Middle East and North AfricaCalling all Maghrebi Peeps!
my sister-in-law doesn't speak any English just arabic and french and she didn't have any problems
in Atlanta. When she went home we did get a pass to go with her to her gate due to the language barrier.

Its easy. My sister-in-law came two years ago and this is what we did.

We wrote a letter of invitation for her to come for a visit.
filled out an affidavit of support and attached a copy of our bank statement.

she took it to the consulate along with the visa paperwork and they gave her a 3 month tourist visa
that was extended to 6 months at the airport when she arrived here in Atlanta.

she stayed the full 6 months and then went home.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, this really does help.

I found out additional information from my BIL last night. The last time he was in Maroc he purchased the home they were renting, so they pay the mortgage even though it is in their son's name. I'm hoping this 'might' help a little if it is needed.

We're probably going to be ok and this is just my obsessing about the details...as always Posted Image We have decided we are definitely going to file for both and provide what we have in addition to the invitation, financial support while they are visiting and their full itineraries. God-willing all will be fine.

I do have another question, my in-laws do not speak English, barely a few sentences, they speak Darija, Arabic and French. Did your family members who may not speak English have any difficulties in POE? My BIL thinks it's a good idea for him to accompany them on their entry if he can swing it. I'm saying it's not necessary, but figured I could find out other experiences.

Thank you again, I really appreciate it! Posted Image

Middle East and North AfricaCensus Race Question

Hi all,
Trying to finally fill out the Census form for my family. What did you all do about the "Race" Question? I know that technically people who are of North African and Middle Eastern descent are categorized as white, but my husband is clearly NOT white. He is of Moroccan Berber and some Touareg descent...

It seems to me that these racial categories are seriously limited...

Thanks for any ideas,
Carolyn

Technically they are caucasion but not white. I checked "other" and wrote next to it Arab.

Middle East and North AfricaVisitor visas for family..anyone with Moroccan SO's have any luck?

Hey that is great, when did your sister in law come to the US and stay the 6 months?
thanks

she came in March 2008. She was given a 3 month visa by the consulate which was extended to 6 months when she arrived.
I've since been told this is common. She was here until September 2008.

Middle East and North AfricaVisitor visas for family..anyone with Moroccan SO's have any luck?

So Mohammed has been here over a year now..all is well he has a good job in the hospital here and we've settled into a good routine...the only not so good thing is how much he misses his family. He talks to them online of course, but the reality of American life, 2 busy teenagers, the 2 of us working opposite shifts just life in general makes his time with them short. We have discussed the possibility of his mom coming to visit..she doesnt work there but she owns their home and there is a new grandbaby there who she watches while his younger brother and wife work. She would need his sister who is 33 and not married to accompany her. Anyone have any luck with this type of thing? It would be an awesome Christmas gift for him this year....

My husbands sister came for 6 months. She doesn't work, is not married and does not have any children and she didn't have a bank account. We just sent a letter of invitation, affidavit of support, and copies of our bank statements. She was granted a 3 month visa but when she arrived in Atlanta they extended it to 6 months when she went through immigration at the airport. So she stayed the full 6 months and then went home. There was no problem getting the visa it was granted the day of her interview.

US Embassy and Consulate Discussionkingston embassy mail out time

It hard to say. Sometimes they mail it within a few days and sometimes in a week or two.
I sent the DS-230 overnight since my fiance was not in Jamaica at that time and it took them two weeks to acknowledge it.
Have patience or you will drive yourself crazy.
If you go into the gerneral topic area and look for the regional thread click on latin america/caribbean and you will see a link called yardies. It is all about people going through the Jamaican Embassy. Great information.

I know patience is a virtue. Thank for the information.

It can take a month or more for the embassy to send the letter. You might try to have your fiance go to teh embassy with a copy of the NVC notice as well as the NOA2 and his passport. They should let him in to pick up his packet.

Good luck!

