QUOTE (maliciant @ Oct 18 2008, 04:53 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Married or engaged, in terms of your relationship I see little real difference if you are serious. I think having choices tends to make people happier, if you went the marriage route, you'd have the choice to work immediately *OR* focus on adjusting, as a fiancee you haven't got a choice, if adjusting takes you all of 10 days and then you are bored out of your mind... well, you can volunteer or something but you don't have a lot of choice as far as actually working. That and it's cheaper. I'm back to hoping august noa2's start popping off like crazy then... watching igor's list has been dissappointing this week, not nearly enough action!

Based on some of the approvals that have happened recently, it looks like about 4 months for csc filers to be finished... I knew going in it would likely be a 9 month process, being down to 4 months doesn't sound so bad (coming to a 6 month total which is decent turn around time all things considered). Of course, I'm paying more attention to CSC filers in the philippines, canadians and people who speak james bond english likely will be a little faster.

It's a psychological thing, I guess. It's different to me, as much as the seriousness is there.

I would prefer to move over at the end of my studies as his fiancee, the same as I was when I "left".. get married and set up a life together - than get married in the middle of this mess and have to wait to be together anyway. (And based on a few posts I have seen on here from people who went the K3 route, being married does sometimes make a difference in terms of how it feels)

We wouldn't want to risk being stuck in the spousal process which can take up to a year and facing problems because of it. As of next July, my apartment contract runs out. With the K1, I can have it in my hand in advance and not have to panic about it, focus on my studies, and still be within the 6 months.

Plus I wouldn't really have a choice whether or not I wanted to go into work ASAP because I can't drive. It's one of the first things I need to learn when I move over, because there is no way I can go anywhere alone until I get that out of the way. Our area of MA is somewhere you NEED to drive to get by. By the time the EAD comes in, which is only about 3 months, I would have hopefully learned and be able to choose then. smile.gif

Gemmie: I guess this would have probably been way better to say about two months ago, but considering how much extra time you are going to add onto your wait to finish college, maybe you should have gotten married first, and filed that way, the extra time those tend to take wouldn't make much difference in your case, you'd have a better overall visa/status when you make the move, as I understand it a lot more flexibility in when you make the move (I think two years from the visa being granted and it's multiple entry etc), that plus the AOS is not needed or less expensive. Is this just something you didn't think of at the time or considered but chose not to do?

I'm hoping for a fast early approval for all august filers... except gemmie... who needs a good 3 or 4 month delay in her processing... I mean if someone has to get stuck with some FBI 3 month long name check delay, might as well be the person who benefits tongue.gif...

Of course we realised, we had a year of engagment before we could apply so had lots of time to research options. tongue.gif

The reason we applied now rather than during 2009 was because we wanted to make sure we had the visa well in advance of finishing school. It has a 6 month expiration date and seeing as I'll be getting my visa any time from February-May (depending on delays and Consulate stages), I'll be able to hold onto it and use it within the time-frame. Even if the interview is in February, it's still valid.

So no 3 month delays, please.. we wouldn't benefit from that at all, it would just send us into even more stress.

The spousal visa... there is no way I would want to be seperated from my husband.. being seperated is hard enough when you're in a relationship or engaged. I would much rather make my move to the US and then set up a life *together*. Besides, I don't mind having to wait until I can work and whatnot, I want to take some time for adjusting. Learning to drive, getting used to the money, volenteering, learning to cook properly...

I do seem a bit unsure about the new job, Bill has been looking for something stable for a few years now since he only made $8p/h at his old one and he worked there for 6 years. He luckily found a job in web design / IT tech which is what he loves to do, but it's still not enough hours, so now he's looking for anything. The interview was for Comcast (cable company) so although we're happy he finally got a call back, it's not a fantastic job and if it means we won't get to see each other for 7 months because of it, I'm selfishly not looking forward to it.

I know that what you say is true though Donna, 7 months is worth it to be together all the time. I'm just not used to it and am pretty convinced I will crash. Not a good time for me, as it'll be my final semester at university. Hopefully we can work something out where I get to see him for a little bit. I have thought about transferring studies over there but it's really not worth it, as I'd still have to pay my UK bills and hand assignments in person.

Thanks for the kind words girls, I really appreciate it. I didn't want you all thinking I was a whiny bi*ch for having to wait longer, even though I know I am. tongue.gif

Great news about Christmas, Mara!
You get a little refill before you do the final steps at the Consulate. smile.gif Then you'll be with him very quickly. I'm not sure about the shot situation. But if you look at the Sydney? Consulate website, they should have a list of what is needed. If not, perhaps the USCIS website. I know that one of them will have it.

