US Citizenship General DiscussionQuestion
Your passport should have the stamps of return date to the US which should help. Just be truthful in your interview about how long each trip was. USCIS is just concerned if any trip lasted for more than 6 months.

US Citizenship General DiscussionReceived two I-797C forms....

Thank you for your response. I notice that you completed the entire journey successfully within a very short time period. Is it common in SF area? I thought California has even more population than New York - am I expected to have everything done in 3-4 months as well?

It depends where you filed. If you filed in NY it may be longer. In San Francisco & San Jose they seem to be in warp speed processing N-400 applications (less than 3 months from filing to Oath), but Southern California seems to be a month or so behind. It helps to check out different N-400 filing groups to kind of gauge how others are doing. I'm in the January N-400 group. Good luck on your journey! Posted Image

US Citizenship General DiscussionReceived two I-797C forms....

Last week I received my first I-797 notice scheduling my biometrics appointment. I successfully did a walk-in yesterday. Surprisingly, I received another I-797 today showing the same appointment date as the first notice. Has anyone here had similar experience before? I assume these two are the same, although sent on different days. The USCIS online case inquiry matches the first notice.

It was probably just a duplicate in error. Either way since you did an early bio it should be fine. Posted Image

US Citizenship General DiscussionHow long after applying for passport were you able to check status online?

I applied for my passport at the beginning of April. I applied at the courthouse, not expedited, just normal service.

I checked the online status daily....it told me my passport application was being processed.

It told me the same thing this morning. An hour later, the mail lady brought my passport...just 2 weeks after I applied.

I just checked my application online, it's still telling me it's being processed.

The online status is as reliable as the USCIS online status!!:bonk:

But....I'm now the owner of a nice shiny blue US passport!!

How long did you wait until after you submitted your application for it change online? I applied for mine on the 9th and still no cashed check or status on the travel.gov website. I also applied for regular service vs. expedited. Hope my wait is just as speedy as yours!Posted Image

US Citizenship General DiscussionAfter citizenship oath can you travel with foreign passport

I was curious, how long does it take to get your first US passport? I mean if you do your oath ceremony today and you have an emergency abroad is it OK to travel immediately after the oath in and out of the US with a foreign passport even though you are a citizen?
Also I read that some people get their passport done the day of the oath ceremony, but that there are long lines for that. Are there any advantaged to getting it done the same say as your oath?

After becoming a US citizen (after taking your Oath) You cannot re-enter the US on a foreign passport. You MUST have a US Passport for any travel outside the US. If an emergency arises you can apply for an expedited (or even get a same day processing service) passport from the passport office and pay an additional fee. You must have proof of travel within 2 weeks in order to get this done. Proof being an itinerary from your upcoming flight. So I suggest applying for your passport ASAP after getting your citizenship. The advantage of applying for it at your Oath ceremony is that you know it is in the passport office's hands no waiting for confirmation (Make sure you take a picture of your naturalization certificate as your copy prior to enclosing it with your application. I used my iPhone for mine.) We've waited this long to obtain our US citizenship so a little "long" line at the ceremony for submitting a passport application is a cake walk! lol Posted Image Good luck with your journeyPosted Image

For your naturalization interview you go into it alone. Your wife can accompany you while you wait in the waiting room.

US Citizenship General DiscussionMarital Status, Citizenship and Taxes
For your marital status on your N-400 you should file as married as for the tax forms just change your status with your HR or accounting office as married so it is reflective as of this year. You should be okay. Filing taxes is the most important thing. You can always correct it if the IO has any questions during your interview.

US Citizenship General DiscussionWill I need status letter from Selective Services?
FYI: From the selective service site.

Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male immigrants living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service.
FlipgalRNFemaleCanada2013-04-18 20:29:00
US Citizenship General DiscussionWill I need status letter from Selective Services?

My husband was also in a similar situation and did need the letter. They asked for it at his interview and we were thankful we had it. Perhaps it varies with the interviewer...?