Thank you so much. I will have him go to the embassy. I sent him a copy of the NVC approval and i filled out the 230 form and went on line and filled out the 156. I may seem pushy but i want my man here.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionFiling for an Extension???

Our K-1 petition was approved, but it expires 12/28, and unfortunately the Embassy in Jamaica can't tell me when we will have our interview. I have been bugging them for since early October. They told me then that the dates for Nov were filled already, but that December dates would be given out at the end of October. Well, that hasn't happened yet---despite my desperate calls, and I don't know what to do...I guess I need to be prepared, so can someone please help? Do you have any other suggestions as to what I (or my fiance) can do? I know he plans to go to the Embassy personally to the Embassy this week, but I'm not sure what good that's going to do...maybe it will seem more urgent if he shows up....

Thanks

Hello hope this helps, my email to the embassy was answered in this way. They stated that the expiration date does not matter if you have already turned in Ds230 they are just waiting on it to be approved to start booking Dec appts. No one has Dec interviews yet due to the Embassy will be moving on Dec 8th. They should only have a down time of about 3- 4 days.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionVisa approved!

I will start by thanking the members of VJ for their useful advice and discussion in making this lenghty journey a reality. This is basically our experience with regards to the medical interview and actual interview at the US consulate Amsterdam,The Netherlands.I received my packet 4 on the 9th of Dec and had my medicals done on the 18th of Dec.
My mecicals was very simple.I first of all had to call both doctors for the physical examination and the x-ray the same day.For the physical examination,I had two immunization shots which cost 70 euros for both.My physical examination cost me 155 euros.During the physical examination, the doctor just asked me about my medical history like whether I have been hospitalised before,If am on any medication etc. After that,I had my x-ray which cost me 50 euros.

Our actual interview at the US consulate on the 9th Jan, I guess was the easiest part of this whole process. We were interviewed by a nice gentle guy.He didnt ask us any difficult question.what he only asked us is how me met? When last did we see each other?what do I do? and thats basically our interview although there was a slight mistake in my middle name, which he promised to correct within the shortest period of time.He didnt even ask for a single evidence of our ongoing relationship. He congratulated us and wished us a sweet and happy life together!

I am not a male and did not supply the marriage cert.- only the divorce decree (had to pull that sucker outta the frame, ha!) but the k-1 was approved on this end WITHOUT the marriage certificate. Wonder if it has something to do with petitioner/beneficiary?

But... based on your post in the other thread, you have not had your consulate interview yet... THAT is where they request the marriage document.

I had my interview and both were requested take it just to be sure. Better safe then sorry and get blue slipped.

We had a ticket, but it isn't required. Honestly no one asked at the embassy about it. DOn't worry about interview stuff until you start getting notices anyway.

As a former Marine, I have had a few of these conversations with my wife too  First, her uncle was a Soviet era "marine" (a sailor), and we had to sort all that out at dinner one night. Then the discussion about why the guys at the embassy (we only saw one Marine in Kiev) are mostly contract security. The situation is even more pronounced in Minsk, where the US Marines are all inside the embassy, presumably as a security measure - with militsia surrounding the embassy on the street, and contractors on the exterior gates. Try explaining that the embassy Marines actually went to an etiquette and manners class - to make them appear less like the attack dogs that they are

RAH!!! Devil Dawg. Yes, Anna saw the typical DI and the "trash in the highway" and she saw the all famous Squad Bay "House of Pain" I explained to her the "Cat box" at PI. lol, lol, She saw the "Gold Foot prints". Very much the same situation as you. Had to explain everything. I was in 1982-1992. Just before the wall came down. Yes, my son went to the class you spoke of. He was going to pull embassy duty but got excepted to Mecap instead. Anna wants to see the Drill team when she comes here. I have a friend at Barracks 1 that can arrange for us to see them. The day we were there, they had two in blues and i saw two more in ultils which is rare at a embassy and that was this past Jan.

Anna being the "pyschologist" began to understand our marine "ocd" ways, lol.

Best of Luck

won't be a problem in Kiev.

