Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionUS PR traveling abroad

My wife is a US Permanent Resident (recently removed conditions). She is from Myanmar and still has a valid Myanmar Passport. She and I plan to travel to Vietnam, Thailand, and back to her home this fall. I need some help to figure out how to go about arranging travel for her in regards to obtaining Visas to Thailand and Vietnam. Specifically, do we file for her as a Myanmar citizen since she still has a Myanmar Passport...

Yup!

...or is she considered a US "citizen"?

Nope

I realize she is not a Citizen technically, but this seems like a gray area for me. I would appreciate any expert help with this matter.
Thank you!
Martin

Nothing grey about it; only if she has a US passport can she be considered US citizen.

The letter (NOA-2) extends her residency for one year; she can use that to visit.

Typically seems to take six months--the timeframe may conflcit with biometrics timing, but....no other issues I can see.

Removing Conditions on Residency General Discussiontraveling on extension letter

hello , i want to travel on the extension letter to India. i feel little nervous traveling with just a piece of paper . i am not worried about problem at the airport in the USA(because they do recognize the extension letter) but i am worried about India , i don't know if i would be allowed to board the plane with just a piece of paper or if they will even recognize the extension letter . Is there anyone who has traveled to India on extension ?
thanks in advance.

We travelled to India a little over 2 years ago (when Pras still hadn't received the 10-year GC). While it is true that they haven't seen very many of these, they do recognise it and will let you board. Allow another hour for them to process.

That's "within normal parameters"--Pras received approval 2009/05/15, but the mail was "yellow-sticker diverted" to our new address and arrived 2009/06/18. Her 10-year GC was received 2009/07/03.

How about wait until you are ready to file N-400 and THEN do a change of name (including last name)? The one time that it can be done as packet-deal.

My fiancee is definitely loving the PI mangoes..

He even thought of bringing an extra bag just to be filled with my mangoes when he gets to be here on January.. Haha!

My question, would that be allowed?

If not, what can you advise us to do to sneak few pieces of mango..?hehe

I just want his relatives to try our mangoes..SOO proud to be PINOY!

BEST MANGOES ARE ONLY FOUND IN THE PHILIPPINES..(i guess..hehe)

hope anybody there could advise us..

Thanks!=D
You may be allowed to bring mango-leather or tinned mangoes in, but don't bother trying to bring in fresh ones--customs officials will definitely "shop" them off you.

Philippinesgreen card holder want to go new zealand
A rather simple answer to the question of GC-holder wishint to visit a country is:
If the country is other than
  • Canada
  • one where the GC holder HAS citizenship (or which has a reciprocal agreement with one-or-more of GC-holder's country(s) of citizenship)
the GC holder will need a visa to enter the country.

Most places (exception being Canada*) if you're headed on through-flight to US, it's a scot-free pass through customs.

So, likely the pirated s/w will sail-through Manila; can't say about LAX, but I've rarely seen customs actually CHECK whether s/w is valid copy.

It is possible to do N-400 up to 90 days prior to the 3-year anniversary of your GC issuance (in your case CR-1)--even if you do not have the 10-year GC in hand (copies of the extension letter and temporary 2-year GC will work as evidence).

PhilippinesBringing Mother-in-law to USA for long visit?

I haven't heard about travelers visa but I know tourist visa and multiple entry good for 10yrs. If her nanay is rich that is very possible. Rich meaning got car, big house, productive business, high paying job, big bank account with activity- anything that will show that she is coming back to the Philippines and can independently support her visit in the US.

Actually, a letter from OP stating that he will provide for MIL's needs while in US, combined with some assets (house/condo) will work quite well.

Is she already here and got married? If so, I believe she just needs to file an AOS. She will have to prove in her interview that she did not come to the US with the intention of getting married, but that it was a spontaneous decision once she got here. I would ask this question in the AOS forum, they'll probably have more help for you. smile.gif Good luck to your sister-in-law and congrats to you again. smile.gif

There is no I-130 to be filed in a K-1 marriage, simply AOS.

If you file a packet-deal I-485 (with I-765 and I-131), you get an all-inclusive rate of $1,010; but if you wish to exclude the I-131 and/or I-131, you still fork out $1,010--but will need to pay extra if you wish to add the two parts on later)

My initial idea was to do a civil wedding in VA or MD, and then the church ceremony in MI (Novi)--until I was asked what the requirements were for civil wedding in MI.

I then called Oakland County (where Novi is located) on this, and found out that for a church wedding there, it could be combined (an ordained pastor resident in that county--which contains several towns/cities such as Farmington Hills, South Lyon, Pontiac, ...--was deputised already to perform the church ceremony)--and that was what we finally did.

MK, does the US allow (born outside US) passport applicants to suppress the birthplace from the bio-info?

To my knowledge, no. However, a person may sometimes be permitted to substitute the name of the city for the country. For instance, many dual Israeli-Americans born in Jersualem have U.S. passports stating "Jerusalem" as their place of birth, which is more ambiguous than stating "Israel." I believe Canada does the same thing, but in that case I think it's due to the undetermined political status of Jerusalem. (Someone with knowledge of Canadian procedure please correct me if I am wrong here.)

Actually, Canada allows complete suppression of birthplace (you forgot my being a dual Canuck-Yank maybe?).

...However, if Anmar became a U.S. citizen and travelled under an American passport, he would have a much better chance of being permitted to enter. I would not suggest flying into Ben Gurion in Tel Aviv, but rather flying to Jordan, then taking the land route across King Hussein Bridge (it's less than an hour's drive from Amman anyway.) It's always a roll of the dice, depending on how tense the situation is at the time. And even a U.S. passport will state his country of birth, so he should certainly expect a rigorous interrogation at the border.