Hey guys and girls!

I've booked my flight.. I'm leaving in 8 weeks... going from London to Boston on December 11th and returning on January 6th. So there's no going back now. I just have to gather evidence and go for it! I've been having dreams almost every night about either missing my plane or being denied entry. I'm just going to be really confident and blunt with the officer when answering questions so that he knows I have nothing to hide.. I can always point out that in my passport there are stamps for Christmas every year and I always go back to the UK on time.

I've been MIA for a couple of days as I've had stuff going on in my head. Bill might be getting a good job (good news!) but it means there's a chance I won't get to see him until next July (bad news!) because it's hard to get time off for him and I'll have the K1 in my passport so won't be able to use it.. sad.gif I'm really happy for everyone in here who will be making their way to the US as soon as they have their visa, but reading about hopefully getting the NOA2 soon would have made me feel worse, seeing as I won't be going anywhere for a while. But I'm feeling a bit better today.

It's Friday Mara, let's hope Chris has the NOA1 waiting for him! By the time you get hold of it, you'll only be days/weeks away from NOA2. tongue.gif

Colin - I'm going to my GP in November and asking him to give me any of the shots that I don't have on the list. Hopefully he won't charge me as it is the NHS after all.. I wasn't aware we needed HEP shots though?

Welcome Thayani... you're always welcome to share your crappy feelings here while waiting for the visa.. there are some awesome people here.

Donna - Pics?

Hmm I have a year contract with BT at the moment so would have to cancel that...

Do you mean pay an extra £5 to keep my line rental, plus the 15 to Sky?

Actually, what am I saying?? I don't need international calls from my house as Bill gets the free landline calls.

I thought it was mobile. tongue.gif

Donna, what phone company are you with? I could go for that deal!

I'm like Fred, very lucky to not gain weight no matter how much I eat. Well I say "lucky", I actually want to put on weight. I find it frustrating when people tell me that I need to, when it's hard for me.. if it's rude to tell people they need to lose weight, it's rude to tell people they need to gain it. mad.gif

Personally I think if you throw the evidence at them and run they may just be too confused and scared to chase you down at homeland security Gemmie! In fact if you have a nice shiny engagement ring use that to blind them first!

Ah i have this beni hill music playing in my head now with the Customs officers chasing you around the airport baggage claim, lol.

Gemmie just say visiting boyfriend and family for Christmas i always took my ring off, most important is itinery with return flight

Wow you've visited 14 times, you are very lucky to have used the VWP often. I know you're having problems with your ex-husband and it must be hard, it's a lot more difficult when children are involved.

I'm considering saying boyfriend, it's just that I've used fiance for the past year. Plus they'll ask if we're getting married and won't they think it's a bit strange if I say yes? I just don't want it to look like "yes we're engaged and LOOK AT ALL MY EVIDENCE HAHAHA!" and pull out piles of documents. laughing.gif That WILL look suspicious.

Colin, the UK is extremely small to Americans because you can pretty much fit most of it inside of Florida! And FL isn't a big state in relation to the others.

I do think it's funny that everyone assumes you must be from London though. I went to the doctor's when I was last in the US and he asked where I'm from. I said England, and he said which part? I told him "South West" because I know that it's very rare that they know Swindon or Bath. He says "South West London?" laughing.gif

Maliciant, I won't be in the US for Valentines but I'm not really bothered about that... it's way too commercialised for me. I would rather do something special because I felt like doing something special, not because everyone is doing it on the one day. The downside is all the loved up couples though (again Mara! grrrr).

Mara, thanks for the link. We speak on the phone everyday so don't use Skype anymore but I know it's very useful to have, especially for those that don't get to speak with their loved ones that often or use the phone.

Mara, I think it's so funny that neither of you remembered! laughing.gif Bill and I met in person in 2005 (December 15th) after nearly 3 years of online communication, and have been lucky enough to be together on that day every year since. Let's hope we can do it one last time!

We're still planning on doing a legal thing next September... so long away, almost another year. The cute courthouse idea sounds really special, how sweet that his dad thought of that! I take it you get on really well with the family then?

Really random story, but I just remembered being at Bill's uncle's house this year for July 4th, his uncle spoke to me for a while about random things... and while we were eating dinner, I spoke and he looked up and said "I forgot you had an accent..." unsure.gif After a conversation!!

Fred, I'm glad you got to speak with Emilia. smile.gif It must be hard only getting to speak once a week but the journey will soon be over for you.