I would like to thank you for posting. You and your wife am i sure have helped many in this process. I have read many of your post's before i posted.

If i remember correctly you had dinner with someone from Vermont and describe it very well. As i have stated I am a computer engineer. In this process now during the digital age I am so confused as to why? they USCIS as not gone to a digital submission for these visa's?

It would seem this would speed up the process 10 fold. Think of it, If "we" are having to input this info into the system that in and of itself would save time not to mention the FBI could begin to run the check at that point. You culd have checks and balances in the system and even a "red flag" notice. Just food for thinking.

I hope i get luck and match your timline but i am prepare to wait it out. I was pleased to that you think Anna and i will have no problems. My mind set has always been prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

I will tell a funny story here about Anna and Me. As i told she is a psychologist and I am a computer engineer and a non active US Marine. I have been out for a long while but old habits die hard. My yougest son in a Crew Chief on a Marine Cobra Squadron now.

While in Kiev Anna and I walked by the Embassy. She stopped and looked. Anna asked me "Who are those military men?"

I laughed and told her "US Marines" I had no idea she did not know about Uncle Sam's Mis Guided Children (USMC)

I greeted my fellow Marines "oooooo" and then the Marine returned "rah" i told him "outstanding Devil Dawg"

Anna notice that quickly. She asked me "what was that?"

She asked me "What military were you in David" I smiled and told her "You are looking at it" I did not realize this would spark her thinking and she wanted to know now. As we hung out in and around the square we went to get some coffee. She was asking questions about my life during this time and she had shock as i told her what I had seen and how i was trained. I told her later I would show her a video of it and she could see it.

SO, youtube to the rescue, Anna was able to see first hand boot camp Video's. She was stunned. She asked me "Why are they so rude and harsh?"

LOL LOL LOL Oh my God! I told her "Anna they have a plan and that plan has worked for years and for sure produces a proven product"

You have to remember, Anna and from her background and training had seen nothing like this before. I told her "I have one more video you can watch on youtube. Then she saw the silent drill team. At first, many people miss the whole point of that. A squad , many Marines, moving as one, one sound, total perfect. Also, if you decide to watch them notice they are all the same size.

Anna told me after watching this "I see more of you now and understand your actions"
One of Anna's questions has always been to me "why am i so detailed?" I gave her the building a home example and have to have a plan.

For me and her, it was quite simple to build our file because i had been building it for a while. I had everithing. I knew to keep all reciepts while there and plane boarding passes. While there we went and had her birth cert translated.

I hope you and your wife continue to have a happy life and all success to you and her.

Thanks for sharing your story...best of luck to you and Anna.

Why do you have a lawyer? If your case is uncomplicated, you can probably just do a lot of reading on second K1 visa attempts and follow the guides here on VJ.

Well, the reason i made the choice for the having the lawyer was purely to have a second set of eyes on the application and if we hit some complication there is no additional cost to me as to have them follow up also. I had used this attorney before in my first case and one thing this attorney's office does is have some one meet Anna and go over the file and tutor her before the actual interview. This attorney is good and has been in business many years. This is all he does. I fully understand it will not speed up many case in any way.

First Time you did not go to Kiev, you went to Warsaw Poland. Back then, you got your Visa then same day as interview and were free to travel that same day.

I am not sure now if they still require a round trip ticket or not still? I have not seen anyone mention that?

Sure, that is what it boils down too in every case. I have met all the requirements and it really depends on what that person had for breakfast that morning. I have no red flags as to my first case happen ten years ago. I read a thread here where a man had four K-1 and was approved for a 5.

It was for sure a wild read about what he went through and it ended for him badly and sad. That is what this forum is for. Exchange of ideas and information. I wish you success Sir, in all you Do.

David,

Thanks for sharing your experience.. We all apreciatte that!!
I hope your case goes through fast, mine is going to over 5 months and don't have interview's date set yet :(
But you'r right saying that now we're all luck to have internet, skype and all technologies wich brings who we love to close, easy!

Best wishes on your new marriage!