Unless he was a PR before the age of 26 he would be required to sign up for SS. If you are in any status except a non immigrant visa you must sign up. If you are 26 years of age or older when you arrive to the USA you can't even sign up for SS even if he wanted to. Between the ages of 18-26. 26 and older need not register.

NON-CITIZENS

Some non-citizens are required to register. Others are not. Non-citizens who are not required to register with Selective Service include men who are in the U.S. on student or visitor visas, and men who are part of a diplomatic or trade mission and their families. Almost all other male non-citizens are required to register, including undocumented immigrants, legal permanent residents, and refugees. The general rule is that if a male non-citizen takes up residency in the U.S. before his 26th birthday, he must register with Selective Service.

US Citizenship General DiscussionWill I need status letter from Selective Services?

I will be going to my naturalization interview next week. On the interview letter they ask for evidence of selective service registration. I didn't register with selective services because I move to the US after my 26 birthday. My 26th birthday was in August and I move here in Dec on K-1 visa and I became permanent resident in April of the following year.

Can anyone tell me if I might still have to provide the interviewer with a status letter from selective services?

Was anyone in a similar position?

No, you do NOT need a letter as you were 26 years of age already and were not eligible to sign up for selective service. My husband was in a similar situation (he turned 26 then received his PR 4 months later) Good luck with your interview!

US Citizenship General Discussionplan of action
What did the IO say the reason was for a delay in the decision? Usually they will let you know as well as give you an estimate as to when you will hear back from them. My husband had a delay in his case and was quoted 30 days (He heard he had passed and was placed in Oath que 15 days after his interview)

i have received 2 speeding tickets during the 10 years i have lived in the US. one was knocked down to driving without a seatbelt and the other was knocked down to parking out of alignment with the kerb. i am now applying for citizenship. under section 10, covering criminal record, am i expected to mention these? do they qualify as a 'crime or offense'?

thanks in advance for your help!

Be honest! Make sure you let them know about it on the form and you can clarify it at the time of your interview. Just bring proof of all fines being paid and it should be ok.

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 part 10 number 16

Hi,

My wife got a traffic violation for passing a stopped school bus, she has been throught with defered disposition and case is now dismissed, paid fine $425. Her driving record is cleared. My question is on part 10 #16
what is the input for why were you arrested, cited for? speeding ticket or passing a stopped school bus
outcome or disposition of the arrested or citation? defered disposition or dismissed

thanks

You must declare all violations. Be 100% truthful in everything on your N-400. I cannot stress enough to you how important that is. Our IO had known about my husband's past car accident without him even mentioning it. (It was not his fault we were rear ended) We had copies of his driving record as well as records from the city that he had no outstanding fines. Make sure you keep your receipts of having paid your fines because you may need to prove it to your IO. Just check yes for citations and you can explain in detail at your interview. Just be honest and you should have no problems!

US Citizenship General Discussionn-400 help

Hi guys. Thank you for reading and helping if you can.

I filed an N-400 for Naturalization and passed my fingerprints a few weeks ago. I am applying based on my marriage to an american girl(the sweetest one you will ever meet .
I got a yellow form in the mail that is "Pre-Interview Case File Review" that request more documents from me.
The documents that was requested was:

[X]Bring your state issued driver licence

[X]If you are applying for Naturalization on the basis of marriage to a US citizen, bring proof of termination of all previous marriages for both of you and your spouse(divorce decree, death certificate, etc. Registered by a civil authority)

The first one if pretty easy and I will bring my Driver licence.

My question is about the second request. Both of us was never married. We both marry each other the first time. So my question is what I need to bring if anything at all? Do I need to proof that we were never married and how do I do it? Or I just need to go and tell them that we both was never married and that's enough?

Thank you

All you have to do is just bring your DL. Since it's your first marriage for both of you there is nothing more to bring in regards of proof of prior marriages. You may want to bring your marriage certificate though.

US Citizenship General DiscussionPART 10 SECTION D

Please for your input...I already submitted my N-400 and marked all questions in this section with NO. But reading someone's post on here triggered my memory.
I was in a MVA accident in 2010 and I was given a ticket of $100+ for failure to yield at a stop sign. I paid the fine and that was it. It has since fallen off my record and my record is now clean....

