We passed! Woo hoo! Am on my future brother-in-law's computer with a weird UK keyboard, so will write more later. It took forever (8:30-12:30) but was easy at the end. We asked about the same-day visa pick-up and they said no way--they're contracted with SMS. In fact, they said 5 days was the minimum due to processing times. I'll keep you posted on actual arrival!

We just booked with Excess Baggage in Birmingham. They have a depot in Birmingham New Street (which is about a 5 minute walk from our flat), but decided that we'd have them come pick it up anyway since Spurs has a LOT of books and CDs to ship in addition to the rest of our stuff. We have 6 2-cubic foot boxes and 3 3-cubic foot boxes and I think the estimate was around £350 (perhaps a bit higher). They'll deliver directly to our house in Ohio in 4 to 12 weeks.

You might have an easier time if you repack some of the stuff into boxes so that it's lighter--that might make finding a company who can help easier.

United KingdomIs this really a cultural difference?
I have two beloved cats. The older one, Paka, is 8, fat, snaggletoothed, crosseyed, and, unfortunately, declawed. When I got him as a kitten in Louisiana, I took him to the vet to be spayed (neutered? I can't remember which is for the fellas). Anyway, the vet told me that it was standard practice to declaw at the same time. I didn't know any better, so I went with it--now, I regret it, but what's done is done.

My second cat, Lucky, is 2, normal sized, and a lovely black color. She's still fully in possession of her claws (and she's not afraid to use them).

Sadly, my new English husband is horribly allergic to them, so I have to find them new homes. This is, as you can imagine, devastating, but his reaction is truly awful (he's now on steroids and an inhaler, has to wear a mask in our house, and stays in the bedroom so he can avoid the dander/hair/saliva as much as possible). What's interesting is the only other time he's had this bad of a reaction is when he house-sat in Glasgow for a friend with indoor-only cats.

After talking with some other English immigrants, we are now thinking that the indoor-only approach to cats is what makes his allergies flare up so severely. When cats are allowed outside, he can deal. Of course, our current situation is too bad to wait until spring to test this theory (my cats have no interest in experimenting with the two feet of snow currently outside my house), but it's something to think about.

Tomorrow is Spurs-Villa at WHL. Those days are never good for us, so I'm now looking at that as our silver lining for this stupid miserable separation.

Spurs brought home last season's 4-4 debacle on DVD (Villa should have killed them but fell apart and they tied it up in the last moments of the game). He can't understand why I don't want to watch it! dry.gif

Spurs and I fly back tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. It's crazy--I can't believe this is all really happening! Of course, I just had a massive vent at our letting agent about our landlord here, so it's probably good that we're getting out of town before he can really make our lives miserable...

Not to wax too poetic, but I am really, really going to miss Birmingham. I'm looking out of our front window over the city centre--the new Town Hall, the clock tower, the library, and Victoria Square, and it's really, really beautiful. I hope we come back soon.

I don't think there's any way to NOT be nervous going in, but keep in mind that, at this point, it's extremely rare that anyone get turned down at London. Make sure your paperwork is in order, bring something to read to keep calm, bring some British money for the snack bar (it can get HOT in there!), and it'll be over before you know it. I can't wait to read about your results!!!

Whenever I go on vacation, I always have to stay linked in to work and participate in conference calls, answer emails, read reports, etc. As long as you aren't earning income from a Thai company, you should be fine.

No worries--I know how overwhelming it can be, and the whole K3/CR-1 thing makes it even more complicated. When my now-husband and I were going through the process it took a number of time re-reading the guides for it all to sink it, and now we're having to do it again for his Removal of Conditions. The more you learn about it, the easier it gets, so take your time and it will all work out! People on here usually are really helpful, so please don't hesitate to ask questions. Also, think about checking out a board that deals with your region/embassy--people there will have really great tips for you on how to make this process go as smoothly as possible and avoid potential pitfalls. We were lucky to go through London, a low-fraud consulate. Lagos, on the other hand, is a whole different story, so the more armed you are with information as you prepare, the better off you will be!

Good luck, and have faith--this will all be a memory some day!

TJ I really recommend reading through the guides linked above (click on "Guides" in the blue bar in the top). You can read through the K3 and CR1 processes and that will help you understand the difference. The CR1 is great--your spouse will be able to work, travel, etc. when he/she gets here.

As others have mentioned, the Lagos consulate is really tough for interviews, so spend the ensuing months collecting materials that demonstrate you have a bona fide relationship--call records, emails, etc. Also take lots of pictures in front of notable places when you are there, have photos with friends and families, etc. And be really, really glad you are going in March for a visit--what a wonderful way to help the time pass!

Also: your receipt that you received on 12/16 is the NOA1--I think the confusion came from the wording in your first post, which said that you had approval on the 16th. The approval of your petition will be your NOA 2. Hope that helps!

We just went through the interview on December 17, and they definitely looked for/checked the notary. We were right on the bubble, however, since I had the paperwork notarized the day after our NOA-2 came through, so it was before the new version came out (I think).

Hi everyone,

First off, I am normally a very calm and happy person and this is so unlike me. But USCIS have pushed me right to the edge and I can't cope anymore. I want to be back in the US with the man I love and they're doing everything they can to stop me.

