Have you guys tried making an Infopass appointment and getting a stamp in your passport instead? I had to do a lot of travelling and so I got the stamp due to the letter being a bit vague and just not wanting to deal with any hassle.

The officer at my InfoPass reluctantly gave me a stamp... again it was reluctant, but he gave it to me.


That's the plan. I contacted USCIS and they suggested we make an InfoPass appointment for the passport stamp. I also contacted my state representative and received the same response. He also said that he's heard of this several times and that I'd have to go through the governor's office to complain. He's familiar enough with the issue that he knew the exact stamp that we'd need: I-551. We'll update after the appointment and visit to DDS.

I moved to another state while my I-751 case is pending and tried to apply for the state Driver's License and ID but I was denied even after I showed the DMV staff the letter from the USCIS stating that my Permanenet Resident status is automatically extended for 1 year while my case is pending. It is greatly affecting my chances of getting hired for a job since employers are requiring a valid state Driver's License. Can I get any help on this issue? Is there a law prohibiting a Permanent Resident from obtaining a state ID and Driver's License while a case with USCIS is pending? I would greatly appreciate any helpful answer or information to my concern.


This is happening to us in Georgia as well. I haven't tried going to an office yet, but two agents stated the same result on the phone. An up-to-date non-expired Permanent Resident card is required and a Notice of Action (NOA) is not a recognized document in Georgia. Funny how they require my wife to pay taxes as a permanent resident, but let her drive anymore (Valid DL is now expired because they match the PR expiration date).

With the VSC showing a 6 month processing time on I-751, that means she's not allowed to drive for 6 months.

Its probably a bit too late to add myself to this list, but I sent my application on 08-01-2011, received my Notice of Action from VSC on 08-03-2011 and my biometrics letter is dated 08-15-2011 (apt was 09-06). This wait is annoyingly long! Hopefully its coming to an end though.

If it makes you feel any better, my wife had no trouble with traveling to and from Uzbekistan (through JFK) with her letter, expired PR card and passport. Even ran into an issue where her Driver's License was expired, but since the passport was in good standing, all went well. She says that when she came back into the country (in January), they read the letter and said "Welcome back home."

Just talked to USCIS customer service and they said that right now VSC is processing applications received in June 20 2012. And those who filed in August will hear or get notice within 60 days from now. They also told me that there should be no issues if I travel with extension letter and expired green card.

But I still hope and pray I get my GC soon before the trip.

Didn't realize until today (while my wife was traveling through airports) that her Driver's License expired because her PR Card expired. Has anyone run into this before? Will the letter we received cover a driver's license renewal? I would call them but they're closed through the weekend. Just curious what experience everyone else has had with this. Wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the long delay in getting a ROC processed.


Bad news so far - I called the DDS this morning and was told that the NOA was NOT an approved document; that they were aware of the situation with those filing for ROC having to wait an extended period for approval, but that this had nothing to do with Georgia law; that they would NOT issue a license without a valid non-expired Permanent Resident card.

Next step: Go to the DDS office and attempt it there. Hopefully the person I spoke with misunderstood our question.

I remember posting a thread asking about this, to no avail. This happened to me. Did your wife receive a letter in the mail from DMV asking for her SSN? This might be because when she applied for a DL, she presented her SSN card with annotation. It's not something you should worry about. On the letter it says for her to mail back the completed form. However, I wanted to make things faster so I went to a local DMV. The DMV personnel I spoke to told me to "just mail the form back". :blush: I had to insist on talking to a manager for things to get done on the same day. The manager did not have a clue on what to do as well. :bonk: I showed them my ORIGINAL green card extension letter from USCIS, verifying my legal stay here. After a long discussion, the manager photocopied the letter, kept it on file and updated my DMV online information. I paid for renewing my DL and got a temporary DL. A month after, I got the card. Hope this helps.


Thanks for the experienced info. We receved no letter from DDS, which I think is why I was shocked. No warning that it expired (though the expiration is printed on the card, so we should have noticed anyway). She presented a social security card that had no annotation on it. (Side note: I think we've gone through 3 or 4 social security card types since she's been here. Final one looks just like mine (no annotation).) I think we'll have to take a trip to the DDS soon with all documentation in hand. I fear we'll run against opposition. Even if things go well, I do find it annoying that we have to pay for a new license for each "renewal" even though she's in good standing. Citizens get a 6 year license no questions asked. Non-citizens have to pay more because... they're not citizens. Ridiculous.

As long as she has a valid SS she can go and renew her license it has nothin to do with green card


Each state is different. In Georgia, licenses for non-citizens have to match the expiration date of their documentation: "Once immigration documentation is verified with USCIS, a Georgia driver's license or identification card may be issued with an expiration date that matches the immigration documentation expiration date, but no longer than 3 years." - http://dds.ga.gov/dr...741471757&ty=dl

She's had a normal social security card without any limitations printed on it since 2009. She got her license in June. I just assumed it wouldn't expire for 6 years (like mine) but hers actually expired in November (which is when her Permanent Resident card expired).

I am an August filer myself, (my current 2 year green card expires soon, Nov 19, 2011!), filed my I751 as soon as I was eligible.

- I sent my package to the VT Center, their receipt date was 08/24/2011
- My cheque was cashed on 08/26/2011
- Notice date for Biometrics appt 09/07/2011
- Biometrics appt 09/28/2011 10:00am
- waiting..............!

I had mailed in "evidence" of our marriage with the original package, copy of our marriage cert, copy of our home deed showing joint ownership, copy of our joint bank accounts, phone bills, utility bills, insurance policy info, copies of our DL showing our home address.

