CanadaMothers’ Day Dilemma…

Ant - where's Option #3 where you stay in bed and have breakfast served by D + Baby A? :)

 I heartily agree with this!! Which would also solve the problem in option #2 of who to spend time with on Sunday...aka MOTHER'S DAY!

I really suppose it would all depend on the other "mother's" and how they feel about such things. I really can't remember spending a whole day with mine, or my mother-in-law before.

My first marriage, both lived about 3 hours from us, and I really don't know what we did. Probably sent cards or just called. We would have been working so I doubt we would have gone up each year, but the times that we did...probably a lunch or something with both at the same time. (course, they lived in the same town) Other than that..it was ME getting spoiled! :)

Second marriage...same thing. This time we all lived in the same town, and my late husband wasn't close to his mom, but we may have taken her out occasionally. My sister and I usually took out our mom. My mom ended up with Alzheimer's and passed away in 2008. *and my son was old enough to spoil me!*

Third marriage: both our mothers are gone. Tim's mom passed in 2001. My son still lives in Canada, so I'll be batting my baby blues to have Tim take me out....

....not like that will be difficult!!

Hope you find a solution that works for you!

CanadaMailing from Canada to new home in US?
I mailed 4 boxes...about 50 lbs each, (cost about $70 each)and put gift or gift returned to sender with a description of what's in the box. Everything arrived [semi] safely. One box was crunched a little in the corner, but nothing damaged.

I'm sure mailing the box will be ok.

Just running in here for a quick minute...*pant, pant*

Have you guys ever played Teather ball (Sp?) You know, the game with the ball on a rope attached to a pole in the ground? We got in sooo much trouble with that in grade school! They actually cut the balls off the poles so we couldn't play anymore

I don't think ours got cut off, but that's where you found everyone at recess and lunch! :)

OMG. VJ turned my curse into an email address! I am going to use that for my employers when sending out resumes. Please email me at b@stard] at b@stards dot com. Posted Image

CanadaThinking Canadian in the USA

Courtesy - the common 'please', 'thank you' and 'you're welcome' are not generally part of the daily conversation. I say 'thank you' to someone and I get an 'uh unh' . In the stores I hear people say 'gimme so and so' and when they get what they want they don't bother to say 'thanks'. It is either nothing or something like a 'grunt'.

Here where I live, I actually have found a lot of USC's very polite. I may once in a while see someone not say "thank-you" or something. Even wait staff here are wonderful. Never had a bad experience yet.

That's not to say I won't see it when I get away from here. (hmmmm trying to think of some real major time with rude Americans...hmmmmm...nope....)

The two issues with me that I found, (and it may only be within this area), is that fact that restaurants do not have to pay minimum wage, because servers receive tips; and the other was that Tim mentioned an employer that never gave him a pay stub in all the years (23 or so) that he worked there. He looked into it, and was told it was not required! :o

I guess, also, you have to tell employers to take tax off your paycheque, or else they won't and you'll pay IRS at tax time. A friend just called because she thinks the place she works at didn't take it off and she has to pay! Again, not sure if that's the norm all over, but it was good to find out that before I start working! Back home, I think I could have asked to have more taken off, but I always had to pay tax, CPP, and EI off my cheque!

OH!!! Another one .......the fact that it's open liquor season at football games, etc! I'm pretty sure the rules are a little stricter back in BC.

Just sit back and relax...and don't leave the country...

Your status is "pending". You'll get the NOA's to your AOS, EAD, and AP. (the paperwork part) Most times, AOS goes fairly quickly, so hopefully it won't be too long before your GC. Usually around 3-4 months. Meanwhile...enjoy being married! :)

wow! hope it isn't too painful.

Our furnace stopped working. <_<

no..not painful, like a sunburn from the sun...but itchy and pink!! I may be told today not to have my session and to wait a few days. Great..and we're going to Charlotte NC tomorrow morning to have lunch with friends. I can just see it now..*scratch; scratch* "so good to see you..." *scratch* "how have you been?"...*scratch; squirm in chair*..."anything new?".....

Hope you get your furnace fixed soon...