This weekend? Last night my friends and I went to a school-themed disco! We all dressed up and a few of the girls got pretty drunk, it was nice to get out a bit as I haven't been out since June due to my time in the US. As I said earlier though, made me miss Bill a lot. Today my housemate cooked Chicken Korma for us (I live with 2 girls) and we watched The Corpse Bride. biggrin.gif What about everyone else?

Colin, don't panic.

If I remember correctly, you haven't visited her too often and it's been a good few months too. The worry is for the retards like myself who attempt POE every other month. smile.gif You should be fine with her granny's letter of invitation, does it state how long she plans for you to stay? What about the other letters? Cause remember they're only looking for something that says you will be leaving when you say you will, you'll have a return ticket and the letters. If you're really worried, you could get something from your family too. Bring anything ongoing that you pay too.

On the form, I would suggest putting the address you will be at for the most time. I really doubt the officers will ask you if you're staying anywhere else unless you tell them your plans. You should be fine by saying you're going to visit your fiancee/'s family for the holidays and then returning home on January 12th. You could say she's your girlfriend but be prepared that they sometimes ask if you're getting married, and you don't want to lie to the officers. That's why I always say fiance. I'd feel as though I were lying if I said boyfriend, especially because I might have the NOA1 with me from the fiance visa! I would be toast if they found out I lied.

But of course it's your decision, it's down to your past experiences through POE and what you feel comfortable with saying.

HD - My best friend is a make-up artist, you've just made me realise I could ask her to do my make-up! She mostly does theatrical make-up though. I'm sure you could fine a cheap one in the area... or just spend some time practising on yourself! I'm glad you're feeling better. Remember that we're here for you whenever you want to express your feelings.

Yeah.. I know exactly what you mean. The worst time I've ever experienced this was when I had just said goodbye to him for another 4-5 months or something. And when I was sitting on the plane waiting for it to take off, I had a young COUPLE sitting next to me, giving each other little kisses and sleeping on each other's shoulders. I had to try very hard to avoid looking as it made me so upset!

I doubt the immigration border would ask things about boyfriends/girlfriends or marriage unless the person tells them, and I agree with you that seeing as it's the first time, it should be OK. Wouldn't it be great if we knew what exactly was in their system and if they could make "notes" on our file?

Oh I'm not brave at all. sad.gif I'm just taking a huge risk with everything I have (I don't really have the money to spend on a flight again) in the hope of visiting the US one last time before next July. I'm so afraid of being denied entry but we're hoping it will be OK with lots of evidence and honesty.

By the way, happy first anniversary of meeting Chris!! dancin5hr.gif

Still can't do the sweet and salty deal tongue.gif Just not yet, maybe given time.

Betogethersoon - there is no need for you to the K1 petition with you, they will have that on their system and its just more paper to carry. If they ask you about it the line "We have begun our petition and there is no way i want to wreak it by staying over my limit" may help you out in a pinch (has for other VJ'ers that I have read make the scarey journey across the american boarder) but they aren't going to use your petition as evidence you wont leave. As someone else meantioned before just try and skirt the subject, don't lie, but don't tell them if they don't ask.

Another tip, unless they specifically ask you who your visiting, stick with your in america for a holiday , it's not lieing - just avoiding the questions they ask when the words boyfriend/girlfriend or fiance come out of your mouth. I still remember having to play 4000 questions at the boarder in chicago once because the guy didn't like "i'm visiting my boyfriend".

Vegemite is a yeast like substance you spread on bread or toast like jam (jelly to those americans amoung us), its an aussie thing. The UK have stolen it and created cheap immatations such as marmite and promite, but its just not the same tongue.gif check out www.vegemite.com.au if you want a better answer.

Looks like Gemmie has abandoned us for the weekend, clever girl! If only I didn't just have weekends to talk to Chris I might have been able to do the same thing (though it is raining to thats a good deterant too.

Yeah I went out for the night with some friends... it was fun, except I found myself getting a bit sad because I just wanted Bill with us. Especially when one girl's boyfriend showed up to take care of her (she got very drunk)... I just wanted a cuddle from mine. sad.gif Still good fun though.

Hmm I don't think the K1 is actually in their system, they scan your passport which shows visits info. I'm so scared that I'll be denied entry in December, this will be my 8th trip over (last trip September, too) and what with the problems last time... I'm bringing lots of evidence but I'm not sure when to show it as he might think it looks suspicious that someone would bring so much if they have nothing to hide. I also don't know whether to mention the K1 when he asks when we're getting married. (I always tell them straight that I'm visiting my fiance when they ask for the purpose of my visit). I really think it's a bad idea to say that you're there for vacation because even though you're going abroad, you know that the purpose of your trip is technically to see your loved one. Plus they ask who you're staying with, and I just don't feel comfortable lying about that one, especially seeing as I've now said fiance a lot.

