Last winter we traveled into Canada with no problems crossing at Niagara Falls. We showed ONLY my wife's green card, and my US Passport. The Canadian had no issue letting my wife enter Canada with just the green-card, NO non-US passport presented to the Canadian customs officer.

I would just present either green-card OR Canadian passport when entering Canada, not both.
Eh, Charlotte may have been meaning US Customs/Immigration gave her grief (in lieu of Canuck)--Pearson Airport (like the eight others that service US destinations) has a Customs/Immigration PFI.

Visas are not required for: "persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence; "
So I would suggest your wife carry all documents with her; expired Green Card (assuming she is still in possession of it), letter from USCIS of extension, and valid passport. If she has a driver's license, it wouldn't hurt to have that as well. All documents to prove her identity, US status, and citizenship.

My wife's non-DL ID from MVA has an expiry date of five years after issue (which was 2 years ago). If she takes driving lessons (and has it converted to a DL), will the new DL retain the old ID's expiry date?

The question is really if FedEx will accept it--to which the answer is probably yes. USCIS certainly has no issues about accepting FedEx.

petewy is aVenezuelancitizen, based on the original post--so no visa will be required. The I-551 in this case is meaningless for entry into Venezuela, but is required for US re-entry.

Today we received a (redirected snail) mail postmarked 2009/05/05 and notice-dated 2009/05/04 that Pras' I-751 had been approved on 2009/05/04 (the email-notice we received much later 2009/06/18 of "card production ordered").

So does the company, especially for a loooooonnnnnng drive as the OP is considering.

I remember renting a 15' Budget (Penske) truck to move from Dallas to Atlanta. Extremely uncomfortable, the drive took 3 calendar days--and I had to spend more in hotel costs as well as the truck's bucket seats were non-reclining (and I also couldn't lie ACROSS the cab).

In contrast, a U-haul I rented to move from Atlanta to DC was somewhat of an improvement--due to U-haul's bench-seat configuration, I could lie across the cab and drive longer stretches, so the drive took only 2 calendar days (the distance is similar to that from Dallas to Atlanta).
