Australia and New ZealandMy K-1 interview. Approved! May 1, 2012

Hi Athena13,
Congratulations! It's a good feeling when you walk out of there, isn't it? The first thing I remarked on was that there was little privacy. I had this misconceived idea that interviews were conducted in an office without an audience.
I'm packed and ready to fly out. Got all the hard work done early on, so now I can sit back and relax.
Regards,
Gerald
Getting your visa and entering the US is a real landmark, but there's a lot more paperwork and interviews to do after you get there!

Yeah haha i'm super surprised about the privacy too!

All good, thank you have a nice beach sunset wedding in Hawaii!

Yeah lots of AOS paperwork to get temp green card, EAD, SSN and AP....

yeah it's a new thing we have to do now, instead of giving them a self-address express envelop. We go online ustraveldocs.com to create a profile, just a formal way to give them our address I think. SO they post it to that address.

Australia and New ZealandMy K-1 interview. Approved! May 1, 2012
Yay I got approved, here is my story. It won't be as detailed as Vanessa's but it gives a pretty good outline I think :innocent:

My interview is 11am. I got there at 1050am.
Go to MLC Centre level 10, going through security check, switch off mobile phone and other electric appliances. They put my bag in their storage and gave me a number for that. I'm only allowed to take my documents and wallets.

Me and another girl and guy waited there for the lift. After 2 minutes, a lady takes us into the lift and straight to level 59.

On Level 59, a lady behind counter asked for my passport, ticks it off her list and let me into a heavy gate.

Then take a ticket (They didn't tell you that) and take a seat, there was 20+ people waiting there already.

Waited 10 mins saw my number being called, then a lady behind the counter asked me to get the documents ready (as listed on pkt 4 email) and gave them to her one by one as requested. and asked me when are you flying to USA. Got my finger prints there, then she asked if I created a profile online. I said Yes. Then finally she said : it's all good, please take as seat and you will be called again.

I waited for 30-40 mins, while listening to other people's stories... (haha I don't know why but the officers at these half enclosed cubicles use headphones, their voice is on loudspeaker, everyone can hear what they were asking, and can hear some answers too if this interviewee is also loud) So much for privacy eh?

They asked:
Were you married before, do you have any children.
Have you been to USA.
Have you lived in any other countries.
how did you two meet?
How did you keep in touch?
What's your plan for wedding?
USA Fiance's job and income.

and that's it, don't even ask for proof of relationship.

When it was my turn there was even less questions. and it was all good. They gave me a white slip: Congratulations, your visa has been approved! etc

I asked them twice (different person) if I can come pick it up. They said no. But they use express post, one said it will get processed within 5 working days, one said it wil arrive after 5 working days.

Now I just wait.

Australia and New ZealandHE WAS APPROVED!!!
Today I went to talk to consulate about my 'missing passport', luckily i got to talk to a lady who chased it up for me.

---i asked her why some officers allow pick up while others don't. She doesn't know why.
---I asked if not providing our own envelop is ok, she said yeah, provide your own is an extra step for their staff, so contrary to what Skyenz said.

    all those different regulations/standards/rules among the officers are just so frustrating!

and my visa and passport is still at Baulkham Hills Post Office!!!!! jeez.... she said it's their distribution centre.

Australia and New ZealandInterview in 2 Days... Then What?

You probably won't need the x-ray but you do need the DS-3025. In fact it is a good idea at the consulate to ask if you can have a copy of the entire medical.
Get a social security card as soon as you can go to your SS office about 2 weeks after entering the US.
Check to see if you will need to fill out the I-693 for AOS. If you do, start looking for a cheap civil surgeon.
Contact your DMV to see if you qualify for a state license or if you can use your Australian one, and for how long (different rules for different states).
Start getting the paperwork for AOS together.
After you get married, follow the AOS guide.
You cannot leave the US until you get your AP or GC.
GC is taking a long time currently if your application is transferred to CSC, so be prepared for that (currently 6-8 months). Make sure you apply for EAD and AP so you can work etc.

Good luck!

Wow lots of info here

1. we can ask for a copy of the entire medical?
2. SS card 2 weeks after arriving in USA, even before we got married?
3. Im getting AOS paperwork ready as much as I can, before my wedding/registry in USA, then once i got the marriage certificate, i wanna send it
4. is AP taking a long time at the moment too? I will be applying through CSC but i wanna come back in Nov to Aus for a proper wedding! is there enough time? I know they issue EAD, SS, AP and temp GC not necessarily at the same time.

oh Danneh, don't forget waiting for your visa/passport to arrive in the mail is a hell of a journey too! I don't know if i'm a special case, still nothing almost 2 weeks after the interview

Hi there, not enough info....