Gisele

You are welcome. I have some experience in this being my second time. For sure, the trade we have made back then to now is the internet, in that we added 3 months by having Skype and things like that. One thing is for sure now. It made me go digital in my files. First time, Everything was mail and copied. You would have to call into USCIS then INS to see if you petition was approved. Call your Congressman, this may help. Not sure if it does but it does let them know someone is looking.

Computer and digital camera's make it far easier in documenting your wife and you when adjusting her status. For sure we have to pay attention to that and you can never excuse keeping records. The one thing for sure i would advise everybody to at least get your new wife onto a power bill jointly and start build her credit and get her onto a credit jointly. This is undisputed evidence of support and a real marriage. Photos Photos Photos of you and her and your home and friends and family. Keep everything.

In the visa process things are out of our hands once we drop the packet. All of our work is done before. That is why i keep everything because you may need it in the future. The one reason I hired a attorney was just to have a second pair of eyes on my file and if something happens the can represent us. The money was nothing, I just wanted to insure our success.

I am not saying my way is the only way at all. It is just the path I picked. Sadly as well I have the experience with couples around the Atlanta area whom had troubles. Some were good couples other suffer them same fate as I did but, I do not regret anything.
Someone in this thread asked why i went back to same country.

I had been traveling to Russia and Ukraine since 1995. I love both country's and their people and culture. Just because I had one back experience with one person does not mean all are bad. One thing is for sure the ladies i met from these countries do value their families and family. I am not saying other ladies from other countries do not, they do. I am just stating what I liked.

One thing is for sure, We have to Thank God for being in the USA. We do have a chance to make it here. The people who come here for the first time are over power by the chances in life we have here and take for granted.

Just take the time to explore the chance for your new spouse in your area from education to entertainment. This will help out so much.

I think the hardest thing for my ex- wife she would get lost when driving in Atlanta. Yes, she had GPS. She would call me and tell "I am lost am here?"

Ok, where is here? See my point. Show her around. Make sure she or he knows the surroundings. Important phones are a must. He or she must have them in a place on their person. This came in handy many times.

These things just come to mind. All the best to every one!!! God speed.

I think slow and steady is the best thing, and you seem to be on the right track. You no doubt already know that one meeting is worth about 1,000 email and phone calls. Keep in mind all the legal ways you can protect yourself too, if need be. How did you meet?

Oh yes, I spent 20 days there in January. yes, photos with friends and Parents and the whole nine yards. I am planning on going back for interview when that happens. We back a file full of chat logs, phone bills, photos, bank statements, life insurance you name it they have it. Divorce degrees passport photos affadavits of intent to marry, i covered everything leaving nothing to chance.

I met her online at a marriage agency. We quickly moved away from that and she deleted her profile and I did the same. I know a few things a about that business model being a computer engineer. Learned alot more from Anna.

Anna works as a Psychologist at a children orphange. She speaks fluent english. When the crisis hit here, it hit there as well. She found work for a couple of months at the marriage agency there in her hometown. She would translate and escort ladies when Men would come to visit. But, there were not many visits happening during that time. BUt the stories i have heard from her are amazing and i mean not all are good.

I supported her during this time with money so she would not feel pressure.

When the crisis was over the orphanage called her back to work and she has been there ever since. I, being a adopted child visited that orphange. The kids loved her to death. I walked a mile in her shoes and have the photos to show it.

Now, understanding it could be six months before she is here. I am telling her to prepare to come her and spent time with her friends and family. I want her to have the internet installed in her parents home so she can skype with them and her friends and so her parents can have photo from here as well. Been het something from me before and know what to expect.

Just hope time passes quickly. I just hope someone can get some thing that can help them.

Well, Anna and I have spoken for over two years. I wanted some one in my life but, I wanted to make sure things were different the second time around. Anna and I have no reason to commit fraud. I do not have time for that and do not want another fruad in my life for sure. If anything, it shows I can and I will uphold my end of the deal as I did in the past.

