CanadaInterview question
welcome to VJ! Glad you're here and that you're asking questions. This whole process can be stressful, and frustrating!! To be sure. However, you'll get lots of support here. The average time for a K-1 is about 6 months. Some can be much quicker, and some longer. Read the guides at the top to know the difference between that and CR-1 and ask us anything.

CanadaCanadian Guilt?

One of my husband's co-workers (a spanish speaking US citizen) is currently house-hunting. The realtor they were dealing with asked them if they had their greencard. :o

First, you moronic twit...... not all home buyers in the US are American citizens.
Secondly, you simpleminded pinhead..... you don't require citizenship to purchase property here.
Lastly, you brainless bonehead..... having an accent doesn't make you an illegal. :bonk:

That realtor is now their ex-realtor. :)

:o  I think that realtor needs to do a little homework!

No...I don't feel guilty. I didn't choose the nationality I am, although I'm certainly proud to be Canadian. But like others have mentioned, I hate the way that others get "drilled" and can take a while, although, I do understand, for good reason. I totally understand the US has to be careful.

I hope those that have been waiting quite a while to be reunited will have a quick and painless journey.

CanadaMilk in Bags

No kidding! There was a comment on that youtube video from an Albertan who said something like, "Never in my 25 yrs in Alberta have I ever seen milk in a bag!"

I obviously dated myself, LOL!

You know, I grew up in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, and I remember milk in a bag. We had it for a while. Course, nothing beat the fresh milk we got from our neighbour. All that thick cream on top..yum.

Either you can't get it any more, or I just wasn't in the habit of buying it, but I don't recall seeing it in stores when I was on my own. Just bought it in just regular cartons...Now I buy it in plastic jugs here.

Hmmmm I don't think I've seen it in cartons here. I sure miss Dairyland and Island Farms though....
TimandJoyceFemaleCanada2010-02-05 09:03:00
CanadaThe Canadian Campfire
Ok, well, this is kinda silly. I lived on Vancouver Island, in the Comox Valley all my life, and the wildest wildlife I had ever seen was deer. ( oh, and a couple of beavers at different times)

When Tim came up to see me back in '07, his first time into Canada, we saw two bear at different occasions! Once in the valley running down the road, and once on our way home from Telegraph Cove. I couldn't believe it! All my life, never seen a bear!! He comes up for one week and sees two!! (Boy I'm glad I was with him!!)

CanadaWhat to get a Canadian man for Valentine's Day?
The first Valentines for me and Tim, I gave him something that speaks loudly of our relationship, and the thing that we had in common that brought us together. Ice cream spoons. I found them in a kitchen store in my home town. It's a long story, but ice cream has a major thread in our getting to know each other, and how our relationship developed.

The ice cream spoons are small than a dinner spoon, and are flat at the end so you can scrape the bowl better. Go figure; tried to find a picture but I couldn't

I also added those fun type straws shaped as a heart...

Maybe you can find something that will be token of your relationship, like something to do with a trip you had together that was memorable.

CanadaI-94 is stapled to my passport...

They didn't even staple mine!

I don't think mine was either, I just kept it in the back of my passport so I knew where it was. After all, I wouldn't be leaving the states anyway without AP, and by then, the 1-94 would have expired. Now I'm just keeping it as a token! :P

CanadaLeaving the US today, :(
Sam and Ben made a good point. Plan the next time you'll see each other. That's what Tim and I did.

wow...6 weeks! We only saw each other a week at a time, until 2008 when we went on a two week road trip to CA. We had months between visits as he was on the east coast, and I on the west. It was hard, but we made it! :) Hard to believe we met in 2006, and my first trip to visit him was in 2007.....

Canadaaos questions

For the medical, so I have had mine within the past year, so i know i do not need one, do I definitely need to go see a civil surgeon to get the form filled out, or can i just send in my vaccination records fromt he medical??? id like to save money haha

You can certainly take a chance and just send in the one from your medical, but a few folks have gotten RFE'd for it. I was one of the VERY few that got my approval, and I didn't do the transcribe. One option; send it in, and then call around to the CS's in the area, ( the ones that are USCIS approved) and find out how much they charge. Make sure they understand you WILL NOT need a full medical, as a lot of doctors think you do.

If you happen to get RFE'd for it, then you'll know where to take the forms too, and it really shouldn't hold up your case too long.

Another piece of advice. If you sign up for emails, and you get one that says.."we sent an RFE" don't assume it's for the medical. I did get an RFE, but it was for something completely different. Had I gone and did the transcribe, I still would have wasted a bit of money on it!

Good luck!

CanadaGetting married in Canada
Hope this all works out for you Adam as I know you've more than likely made plans. Knowing what I know now, I'd be getting married ASAP ( today if possible) and AOSing. Look in the guides for all that to see what you have, and what you're going to need. More than likely a full medical, but I'm not sure if AOS is the same as what I went through. I also don't know how long it will take with your situation, but I'm pretty sure you're fine as your intent was WORK related, ( your TN visa will prove that).

I understand the two of you want to get married, and you want to celebrate in Canada and all that, but please, read the guides carefully. One wrong move and you'll be denied at the border, and I'm pretty sure you don't want that.