I'm scared! Am I in trouble? I completely forgot about it!!!! What do I do?!?!?!

Go to your county court and have them print out a record showing no fines are outstanding. You may also want to get a copy of your driving record. Showing it is clear. You can explain this to your IO during your interview. We went through the same situation and we both passed in the end so you should be fine.

US Citizenship General DiscussionEvidence of Marriage

Good Day,

I'm a PR through fiance visa, and have lived in the States with my wife since 2007. I'm planning on applying for citizenship this Spring, and had a quick question. For the past 3.5 years we have lived in an apartment that we've paid month to month, with no lease. We have utility bills etc with both our names on that are addressed to our place, but I'm worried slightly that the lack of a formal lease might look suspicious. Is there evidence anyone would suggest to counter this? I'm thinking a notarized letter from the landlord and potentially our neighbors.

Many Thanks.

Make sure you have tax transcripts, usually the USCIS will ask for that. Getting a notarized letter from your landlord would help as well as all the bills with both your names on it.

US Citizenship General DiscussionPart 7: Time Outside the United States

All,

I am filling out form n-400 for my Citizenship. Part 7: Time Outside the United States, I cannot remember all dates I have been out nor do the passports help me.

Is there a public institution I can obtain that info? Maybe USCIS records? Or, would that be a huge issue if I enter estimated time?

Also, will I have an interview for the citizenship. I though I would have fingerprint and the Oath only.

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Best, Leo

You can do a rough estimate. You will be having a citizenship interview and during that time you can explain your situation. You must bring all your passports expired and current to your interview. The times you enter the USA they stamp your passport so you should have some record of it unless you drove across the border. In which case they still scan your passport. The most important thing about your N-400 process is that you are truthful on your application and during your interview. Do NOT omit anything as the USCIS will know your background beforehand. Good luck with your application. Posted Image

US Citizenship General DiscussionNaturalization Oath Ceremony

Well I have now received my Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony letter, however the ceremony that they have me going to is in Los Angeles, I had moved from Los Angeles to Kansas City Mo on the 19th of March and filed a change of address and received a confimation letter for that, and also the N-445 was addressed to my new home in Kansas City. Was wondering if I could still attend the ceremony in Los Angeles or do I have to make an infopass to have it changed to Kansas City Mo? Thanks

You can still attend the ceremony in LA..in a way it's better since then you won't have a delay in your citizenship.

US Citizenship General DiscussionUpdate SSN previous Getting Passport?

Hi,

I have to travel 3-4 days after my oath ceremony. I'm thinking to go the same day to get my passport in person.

The question is, Should I update the SSN (Social Security number) as citizen BEFORE getting the passport?

Thanks,

Javier

I would do the passport first since you are traveling soon after your Oath. You can update your SSN anytime after you get your passport.

Fast-forward, 2 infopass appointments later until last friday, when I got a call in the morning from USCIS asking me to show up on 5/8 (yesterday) for the oath ceremony,  thank God smile.png I'm now a happy US citizen,.

What was on his DMV?? Did they ask about tickets??

He had 3 tickets and 1 accident (Not his fault. We were rear ended) They did bring up the accident in the interview without him mentioning it. The last incident on his DMV record was back in 2004 so they really did their research on him to be bringing up the accident. Possibly checking to see if he'd be honest about it. We made sure to bring all his records stating they were clean as well as his DMV driving record to show the different dates of incidents to coincide with the county records. (Such a pain in the rear!) Hopefully we will hear back from them soon! Posted Image

I know that in my area they do their oath taking at paramount theater in oakland.

I checked their website and they have schedule of events calendar, it shows they have oath taking for us citizens on march 12 and 26.. basically twice a month

My interview is march 11.

Im pretty confident about my case.
Never had ceiminal record, no arrest, same work, same address, no travel

There is a scheduled oath taking on march 12

I was wondering If I could ask the consul if I can join the next day's oath taking assuming she won't mention it to me.