According to Danno in OT, soon you'll be paying 10% more for that privilege. :hehe:

Count me in the I love my GPS club. That said, I usually have a backup map with me just incase I get lost (now my backup maps are on my iphone ) Its helped me get oriented around here, and it yells at me if I'm going over the speed limit which was nice when we were doing the cross country tip and my eyes werent use to looking at the other speed wheel yet, now I'm trained on where to look though lol.

We got one before we went on our 3 week road trip after we got married. We also used the atlas as well. The GPS came in handy for lots of things...hotels, restaurants...etc..so that we wouldn't have to spend endless time and gas driving in circles. Course, Tim and I are a little spoiled and try to stay at Hampton Inns as much as we can..

However, sometimes that little critter can be wrong...telling us to turn left when we should turn right..and we're still trying to figure out why it made us circle around an entire block to our hotel, when we could have drove straight down the street, made a u-turn...and pulled up in front of it!!

+1

Metric system makes much more sense, and makes things easier to convert. The U.S. was supposed to convert to metric when Canada did, but backed out. I just set the thremometer in my car to celcius and refer to it in celcius. Just makes things easier for Mel.

Awww that's sweet. I'm afraid...I'm old school.. I prefer Fahrenheit, and glad the van has both at the push of a button. I much prefer lbs, to grams...and gallons to liters..although, back home I was getting used to it. My son however, needs metric so he knows what temperature it is when I tease him that it's almost 80F (26C) in MARCH!

Today someone on the phone said I sounded like I was from California.

I guess I'm losing my Canadian accent... and I'm not getting a NY one in its place, LOL.

I wouldn't think you're losing your Canadian accent. I'm fairly new to these parts and have had 3 Americans, (from different parts of the State) say they didn't think I sounded like I was from Canada! They thought at least from Washington area. That is until I said "about; garage; drama; or mom"...Guess us Northerner's say our "a's" different! And "mom" comes out British sounding....

No Dairy Queen here either, only one in AR and that one is about 20miles away from us. :(

OH I get to go to Big Lots this Sat yay I can't wait to check it out.

Here in Lancaster County we have Whoopie pies. Very similar to Joe Louis but without the chocolate coating and more filling, and homemade by the Amish (and my MIL). They're awesome.

Hey that's cool Peachey! I think we're going to be up there in a couple weeks. We've a wedding we're going to in WV on June 12th, and then we're heading up to Hershey and Lancaster for a few days of touring. Not sure how much we'll see as I don't want to be gone to long, (and we're driving)but we definitely want to tour the Amish Country. I hear the cooking is fantastic! I'll have to remember that treat you just mentioned too, sounds yummy!

No house yet, Udella! I am still homeless. lol. We put an offer in on one I loved but someone else put in a stronger offer at the same time and we lost it. Super bad timing. I cried. So now we have an offer in on a new house but I think that one's going to fall through as we, so far, cannot come to an agreement on the price. I have pretty much convinced my husband to settle on a rental because I need a break from the stress of being homeless, having no access to my belongings because they are all in storage, and the fact that I have my daughter's wedding (and another wedding) to focus on, as well as getting my parents' house put back together as they are nearing the end of their renovations and my daughter's bridal shower is being held there. lol. I just need one less thing to worry about, that's all! Is that too much to ask?! lol

Awwww Krikit..I hope it all works out for you soon. Funny how more than one person can put an offer on a house at a time..I'm sure back home if there is an offer, no one else can unless it's not accepted, or something like that. When my late husband was house shopping we put an offer in on a home, and then was told by the realtor it was "frozen" pending on another offer.

Haha. That reminds me of driving in Canada with one last month. My Nuvi told me to take the "Cue". I'm like.... Posted Image . So when I looked at the screen I could see "Qew" in upper and lower case letters. Travelling in another direction it told me to take the QEW and said it properly. The letters were all in upper case. It also has a problem with left and right. It will tell you something is on one side of the road when it is on the other. It also has a hard time distinguishing between Walmart and Target and Wendy's vs McDonald's. Looking forward to an interactive version that you can correct. lol

We have a Garmin that does that too! You wouldn't believe the amount of times it told us to turn left, when it should have been right. We were even late for a funeral because of that! lol...