I hired the same attorney that did my first K-1 visa because we attached my first k-1 to it to show that i did uphold every point of the visa. It is the people who do it legally that have to pay the price of sins of others.

I wish all the best to all here.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsSecond time around
Where I am at now. This is my second time around in the K-1 process. After being married to a Ukrainian lady for ten years we divorced in August of 2007. If I had to give one reason of why we divorced I would say lack of trust on her part and not wanting to adapt or change to a USA of life. She is now remarried and having the same problems now.

There were a number of things I did before she came here and understand things this time around will be very different.

Anna and I have taken a lot of time speaking and I paid for her to go to school there in Kirovograd. She now speaks fluently and we will not face the same problems Natasha and I faced with language. This is a big one, if you lady can not communicate her feelings and ideas it is a problem.

Do not discount how she will react upon her coming here. I mean simple life skills like going to grocery store to going to a café and ordering from the menu. Natasha, it took us six months for her to communicate “sour cream” should have seen her face once she tasted it again her.

I had taken the steps before Natasha came (Natasha my ex-wife) to have her friends or at least from that part of the world. (Big mistake on my part) I had obtained a Georgia drivers manual written in Cyrillic. I brought her into Atlanta so she would get her EAD card at the POE. I had her a car, and had her already set up for English classes for her and her son German.

The first six months she (Natasha my ex-wife and her son German) adapted to life her in the South in the State of Georgia. As far as English was concerned it was good for her because you know we all speak slow here and that was a plus.

My family welcomed her with open arms. My friends did the same but Natasha was cold and disconnected from them to the point it turned my friends off. In fact, Natasha has no Americans friends to this day and she has been here since April 1999.

I disclosed everything to Natasha, meaning I taught her banking, I had built her credit score to 820. I was trying to show her how to pay bills and how to budget. This was something she did not care about. She wanted me to do it. I told her I wanted her to at least know how in case something happened to me. I showed her my insurance policies I mean everything.

I was a Vice President at a computer company and Natasha wanted to work. I got her a job making 20 a hour repairing laptop computers. Full benefits everything. She work at our company for a year when she decided to work at Macy’s making 12 a hour? That was when I was introduced into the “Russian Shopping Network”. These ladies were unbelievable when it came to a discount card. They understood where the other Russian girls worked, how much employee discount they get and when that stores sales happen and even if they got a discount when using a credit card.
By 2005, Natasha and I could not be in the same room with out her being unreasonable and starting a fight about something meaningless. It was all about her. My father had just died in May and my mother was dying and I caught hell about that even.

Needless to say I was not staying at home and was staying and caring for my mother and I was staying in Atlanta. I was still paying for everything and supporting the family but
Really that was all Natasha wanted and she was dating at this point but I could not turn my back on German (Natasha’s son at this point).

It was clear we were not happy and she and I agreed to Divorce and I wanted to make it right with her. She told me she had been unreasonable in the relationship and she knew what I had done for her and German. She told me all she wanted was the car and for me to pay off her credit cards and give her some cash to move to California. I agreed.

I paid off 18 thousand in credit debt of hers. She kept the 2003 Nissan Murano. In that January I gave her 10 thousand in cash and we signed the divorce documents and that August if 2007 it was over.

I had met the requirements of I-864 and everything. I am not angry at Natasha and wish her all the best and for sure I miss German.

I had not adopted German because of the documents and Natasha could have become a US Citizen but she did not and had a hang up about that as it pertained to travel but things have changed since then. I am not sure if Natasha is a citizen now or not.

Natasha and I have spoken since then a few times. I remember in May of 2008 she called me and asked me “David, when is Holden’s birthday?” Holden is my youngest son and is a US Marine. I asked Natasha “You mean to tell me you do no know Holden’s birthday and we were married all those years?”

I told her, and then she told me she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had a lump in her breast and the went on to tell me she also had “OCD”. Then she asked me “Why I did not tell her she had OCD?” I had to laugh and tell her “You did not listen to anything else I told you why would you listen to that?” She laughed at that point. Then a few weeks later she e-mailed me to let me know the breast cancer was a false read.

