I laughed at that this morning when I saw the commercial, and almost spit out my tea. My mom got the Slap Chop for Christmas, and need to ask her about his nuts laughing.gif

CanadaGreat Christmas Gifts You've Gotten?
Hubby did good with the gifts this year smile.gif He's always worried about pleasing me with gifts when he should know by now that it doesn't matter.

From my parents, we got $300 and I got one of the Vancouver 2010 zippered sweatshirts (red)...I LOVE it! Plus the Mittens and my aunt gave us one of the blankets that HBC is selling (goes well with the one I bought in Oct wink.gif )

All in all, both John and I did well with the gifts, and are thankful for everything we received smile.gif

Oh and to the person who got a SNES and had to wait 3 days to play it....I got the NES system for Christmas one year, we left for Florida on Christmas Day and I couldn't bring it with me. I had to wait 2 WEEKS to play with it! laughing.gif

Don't Smoke! Don't even think about it.

Reason: My mom is now on a lung transplant list, from having asthma and smoking for 35 years which ultimately turned into COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) which means, for the past 8 or so years, any time she caught a cold she ended up in the hospital with pnuemonia, ended up on oxygen, and now on the list.

You know how hard it is to breathe when you have a chest cold? Imagine it 3 or 4 times worse, and that's how she is every day (less than 20% lung function).

So...I know I sound like an afterschool special. But please, if you want to live, don't smoke.

BTW, my mom is going to be 56 tomorrow, and she's one of the youngest on the list with her condition :(

Good luck with that! :)

John and I are on a debt reducing diet right now as well. We want to have a nice savings for a downpayment for a home when we go to buy one.

J&K: That sounds like a terrible experience! I hate to say it, but I think you just hit some really bad luck yesterday. I've flown NWA dozens of times through the years and I've seriously never had 1 issue. No flight was ever delayed over 2 hours, I never missed a connection and they never lost my luggage. I've always been a big fan of their service since I started using them to visit my husband (then boyfriend) back in 2005. I'd suggest not letting this bad experience turn you away from them forever!

Oh when it hits, I'm usually the queen of bad luck laughing.gif

There were a couple of good notes...being able to go up to the front of the line, the lady from Delta who was able to change my flight from NWA to Delta, another Delta employee changed my seat from 14D to 3B (a bulkhead with no one beside me) because my connection was only 30mins after I landed in Cinci, the gentleman taking the bags at Sky Check when I got on the plan to go to Cinci put it near the front, again because my connection was so close, and, most importantly the fact that my luggage made it on the same flight as me biggrin.gif

So, there were some good things.

And true, I'm here, and I hope nothing else goes wrong.

Plus, tomorrow I get to go to one of my favourite places in the world. Duke's Sports Store in Toronto to try on and customize some new goalie gear biggrin.gif

Greetings from Ontario!

I was going to Vent about my trip up to Canada, but I didn't get home until almost midnight.

But...since I'm here safely, I'll give you the non-vent, short version of what happened:

Arrived at Dulles at 8:00am for my 10:00am flight to Detroit on NorthWest Airlines to connect to Toronto to arrive at 2:10pm.
We leave Dulles, hear a really loud and not normal sound when the landing gear is going up. Turns out there's something wrong and we have to return to Dulles....but we can't right now because we're too heavy and have to burn fuel. So we fly around for 45minutes and then return. Needless to say, I wasn't going to make my connection.
I get off the plane, to pick up my skychecked luggage, of course, it's the last one off, and I'm last in line to rebook. Bad. Good: International flights get to go to the front of the line.
Rebooked for a flight at 12:45pm leaving for Detroit with a 4hour layover before leaving for Toronto to arrive at 7:30pm.
Parents find a better flight on Delta (who is merged with NWA) leaving Dulles to Cincinatti, to Toronto to arrive at 6:00pm.
So they rebook me on that flight. Yay.

Finally leave Dulles at 2:45pm arrive in Cincinatti with no problems. Make my way over to my connecting gate with about 20minutes before boarding.
Get on the plane, getting ready to go and they say "We're having issues with weight on the plane...are there any volunteers to rebook?" No...of course not. So the lady at the gate comes back on and curtly says: "Since no one volunteered, you're all going to have to deplane and this flight is delayed for about an hour"
GREAT

I was livid and everyone on that plane knew it laughing.gif

So they need 7 people to volunteer to rebook...and if I was on my home to Virginia, I would have done it in a heartbeat, but I just wanted to get to Toronto to see my parents.
So they have 6...and the same lady who deplaned us says, "If we don't get one more, I'll have to do an involuntary bump" and with my luck...it would probably have been me.

So, thankfully they got someone else.

We get on the plane, and we finally leave for Toronto, for me to arrive at 7:00pm, 5 hours after I should have been there, and I got on a plane 4 times when it should have been 2.

Oh, and I wasn't even offered a food voucher, but I did hear "we're sorry for the inconvenience" about a million times.

Not a fan of NWA or Delta now. Should have driven up, it would have been quicker laughing.gif

Oh well...so that's my story, I'm here now, and on Wednesday I get to have more Delta and connection fun to get back to Dulles. Wish me luck biggrin.gif

I know it's weird but sometimes I'll just apply to jobs and go to interviews with no intention of actually working at the place. I just like sitting there and answering their questions and asking my own.