Plus...when we were looking for our hotel one night...it told us to do this complete drive around the block, and all we needed to do was drive straight down the street a bit...do a u-turn...and there it would be. ( we couldn't see the hotel sign from were we were, that's why we didn't do it) and there wasn't any thing written to say no u-turns weren't allowed!

I think Tim wanted to throw it out the window on that trip

Otherwise, except for the odd glitch or two, it's come in quite handy!

I know a few folks at my work here in Vancouver (mainland) commute almost daily from Victoria (island) by seaplane. Round-trip for the 40 minutes flight & motion sickness: C$150.00 :o

The planes flew out of Comox Marina 3 times a day too. I used to watch them take off, and return while I was at work.

Cost one way when they first started 2 years ago....$150 EACH WAY...

I just looked it up, and they've gone down $20...$129..each way....

I love Ross, I've found alot of clothes there that would normally be like 40 to 50 dollars and I pay 10 to 20 dollars.
We're in alot of debt right now so I can't really afford to buy nice jeans and the like. I just hope that changes and my husband starts paying his debt again.
I want nice things too!

I like Ross and Marshall's too! But the closest is about an hour away, so I don't go there much. We have a Belk in town, and I do my best to go when the sales are good, and clearance is on their 75% savings. (course, by then..I don't find much..lol)

I buy second hand and from Thrift shops too. I always buy shoes new but i like funky tops and sweaters and you can find some awesome stuff at the thrift store. i never pay full price for clothing. Ever. It feels like a rip off. I pay good money for shoes but I don't have a lot and they get well used so... they gotta be new and well made.

I've bought lots from thrift stores in the past. There is a Goodwill here, and a couple Sally Ann's, I haven't gone in to see them as much. I find that some of the sales in the local stores..(Belk, TJ Maxx) can be comparable to thrift stores anyways. I really miss the Value Village I used to go to though. They put things according to size, and even colour so you didn't have to search as hard. I usually always found lots in that store.

That is pretty nice of the post office !

So my Husband visited the Kennedy Space center yesterday. It was a tad boring - he also saw the Star Trek movie at the IMAX there - which was good. Methinks the people at the Space Center aren't really visitor friendly with their scheduling and tours.

He had a choice of a free tour or a paid tour - it takes around 3 hours. The thing is, if he had taken the tour he would have missed the movie - so he didn't. There are no shorter tours and if you don't take a tour you don't get to see the launch pad. One would think they would have mini tours? I mean what if you had your kiddies with you - a three hour tour would be kind of long for them (queue Gilligan's Island music).

Anyway, he brought me a gift from the gift shop. It's a packet of ice cream of the kind they would take on Apollo missions - it's quite freakish to have ice cream that doesn't need to be frozen.

Originally Developed for the early Apollo Missions, this space treat is frozen to -40 F (-40 C) and then vacuum dried and placed in a special foil pouch. Freeze-dried foods are used by astronauts eating under weightlessness conditions in space.

Interesting looking ice cream..but how does it taste?

I agree, three hours is a long time for little ones...*sings*...on a three hour tour.....la la la *

Cool and overcast here so far - only 77 - I still have the windows open. We had a huge storm come through yesterday - I was working about 15 miles away when it went overhead and we lost power. So I ended up driving home going back through the storm and beating it to the house where about 10 minutes later it came over the house too - rain like buckets being dumped. (At least I didn't have to water the garden!). The temperature plummeted from 89 degrees to 72 right after the storm but after the skies cleared it went back up to 88. It cooled off overnight though and it hasn't done that for a while, hence the open windows smile.gif . More storms expected today but right now it is that quiet ' waiting' period before bad weather moves in. I kind of like it like this.

We had a big storm here the other night!! Very, very rare for us. A thunderstorm that lasted for hours!! Usually, IF we get thunder and lightening it will be like, 10 minutes, and gone. This one woke the whole Valley up in the middle of the night. There was more rainfall that night than we would get for the month of July. I guess over 800 lightening strikes were counted! blink.gif