I am not saying I am perfect and I did everything right in this relationship. We were both we wrong but now we are moving on.

The process back then in 1999 took 90 days

I file on Jan 17 1999 and Natasha was her April 5 1999.

Many things have change since then the way we speaking meaning Skype and ICQ as to compared to letters every 3 weeks. Natasha when speaking to me would have to walk to a friends home where she could sent a e-mail to me.

Anna has internet in her home. It is very easy for us to speak and sent sms back and forth it is almost like she is here with me now.

The things that I have done differently with Anna is a lot of speaking. Of course Anna is from the Ukraine but for sure the stereo type of the USA is the land of milk and honey and all dreams come true if they make here. As all Americans know this is far from the truth. I have tried to paint a very factual truth of to what is happening in my day to day life and I have given Anna two of Dave Ramsey’s books so she will understand the meaning of money here.

I understand Anna’s background and she understands mine. My parents were married 52 years. Anna’s parents just celebrated 28 years of Marriage. Natasha’s parents were divorced and that happen at a early age. Anna has her own flat and her own job. Natasha lived with mother and waited tables at a bar. That was the only job Natasha could find at the time. Anna has a master’s degree in Psychology. Natasha told me she had a college degree but found out later she did not have a degree.

Anna has scanned her degrees and I am in the process of having then translated so Anna can attend school when she arrives to have a good job.

I have advised Anna to teach school so she can have the benefits and the time off during the summers to travel back to her homeland.

I have a car ready and waiting for her and this will be the first task we will under take. I sold my home and I am in process of relocating to Jacksonville Florida. I will stay in a apartment until Anna arrives sometime this summer so she can choose a home for the first time in her life.

When Anna and I started speaking and we decided to move forward I kept everything understands we would arrive at this point. It was very simple for me to put the file together for her visa.

In this, it has been a hard road. I lost Natasha, German, My Dad, My Mom, and over one million in cash. I lost my home to foreclosure, lost my cars and everything. I slept on a couch in a fight gym in Atlanta for over a year and walked to work and back. I have been tied up in court trying to get back the money due to a bad partner in a business deal. My court date is set for this July and there has been talk of settling and I work ge back the cash I lost.

I have told Anna all of this. She knows all and she has walked with me in this. Now, my life has turned for the better. I have a great job, great life, In great shape now. I have lost over 100 pounds and work out everyday. For my 45 years people can not believe I am that age.

So, I hope so one can get something from my story the Second time around.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsWHich POE'S give a ead card or do they still do that
Ok, The way it used to work was you got your rad card and it was good for 90 days. That got you on track to get your SSN card. Of course you had to file for work authorization at that point but wondering is the same process is in place and which POE's still do this. I know Atlanta was doing it in 1999 with my first k-1 visa.

Lol, yes. if you look at the "immigration Timelines" you can see nothing is really happening with K-1s right now. " Gary and Alla" have a post here where they had dinner with one of the directors or something and Gary asked alot of great questions to him. It was one of the best post i have read here. Gary explains that they do pull clerks or case worker off K-1s and place them onto other types of Visa's. This could be happening right now. March and April was really nothing happening at all. I hope it gets better for all of us. And Vermont wakes up and makes it happen for us. We will see.

With no pendind interviews that i can see from Portal, How longs does it take Kiev to issue a interveiw date? Meaning average number of days? With no interviews does Kiev issue the dates quickly? Trying to get some sort of average.

Well, you have to remember this will be my second "Ukrainian Lady" i have taught to drive. They adapt very quickly. First time around "Natasha" was behind the wheel her third day here.
With in two weeks she passed her exam. Anna i have a honda accord loaded with everything on it. I felt like it was a safe car for her and she would fit into handling int quickly. Down here in Kingsbay it is not like driving in Atlanta for sure. Yes, I love the heels too for sure. I will meet you in Atlanta and show where to buy heels for her. lol.
