Indian comic Amar Chitra Katha creator Anant Pai dies
2011/02/25 04:29 ET

Anant Pai, who helped launch India's comic book industry in the 1960s with a series on mythology, history and Indian legends, has died.

Mr Pai, 81, was the creator of the hugely popular Amar Chitra Katha series which told tales from the ancient Hindu epics, the Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Called "Uncle Pai" by fans, his series sold more than 100 million copies.

He received a lifetime achievement award at India's first comic convention held in Delhi last weekend.

His publishers said he died from a heart attack unexpectedly on Thursday. He had undergone surgery on Saturday for a fractured foot.

Beautifully illustrated and written in simple language, the comics have been a hit with generations of Indians.

Amar Chitra Katha sells about 3 million comic books a year.

Narasimha Rao faced opposition from Cong on relations with Israel: Advani
2011/05/22

Senior BJP leader L K Advani today said former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao had faced opposition from his Congress colleagues on establishing diplomatic relations with Israel as they feared this would affect their minority votebank.

In his latest blog posting, Advani praised Rao for establishing relations with Israel which was "fortified immensely during the six years of Vajpayee's NDA regime.

Advani recalled his visit to the US in 1992 when the Jews there asked him why India had not yet established full diplomatic relations with Israel.

"My party is fully in favour of full normalisation of relations with Israel. But we are not in power. The Congress party, which has been in power for the longest period since Independence, is opposed to it, and so are the Communist parties," Advani had then told the Jewish group.

Upon his return to India, Advani met Prime Minister Rao and discussed this issue. He asked why India was not establishing full diplomatic relations with Israel.

"I am all for it, but my party is not ready," Advani quoted Rao as saying.

Advani said he tried convincing Rao, saying India's policy towards Israel should not be "trapped in this imaginary apprehension over the reaction of some Muslims in India".

"After all several Muslim countries are planning to open diplomatic relations with Israel. Egypt and Turkey have already done so. Even Palestinians want to co-exist with Israel.

"Therefore, if something is in our national interest, we should explain it to people who may be opposed to it," Advani told Rao.

Advani said he suggested that the country's foreign policy should be "immune to such false considerations of domestic pressure".

He claimed that Rao agreed with him and formed a Group of Ministers to look into the matter and for evolving a "wider ownership" of such a decision.

The senior BJP leader praised Rao for keeping his word.

"The GOM made a positive recommendation. Today India has normal relations with Israel, fortified immensely during the six years of Vajpayee's NDA regime," Advani said.

The former Deputy Prime Minister recently played host to a group of 61 Americans, including Jews, who were visiting India to meet the Dalai Lama.

"They spent over an hour at our residence, learning how the BJP had contributed towards making India develop normal diplomatic relations with Israel," Advani said.

 Rao (albeit not as good character as Shastri--who had he lived would have been the architect of progress) was the bold PM India needed in early 1990's and hasn't been able to find since.

To OP: one possible way around this is if your spouse becomes USC then a second I-130 can be filed as "immediate relative" (this is allowed) which will be faster.

(caution: that requires that spouse actually be eligible to apply)

Asia: SouthFiancee just caught dengue fever :-/

I know when my son traveld to haiti he took malaria meds to prevent malaria before traveling during his stay and a week or so after.... do they also have something like this for Dengue fever?

No. Dengue is caused by virus (for which no approved vaccine exists) of same family as Yellow Fever virus (for which there IS a vaccine); only approved preventives are eliminating the skeeters, and/or preventing them from biting.

Asia: SouthFiancee just caught dengue fever :-/

Ouch, I feel for you brother. We have Dengue Fever here in Mexico too and luckily I've been able to avoid it thusfar, but many of my friends have had it and well, it sucks. She should get over it in about a week, but it will be a crappy week. I don't think that Dengue will hurt her chances at all because as far as I know it's like a cold and once it's out of your system then it's not contagious. But besides that, how would they even know she had it? Again, like a cold, I don't think that kind of thing would show up on a blood test...

Isn't dengue only spread by skeeters?

Anyway, once it's out of your system, you're immune to that specific type (and partly protected against the other three).

