It is so exciting to see people get their interview dates! Just a few steps closer to my fiance's paperwork that is at the Montreal Consulate as of last week. Yeah!

CanadaK-1 March Interviews !!!
So they actually do K-1 interviews on other days besides Friday. That is good news!

Congrats to everyone. I can't wait to see the rest of March fill up and April because soon after my fiance' should be on his way to the consulate for his K-1 interview. The date can't come quick enough!

CanadaPrescriptions of the 'Ladies Only' kind... ifyouknowwhatimean
Local health departments usually hand out free condoms, for the asking. They may be able to do a female exam and give you a prescription for the birth control pills (or put you in contact with someone who would do it based on a sliding income scale like Planned Parenthood does).

CanadaVisa has been printed, but not mailed.

They just called him back!!!!

He gets to pick his visa up tomorrow morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I'm so happy I could pee! :P

Hallelujah! Getting to pick it up is awesome since he does live so close!

CanadaVisa has been printed, but not mailed.

Well here's some FANTASTIC news!!!

He called the consulate and did the same thing that cookingzombies did, and he got his tracking number. The lady he spoke to was really nice and recognized his name because when they were processing the visas she said she thought "Finally! A name I can understand!" lol. But apparently he forgot to write the apartment number down on the envelope so they returned it to the consulate and it has been there since April 9th.

So now he has to call back today and see if he can go pick it up or if he needs to bring them a new envelope. If he's going to be down there already I don't see why he couldn't just pick it up.

But it looks like his planned POE and the wedding are gonna happen on time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wheeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, that is so good. Hopefully he will have it in his hands very soon!

CanadaVisa has been printed, but not mailed.

Annnnnddddd...he can't find it.

He was going to the post office closest to him to see if they had it and sent it back, but then he checked his bank account and there's a receipt number on his transaction list for that purchase. So he's going to return to the one he bought it from and see if they can look up the receipt and reprint it for him.

I'm crossing everything I've got for this to actually work.

I am praying he finds the receipt and/or that the package appears in his mailbox soon.

CanadaDS 230
My fiance' made a similar list to those noted above in Word in a table with the required information on the actual form. There were a couple where we said "summer 1974" since he couldn't remember and his parents couldn't remember specific dates. Plus back then a passport wasn't required for travel to the U.S. from Canada so I am not sure that the customs and border patrol would have any "specific" record of his entrance.

With the actual online form, SAVE OFTEN. We lost the list of travel and the list of educational institutions twice because the program times out so fast. Basically every time you switch pages, save the application to your harddrive so you won't have to type the information in AGAIN.

CanadaCanadians going to Michigan on K1

Yes, drove right over.

Excellent. My fiance' and I are planning to stay at a bed and breakfast near our wedding ceremony for 2 nights then leave on our honeymoon. We will go to get our marriage certificate before we leave, put teh AOS packet in the mail, then go on our honeymoon. Might as well let the government deal with our paperwork while we are enjoying ourselves. Hopefully by the time we get back, we will have our NOA1 from the Adjustment of Status.

We got married on a Saturday & we went in on Tuesday & got the license plus copies while we waitied.
**We would've gone Monday, but the Northville location only does it Tues & Thurs.

So you took it back to the county clerk's office directly?

How long did it take to get the certified copy of the marriage license after your weddings? I want to know how long after the wedding I will have to wait to file adjustment of status.

I think Secretary of State is so annoying! Sad to hear you can't get your drivers license in Michigan yet. Wait in long lines at the Secretary of State and then not get what you wanted in the end, that has been my experience. Changing my name once my fiance gets here from Canada (still waiting for an interview in Montreal) doesn't sound like much fun but I can't wait until I can do change it!

CanadaCanadians going to Michigan on K1
Only one person (the Michigan resident) has to be present to get the marriage license. The Michigan resident must have the appropriate documentation for the non-resident he/she will marry, but that person need not be present. It is good for 30 days and there is a 3 day waiting period to get the license.

I'll be moving to Michigan! Does anyone know if you can apply for the marriage license before having the K1 visa? According to what I read, you don't necessarily need the stamp. We would really like to get married the same day I move there so we would need the license in advance.

Contact your county clerk. I don't think you need the stamp. Michigan Marriage Laws The resident of Michigan can apply for the marriage license without the non-resident present as long as you have copies of the correct documents.

CanadaOMG... And she thought I was lying!!! **You're SO gonna laugh!**
I have been searching for information on banking and credit cards, RSPs, importing cars, drivers licensing, and Employment Insurance tonight and this thread made me laugh so hard! Wow, the whole attitude of "immigration can't cost that much you must be doing something wrong" is classic. Glad I stumbled upon the thread in my search for reading material for my fiance who keeps telling me, "Well, I am sure I can keep things as they are in Canada and just change my address." Um, no, you probably can't but here are other people's experiences. He has lots of reading ahead of him!

Edit: 76 pages back so far. I think I am almost done researching for the night.

CanadaK-1 visa fee payment

We paid in Canadian, Montreal accepts it just fine and the conversion rate seemed fair.

Thanks. Your interview wasn't too long ago so that makes me more confident to just tell him to have enough money to do the exchange. I am more of a "perfect change" kind of person. As long as he has the funds, then we are good to go.

CanadaK-1 visa fee payment
Did any of the recent K-1 visa interviewees pay in Canadian cash? My fiance' wants to use Canadian since the letter says he can. Any ideas which is best.