CanadaThe Great Dinner vs Supper Debate
I grew up with "supper" but I seem to call it dinner more times than I say supper, although, I have said that.

For years in Canada in the city....I called the tea kettle the "kettle"...
My American husband and extended family in the rural areas....called all the pots in the house the "kettle".....

Funny! I grew up calling pots and pans...well, pots and pans!!! The other word was saucepan. Tim calls them .... boilers! Wow did that cause confusion one day. But he sure looked at me funny when I said "stock pot"....

His niece had NO idea when I asked for a tea towel once....

I get quite the kick out of the different names for the same things.....

CanadaCanadian vs. American PB, and grocery stores

OMG, I remember the first time I saw a piggly wiggly. I seriously thought it was a joke store or something.

LOL yeah, I wasn't sure what it was either..

I did forget to mention one thing that I DEARLY miss when it comes to grocery shopping....BULK FOOD!!! Most of the veggies are that way, but not the mushrooms :( I have to buy a basket of them. Then I'd have to use them up fast because they'd go bad. At least through Safeway, I could buy 3 or 4 and chop them up for my dinner. I quite enjoyed being able to buy just how much I needed with certain food items.

But other than that... on the choices.

CanadaCanadian vs. American PB, and grocery stores

Wegmans? Zehs? Good Basics?

No Frills? Loblaws?

I've never heard of these places....oh wait thats because I grew up in the prairies....and moved to the midwest USA

Heyyyyy I hear ya!!! I was on Vancouver Island. I had Save On Foods, (till they closed) Safeway, and Superstore. Sometimes Walmart, but it wasn't a"super" store, and I didn't like a lot of the selection anyway.

Save On Foods in my opinion was superior over any of the others. ( Well, I could have gone to Thrifty's, but the store was too small and crowded for me) Save On had great produce. And the deli department? wow...so much to choose from. You want cheese??? That's where to go. I really missed it.

Had to shop at Safeway. The produce was much better than Superstore. And there were a few other things I preferred. Over all, I didn't like Superstore much, but it was a lot cheaper.

Most the "Canadian" items you can't find in the US, I don't miss anyway. Not a ketchup, (catsup) fan. I've adapted. Breyers makes a nice yogurt, although I miss the bigger containers. Here is just a couple flavours or so. The cheese isn't too bad. I buy sharp or extra sharp chedder. Real good with scramble eggs!! :) The milk isn't dairyland, but I like it.

And you can't beat Blue Bell ice cream!! :D

I knew there would be differences, ( and lots of them!) and if I didn't think I'd like them...then I wouldn't have moved. I like SC. Ok...so it doesn't have the view of the mountains, and ocean I'm used to, but it has it's own beauty. Once I find that out, I'll let you know.... J/K!!!

Oh! forgot to mention. I have Piggly Wiggly, Food Lion, and Bi-Lo to choose from. Not bad. Produce is better in Food Lion and Bi-Lo though.

CanadaWhy Do Canadian Fast Food Restaraunts Serve Fries With EVERYTHING!

See: Chicken Fried Steak :D

I remember the first time when Tim ordered that! I was like " well, that's a strange name" After our dinner came, I asked him...."so, how's your chicken?" He nearly fell off the chair from laughing so hard! :P

What's with Americans and poutine anyways?

Yummy!! I actually loved the poutine that Zellers had. They got the curds from Montreal....sooooo goooood

Sonic,

There's a couple of Sonic's here. I like their burgers...

Ok...what about 5 guys??? Wow...what a GREAT BURGER AND FRIES!!! The best I've ever had!

CanadaSo foxy loxy, how do you like your turkey lurkey?

The thing I think I miss most about turkey dinners is the smell in the house when the turkey is about 3 hours away from being ready. It is just heavenly.

I'm definitely with you on that one.. Miss the smell of the oven roasted kind, filled up with sausage stuffing, and bread stuffing....YUM!

The deep fried is good though..

I'll just have to have Canadian Thanksgiving here, and show them how it's done! LOL

CanadaSo foxy loxy, how do you like your turkey lurkey?

Deep fried Turkey, the ultimate bastardization of a pure culinary delight? Discuss.

That's how we've had it here! Tim's BIL does it good! Very juicy, and never a problem with over cooked birds etc.

CanadaCDN Passport Renewal
thanks!! Don't mean to hijack the thread or anything, but I'm thinking I'll apply for my new passport when I go home to Canada in October, so I can get it in my married name. Mine expires April 2011, so I'm sure it will be ok to do it then, and the people at the office are so friendly. Just wanted to make sure I'd have all the right documents!

CanadaCanadians feeling guilty about taking jobs away from Americans?
I don't feel guilty. My skills are such that most places I can apply to are retail, and so I know I'm not the only person applying. There will be other Americans, possible Canadians, and other nationalities applying. The job will go to the one with not only experience, but also that "first impression" given on the day of interview.

Even if I did have other skills to apply for a more *professional* job...I'd still not be the only one applying, and the position would still go to the one for the exact same reasons.

Hmmm hard to express what one is thinking in these forums sometimes...so I really hope all that makes sense..
