CanadaFavorite Things About Where You Live(d)?
(note: having renounced Canuck citizenship last year, ....)

Calgary, AB:
  • promenades (walk/bike paths) along Bow River
  • lovely scenery (Rockies visible on clear days from many parts of city, including airport, on clear day)
  • nice view of (distant) downtown from airport
  • easily-navigable downtown area
  • many nice restaurants of multiple ethnicities

(metro) Atlanta, GA:
  • easy connection (road) to parts of FL, TN, AL, NC, SC
  • some lovely sceneries
  • good church
  • reasonably-priced accomodations (plus availability of gas-cooking/heating)

Memphis:
  • reasonably-priced accomodations
  • no state income tax

(metro) Dallas:
  • as with Memphis, but sales tax lower (and not imposed on groceries)
  • church where pastor understood (albeit had no solution/nonsolution for) issue I was going through when I phoned from a distance

Metro DC/Balto:
  • some beautiful scenery (such as GW Parkway, just south of Potomac)
  • excellent prayer-oriented Indian church

CanadaAP & GC Question???
I'll attempt to answer it.

Due to miscommunications within USCIS (you thought that they had fixed that "inheritance" from INS?), you will probably be OK.

CanadaEver see a fatality from an accident?
I recently saw a mobike accident in South Balto, around where 95 and 695 "intersect"; the mobike rider was lying on the median (appeared at minimum to be unconscious--I can't say for certain he was alive) and the mobike was turned-turtle about 150 m away.

CanadaNew fees- ouch!

There are two 'parties' of the Government involved in this process - USCIS and Department of State (DOS).

Which cannot even coordinate INTERNALLY (as I found out in 1999) let-alone with each other.

USCIS raised their fees 2 or 3 years ago while the DOS fees remained the same. DOS is in charge of the Consulates, so fees paid to the Consulates for Visas, etc. are going on this time as DOS increases its fees. USCIS fees are remaining the same.

The 'explanation' for the increase is that the money is needed to cover the actual costs involved in issuing the visa. Certain visas are considered more labour-intensive - including the K-1 visas - and thus are being raised substantially higher.

The 'explanation' for the USCIS increases several years ago was virtually the same - except we found out that money was being diverted from immigrant application processing to ICE activities and programs as well  .

This is where the fee increases hit the hardest- when you have a ready made family who is coming to the US. It is expensive enough for one, but for more it does become very pricey.

CanadaNew fees- ouch!

A big "thank you" to each of you who responded. I have read SO much about this process and have saved SO many links that I just couldn't seem to remember where to find the info I was looking for.
Add me the the list of people who feel this process is excessively complicated and ridiculously expensive (times 4).

Eh, it's a lot LESS complicated than trying to get a GC from a TN-1 (which I did--and not via marriage to USC, which I didn't consider as viable), especially when the TN-1 holder's birth country is one of those on "clobber-list" (exactly the case for this India-born erstwhile Canuck).

CanadaNew fees- ouch!

AOS is really a total $1010 because you file for the I-131, I-485 and I-765 together for $1010 (also includes biometrics). The separate fees are only if you file each application separately (I think).

True enough--filing as packet-deal has been known to be cheaper since 2007 (as not filing I-131 and I-765--although we wound up not needing AP or EAD, I still filed these as "better safe than sorry"--does not reduce the I-485 fee).
Saddle BroncMale02010-06-01 15:01:00
CanadaNew fees- ouch!
Values (for VJ-related forms only):
  • I-129F $455 (unless K-3)
  • I-130 $355
  • I-131 $385 (incl biometrics $80)
  • I-485 $930
  • I-751 $465
  • I-765 $340

http://www.uscis.gov...000b92ca60aRCRD

Are the fees in anyway based on how much it actually costs to process things or just randomly set with the idea to make as much money as possible?

Answer: it is a "safe" revenue-raiser for budget-planning (but the fees are NOT randomly raised, nor does it actually have to do with actual costs--other than those foisted on payER).

CanadaVaccinations for Canadians seeking residency in US

Public Health for your province should have a record of them since they are required for school. A lot of Canadians have had luck with their health department. Further, if that fails, you can get a titre test done by your doctor (should be covered by provincial health care) to scan for your anti-bodies

Good luck.

 Commonest vaccines needed are MMR, varicella and TD. For the first two, titre works quite well.

CanadaDriving a Rental Car into Canada

As long as you are a US resident/"greencard holder" there is no issue with it for Canada Customs purposes.

Actually, they don't even mind if you are a temporary visa (such as TN-1) holder, or even if you have a US DL; I rented a car at DTW once in 1996 (when I still had my Alberta licence) and drove it to Ayr (near 401's exit 268) for a weekend.

