Middle East and North AfricaMoroccan Passport Extension/Renewal
Hi,
We just did this and it is so easy. The consulate had actually lost my husbands id card a couple of years ago when he tried to register. So here is how it goes. We went to the consulate in New York and they took care of everything and was finished in about an hour. He extended his passport, registered with the consulate and they sent for him another moroccan id card. He got his passport back right then but the id card had to be sent to Rabat and it takes about 8 weeks to get it back. We also never registerd our marriage at the consulate and still haven't. We decided to do that on another trip to New York.
According to the moroccan consulate website if you don't have your national id card you have to go to the consulate to do all of this but if you do then you can do it by mail. However, when my husband tried to register by mail and sent his id card to the consulate they lost it, so my advice would be if you can go to New York do it in person.

QUOTE (Carolyn @ Mar 14 2008, 09:19 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hello fellow MENA folks,
Has anyone with a Moroccan spouse tried to extend or renew their passport from here in the states? My husband's passport expires in 2009, and we're wondering how long it takes, whether it is a smooth process, etc.

We did look on the Moroccan consulate's web page, and they had kinda contradictory information on there...on the one hand it says it takes about 10 days, on the other hand, it says to apply early, and that it can be done up to 18 months in advance. Hmm...

Also, we never registered my husband with the consulate or registered our marriage with the consulate. I hope that is not a problem. Also, I think that we will need to apply for a "family book," since we have a baby on the way.

Have those of you with kids registered the birth of your children with the consulate, or have you applied for a Moroccan passport for your little ones? I wonder if it is necessary, or if they are ok with just an American passport?

Sorry this is such a random post. Lots of questions and I'm not in the mood to edit right now star_smile.gif .

Have a happy Friday,
Carolyn

We bought one and sent it to my husbands family in Casablanca. When we were in Morocco last month I used it everyday to call
my kids back here in the states. The only requirement is high speed internet. It won't work with dial up.

Middle East and North Africa1 hour and half is enoug???

thanks to all for the information
that is my first time i inter to usa what i undestand that i should have atleast 2 to 3 hours
my husband book for my travel online what we should do its possible to cancel it ?

I live in Atlanta and use the airport often. When my husband arrived from Morocco in 2003 it took 2 hours to get through
immigration at the airport. They were very nice to him but had to go through all of his bags
its their protocol. The airport is big but the staff there are very nice, explain to them you don't know
what to do and someone will help you. I've never seen a short immigration line in Atlanta though, sorry.
If you can't change your ticket and miss your flight due to no fault of your own they will put you on another flight.
It happened to me in Paris several years ago. Actually I agree you need at least 2 or 3 hours to get through Paris airport. It's the hardest.

Good Luck

Middle East and North AfricaChanging name after marriage

I did not change the name on my passport or drivers license! Your name is on your license, you can include a copy and my name was also NOT changed on my social security card at stage of USCIS. NO problems!!!!!!!!!

In the state of Georgia its against the law not to have your legal name on your drivers license. And you only have 30 days in which to do it. There were a couple of cases here in Atlanta where a woman was stopped for speeding and arrested because the name on her license was not her legal name, which was her married name. If you change your name when you marry and have your social security card updated to that new name you have to change it on your drivers license. At least you do here.
Don't know about the passport. But I did send mine in for a name change and all they did was stamp it in the back that the name was legally changed to my married name. I still get bothered at airports and have to direct them to the back name change page. I'm so happy mine expires next year and it will be corrected on the picture page.

Middle East and North AfricaEmbassy needs my comment
When I filed our paperwork back in 2003 I wrote a cover letter for my packet. In it I basically introduced myself and explained how we met and why
we were filing for him to come here to live instead of me going there. I also added a contents page that listed everything in the file in order. I know when we went in for the interview 2 years later for his green card that letter was still in the file and the lady who did our interview told us that our file was put together very professionally. I can't say if that is why
we had such an easy time going through the process but I think it helped. I researched the whole process like it was a job I wanted more than anything. Alot of people don't realize there are alot of silly things they want. Like using a certain kind of clip to hold all the paperwork
together, and only two holes punched at the top of the papers and divider tabs with tabs at the bottom of the papers. Its alot of work to
find out exactly what they want but I really think thats one thing that helped get ours through so easily.

Middle East and North AfricaAlgeria- you can't choose your baby's name?
My husband knew about the list in Morocco. There was a story a few years ago when alot of women in Islamic countries
began naming their kids with "nonIslamic" names, like American names. Several Islamic countries began refusing to allow
people to pick names that weren't considered Islamic. Other names considered ok are names of The Old Testament Bible like
Sarah or Mary (Meryem). Of course this is only a concern if you choose to live in your SO's home country or try to
register your child in that country.

Middle East and North AfricaI need help!!!!!
When someone draws disability they're not usually allowed to work. I have a friend who gets disability due to being bi-polar. There are
some things she could do but she's not allowed to by the government. She can't hold down a full time job and she couldn't
live on a part time salary, so she gets disability. So I understand where you are coming from. But you must understand, anyone
who signs up as a co-sponser is taking a big risk. Not sure how your health insurance situation is but if you can't add your husband
to your policy then he won't have any health insurance. If God-forbid he got seriously sick and had to go in the hospital and couldn't pay the
bill, your co-sponser would be responsible for it. If he receives government aid then your co-sponser
would have to pay it back. Its a very serious legal obligation. I personally know someone who got to the states, didn't have any insurance yet and ended up with cancer and had to have treatments. This person's spouse didn't require a co-sponser but if they did then
that person would have had to pay those bills. And this responsibility lasts for 10 years or until the sponsered person works for a certain
amount of time, I'm not sure how long but you can look it up. Its very important that the person who agrees to be the co-sponser
understands just exactly what they are getting themselves into.

sorry

Middle East and North AfricaK-1 Pictures
Photos can be of you and his family or your family or friends. They don't have to show you on "dates".
But you must have photos and without them you most likely will have a very difficult time getting a k1 visa I know someone who tried it.
They are not asking you to date just have photos of when you were there proving you actually did meet in person.

Yes she can. We did it. But in order for him to come to the USA she will have to file a k1 and then marry legally here in the usa.

Middle East and North AfricaMENA men say the darndest things....
I am from Georgia and I have such a southern accent and of course I say things a little differently. My husband has picked up some of my southern slang. The first time I heard him say "I reckon" I nearly fell over laughing. He is officially a southerner now using all of the typical southern slang like, yall, over yonder, I'm, fixin, and I reckon. It cracks me up.

Middle East and North AfricaMiddle East Conflicts, Where are we heading ?
I believe these countries who are fighting for their freedom and escape from oppression are dooming themselves.
What they want and what they will get are not the same. They want freedom and democracy (they say) but I believe they
will get the same thing the Iranians got after their revolution.
Worse oppression than they've ever endured before, less freedom than they had before.
Christians in those countries will now be persecuted and killed as is already happening in Egypt.
I don't believe this is the end of the world, but I believe it is the begining of Revelation in the Bible.
Read Revelation and its like listening to the headlines on the news.
There is only One who can save us and his name is Jesus.
We won't escape the tribulation but we can end up in Heaven.
