI office number is: 1-877-486-1650

The information on out of country claims is here: http://www1.servicec...anada.shtml#top

The website for EI is here: http://www1.servicec...nu/eihome.shtml

The online application is here: http://www100.hrdc-d...lish/home2.html

Important notes:

- Do not quit your job too early. A week or two should not matter, however any longer than that and your application for EI may be denied.

- Apply immediately upon entering the U.S., absolutely within 30 days of quitting. Your application may be denied if you do not apply within the 30 days.

Applying:

- You can apply online Online Application

- Ideally your ROE will show your reason for quitting as - relocating to be with spouse/get married/etc - however even if the reason shown is 'quit' you may still be eligible based on the information they will gather from you after you submit your claim.

Wonderful!! Thank you!!! Funny how it doesn't let me into the application site, but probably cause I'm still in Canada!! laughing.gif I'll have all my info, and I'll be applying right away anyways...cause you just never know. If I have to wait until EAD that's ok. If all goes well at my interview, I'll be working until Aug. 15th, and moving on the 18th, so I can apply as soon as I cross the border.

I did not...and I filed the 2nd day I was in the country. They didn't tell me I wouldn't get it until the end of my 3 months (tell me I wasn't miffed beyond words)

I think it depends on which person in the EI office looks at your file. Under SSA rules, K visa are supposed to be able to work - but under IMMIGRATION laws (which are federal and therefore should trump SSA), K's cannot work.

If you get the nice lady and she knows the loophole. you will get EI - if you get whatever person I got you won't sad.gif For sure still apply, just dont get your hopes up like I did...sucks if they say no. You will be able to start collecting once your recieve your EAD if you are told you can't get it for the first 90 days, but I was waiting on that money for a lot of things...I'm hoping I won't have to wait too long to find a job after my EAD arrives.

I think we need more information. I'm not employed, and haven't been looking for work so I'm the last person that could give you any information, but your question is very general. Yes, some experiences could give you ideas, but it might take a load off your mind if you could tell us where you're going to be living in the US and what area of work you're looking for, what education you have, and even what mode of transportation you'll have.

Good point! To specify:

+I'll be living in Seattle proper.

+I currently work a government job up here in Vancouver that deals with report-writing, investigations, accounts payables, and previously, employee benefits.

+I have a Bachelor's in Criminology from Simon Fraser. I had originally wanted to go into some form of law enforcement (prior to even meeting my husband), but my only goal now is to see how an SFU degree will fare in Seattle's job market.

+I will be taking my car with me when I move over to Seattle.

One thing I find an advantage is that I don't get too optimistic to the point where I'm delusional. When people ask "So what kinda work do you think you'll be doing down there?", I usually respond with:

"Making candles in a factory owned by Pottery Barn."

The scary thing is, I think that is aiming high these days.

CanadaMeet Gilbert
Way to cute!! What an adorable pet for sure, and one that's easy to spoil. Well. they're all easy to spoil. I guess... laughing.gif

I had to give my dog up... sad.gif She was a pit bull/airedale cross and a bundle of energy. I realized that it just wouldn't be right to bring here as there really isn't much room to walk her, and we've been SO busy this past month, she would have been neglected for sure.

However...I'm hoping that after things settle a little in our new married life.. I'd like to look for a Yorkie... innocent.gif

Glad you had an easy medical. smile.gif

Just out of curiosity - are their any male reviews? Hubby is freaking out because I told him that they stick a finger up your bum. laughing.gif

Wawa, wegmans, a thanksgiving in November, Kohls, DSW Shoes, Target, five guys, cheaper stuff, being close to a bunch of cool cities, the longer yellow traffic lights (hehe), oh and my husband. tongue.gif

There's more but I am under pressure here.

Had to sneak in here, before reading on...

I just about died when Tim drove through the yellow, and I thought for sure it would be red before we got to the intersection. ohmy.gif My heart was in my mouth! It didn't turn red until we were right underneath it.

Oh boy..he sure likes to take years off my life... laughing.gif

halloween.gif Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to all Canadian VJers! Enjoy and be thankful for this holiday filled with family, friends, and food! halloween.gif

Ant

Thanks!! You too..

This is my first Thanksgiving away from my (former) home... sad.gif I'm missing my family. But I have Tim and he's keeping me company smile.gif I wanted to go out today to buy something nice for dinner, but it' POURING with rain. First time I've seen that here! Guess I kinda feel like I'm home in BC after all! laughing.gif and to think, two days ago it was 90 F/32C. Maybe we'll risk the rain, go get soaked, and I'll buy either a ham, or a big chicken to do in the oven.

I look forward to American Thanksgiving next month. Not sure what it will entail yet, I've been to one a couple years ago at Tim's sister's place. It was a small gathering of family and I loved it. I'm not sure I'm ready to entertain here yet..I've so much to organize in this house! * What is she doing on VJ then? )

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

CanadaMoving down to US
I just downsized everything and mailed four medium sized boxes, ( about 50 pounds each) with things I wanted to keep...pictures, books, extra clothes, etc. Then I had two big suitcases on the plane, and a box holding my wall pictures, ( kinda costly but worth it) when I crossed. I didn't have any problems receiving the boxes.