CanadaLate Nights on VJ?
Yeah, VJ gets a serious part of my day (not always at night) but probably an hour or two. Last night, i spent 2 hours scouring through posts back to Nov. 2009 about financial stuff, car importing, banking, etc because my fiance' has finally figured out that maybe it is time to start contacting people to see what he should do once he has his visa in hand which hopefully will be mid May after his May 3 interview.
lilacvioletirisFemaleCanada2010-04-23 13:34:00
CanadaAwaiting Packet 3
Yes, because being mailed means it has sent to the mail room, not necessarily sent out to Canada Post to you. Ours was mailed on March 17th but had March 23rd post mark and came a few days later than that.

CanadaHoneymoon...

I think that was my fiance's main idea: save on driving time to get there, extra hotel room for a night on the road, and save on gas. As he has been looking at the prices, we have seen that they truly aren't that different price wise, sadly. But somewhere other than where we will call home would be nice for a bit of time away.

We have found an awesome place to stay for a week. Since I am a Christian school teacher, this location gives us a discount price of $50 a night to stay in a 2 bedroom cabin in Roan Mountain, Tennessee.

Check out http://www.fairhavenministries.net/

If you or your fiance'/fiancee are a Christian worker (i.e. pastor, church school teacher, or other full-time church ministry worker or missionary), then it is $50 a night for a cabin. If you are not a Christian worker, then it is $70 a night for a cabin. The place looks perfect to "come and rest awhile".

I sent in my deposit today! My fiance' and I are going to stay there for a week. We have to make our own food but that is fine.

CanadaHoneymoon...

lilacvioletiris, my fiance is from MI and has shown me so many pics of places to go there, look beautiful... however I remember a while ago when we were planning a vacation for his leave (which he never got) we were looking at Northern MI and it was the same price to go more south in the US (but be on the ocean and tropical). Wasn't all that cheap. Unless you don't live too far then you can save on gas =) which is a big selling point.

CanadaHoneymoon...
My fiance' has booked us a two night stay in a bed and breakfast near our ceremony site. Third floor overlooking a lake with a jacuzzi. Not sure if or when we might take "more of a honeymoon" since mid-July is prime vacation time. We may go up to Northern Michigan. I just told my fiance' I would like a week away from my current home town. We will see how the finances go.

Canadamy daughter seemingly has no fear of US Immigration
That is good information. My fiance' will likely get his passport back with his K-1 visa before he wants to move in July but he wants to come for the Victoria Day holiday in May. Thanks for the heads up.
lilacvioletirisFemaleCanada2010-04-28 11:50:00
CanadaVisa Approved

One edit to the hotel review...had to pay $20 a day for parking. One edit to the consulate review...had to give updated letters of intent to the interviewer in room 7.

That is important information about parking. My fiance' needs to have all the cash necessary for the $131 visa fee and $20 for parking. I am printing updated letters in prep for his interview on Monday, May 3. yeah! I figure ours will go as smoothly since we have all the paperwork necessary.

CanadaAmount to pay at the embassy (k1 visa)
You can also pay in canadian dollars and they give you whatever the current exchange rate is on the day to convert from US $131 to Canadian dollars. Yesterday it would have been $137.55 in Canadian. We brought in U.S. dollars anyway though in exact change for U.S. $131.

I will let my fiance' know. My fiance's company is small and everyone knows everyone. We invited them all to the wedding even though most have responded that they can't make it.

Canadareturn address on xpresspost

Your very welcome! That is one question I "do" know the answer to. LOL See your from Battle Creek...Im not too far from you...we live about 20 min West of Jackson. We can be VJ neighbors! Good luck with everything!!!!

Awesome, maybe we can meet up sometime. I am thankful that the business address works because I don't want these important documents to be lost in the Canada Post network of delivery stations.
lilacvioletirisFemaleCanada2010-05-04 10:08:00
Canadareturn address on xpresspost

My husband had his interview this past Tuesday and specifically asked the lady if he could write his work address on the Expresspost envelope. She said that was no problem. He wanted to have it delivered there because he spends more time there than at home and wanted to make sure he got it! So you should have no problems.

Excellent. I really don't want the package getting lost in any way. Going to where my fiance' works seems like the best idea! Thanks.
lilacvioletirisFemaleCanada2010-04-29 18:37:00
Canadareturn address on xpresspost
Can my fiance' use his work address for the xpresspost envelope? Or does he have to use his home address? He wouldn't be home to "sign" for it and it seems going to find the location that the xpresspost envelope was left at to retrieve can cause no end of headache.
lilacvioletirisFemaleCanada2010-04-29 15:05:00
CanadaInterview and insurance?
I think it is more for the Canadian resident who has been used to having socialized health care to recognize that his/her health insurance will not be usable in the U.S. As the woman said at my fiance's interview, "Based on the information you have provided today, you are approved."

Proof of health insurance isn't a requirement in the paperwork so I doubt it would mean a denial of K-1 visa.
lilacvioletirisFemaleCanada2010-05-05 13:11:00
CanadaMontreal - Time to receive Visa after interview
Welcome! My fiance' had his interview in Montreal on May 3. They said the xpresspost envelope would be mailed back within 2 weeks but the mailroom sends the mail when it feels like it so could be shorter, could be longer. Be sure to write down the tracking number on the 12 by 15 prepaid regional xpresspost mailer from Canada post (since you live in Quebec).

You may want to check out my review and look at the K-1 May interviews Montreal link as well.