It's not enough to charge us $455 just to file the initial I-129F, which is nothing but a REQUEST to ASK for a visa. They then have to reduce that fee, just a few weeks after we've filed it, for everyone else. It's not enough to charge me $350 for my interview, whether I get the visa or not. On top of £200 ($300) for a medical exam I could have for free with my own doctor - oh but no, it HAS to be YOUR doctor. When I arrive in the U.S. - assuming by that point I haven't wound up in a cell for storming the gates of the embassy with a gun - they want to charge me $1070 to fill out another form and have ANOTHER, completely unecessary but absolutely compulsory, medical exam.

First of all, I hope you get this all sorted out soon--I know how frustrating it is to feel like you are running around in circles!

Second, while I am probably being paranoid, I just want to caution you about posting what could be construed as threats against the U.S., even in a jokey context. There are rumors that these boards are monitored/checked, and while London tends to be a fairly easy consulate to move through, it's just never good to have a post about storming embassies out and about! Again, I'm sure I'm being paranoid, but it might be better to err on the side of caution.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionFreaking out!

Hello everyone! Just joined. I'm putting together my I-751 packet and I'm freaking out already. I don't think I have anywhere near enough "evidence." I would be very grateful for opinions from you guys. So far, apart from the I-751 form, cover letter and copies of GC & cheque, all I have is:

House Deed in joint name (this was done recently in september though, my husband added me as co-owner)

State & federal tax returns for 2009 & 2010

Copies of joint checking and saving accounts (only as far back as 6 months though)

Health insurance, my husband added me to his health insurance and I have medical bills with my name, address and member number but my name is not on the card as my husband is the subscriber. Is that a problem?

A couple of photos, one of us both at a family get-together with all his family.

Vet bills with both our name and address on.

I am getting affidavits from the in-laws.

I DON'T HAVE:

Any car stuff as I don't have a driver license.

Absolutely no other insurance.

No utility bills as my husband sees no need to add me to them as he pays the bills. He is very stubborn and thinks I am freaking out over nothing and because our marriage is genuine he thinks it will be no problem! I disagree and feel very angry he never added me to any utility bills despite me asking several times. Please help, am I screwed?


Hi Faery--I don't think you are screwed at all. It's a much bigger deal to be joint owner of a house than on an electric bill, you have joint taxes, joint bank accounts... that's all great evidence of financial co-mingling. As far as the health insurance goes, I think it's typical for only the person who's primary on the policy to be listed on the cards (at least it is in my experience). Being able to show you used that insurance is excellent. I know you said you don't have a license, but do you have a state-issued ID? Sending photocopies of official documents with a shared address is supposed to be helpful as well!

One last piece of advice: try not to freak out too much about this. I got really worried when putting our packet together since we hadn't gotten around to putting my husband on our house, the cars were in my name, etc. (Granted, this was in part because we were overwhelmed with babies born in March 2010 and May 2011!). We were approved earlier this week and received his 10 year GC today! If you have a bona fide relationship you'll be fine, even if you do have to go to an interview. Good luck!!

We sent in one picture, and that was just because our kids looked really cute in it. We were approved in three months with no interview. I don't think the picture made a difference at all. To disagree with a poster above, it's actually much harder to fake a "paper trail" of lives together--things like co-ownership of vehicles and homes, mortgages and loans, etc. are much harder to "fake" (and to extricate yourself from if real). I have almost no experience with PhotoShop, but even I can shop together a picture of me with someone else in front of a recognizable monument. The other stuff--which can be followed up on with phone calls and the like--is much more reliable in terms of indicators of bona fide relationships.

Bear in mind when you call that they have no reason to believe you sent the requested materials, particularly since you don't have any evidence of sending it. I would pull everything together again ASAP so you have it on hand if they give you a chance to send it in. Have you looked at the forms they told you to file to reopen the case? What do they ask for? Having all of that ready ASAP is essential.

I can't say for certain, but I don't think a sexually transmitted disease like HPV/genital warts would keep someone out of the country. According to some estimations, upwards of 80% of sexually active women in the States have had HPV at some point in time (some strains eventually "disappear"). Plus, the medical exams don't conduct STD tests, so if the warts are burned off, how would they even know? There's action in Congress right now to lift the HIV ban, so something like genital warts pales in comparison...

I sent our application packet out last week and paid a ridiculous sum to ensure that a signature would be required for delivery (so that I could make sure it was in someone's hands). I checked the site today and saw that they delivered it with "no signatory available" on Saturday. Is there any way for me to make sure it was actually received by the CSC other than waiting for the check to cash? Looking at people's timelines, it looks like it could take more than a week for checks to be deposited, and I would rather resend something ASAP if it's going to be lost in the shuffle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

While this won't make you guys feel any better, the dates have moved UP for California people overall--the Centers are evening out in terms of how long they are taking to process petitions (although you guys are still faster).

The timeline estimates are based on VJ data so they are not necessarily accurate--it's not USCIS estimating dates--so if a Center is super productive one week and approves a ton of petitions, we'll see the results of that on here and timelines will move up. During "slow" periods like this, they'll get longer.

Is the rest of the message saying that they tried to mail something to you but it was returned by the post office, you have 180 days or they will throw everything out, etc.? If that IS the case, try to figure out what it is--looking at your timeline, it might be an RFE or your NOA2! Call the 1-800 number on the email--they can tell you (hopefully) what it is.

Hi guys...

Only K3 situations were transferred between VSC and CSC, so no worries on that front. You're still within the normal processing times (right now, USCIS considers cases from Feb. 2 on to be the outer date for processing times), so they probably won't do much for you. Right now, you should just sit tight and keep your eyes peeled for an approval!

If either of you let depression set in, then it can be passed on to the other and then you both loose hope. Don't let yourself or him loose hope.
