hi to all canadian just wanna ask what is a good place in canada to visit or a tourist sites? just planning to go there maybe this summer but dont know which place to go...........like place to eat, place to stay etc....thanks
Calgary (I was raised there).
  • 1988 Winter Olympics held there (you can experience actual events of some Olympic facilities in winter, speed-skate rink all year, for fee)
  • Rockies visible from many parts of city on clear day
  • easy driving distance of several National and Provincial Parks (Banff, Jasper, Waterton Lakes, Little Bow, ...) and one Provincial Park (Fish Creek) within city limits
  • You can walk around downtown using (mostly) Plus-15 passageways
  • Heritage Park, where you can experience simulation of early 20th century
(notes: Waterton Lakes is better suited for full-weekend trip from Calgary--as that gives time to enjoy boat-ride, which briefly crosses into MT; Jasper has bus-tour on Athabasca Glacier aka Columbian Icefields)

Places to stay, lots of options including:
  • hotel AT airport (lobby at departures level)
  • several hotels downtown
  • Motel Village, in nook of Trans-Canada and AB-1A highways

Eating places--again lots of options (see Calgary Yellow Pages, or you can do "drive along MacLeod Trail" approach which also will work), popular is McKay's Ice Cream in nearby Cochrane.

Apparently this normal in Quebec, but I think it's gross. Slice of cheese on top of apple pie
If one changes the pie filling, it's also known outside Quebec.

In Alberta for example, Saskatoon pie with cheddar or colby is excellent (yes, I have tried it).

In Levant (and also in Sub-continent) this is commonplace (ok, I stretched the idea of "bread" to include pitas, ...; and also the "yoghurt" to include dishes in which it is a major ingredient such as raita, kadhi, korma...)

Cat's sandwich thread got me thinking about this.

So is there any odd food combinations that you enjoy? Anything that makes another person do a double take but you insist that it's awesome??

I have a few and they are...

Canned tuna, rice and lemon pepper:
its awesome and my favorite thing to eat but it grosses my husband out every time I eat it.

Pretzels and cream cheese:
Also very yummy but most people give me weird stares when I eat it.

Toast dipped in tomato juice:
If I order toast in a restaurant I usually dip it in tomato juice. It's really good.
Well, I've made ketchup-toast sandwiches at home, so I'll take this as variation.

bacon and peanut butter:
I don't eat bacon very often but when I do I like to put peanut butter on it. But I have heard this is quite common.

Maybe we'll find others who enjoy the same thing we do and learn that we're not so uncommon after all. tongue.gif

CanadaTravelling with 2 passports but wants to return back to Canada
QUOTE (xjennyinstereox @ Jun 8 2009, 09:48 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hello all,

I was wondering if you could help out with a question that I have. My sister has dual citizenship. She has Canadian citizenship (born and raised in Quebec) and also has EU Citizenship (Portuguese). She has been living abroad in Ireland for quite some time and will be returning to Canada in late summer.

She does not know which passport to use when returning, as she has been outside Canada for longer than 6 months, but would like to return back to Canada to make it her permanent home once again. She is thinking she will use her Canadian passport to leave Ireland so she can return to Canada using her Canadian passport. I know it's not smart to travel with two passports, but she did for whatever reason.

Will she encounter issues when she returns to Canada if she uses her Canadian passport? Will she be penalized for being out of the country for longer than 6 months? Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.
Not true.

For those with dual-citizenship, the other passport actually makes it much easier to enter the non-Canada country.

(in the case the other country is the US, a US passport is mandatory)

Agree with Kathryn and Marilyn, sell stuff off ("two bird" solution, reduces amount to move and gives some cash useful for trip).

Even the car, it may be better to sell it, take cash and buy replacement after moving to DC-area (lots of ads in "Express" and "Examiner"--both free--as well as WaPo).

Along with all the other things said about naturalizing..... if your US citizen spouse dies and you move back to your home country, you cannot collect the survivor's pension if you have not naturalised.
You know I can top that one.

How about them dictating a "choice" to you on a life-issue due to their own incompetence and lack of training?

(specifically, TN-1 trying to bring into US a spouse from a non-NAFTA country; in theory possible, but Sod's Law dictates that the petition will be handled by an official who isn't NAFTA-cognisant and doesn't even want to be).

I took that as to mean, if I naturalized I would have to renounce my Canadian citizenship.

I take it this isn't the case? unsure.gif
Nope. The US oath states of "renouncing all other alliances" but they actually have no way (nor the intellect generally, even if they had a way) to check that you actually take all steps to renounce.

Renunciation of Canadian citizenship must be done explicitly by filing a CIT-0830 with CIC and paying a fee of C$100.

There are also some travel advantages. A dual can travel to Cuba (against which US has had embargo since JFK's time) or Iran (Canada neither initiated nor received diplomatic-relations severance from there, unlike US) by using roundabout route and both passports.