Even if you could take repellent (which aerosol you can't) different country mosquitoes react different to different repellents (found that out travelling europe). You'd be better off asking someone to bring some to you when they get you from the airport.

How about electronic repellent?

Asia: East and PacificDoes my fiancee have to be alone at the medical?

My fiancee is TERRIFIED of doctors. Especially male doctors. If she has to allow a male doctor to see her naked, then I think she might flat out refuse unless she can have her mother with her.

So now what?

Pras (who is a doctor herself) expressed the same fears.

I told her to pray for courage and "bite bullet" if it meant that the panel doctor was male.

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresCan my wife enter the US although she does not have her k-3 visa yet?

Hello,

I was wondering if my wife from UK can enter into the US without actually having her K-3 visa. We have just applied like 50 days ago and are in the processs of getting it.

Would like to hear about stories ect.

Thanks much!

JD

Legally, yes (so long as she has a VALID visa--if needed); but entry-allowance is at USCIS officious' discretion.

Replying in a forum DOES NOT MEAN that the poster is actually taking that path. You may see my replies in DCF or K-3--but I brought Pras in on K-1.

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresAre we being punished for being Canadians?

Should I abandon my I129 and file an AOS?

So far I have been pursuing K3 (I129). It is still pending at the moment at CSC.
Last week, I was introduced to a fellow Canadian who only filed for AOS after waltzing into
the US on the visa waiver program. They have been approved and living happily ever after.

Some correction--Canada and US ARE NOT on "Visa Waiver Program"; there is a completely different setup.

And, are you sure that this Canuck was just VISITING US originally--or did he/she enter on temp work (or student) visa (under which it is perfectly legitimate to file AOS)?

Now, why do most of us follow this K3 process, if an AOS is possible? For once you are don going through K3 we still have to go through AOS. I thought because I did not have an 'A' number or a I94, I had to follow the K3. Would someone kindly make sense... for I am praying I did not just waist time and money and will still waist more time and money when the case reaches Montreal.

Also, not true that AOS HAS to be done after K-3--a K-3 holder can do consular processing (continue processing I-130 at consulate--in which case he/she will have to make another trip to Montreal)

Plus, can you show me how you arrived at the "most" (considering many of the Canucks have done K-1)?

(and if you want something to REALLY grouse about, I can tell you my story of headaches and delays while pursuing an EB Green Card!)

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresCancel K3 petition and file K1
Intrinsic problem with the logic of this: K-1 is for fiancé(e) visa--so the petitioner and beneficiary must NOT be married where K-3 is for cases where they already are; I don't think annulling (or getting a civil divorce) to do K-1 instead of K-3 is workable.

Because the idea behind the K-3 was itself a chopf#ck combination of temp-to-perm visa.

QUOTE (babyonboard @ Jul 21 2008, 09:22 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
It's been a depressing eye-opener into visa bureaucracy but thank god for forums like these! Our situation is this:

I am a UK citizen and my wife a US citizen. We met a few years ago in Bolivia. A couple of weeks ago we got married in the UK and are planning to move to the US to give birth to a child in October. The key thing for us is to to be together for the birth and obviously to be together once our child arrives, but we have been a bit naive about the difficulties in doing this.

We are now trying to work out our options, and getting headaches trying to work it out, so here are a few questions I would appreciate any comments or thoughts on:

1. If I go in on a Visa Waiver Program (VWP) end of August and return within 3-months in November after birth, could my wife start process for K3 visa while I am still in the US?
Yes, she can.
QUOTE (babyonboard @ Jul 21 2008, 09:22 AM)
4. Is it possible for either of us to travel (myself under the VWP) whilst we have a K3 visa in the pipeline?
Yes

No, it will not affect your naturalisation-app; however, it does have a potential positive affect on the I-130 petition you will presumably file for your spouse; after you are naturalised, your petition changes category from FB-2A (spouse of immigrant) to a priority-1 (spouse/immediate-relative of US citizen).

Another option is---let him return home and then you can file K-1 (fiance) petition for him; the process, albeit longer, is much more-straightforward and less migraine-riddled.
