CanadaDoes anyone have DirectTV instead of Comcast?
QUOTE (thetreble @ Oct 5 2009, 09:10 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Well one thing I did notice was that the dish network gives you the option to either go on a contract or not. Which, obviously, we would not!

J & K, I already called Comcast actually to get a price reduction a few months ago which we did. All of our promotions had ended and I got a bill for $260.00. Come one..for two tvs, the internet and the phone?? The phone and the internet are only 30 bucks combined. It's the TV that is horrible.

I got her down to about $160.00/month, but that was getting rid of my DVR and all the special channels except for HBO and the Fox Soccer Channel.

But, I can't live without the DVR..I tried over the summer, and it was easy because there is nothing to watch, but now that all the shows have come back my husband and I like to watch quite a few of them certain nights of the week that are on at the same time.

So, I got my DVR back.

They just nickel and dime you at comcast. I mean I know most companies do that, but I find them equatable to Rogers or Bell. They charge me 6 bucks a month on top of the $9.99 for the regular HD Box, and $14.99 for the HD DVR box, for an "HD Conversion Charge". I mean, come on... between the phone/internet modem and the boxes, they cost me like $40.00 a month!

I don't know..

Holy #######!
I have 2 HDTVs and internet and I have all of the specialty channels, plus HBO, Showtime, Starz, DVR Service and 2 HD/DVR boxes and all I'm paying is $107/month! Now granted...I have my own Modem so I don't pay for the modem charge, and I have vonage which is only $33 a month...so all together I'm paying $140/month for all three.

Why the heck are they charging you for an HD Conversion???? I don't have that charge at all!
Maybe because it's a difference area of Comcast...I know that they have different promotions for different things.

I know that when our promotion ends (which I have had extended twice now) I always threaten to cancel the service and go with another company, but I've been happy with Comcast and really don't want to do it, but if it's going to save me money, yadda yadda yadda the service rep usually gives in and gives me a really good deal laughing.gif

I would try calling them now anyway, and see if they can do any better, or you're going to switch to DirectTV...see if that will light a fire up their butt to keep you as a customer!

J&KFemaleCanada2009-10-05 10:22:00
CanadaDoes anyone have DirectTV instead of Comcast?
Just curious as to what you're paying for what service with Comcast. I'm with them and have no motivation to switch....yet laughing.gif

I originally went with Comcast because with DirectTV they pull your credit during the application, and at the time John's credit was horrible, and I didn't have any history, so I didn't want to have to pay an outrageous down payment.
Comcast offered a "Double Play" of Cable and High Speed Internet for $66/month which was only their digital classic channels. Then we got more channels and I think it brought it to $85/month then we got a HDTV and had to upgrade the digital box to an HD box, then Hubby wanted more channels...soon we were paying $105/month.

So one day I called to see about downgrading...and the lady on the phone actually figured out that we could get a different promotion, get Showtime, Starz, HBO, etc for the exact same price that we were already paying!

I went for it!

Try calling Comcast to see if there are any promotions going on and if they can reduce your monthly bill in any way.
They don't want to lose you as a customer, so if you ask you might just be surprised at what might happen smile.gif

My mom and Aunt went there, still friends with some of her high school buddies.

She loved Monarch...my dad went to Parkdale.

They always remember one teacher who I guess it's been within the last 10 years, they found out to be a child molestor...I'll have to ask her what his name was!

She always points him out in her yearbook...said he was always kind of creepy.

Born in Toronto, raised in Oshawa. My parents were both born and raised there, and always talk about the 'good ole days' of Toronto...but now they hardly recognize it and it actually saddens them.

My mom lived near Coxwell and Danforth, and my dad was in the west end at Queen and Roncesvalle.

I loved going into the city to see my grandparents (when they lived there) or taking the train in and walking around Queen and Yonge.

Going to Skydome (I don't care that it's called Rogers Centre now, it will always be Skydome to me!)

Hearing my dad tell all these stories about different places (he was a postman in Toronto for many years before going out to Oshawa and Ajax).

In fact, he worked at Station A which became the Air Canada Centre.

Do I miss it? Sometimes, for the busy lifestyle. I live in a VERY small town in Northern Virginia called Berryville...or as I like to call it MAYBerryville. We have 1 Andy and 6 Barneys.

But, it give John and I plenty of opportunity to go out and see other parts of the area we live in and explore.

CanadaBridezilla Update...(I think I'm OK posting this here...)
I think regarding the assets in this marriage, she's screwed.

according to An Overview of Equitable Distribution in NJ

"New Jersey is an equitable distribution state which means that, in the event of a divorce, the marital property is not automatically split 50-50. Rather, equitable distribution is defined as the division of marital assets in a manner that is fair but not necessarily equal.

New Jersey courts have developed a three step process to distribute assets. First, the court will identify which assets are subject to distribution. Assets included in an equitable distribution may range from the marital home, a business, bank accounts and automobiles to stock options, pensions, bonuses and lottery winnings. Generally, courts have defined marital property to be property acquired by either or both spouses from the date of marriage to the filing of the divorce.

