Middle East and North AfricaHalal Food Poll

When in Morocco, my husband ate halal meat. Since his arrival here in the states, he said he didn't really care. I had searched out and found markets near our home and we do go to them occasionally. We live near Columbus in Ohio and they have markets all over the place. I was surprised at how reasonable the prices are, usually cheaper than the grocery store chains, that includes the vegetables too. I have not found that I can taste any difference.

Carrie, so cool to read you and Simo are going to your parents. Just 5 more days! So excited for you.

Doreen :D

Thanks Doreen, he is scared. I told him that if it were me meeting my family for the first time I'd be scared too!

Where did you order your turkey from? We are going to my parents for Thanksgiving and I need a halal turkey for Simo.

And even if you haven't met the right person, getting married is something you expect to do soon.

Your ideal Valentine's Day date: a romantic picnic in the park

Your flirting style: subtle and calculating

What turns you off: short term flings

Why you're hot: you're a hopeless romantic with each new relationship

Middle East and North AfricaWork auth needed for SSN?

Jamal came thru JFK as I live in NY so he got his temp EAD but I don't think that that had anything to do with getting his SS. They just examined the K-1 visa and issued a SS on this basis only...is it worth to go thru JFK - I don't think so...the stamp is only valid for 3 months and it takes a little longer to get the EAD card. I guess it is a personal choice and as well as how soon will you be filing the AOS...Good luck...

Dorothy

The part that is unclear is whether merely getting the SS card allows them to work. The SS dept answered my question with an email saying yes they can get a SS card on the K1 without the EAD. However, on another forum, someone brought up the point that while the K1 holder can indeed get the card, the employer cannot employ them without the EAD. So those of you who got the SS card without EAD, please speak up, for Gabi's sake.. :D Ok Yeah mine too. :innocent:

You have to decide if him being eligable to work is important or not. Not all local offices will grant the Temp EAD. Simo went thru JFK and we had no problems at all getting his SS card or anythingv else. When he got a job however, they did ask for proof of work authorization on his I-94 in order to fill out the I-9, plus they asked for original documentation of his A (alien) #, which the only place we had it was on the NOA's.

Middle East and North AfricaLets talk about shampoooooooooo...

professional products are higher quality and more concentrated so you shouldn't use as much (ie: dime size instead of quarter size). Is there any way you can learn to love your hair in its natural state... lose the blowdryer or use it only on special occasions and get yourself a nice wide tooth comb for when your hair is wet/damp. A hairbrush is brutal on wet hair, specially if it's curly. Also, invest in a pomade or spray shine for a finishing touch to calm the frizzies and look healthier. And a  for deep conditioning 1-2x/week.
Good luck!

Middle East and North AfricaCosmetics!
Salwa I really think as far as what cleansers and moisturizers to use depends alot on your skin type.

I have very sensative & oily skin and my dermatologist recommended using a mild oil free cleanser by Neutrogena or Cetaphil. I used to use Porefection Cream Clay cleanser by Avon, but they changed it and the new one sucks. I tried the Clay cleanser by Origins and didn't like it. (anyone know of another clay cleanser, plz let me know)

I don't wear anything on my face other than the clarifying powder by Clinique & a Chanel blush/bronzer.

I have used Clinique, Chanel, Lancome, Borghese & Bare Minerals eye shadows & liners.

I'm not really big on mascara. My eyelashes are so long that I don't have the patience for putting it on, I just put kohl and go. When I do, I have used Clinique, Lancome & Borghese mascaras. I've tried the Cover Girl & Maybeline stuff but hate it. It clumps up and dries out too quick for me.

Middle East and North AfricaDirect flights to/from Morocco

The only direct RAM flight is out of JFK.

Carrie is right, but RAM also flys out of Washington, San Francisco and Atlanta (mabe not with a RAM crew but with a partnership airline?) Would be worth talking to the airline you choose about connecting flihts and assistance.

I tried that and the partner in Atlanta is Delta, which will fly you to JFK just to xfer to an RAM flight going directly into Casa. I really don't think there is anyway around it. If I am incorrect for some reason, than I appologize, but I have yet to find any other direct flight other than thru JFK.

But why do people in Morocco have their AR/P done in about a week to two weeks on average from this board anyways and Egypt is on average 4 to 5 months? It makes absolutely no sense to me.

Not everyone in Morocco is done in 1-2 weeks. Ours took 5 months!!!

Middle East and North AfricaThe ME/NA Welcome to America Thread

Does anyone have an idea on how long it takes for biometrics? Said has an appt at 9am an hour away from us on a workday for me. I'm wondering how long I should "book out" from work... I would take the whole day just for fun, but I have some regular clients on that day and kinda need the $$. ;) - I know it varies a bit, but an estimate would be appreciated. Thanks!

I takes about an hour or so +/- depending on how busy it is. The majority of the time is spent waiting, the actual biometrics takes less than 5 mins.

Middle East and North AfricaA Broken Journey

Just a question VJ...since her husband was sent to jail...will he be made to leave the country (fiance asked)????

God, I hope so... but I don't know. If he actually has an AOS interview, the arrest will come up and hopefully AOS will be denied. If there is no interview, I'm not sure how things will work... heLL, I'm not sure of any of it, but I sure as heLL hope he gets sent back to Egypt.

Wouldn't this arrest show up in security checks? One would hope that the gov't wouldn't allow an abuser to stay here.

I would think she can call USCIS and put a hault on the AOS since it has not yet been approved.

Middle East and North AfricaHELP!!! - ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW
Then you are just going through the normal security name check that everyone goes through. These checks can vary from 1 week all the way to a year or more. There is no way to know how long it will take. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do it wait. I know it's not what anyone wants to hear and is easier said than done...trust me I know, we waited 5 months compared to most who wait 1-3 weeks. Good luck and congrats on your success thus far.

Middle East and North AfricaHELP!!! - ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW
Isn't Administrative Review and Administrative Processing two different things? My understanding was that AP was the name checks and AR is when there is a more in depth review- including field interviews, etc.?

Without knowing exactly what was on the paper given, it's hard to give accurate advice.

Middle East and North Africatimeline for arriving in US and marrying

Always be sure to check the actual expiration date on the K1. It is supposed to be 6 months to enter, 90 days to marry as everyone states above, however look at the actual visa.

I remember one member who had theirs printed wrong, and rather than correcting it, they just changed their plans to come earlier.

That would be us. Instead of having the usual 6 months, we got about 7 weeks before the visa expired once they issued it.
