CanadaRenting a truck in the US + Not activating K1 visa
QUOTE (~Laura and Nick~ @ Jun 11 2008, 02:25 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Wow, the budget website SUCKS! mad.gif
I can't even look at the rates to drive from my area to NJ at all...it shows the drop off locations in NJ but it won't allow me to select them.
So stupid!!!
So does the company, especially for a loooooonnnnnng drive as the OP is considering.

I remember renting a 15' Budget (Penske) truck to move from Dallas to Atlanta. Extremely uncomfortable, the drive took 3 calendar days--and I had to spend more in hotel costs as well as the truck's bucket seats were non-reclining (and I also couldn't lie ACROSS the cab).

In contrast, a U-haul I rented to move from Atlanta to DC was somewhat of an improvement--due to U-haul's bench-seat configuration, I could lie across the cab and drive longer stretches, so the drive took only 2 calendar days (the distance is similar to that from Dallas to Atlanta).

Bus from Montreal to Vermont : 20$ (about 2 hours)
Gas to come back with truck from Vermont to Montreal : 30$ max.
I would save about 500$....(1300$ if renting in Canada vs. 800$ if renting in the US)

As far as the k1 visa goes I had the interview 2 days ago so I should receive it in a few days hopefully.

QUOTE (Yomtl @ Jun 11 2008, 01:15 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I've been comparing the prices of one-way truck rentals from Canada to USA and also from USA to USA (only option from Canada to USA is U-Haul).
It really seems that U-Haul is taking advantage of this monopoly situation on one-way rentals Canada/USA (they're charging around 1300$ before taxes and insurance fees for a one-way rental between Montreal and Orlando.... ; whereas renting in the US would only cost around 800$....).
So I'm starting to look at the option of crossing the border to go and rent my truck in Burlington (Vermont), then drive back to Montreal with the truck, load it and then drive all the way down to Florida.
Has anyone done something similar in the past?
In theory, sounds like a good idea.

QUOTE
The other tricky part here is that i do not want to activate my K1 when crossing the border to go rent my truck.
I am still kind of worried about this K1 visa activation question (I have read the whole topic talking specifically about this issue)....Do you guys think that I could have a problem crossing the border if I just bring my Canadian Citizenship card with me when I take a Greyhound bus through customs to go and pick up the rental truck in Vermont? (by bringing only my citizenship card I wouldn't have to present my passport with the K1 in it)
Thank you!
It looks to me that you have not received the K-1 yet. Have you considered doing this prior to the K-1 interview, and taking the K-1 interview appointment letter with you as evidence of intent to return?

Another way to renew passport is to wait till you make a visit back to Canada (assumption: that you do so prior to expiry) and then do the renewal there.

I was asking the question because my motorcycle's speedometer is a digital one and only displays km/h.... :-(
You can always use the "pace traffic" approach.
Is that where you run alongside traffic to see if you can keep up? It's too hot in Florida for that methinks tongue_ss.gif
no0pb.gif it's where you (without looking at speedo) just drive at "average" speed of traffic.

Of course, it has the drawback that in some cities (such as NYC), the average speed is close to 0. laughing.gif

Even on Grasmick Forum, there were oft references to colleagues who had chosen to do AOS (for employment-based GC) and had wound up spending "quality time" with INS/USCIS when returning to US on AP.

For the Canuck border guard, your Canuck passport (or citizenship card if you have one) will do nicely; the AP needs to be shown to the US border guard.

I've read through the posts here and was thinking about the pickles and agree with CBR Klaussen Pickles (in your cooler) are really tasty! I find ketchup here in the US too sweet, I prefer the vinegar taste of Canada's, so bring back ketchup. Cheeze Whiz, Nabob coffee (Full City), All Dressed chips are things I brought back the last time I was there. I just learned there was an A&W here in St. Louis, but I haven't been there. A&W's poutine in Saskatchewan was probably the best of the fast food poutine's I've had. Doubt if they would serve it here though. I was always a huge fan of Harvey's burgers. If I was to pick a fast food burger joint here in the US I'd have to say Hardee's was one of my favourites...not that I've been to many, but thus far anyway!
Eh, Yanks rarely even know what poutine is--so you can't expect to see it on the menu.

Never go through YVR if you're looking to visit your Canadian boyfriend/girlfriend, fiance(e) or spouse. They go absolutely crazy there. I've heard YYZ is just as bad or even sometimes worse. I suppose that makes sense, though. Both Vancouver and Toronto probably receive the most people and therefore, the highest number of foreign visitors.

She asked if I had any pets to which I replied yes and that I had his passport too. She then asked about household plants which I did not bring and then directed me to go inside.

The next guard I spoke with asked me if I had time cause this was not just a 5 minute process. I replied I had lots of time. He had an elderly guard assist him with the process. The elderly guard had a checklist that clearly indicated that the I-94 was to be stamped "Employment Unauthorized". I questioned this but he just kept replying that it was on his checklist. mad.gif . I'm wondering how old that checklist is.