So....last weeks interview for the Pro Shop was a farce and I'm glad that I 'didn't' get the job.

Managers were completely unprofessional in that they didn't show up for the interview! I got a lame excuse as to why they couldn't come. Plus, if the excuse were true, they should have phoned to cancel it, or have the balls to tell me the exact reason why I wouldn't fit. I have an idea why, but whatever. So I drove over an hour, to be there for less than 5minutes. Complete waste of time, energy and money. Me = angry that day.

BUT I always believe that something good can come from anything. When I got back home, I had a message from BB&T. I had gone to a jobfair in Winchester, VA which at the time seemed like a waste of time for me personally as most of the jobs you needed a security clearance. Well, I did happen to hand in my resume to a representative from BB&T and chatted with them. I was supposed to still apply online though, which I didn't, and no excuse for not doing so.
I guess my personality or whatever must have impressed, because even though I didn't apply, my resume got passed to HR in Falls Church, VA and they called.
I phoned back the next day (I had called the day before but they had left already) and it was basically like an interview over the phone...or more like a phone screen. I Still would have to apply online. Which I did this time *pat on the back* laughing.gif

I *LOVE* the assessment tests they have for jobs like that. My favourite part is the morality questions where you have the strongly disagree to strongly agree answers.
Here was my favourite one "Have you ever lied to parents?" rofl.gif
I bet that one is put in there to throw people who don't really read them. Or to weed out the complete brown nosers laughing.gif

So anyway, that was last wednesday, and today I got a call from one of the branches close to me about my interest in one of the positions they had, and I have an interview with them tomorrow smile.gif
I hope this one turns out better. It's for a Teller position part-time with the opportunity for more than the minimum hours, and crosstraining in other positions, so perhaps the opportunity to move up in the company. Oh and it comes WITH benefits! Which I don't have now.
Plus, it's closer to where I live that that 'other' job so I can do my IT job in the morning, and make my way back towards my town. So while both are part time, I can be making more money to save for our house...or a WWII jeep, whichever comes first biggrin.gif

I'll let you all know how it turns out!

So the interview went well yesterday.

I have a follow up interview on Monday with the Manager who makes the final decision. I think yesterday's interview was more of a "Lets see if this person can handle the job" type interview and if they make their recommendation maybe we'll hire her.

Because Kettler is where the Washington Capitals practice and hold events and such, all employees have to have extensive background checks. I told him I've passed quite a few, so you shouldn't have a problem with me laughing.gif

One of the questions he asked was How would you react if Alex Ovechkin walked into the Pro Shop. I told him that would be pretty cool, but I wouldn't freak out like a crazy fan or anything....my husband on the other hand though... whistling.gif
He laughed.

So we'll see how monday goes!

You know, it's funny, just last week I was telling John how cool it would be to work for the Caps in some capacity...and in a way, this job would be! Kind of cool smile.gif

LOL I buy most of my stuff when I visit my parents in Ontario laughing.gif The last two times I crossed the border, they asked "Anything to declare?" Me: "hockey equipment" biggrin.gif
But, being able to pass along any knowledge to folks who may be new to the sport (like the guy on Saturday will be worth it). Alexander Semin was using the ice this Saturday...he didn't travel with the team to play the Islanders because of the flu.

I'm the only Canadian 'playing' on the team. Our coach is from Fort McMurray.
We used to have two more, but one moved to Bahstan, and the other moved back to Canada...hubby was military and attached the Embassy in DC at one point.

It's part time for a pro shop at the arena where I play and where the Washington Capitals practice (Kettler for those who live around there)

It was funny...I had a game on Saturday, and John wanted to try on some shoulder pads. Another fellow was there doing the same thing and asked John "can I ask you some new guy hockey questions?" in which John said, 'You'd better ask her!' laughing.gif

Helped the guy out and said, you should work here!

So I asked if they were hiring and they were...so I applied and got an email today for an interview tomorrow! Yippee!

So the job fair yesterday, almost seemed like a waste of time.

First, it was so crowded it took me 10 minutes to just turn around and find a parking spot on the side of the road. Then it was so packed that it was lined up outside the door. Thankfully, yesterday was a nice sunny day and not too cold. Finally got inside to find only about 20 different employers, where half of them required citizenship or a clearance.

So I went to a staffing place...they were looking for "IT Positions" That's all it said, nothing more. So the person says to me, "Do you qualify for any of these?" I said, "Sure do!" gave him my resume and he starts reading it and asks, "What type of clearance do you have?" I explained none because of not being a citizen yet. "Oh, well the IT Position requires a Top Secret Clearance. We'll keep your resume on file" and just plops it upsidedown on the chair beside him. BS you will...didn't even ask me where I would be willing to travel to like he did the woman who had been ahead of me.

So I went to Aflac who were looking for "Account Reps" Which I guess in their world means "Sales" I don't have experience in sales, and I can't lie to people just to make them buy something.
I have an interview, but I'm just going to cancel it...they were giving them out to anyone.

Finally, BB&T which were hiring Tellers...the rep that was there was really nice, and took my resume and actually listened to me. But, you have to apply online.

Most, if not all the jobs available there were online applications! I could have done this all from the comfort of my computer like I have been trying to for the past 2 months. Grrrr...

Oh well, lesson learned.