This site sells tatreez too, although not dresses.

http://www.mashrabiya.com/prod.htm

They are really worth the inflated prices if you think about the work the women put into them. Some pieces takes months to up to a year to complete. My family knows a woman that used to help with a co-op that sold tatreez, so my Mom's house is just full of pieces, dozens of cushions, table runners, a few wedding dresses, vests, jackets. I have several cushions and a few purses myself. The cheaper stuff is often done by machine, rather than hand. If I get a chance, I will post some pics of my pieces.

I have a catalog somewhere that sells a wide selection of tatreez. If I can locate it, I will post the info.

Rebecca

You are absoulutly right Rebecca. Why is it that we are willing to pay so much for art elsewhere? I think I may just support the artists (I think this is a form of art) of the ME and order one. (F)

I definitely agree with supporting the artists. That's why I recommend going to the source, or as near to the source as possible. Each link in the chain adds their own markup, and takes their own profit. By the time an item gets to an American importer, it has been marked up hundreds of times over the modest amount paid to the desperately poor women in the refugee camps who produce these handicrafts. Most of the profit is not going to the artisans who badly need it, but rather to rich people who make a living off buying cheap over there and reselling at huge profits.

This is the reason I advise buying directly from the West Bank or next-door in Jordan. That's what really helps the artists and the economies where it's most needed. If you want to pay hundreds of dollars to an importer for an item that the artist back in the village gets $10 or $20 for, that's your decision. But don't fool yourself about who is taking the lion's share of the profit. I say this will all due respect.

So, except for volume produced by "manufacturer" (artist in this case), it's analogous to the retail price/supply chain where you have a Jobber, Wholesaler and Retailer between manufacturer and buyer (the bolded also translate as "Joinly We Ripoff")?

(in your example, it appears to come to "Jointly We Ripoff Artist and Buyer")

Middle East and North AfricaEating Pork

you're all going to hades and it's a zionist plot to discredit you in allah's eyes. you should at least sue the company

Actually I don't think any of our Muslim employees ate it since they only eat Vegetarian unless we have Halal meat. Its the Jewish employees I am most worried about.

JP, I wouldn't worry about it. In Judaism, non-kosher beef is not any better than pork (and I assume the catering company does not use kosher meats). So if the Jewish employees were lax enough about their observance of Kashrut to eat what they thought was non-kosher beef, I don't think they would be too freaked out to find out it was actually pork (or at least they shouldn't be, from a legal point of view).

Accurate enough. A Jew who eats meat not certified as kosher is unlikely to be observant--and unless having a specific distaste for pork, would not be freaked by eating it.

Same goes for non-observant Muslims (examples include Jinnah, Yahya Khan, king Khalid,...all of whom were drinkers; in the case of Jinnah, he also consumed bacon everyday).

True, though he is intending to attend a University once he gets here. Unfortunately though I just read that you have to prove that you won't abandon your country so it's probably as impossible as getting a visitor's visa. Oh well.

Perhaps at the time of issuance (for F-1); lots DO abandon after the fact (getting CPT/OPT and then converting to work visa such as H1-b, TN-1, etc).

For J-1, it is typically necessary to do some "home country residency" (which causes lots of migraines).

Your poll was obviously done out of anger because it makes no sense at all. You are asking 2 seperate questions and only giving the option for one answer. Furthermore you are taking the words that led to this poll out of context for your own personal enjoyment and justification.

The poll is supposed to make as much sense as the double standard does between what can be said about age and what can be said about race or religion. So, not, it doesn't make sense. Ignore it if you want. I simply want to know how it makes sense to defend calling some people's relationships offensive because of their ages, but not because of their races or religion.

Why the taboo on some and not others?

For inter-religious marriages, there is plenty of unfavourable comment in scripture (also, a high percentage would agree--without even looking at their scriptures--that it would be a bad idea).

Inter-racial OK so long as not inter-religious (nothing against it in scriptures).

Middle East and North AfricaHalal Food Poll

Hey JP..I wana ask you a question and I hope you wont be offended or take it the wrong way...it is more for my curiousity...but correct me if I am wrong you are Jordanian and raised in the USA right? or no? I was wondering being Christian arabe... does your family eat pork here in the US? I hope you donnot take this the wrong way...cos I donnot intend it badly...but I am so curious... I mean I was Catholic before converting...and ate pork...my family(who I have not lived with since 9yrs eats)...I donnot eat pork now of course, but when I do rarely visit with them, and they eat pork..I dont get all oooo yuk..haraaaaaam! and such with them...I just politely say sorry i dont eat pork anymore... Also I am curious how Christians in the ME (since I have never been in the ME) deal with pork... for some reason I think there is no pork there...but I could be wrong... I am mainly curious but also trying to think of how to resolve a mini issue I have with my husband: he says he will only eat halal food (which is great) but will also refuse to eat anything that my family might prepare (meat) unless it is halal...and there is pork present then he will just run away... any suggestions? I mean they know I donnot eat pork, my family I mean and they respect that...but I think if my husband made such a big deal about it with them...they would really dislike him... Note: in my native country halal meat is NOT really availible also my husband has not been out of NA so he has NO idea how life is outside of NA...he seems to think that being Muslim and/or obeying all laws of our religion and any other religion is soooo easy...(anyway sorry that was off topic of my question

I can answer some of your questions.

It would be unlikely for Christian Arabs to eat pork, as it is not customary to raise hogs in ME. Even in India, the vast majority of Christians (the exceptions being in some districts of Kerala and the Northeastern "7 sisters") don't consume it (and many do not even consume beef, but prefer chicken or lamb).

A solution for your hubby: if there are vegetarian items present in a meal, he can take those. As for "ok but not certified halal meats", hard to answer.