We still are not 100% if we will continue to live in the U.S. or will move to Canada to be by my family. I still own my house in Canada so I was thinking this would be proof enough for them that I was "temporary", no intent for immigration.
Problem is that in eyes of USCIS, marriage to a USC by a non-GC, non-USC oft constitutes "intent to immigrate"; you'll have much difficulty convincing officials otherwise.

That aside: a TN-1 who marries a USC should still file almost immediately I-130 and full-package (including EAD and AP) AOS.

CanadaTwo issues in Canada that I don't understand
QUOTE (DeadPoolX @ Jan 12 2009, 03:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Seeing as how I am not Canadian, I have trouble understanding a couple of issues. Here they are...

1. If a woman wishes to have a double-barreled name (i.e. Smith-Jones), why must she fill out a "change of name" form in British Columbia? It wouldn't take a huge leap in logic to understand that a woman with a double-barreled surname, after reviewing her birth and marriage certificates, wouldn't be the same person. As far as I know -- and I may be wrong about this -- this isn't a problem in other provinces. Perhaps the worst part about it is the woman will have her birth certificate legally changed. Why should she have to go through that? It seems odd and unnecessary.

2. What is the deal with Quebec? I know it's part of Canada, but there seems to be some animosity between Quebec and the rest of the Canadian provinces. I'm not quite sure I understand the reason why or the origin of it. Could someone here help me out a little?
  1. That's one of those province-specific rules--akin to the state-specific rules for driver's licence (term, transfer of foreign DL, ...) in US
  2. That's a lot more complex to explain, but I'll try (I was naturalised to Canada in 1982, came to US on TN-1 in 1994, got GC in 1999 and naturalised to US 2005)

Basically, there was competition between European powers for New World lands (of which there was lots). France got the areas now in St. Lawrence/Great Lakes basin of Ontario and Quebec as well as a large swathe of territory extending from Minnesota to Louisiana, but the French population in that whole vast area was relatively small (by 1757, less than 100,000). British got the Eastern Seaboard from Maine to Georgia, and their descendants from 1600 to 1757 increased to about 2 million.

In Seven Years War (1754-1760--European 1756-1763), France lost the huge territory (as it basically didn't have the population base to defend such a huge area, and Britain had better navy which could cut resupply--this may be the reason that both Britain and France sent their bottom-of-barrel commanders to North America during that time). Initially, Britain tried to appease the newly-gotten French-origin colonists by giving them rights to expand into Ohio Valley, while denying the same to English-origin people of 13-colonies--which seeded 1775-1783 American Revolutionary War, and a flood of Royalists (those who supported British) to Canada. Eventually, the descendants of Royalists managed to outnumber those of the French so the British monkeyed around representations till 1867 (when Canada became a separate dominion).

I'll leave it at this point as the basis (as post-1867 history is even more complex).

This has already happened in American schools. When I was a kid, the class would stand up every morning and recite the Pledge of Allegiance while facing the U.S. flag. That was slowly phased out due to the idea that the pledge was "reducing the rights of those from other cultures." The odd thing about this is that although you were made to stand up, there was no requirement to say the words. You could stand there and daydream if you wanted.

I think the situation concerning both the Pledge of Allegiance and O Canada are moronic. If you don't want to deal with it, then either don't say it (and let others do if they wish) or move.
We have to stand and do the Pledge of Allegiance when I take my stepson to Cub Scouts. I still don't have it memorized- I just fake my way through it. As a Canadian, I don't know if its rude or not to stand there and say nothing.
I think saying nothing is ok good.gif

I also think this whole anthem thing is really weird.
When I attended school in Calgary, it was accepted that I could stand silent during "O Canada" as well as flag-salute (yes, they did have this prior to 1975 at least with the generalised words "I salute the flag, the emblem of my country; to her I pledge my love and loyalty").

QUOTE (sandy44 @ Feb 12 2009, 10:17 AM)
I am flying to LAX today from Ottawa via Toronto with my CR-1 visa. A few questions regarding Port of Entry:

- Would Pearson TO would be my port of entry ?
yes.gif

- Apart from the sealed package and my visa, do I need to take anything else?
The sealed package IS your visa; you will be taken to a separate room and fingerprinted for the plastic card.

- I have a two hours layover in TO before my flight to LAX. Is this time enough to get the immigration cleared (if this happens in TO)?
Probably (though three-hours would be better due to YYZ's confoozled PFI design)

CanadaArrival/Departure Dates

I just recorded the dates since getting my passport. I couldn't remember the earlier ones either!!
Even that could be problematic for many Canucks, as entries into US aren't always stamped into the passport (nor are re-entries to Canada stamped).