You are from Australia and your wife is a USC?
You are not on any visa at the moment? You don't have EAD (work permit)??

Im thinking about a job or a business too, since my Aus profession can't be transferred to US without a master degree and length certifying process. i'm on K-1. and after I get married i will have an EAD.

we are thinking of doing soap candle business, or sell some handmade crafty things online.

Australia and New ZealandPolice Check with NSW
Yeah don't get medical done too far ahead, but I think book one for the 5th month after noa2 is safe enough. Unless you are wanting to hand in AOS forms in US too far from this medical date (since it's valid for 1 year)

Police check, yeah with my online one they also said 15 working days (same as paper form) but I got it approved the next day and got it in the mail after 3-4 days. It depends I think. and later on (1 month later) I got a phone call from police, saying they got my police check certificate ready, do I want to send it to me or consulate, I said I already got it one month ago when I did a paper and an e-form. so the system is a bit messy still. I didn't get charged twice.

Australia and New ZealandPolice Check with NSW
Hi
I'm from Sydney and I did my police check in Feb/March, please see the pinned topic in Aus NZ forum about 'NSW police check'
The new way, fast way is to do it online only for the form, then take your documents, form to the local police station when they can do your fingerprints, they don't accept bookings, so you have to check by phone before going every now and then.

Yeah Feb-April Sydney consulate was slower than usual, don't know about now.

Australia and New ZealandKiwi wanting to wed in US without immigrating
from what I read from this forum and other places (may not be 100% true), but from the immigration officer who questioned me when i entered USA on VWP the second time (with no strong ties to my home country, and i'm saying i'm staying here for 90 days with my bf, and i visited him 3 months ago), HE said it's easier to get married outside USA then come back in with spouse visa.

and how different states in USA see a foreign marriage certificate to be enough as a 'change of name' proof when the non-USC is applying for different things in the US in the future. and vice versa in New Zealand, they may not recognise the US marriage cert to be enough proof for change of name.

however I'm not sure who is the USC (if any) in necias' question, the more i read it.

Australia and New ZealandKiwi wanting to wed in US without immigrating
Wedding ceremony in USA or Wedding and signing papers (get marriage certificate) in USA? these two can be quite different.

and where you two get marriage certificate impacts quite a lot on how easy for him (kiwi) to go to USA in the future for green card, not so much for work permit I think.

Australia and New ZealandAustralia Police Clearance

The online form gives a similar option. However when i spoke to this lady at the local police station she said it cant be sent to a personal address, it has to be sent directly to the embassy. My query is when you applied for the police clearance did you get it delivered to your address or to the embassy. If you did have it delivered to the embassy did you wait till you received your case number/packet 3 and then applied or did you forward it without the case number.

By the way I am from Sydney, NSW.

Hi

I am from Sydney, NSW.

I put my address, i don't want them to send it to embassy directly.
I booked my medical BEFORE I knew my case number, but case number came before the medical date. i started the police check BEFORE I know the case number, i think.

mine asked me if i wanna send it to the embassy or another address. it is said on the paper form i think, NOT sure if it is also on the online form.

also depends on the state I think. Im in NSW.

Australia and New ZealandNSW Police check - so difficult!

Hi Athena,

I'm hoping you can answer my question, I'm waiting on my police certificate, I had my fingerprint check done last week on Wednesday at Balmain, the fingerprints were done the old fashioned messy way with ink, but I registered online. Its the last thing I'm waiting on before I can send in my packet 3, so I'm getting a little antsy about it (I wish I'd done it several months ago!) - even though they say that it takes a minimum of 15 days, I'm hoping I'll be lucky. When you called Parramatta, did you just give them your name? or did you need your case/receipt number? I don't want to call unnecessarily, but I do want to check on the progress, peace of mind kind of thing.

I know I'm probably fussing, but I'm at the pointy end and starting to get more fidgety.

p.s - I met my guy on eharmony too, yours isn't trying to send in a 'success story' too is he?

?? hi :o) haha i was extremely fidgety too at that stage! When i called Parramatta, i gave my name and document ID (I think you get that when you register online). I can't remember fully, but there is also the receipt No on the receipt, however i don't think i used it. Phone number: 8835 7888.

hehe yes eHarmony, we were talking about sending our story to them when were at the engagement stage :star: but we haven't done anything yet, too busy with paperwork and everything. Early next year maybe we'll send in our story.

Yay I got it today!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday I called Parramatta again, another lady checked for me it is really posted out and it was processed really quickly (if they count the online form time, it's only one day!!!!) but normal mail took 2-3 days.