After reading the forum, it sure sounds like a lot of you had mailed in pictures, I didn't include any!! To be honest, we've been married two years now, we've settled into our married life haven't taken a lot of pictures together (not like before when we were dating). Sad, I know, but most of the pictures on my camera were all of our DOG, since we don't have any kids! I mean, is this weird? Will they deny my application because I didn't send in any pictures??? I'm worried now because I REALLY don't want to have to resend an application and fork over another $590.... ugh!

Is that reasonable??? I mean, all my husband and I do is work all the time, we haven't gotten a chance to go on any vacations, we're total homebodies, when we go out with friends, nobody takes pictures! And we're definitely not the type of people that like to publicize our relationship and post everything on facebook etc, does that make sense??

Am I just dumb for not sending pictures in??? Should I have taken a bunch of pictures the day before sending my package in, just to have in the package???


Maybe some more experienced folks should reply to this too but I really don't think you have anything to worry about. If they do call for an interview (which is rare for I-751), then just be honest, calm and detailed. Pictures aren't required.

Curious - my wife is planning to travel to Uzbekistan soon. We assumed she'd be okay with just the expired GC and the NOA (passport, marriage certificate, etc); however, I see that some folks got their I-551 as well.

Is that something we should do?

How do we get that done?

No one at this point should be worried because the fact that we haven't heard anything is NORMAL. The expected timeline for Vermont is 6.3 months, it's only been 2-3 for us August filers and do you SERIOUSLY expect that USCIS is going to meet that timeline?

The only time you need to start worrying is when everyone else who filed in August has their approval and you don't. Until that point they are obviously not working on the August filers and our cases will be sitting in limbo.


Again - normally - I'd agree with the no reason to worry approach; however, we're in a bad situation I'm afraid. My wife's passport expires in March so she'd have to leave now to get a new passport but by the time it takes to get the new passport (2+ weeks), her Permanent Resident card will be expired so if she left today, she could be stuck in Uzbekistan until I can ship her the new PR card (March/April).

I know the NOA states her status is good for a year during processing and that's helpful/useful for US Immigration and Homeland security but I'm not certain that Uzbek officials will accept it.

We're going to call the Uzbek consulate here and see if they'll do the passport.

Meh... just worried is all.

Can't you go with her on a trip to her country so she can have her passport renewed?



Yeah, granted I could get an approved visitors Visa for Uzbekistan which is hard to come by without an invitation. Wouldn't affect her standing though.

Everybody needs to relax your loved one is already here, just let the application ride it's course.


It's easy to say that and normally I'd be there right with ya'; however, my wife's passport expires in March. Obviously we're not going to see approved cards by March and I'm not sure Uzbekistan will accept an expired Permanent Resident card with NOA as proof of status. So if she goes there to renew her passport, she may be stuck indefinately.

I'm not sure what to do at this point. The Uzbek consolate in DC already stated that they can't provide exit visas (Uzbek thing) so I'm pretty sure they won't be able to do anything about her passport state-side.

Anyone know if her Uzbek passport has to be in good standing to file for citizenship next year?

Unfortunately no. We've contacted them countless times and on one rare occasion that they answered, we were told that it had to be done in Uzbekistan. :(

We're a bit concerned now. We assumed that we'd get an updated Green Card by the end of December at the very latest; however, it looks like it may not be until March before we will find out if it's approved or not.

(VSC March filers are getting theirs now so that comes out to a 7 month delay. Aug + 7 = March!!!)

My wife's Uzbek passport expires in March so she'll need to go back to get a new passport.
However, her Green Card shows to expire next month.
While I know the NOA says the green card is good for up to a year (while in limbo), what I'm afraid of is that if she travels, she'll get stuck in Uzbekistan if they don't accept the NOA as proof.

We don't have the money for her to fly now.

Any thoughts, recommendations?

The good thing about this forum and the tracker is that we can see how everyone else is doing. I haven't received mine yet either and will update as soon as I get it.

If you start seeing 4-5 folks who filed after you did report that they've received theirs, I'd still give it a week before calling.

Haven't receieved my Biometric letter yet. Got my NOA1 on August 24th. Is it too early?

im getting a little anxious that our bio apt letter hasnt come yet. Due to the hurricane or something crazy everyone in my area has been getting the wrong mail, i got letters that were NOT addressed to me or my husband and in fact from states like MO, ####### is that stuff doing in MY mailbox? I just hope that they dont send our bio letter to someone else! What if they arent as curtious as me and they dont put it back in the mail box?! ~*~think positive thoughts*~* :unsure:

Got my biometrics appointment today for 9/8/11. It just has my name on it not my daughter (who will be 14 in November)...does that mean only I am required to attend?


Doesn't look like your daughter is required to go through Biometrics according to USCIS: Biometrics seem to be for those [b]"between the ages of 14 and 79"[/]. I see a few reports on other websites that state that their child below the age of 14 has received a biometrics notice even though it wasn't paid for. Either she'll get a separate notice or may not need it.

That's the truth. We went to hubby's bio appt on Friday, the earlier of the two dates. I'm pretty sure we weren't there more than a half hour. I asked the lady at the front desk if they do walk-ins and she said they do sometimes if there are enough techs. Not worth driving about two hours to find out. Now we just sit and wait for approval or rfe.


My husband just left from his biometrics appointment an hour ago. We got 2 letters too and he went to the latter one. Hopefully we don't get an RFE. :whistle:

Hi everyone,

My wife entered the US 2 years ago on a K1. When we got married, we hyphenated her last name to be her maiden name-my last name. Now that she has been living here for 2 years, we have realized that to change her name in her native country Brazil will be too complicated, and for simplicity she wants her old last name back!

So, with a hyphenated last name on her Green Card and Removal of Conditions coming up in a few months, what do you think about legally changing her name BACK to her original name? Does this look shady? Should we wait until after conditions are removed?