I'm not Canadian (my fiancee is), but I've found things like Sour Patch Kids, Smarties, and some other items that have been listed here as Canada-only in the United States.

This kind of Smarties?

Posted Image

or the Halloween type Smarties that back home we call Rockets? I've got tonnes of those, but I've never seen a package of chocolate Nestle Smarties here in the US.

And we don't have a Walgreens, because we don't live anywhere near perfect :P

Sometimes stores near the border will have some Canadian items, but I'm nowhere near the border. So, no Smarties for me til I get home.

How close are you to Charlotte, Reba?

That city has at least some Indians--so one can get true (Brit, not Canuck) Smarties at any desi grocer.

Some answers:
  • You have heard of removing the I-94 (and/or visa) before sending in the passport? This is already commonplace with those on temp work visas (or F-1's).
  • As for the I-551--once you have the plastic (semi-perm, conditional) GC in hand, this is done with; some cases, no stamp is given (as in Pras' case)

True on CR-1 (immigrant spousal visa) as well as plain-jane GC--processed ONLY at Montreal.

And I also remember a VJ member with a Limey K-1 fiance, who wanted to go to Montreal for a honeymoon immediately after the marriage.

I posted that she could do so BEFORE (absurd as it may sound--as the Limey would be able to enter Canada at Montreal, spend a few days there, then go through the PFI) but not AFTER until the Limey received AP.

CanadaTravel Restrictions after married

So let me make sure I get this right:

Once I enter the US and get married I submit my EAD, AOS.

EAD - will take approx. 3 months to get and is valid for 3 months

You're confusing the JFK-issue EAD (hardly applicable to Canucks--rather inconvenient and expensive to arrange flights to ensure customs/immigration clearance at JFK) with the plain-jane EAD. The latter (which is the one which takes about 3 months to get) actually has validity for ONE YEAR (from issue date).

AOS- will take approx 6-18 months to get and I can only travel to Canada with an AP, which takes approx. 4-5 months to get. Once I get the AOS, I am then a Conditional Permenant Res., until I have to ask for the restrictions to be remove after the two years are up?

Also, validity of AP is one year (from issue date).

Generally, AP and EAD tend to arrive simultaneously

Actually going through Immigration at JFK from Canada is now impossible as the last Canadian airport that has flights to there (Halifax) now has a PFI station...

Not quite true, as it IS possible to book a flight from a Canuck airport to Heathrow (or any other major European hub) and then return to JFK--though I covered that case with my comment of "extremely expensive and inconvenient".

I heard that you can get a EAD stamp that is valid for 3 months at the Detroit/Windsor Bridge crossing. Would I still be able to apply for an EAD that is valid for 1 year, even if I have a EAD stamp that will run out after 3 months?

Yes. The two are disjoint--as the one-year EAD is part of AOS package, while the other is not.

CanadaHeard an interesting story at my medical today

You can go to the boarder and pick up a R-1 (Religous Worker) Visa with a diploma and a letter of employement.. Maybe the guy has some type of letter dyslexia :) Who knows... the guy could just be a disturber too :)

AFAIK, the types that can be picked up at POE/PFI:
  • TN-1
  • R-1
  • L-1A/B
  • any DERIVATIVE (spouse of temp worker) visas (even if the "primary" temp worker visa cannot be picked up this way) so long as the beneficiary is Canuck
It's a lot like the popular myth amongst desis that a Canadian passport makes it easier to get a GC (no, as the issuance of GC's is tied to the BIRTH country of the applicant; I have enough proof of that having gone through a nearly 2-year "hurry-up-and-wait" delay in my own GC process which finished in Dec. 1999).
Saddle BroncMale02007-02-22 11:11:00
CanadaHeard an interesting story at my medical today
Also, there are very few visas where the beneficiary can "just go to the border and pick it up"--and they certainly DON't include the K-1.

While it IS possible for a TN-1 (one of the abovementioned few types) married to a USC to "upgrade" to a CR-1 (through filing an I-130 and asking for processing at Montreal), this has plenty of risks (such as if the beneficiary takes a holiday outside US, he/she risks being denied entry UNTIL THE CR-1 APPOINTMENT IS COMPLETED).

CanadaUS driver license

Best to check too how long you have to drive on your "out of state" DL.. Here in CT it's only 30 days.. Not much time to get everything changed over & legal like..

"You have 30 days after moving to Connecticut to legally drive on your previous license. After 30 days of residency, your out-of-state license is no longer acceptable to legally drive in Connecticut."

Most states (exception being CA, which uses 10 days) use 30 days after getting residency.

However, those on TEMPORARY work-permits (such as H1-b or TN-1) are allowed to keep an out-of-country licence (which was how I got away with not swapping from AB to GA initially); but licence from another US state doesn't fall into this "loophole".

Also, in practice, it's quite difficult to find out exactly how long one has lived in a state (especially if the licence is from an immediately bordering state).