I think a judge is going to laugh at her for asking for so much in just 2 weeks of marriage.

First off...I hope you can bring character witnesses to this, as I'm sure there will be people lined up out the court doors to defend your BIL.
Second, Karma...all I can say is KARMA...and I hope if comes back to haunt her over and over laughing.gif

Me too!

Been applying like crazy to jobs, but haven't had much success.

At this point I'd love a full time job. Even if it were for half of what I'm making an hour now, I'd be making the same amount at the current job working only 24 hours/week!

BUT at least it would be a full time job with probably extras like benefits or a 401(k) which I don't get now.

Oh I can definitely relate Sam and Bren!

I am very grateful to my friend / boss for giving a job 2 years ago, as it was getting desperate for my husband and I...but now I'm regretting it, big time.

I need to find something else, or either a) I'm going to insane b ) Money is going to run out (being made even MORE part time than before...at 8hours a week) or c) I'm going to go insane laughing.gif

He is a horrible manager, and terrible at his own job.

I'm still waiting for an expense check from the end of Sept!

Kathryn,

I too had problems like that a few weeks ago with my practically brand new computer. Kept having the blue screen of death, and driver issues.

Turns out...it was a microsoft update for Vista.

I went in and removed any updates that had happened since the last one, and it fixed the problem.

Now I only let updates happen when I want them too.

You might want to try that to relieve yourself of the frustration until 7 shows up smile.gif

Speaking of doing nice things for others...

Tonight at Ethan's hockey practise this kid on his team was all frazzled about his skates not being sharp. He was upset last week because they weren't sharp, and apparently his parents are never around because they have like 7 kids and are busy. So I tell him to give me his skates and I run over to sharpen them. Well Mike gets all upset about it saying: "Is his parents going to give you $8.00 back for that?"

Umm no, it's $8.00... who cares, his parents are obviously not here to do this and its been an issue since last week.. I don't mind.

It sure made Mike crabby though. He told me he hates that I do stuff like that and that I need to toughen up. laughing.gif

Oh when you put it that way.... I think I will write a letter! It shouldn't be up to us to pay their share of the water, all those extra showers, laundry loads, toilet flushes, etc. So not cool. It sucks how the bill is split it half, not sure why. The water company sends a bill to the landlord each month since she owns the duplex, then she sends us each a bill of half the cost, I don't think there is anyway to seperate the bill (must come from the same 'line' or something) I'm tired of being Mr. nice guy laughing.gif I'm SURE if the landlord knew this many people would have moved in, she never would have rented to this woman

The other place we lived was a 10 apartment antebellum mansion that was heated by Oil, both the radiators and the water.
Now, water was paid for by the landlords (not that cheap in our little town, so I took a lot of baths when they ticked me off tongue.gif) but the oil was split by all of the tenants (she split it by 10 even if all the apartments weren't occupied). Well, to make a long story short, one of the tenants was having an issue with his radiator, and one was never home, and was in fact living in DC with a girlfriend, but kept his windows open in the winter time! Our Oil bills were through the roof! I think for one month we all ended up paying $350/tenant to cover the cost. blink.gif
I hate Oil and will never live in another place with it. If we do end up finding a place that is heated by oil we'll convert to propane, or a heat pump.
So, I feel your pain!! Oh, and I'd 'squeal' biggrin.gif

I used to hate when my landlords would go into the apartment when we weren't home. Sure, they have a right to (as long as they inform you beforehand) but still...gives me the willies!

I'm so glad we're renting a house now, and the only time my landlords have had to come in is when they installed a new thermostat, or their daughter took care of the furballs laughing.gif

My husband was just laid off. I've no idea what we're going to do now.

I'm pretty sure that they laid him off because of one particular jerk that works there. This guy has even called to harass us at home because he dislikes Phil so much. Unfortunately, he's got his head stuck so far up the owner's backside that he gets whatever he wants. Heck, he's been getting away with taking credit for other people's work for years.

This is going to be hell I just know it.

I had to ask my boss if my next two paychecks were going to bounce (he's already bounced 2 on me this year, which was NOT fun to deal with).
On monday I'm going to ask my boss straight up why he didn't just put me on unemployment. If he needs the hours, he can take mine, while I collect and look for a new job.

This week has probably been the worst in my life, and I'm hoping it only gets better...meaning, I hope I have hit rock bottom so I can make my way back up again sad.gif

I just got laid off (ok, not completely) but cut back to just 8HRS a week!

I can't believe it, as it was out of the blue, and I'm ticked off at my boss who did it in a not so nice way.

He should have just laid me off completely...at least then I could have applied for unemployment. But, then his taxes would have gone up. Which makes even more angry, because he's looking out for himself only.

He's a friend too! I should have never started working for him 2 years ago.

So I'm on the hunt for ANYTHING.

We usually buy a toy for Toys for Tots for John's work. But this year, we went a little further. We bought 2 toys for Toys for Tots, and we adopted 2 kids from the Angel Tree that his work sponsored.

Two Kids who got what they asked for, and then some. Made us feel really good. I could have spent the money on us, but the feeling we got from being able to do something good, was probably the best present of all smile.gif