Shaking fist at Columbus day!

To be honest I don't think you have anything to worry about if it's your first trip to the states... it's not like me and my 8th. unsure.gif

I would take something just in case though, like letters from parents or utility bills or anything that you pay... and a return ticket. (I was asked for mine, even though it doesn't really count as "evidence")

Only mention the K1 if they ask, and they won't. They might ask you when you're getting married though.

I do wish my timeline would stop moving backwards though. mad.gif

So your number isn't something like EAC-08-225-XXXXX? august filers should have something between about 200-235 according to what I had read (I'm being lazy and just basing the range off my own number there). The final 5 digits could really be a random number for all I know... let us know if you fall in the 200-235 range (or well, really close to it... if not then I guess what I read was wrong or I remembered it wrong).

Oops, turns out I might have misunderstood.

I have EAC-08-223-XXXXX but we filed on the 12th (NOA1 14th) so I don't know how that relates to the number.

unsure.gif

HD, that does sound awfully frustrating! Personally I would call USCIS again to let them know as I wouldn't want to take any chances, even if it's just an initial. It's not like you're having to re-file.

There is a post somewhere explaining it... but it's something like the first three letters WAC or EAC (you know this part already), then 08 for 2008, the number of days from the first of the year that your petition was recieved, so jan 1 is 001, jan 2 is 002... the next month would be 031 assuming 30 days in jan, then there are 5 more numbers, having something to do with the number of petitions recieved on that day. This is second hand from memory (and looking at my own noa1)

Hmm mine doesn't seem to follow that formula.. I have the EAC and the 08 for the year but everything else is just random numbers.

I'm an Aries (April) and Bill is a Virgo (September)... but I am NOTHING like an Aries. More an earth sign, if I were to put much belief into that stuff. As it is, I'm a psychology major so I kinda apply all kinds of theories to it instead.

Mara, I hope you feel better about work. It sounds like a stressful job! it always is the one thing that sets you off.. all it takes is a short conversation with a family member, a crappy day at uni, financial problems, and it always comes back to the visa.

I've been having bad times myself lately. Not only am I still "recovering" from being with Bill last week, but I've had problems getting my student loan to come in. I went in today to discuss it and they said that had forgotten to notify the company that I was back!! So have to wait another week to be paid, which means no money for food, travel, books etc. And then they had the nerve to charge me £25/$50 for being late to register in the first place! I refuse to pay that after the stress they've put me through. I can't even buy my food or study (without books), for goodness sake.

How are you having an Aussie feel to your dress, Mara? I would love a silk dress, something simple and elegant. If there was a way to customise it to the British way, that would be interesting.

I haven't bought anything yet seeing as we haven't decided whether or not to hold off the actual wedding to when I'm more settled into the US. But the MIL has offered to take me to Dave's Bridal to pick a few dresses to try on. They're cheap (from $99) and are amazing. I haven't told her about the plans to hold off the ceremony yet though.

I wonder if mine keeps pushing itself out so far because I have yet been able to put in a NOA1 date?

It might be, I think mine moved once I was able to put in the NOA1... but it's also moved back quite a lot. It's gone from December 6th to December 25th, so who knows.

Mine seems to have stayed around the same. Christmas Day at the earliest. smile.gif

Wedding plans? To be perfectly honest, and hopefully I won't be judged for saying this...

I hold a lot of resentment against USCIS because they basically put us in the situation of having to get married or not be together at all (there was no way either of us could get a tourist or work visa)... we're toying with the idea of having a legal ceremony or signing papers within the 90 days to abide by the law, and then having the official ceremony (nice location, family, friends, honeymoon etc) when *I* feel that I want to be married by 100% choice. (Bill has always wanted to get married even before the immigration stuff lol)

Of course I love Bill with all my heart and I want to be with him, and that's why we're doing this. We've learned about each other over the past 5/6 years as friends, boyfriend/girlfriend and an engaged couple. If I have to sign legal papers to have US, then it's what I'll do...

What I'll count as my real wedding... I want something small and intimate, with close loved ones, and lots of flowers and candles. smile.gif I want our "real" wedding to be natural and non-red-taped. Does that make sense? Not rushed into the 90 day limit to satisfy the government, and only when I'm 100% sure that it's because of me and not immigration.

I'd even go so far as to say that most people probably do not know the difference between a visa and a passport.

Yeah, I've noticed this too.. I've been asked if I'll be a US citizen once I get my visa. laughing.gif Or why I could possibly have any problems trying to get into the US as often as I like.