Yes he is lol, bought a 3 hour drive there and back, but he also works at different locations so he goes to the office in Herndon then ends up at falls church, or Alexandria, even Waldorf one day. I cannot wait to live in Northern Virgina almost everywhere is nice except ummm leesburg we went to see some "apartments" in leesburg and well its just not the place for raising children or atleast not what I saw.

You can try "Oaks At Falls Church" (2-BR/1BA no-den runs $1,400-1550 rent-plus-utilities) and the facing "Peachtree At McLean" (pricier than Oaks).

Both located about 1 mile inside 495 on VA-7.

CanadaEdmonton POE

.. was a SNAP!

We were there early. VERY early. Our flight was delayed 2 hours due to chicago weather so we had a 4 hour wait in Edmonton. Lame. Anyway, we got to customs and I told the guy I was activateing our K1/K2 visas. He was listening to metallica at his little cubby so we talked about metallica for a bit. Then we were escorted to secondary processing where we sat and watched the news for about 20 minutes. They were really nice to my daughter and brought her a coloring book to entertain her. Eventually they called me up and he asked me my fiances name, then asked me about my kids "A" number. Apparently they gave her the same "A" number as I have which he found odd. I had no clue but he told me to email the consulate in Vancouver to double check. Anyway that was it. He stamped our passports, commented about the heat wave in the south, asked me how long the entire process took, and then photocopied it all. He kept our documents covered by the envelopes the entire time.

Thats it! He was really super nice and sweet.

Here I am in the south, sweating my brains out in this heat. 94 in September.. almost October! SHEESH. Wedding in one week, and we have out marriage license in hand.

Can't wait!

=)

One question (from looking at your siggy). Why did you decide on K-1/K-2, when you could have just gotten married and done a straight AOS (with your TD dependent as derivative) at somewhat less cost (time and $$ of the I-129F petiton)?

Sherbrooke St. (where I had my own CPIV medical) is maybe about 1 km from the Consulate--and you should probably allow 3 days for results (I don't know if since 1999, they've gotten any faster).

did you guys see how many Australian panel physicians there are in Canada?.. I think I counted at least 27.. :o

I'm guessing at why there are so few US-panel physicians.

Because lotsa Canucks head south on TN-1's (some--but not all--of whom convert them to H1-b's) and then do PERM-LC followed by AOS (including derivative TD/H4's), and very few of these choose CPIV.

CanadaIV Interview

Hi there.
I am from Alberta Canada and I know that the US Consolate in Montreal process all US Immigrant Interview. My question is Is anybody here from Canada have requested that the interview be transfered to the closest US consolate which is closest to thier address. Like for example Calgary is the closest from Edmonton? So would they do that interview in calgary instead of Montreal? Please let me know?

Prior to 1986 (I know my sister's 1985 interview was done in Calgary), it was possible. Sometime between then and 1999 (my own EB-3 IV interview, 1999/12/13--from a TN-1), State Department decided to "consolidate" all IV interviews at Montreal.

You can request it, but it won't be granted--you will have to "bite bullet" and make the trip to Montreal.

(I lived in Calgary 1971/09/12 to 1993/12/30)

Two alternate suggestions:
  • go to your nearest public library and use the computers/internet there--and print out the forms ($0.10-0.20/page)
  • go to a FedEx-Office (erstwhile Kinko's) location and use a machine there (lots pricier than the public library, but will work--and lots less $$ anyway than you're going to fork-out to USCIS)

CanadaBrining food products into the US?

Are you going through Customs at Dorval or just catching a connecting flight? I know my sister had her fruit confiscated at MCO on a flight from MAN.... but it was in her hand luggage. With the x-ray machines all the luggage goes through now they may see the mangoes as suspicious and remove them anyway.

To clarify--I haven't booked any such flight, but asking it hypothetically, using a return connexion path of MAA-(EUR)-YUL-IAD so as to be able to use the PFI at Dorval (which I suspect WOULD require clearance of Canuck customs before going to the PFI).

And on produce--the PFI's are generally quite lax in that regard (I've brought vegetables through more than a few times--in plain-old shopping bags, not even hidden).

I'm guessing that they think "well, it's passed Canada's guidelines so it should be ok for US as well".

I'll weigh-in by proxy on this. I got my GC (EB-3) at Montreal 1999/12/13, and activated it later the same day at Dorval (now Trudeau) POE.

Four hours is plenty of time. They will basically take the brown-envelope, hand you an I-94 with "K-1" and the expiry-date printed, and staple it to your passport (edit: for me they took an index-print and stamped I-551--the latter will NOT be done for K-1). As far as that X-ray, you won't need it after you exit the PFI successfully.

You may need to check if your husband has to get one even with a GC but citizens of Algeria require a visa to visit Canada.

US Green Card holders need no visa to visit Canada--but the analogous reverse is not true, if you need visa to visit US "ordinarily" you will need it to do so if you hold Canada-PR as well (prior to 2001, citizens of Commonwealth Countries with Canada-PR could visit without visa).