Im happy now! and relieved~~~~~ Thank God~~~

Update: OK She didn't call me back. I called her back at 2pm, after few minutes on hold and got transferred twice, she said it's sent out on Fri March 9! It's processed and they sent it via normal mail and i should get it soon! She apologised for the wait and said their new system is not showing my name for some reason and she read out my address correctly. So i guess i will wait now! Although I still don't believe her 100%.

see if i get it tomorrow...............I believe it's in God's hands.

Wow seems like Sydney Consulate and NSW police are stuffing up lately (from reading the forum). I haven't tried emailing Consulate yet but i will for some issues.

Today i called Parramatta Police check again, Julie answered. I said i submitted a paper form on March 1 and an e-form last Thur, and it's for American Visa, and she can't find my form! On Thur afternoon, her colleague Rhonda said she got it, it's all good now, she will send it upstairs on Friday and asked me to call back on Monday. Now it's Monday and this is what I got!?!??!?!?!?! It's not there again????? Julie asked my number and said will call me back later, since Rhonda is not in today. Geez..............

wow serious? But I got some police checks (without fingerprint) and working with children check (valid til mid 2012) from Aus and UK, dated 2009-2011 to show Consulate first that i have a clean history.

anyway i did the electronic version (3rd lady in Parramatta told me to) and it's in the system now. i will call them again on Monday.

Australia and New ZealandNSW Police check - so difficult!
As I mentioned in my other post NOA2, it took me several days to 'get an opportunity' to go into local police station to get my fingerprint taken and gave them my P800 form. This was done last Friday March 1. They said they will fax and mail my form to Parramatta.

Today Thur March 8th, i called Parramatta, they first lady can't find it. I called local police asking if they faxed and mailed it, they said they did, mail goes out 6am every morning. I called Parramatta again, they said they found it but it's in paper form, it's in the queue, and it's slower. They do online forms now (fill in form online, then make appt with local police, then go there to pay and get fingerprint taken), it's much faster. I have to wait 10-15 working days from today to get it done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At the local police station, i said it's urgent!!!! and no one told me it can be done online!?!?!?!

What can I do? my medical is next Tue 13th, i wanna make my packet 3 on Tue with police check. Now can I put a note in pkt 3 regarding this issue and bring the police check to the interview?????

Flanders: Did you provide your own platinum express envelop? I didn't know there were other VJs who had interview on the same day (in Aus or NZ). I think if you saw the other ones got theirs in a week, they might be outside Aus and yes they are quicker than us...... Aus is somehow very slow in every step it seems.....eh....bad for us. :crying:

Danneh: yeah the new system seems like we don't need to provide them with an envelop. I wanna pick mine up in person, but I can only ask them this on the interview day, next Tue!

Do NOT drive in the city!!! Unless you wanna pay high parking fees and put up with the stress and wait.

There's the free 555 bus in Sydney CBD now, so anywhere CBD is fine, particularly i know there are some hostels near Central Station, so any hotels or hostels near Central/some part of Surry Hills, Townhall, Wynyard, Circular Quay train station is fine, or on George St, Elizabeth St in the CBD is fine.

Australia and New ZealandGood social site/forum in Australia and USA?
To have my OT career in USA, as an OT graduate from Sydney Uni 2001-2004, I really need to connect to people who studied Occupational Therapy in Sydney University from 2001-recent and is wanting or already registered to work in USA. SOOOOOO hard to find them. I looked everywhere online, Linkedin (not sure how to use it fully and i'm not paying for membership), some forums, indeed (somehow helpful). There just doesn't seem to be a place where they connect or gather.

NBCOT is too strict now and you can't talk to anyone for answers, just general email answers. My uni is so bad, I can't believe it, such a big reputable university.

I was able to connect to 20 of my former classmates on Facebook but they don't have the documents I need.

what's a good Aussie forum that has general discussions on things? looking for people? or medical related fields? Lots of traffic is a must.

What is a good USA forum that has a lot of traffic on a broad range of topics?

Please let me know, thank you!~~~~

Australia and New ZealandSUPERANNUATION

wow god to know! thank you austex! i better call my super and find out soon.

Hi Guys,

One thing to be aware of, with the new superannuation laws coming in July and you don't touch your superannuation the government can take your super if it is under $2000. Also I called my super company "Sunsuper" and they told me that if I didn't make a donation once a year the Government can take that as well because it will be classed as delinquent and nobody owns it and they take it. So the guy said just just make a donation to it once a year.

So just something to think about and put that in your diary one a year to out money into your super even the smallest amount.

M.