As for the support, I can understand it must be hard for friends and family members to accept that a loved one is moving abroad. It actually makes me feel guilty at times and the thing is, I don't *want* to leave *anyone*... it seems I've been put into this situation (as we all have), of having to either leave the fiance/e or leave the family/friends. It's hard to understand why someone you love would leave the country and everyone behind physically. And that's why I often feel bad when I hear how upset others are.

I remind my dad when he talks about how much it sucks that he might only get to see me a couple times a year that this is the reality of what me and Bill face being apart from each other. We just want it to end, years of being apart is incredibly tiring, as we all know. I don't expect everything to go perfect once we're re-united, I'm not that naive. There are going to be so many issues to handle both as a couple and as individuals, adjusting. But I feel it's time that Bill and I have a proper chance to allow our relationship to grow without the restrictions of living across an ocean.

Maliciant, wow @ your time difference!! That must be really difficult.

Mara, I've always wanted to visit Australia... my friend is from Essex (Greater London) and she always hears about how her accent is Australian! I hate to admit it, but I can see that too. biggrin.gif

Same reaction with the family then!

I tried telling my dad the basics and he's continued to ask me IF I'm moving to the US every time the subject comes up.

Even though we've been engaged for over a year and he's known about our plans, he said again this weekend "well you don't know what you're going to be doing after graduation, do you?" I mentioned the US move (for literally the 20th time or more) and he didn't say anything. He either forgets, or hopes that I've changed my mind and I'm not moving afterall. He's not taking the thing too well... he's said in the past that it will feel like I'm dead (??!) which doesn't make leaving any easier, huh? tongue.gif

You mentioning the NOA2, does anyone else have problems explaining the process to others?

It's sooo much more complicated than people realise so I usually try to cut it at "We get the first reply, wait about 4-5 months to get the next reply and then that takes a couple months to get the actual visa." laughing.gif

Thanks. Having to wait an extra 6 or 7 months is a horrible thought but I can't just quit school while in my final year. I've come too far. Even the thought of having to say goodbye at the airport two more times... ugh.

I bet you guys are so excited about seeing your loves!! Not long after that, you'll all be back together again!

Coping up and down... one minute I'm focused on what is here and the next I'm focused on wanting to be back with him. I know that it will get better as time goes on though. 9 weeks until I attempt POE!!

No need to be worried! smile.gif

Some people never get touches, some people get several. It doesn't make a difference to the amount of time.

I was touched on August 19th but that was also the same day the check was cashed so it probably was nothing other than a"putting file in box now" touch.

Welcome to the waiting room, Harsh!

Nice video. smile.gif Don't worry, the NOA2 won't take too long. We should all be hearing around the Christmas season.

Here's me and Billy in Plymouth in... June? Might be July. laughing.gif

edit - Oh it has a date! Doh!

It's normal to feel ups and downs.

I'm currently in the withdrawal process from seeing my fiance and one minute I'm feeling like I'm moving on a little and the next minute I find myself miserable because I want to be back with him. It is getting better every day though and I'm ready to keep waiting for the NOA2. Mainly though I'm waiting for next summer as I'm not able to move until then. The NOA2 coming faster won't change that.

Come on guys, just 2 months left, we can handle that. smile.gif Then it will go really quickly as everyone will have their interviews and packets to prepare.

If you're feeling sad about not being with them, how about going out and finding a little something to send them? That always makes me feel good, and as it takes a week to get there, it distracts me from the waiting game.

I'm going to Massachusetts, by the way (North East). Would be cool to meet somewhere in the middle of us all.

I don't think you were snappy, don't worry. I hear the wisdom teeth can be pretty painful, here's hoping you get better soon. Have lots of ice cream!

Ahh Skype is a great thing. Only reason we prefer the phone is because we're lazy and like to talk whilst laying in bed or whatever. Having said that, Bill is fine with using the ol' IM, but I can't survive without vocal conversation everyday.

Oh wow, do you have a website for it or something? Sounds like something to look into..

I'm very lucky that I have a landline in my room that my fiance can call unlimited for $40 per month. We're definetely going to get Vonage when I move though to talk to family and friends!

I'm honestly not trying to put out anyones fireworks here or take away any hope, but it's very unlikely we'll be getting any NOA2s in November, and especially October. They still have to process most of June and all of July, which puts us in the December/January slot. I understand that we all need lots of hope and optimism with this process but we also need a dose of realism or we'll have many disappointments to come. Still, by the time winter ends, we should all have our approvals and be moving on with the following steps. smile.gif

My timeline seems to have moved a lot recently. It began with December 6th and is now showing December 25th...
