CanadaCanadian Thanksgiving
We will be arriving home from our delayed honeymoon to FL (leaving Saturday morning for a week) on Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. I'll probably cook a chicken on the Monday with all the trimmings. Same goes for the American Thanksgiving since it is so close to the Christmas turkey. I too cannot go back to Canada for the holidays because we are still waiting for the AOS process :-(

CanadaIs Montreal Consulate closed for Columbus Day observance
Montreal consulate is closed ALL Canadian and US holidays.....While standing in line waiting for the consulate doors to open the day of my interview I had time to read all the signs on the door. That was one of them.

CanadaVisa approved!

Wow!!
Congratulations!!

I have my interview tomorrow morning and I'm super stressed/excited/nervous/can't wait :)

I have a few questions that I would super grateful for:

1. How long did the process last?
2. How early did you get there before your interview?
3. Did you have to submit pay stubs/letter from employer from petitioner with the I-894
4. What did you need to submit as proof of residence?
5. Is the visa actually approved the day of?
6. When will the visa actually be issued?

Thank you so much!!

You do not need the I-864 for K1 visa in Montreal.... You need to do the I-134 ...Tax transcripts, and pay stubs and letter from employer.

CanadaStapling vs. paper clip-interview docs
I used small colored paperclips. I used the white ones for the originals and any other color for copies. Also I bought the clear thin plastic report covers(I think they come in a package of 10) to slip them into before putting them in the accordion style folder. Easy access and no sticking together :-)

CanadaShould I fill out a new DS-156?
You don't need to take more copies to the interview. The ones that you sent in packet 3 will be there. Relax everything is going to be fine. The interview is the easiest part of the whole process :-)

CanadaTransportation Montreal Airport to Downtown
L'aerobus is no longer running. I was going to use that option when I went in April but when I arrived in Montreal I was told the only bus was the 747. I was skeptical of using it because I was new to the city, but was pleasantly surprised as to how easy it was to use.

CanadaTransportation Montreal Airport to Downtown
I also took the 747 express. There was a very helpful lady at the counter that gave me a map and told me what stop to get off. I believe it was $7. correct change is needed so take a handful of twonies and a few loonies. If you do the return trip within 24 hours back to the airport it is free, you just use the same ticket that they give you when you leave the airport. The bus driver will announce the stops, when he announces your stop pull the cord or press the button so he will stop. Very easy to use this bus line. Good luck!

That was quick! I'm so happy for you :-) Mine was there next day at the DHL in Dartmouth/Halifax. So if your local DHL is open Sunday it may be ready for p/u tomorrow.

Don't worry about the number that was on your packet 3 that you sent in. You will receive a new waybill or reference number when your packet is picked up at Montreal by DHL. Some people (including myself) didn't even use DHL to send packet 3 to Montreal. It won't be an issue. Relax and wait for the email or phone call :-)

Montreal is a beautiful city with so much to see. The people at the motel you are staying at will be able to tell you of places close by that you can visit. I also went to Montreal alone, it's pretty easy to get around the city. Are you moving to VA? I'm just outside Richmond VA :-) Moved here from NS in May.

I know I am probably not going to require it but Chad picked up what his parents had last night. He's going to scan me the final decree so at least I have something if they ask. I am so nervous.. I can't believe I am flying out on Wednesday!! 8 nights in Montreal by myself.. ick!

Thanks Inky for backing me up on that. The adoption issue was never brought up throughout the process for me either, but when I was getting ready to interview I couldn't find any for certain information as to whether it was for children or the beneficiary so I took what I had. Funny my papers were from (I hate to say this because it tells my age) 1963. The adoption papers were different back then. But the lawyer fees were what got me....It was a grand total of $67.00, I have the original receipt. Inflation or greed?

At the interview they want the beneficiary information not the USC information.I was never asked about my adoption papers not even questioned anything about anything on that. It was never needed. My mom couldn't find the papers she had for me from 20+ years ago. The adoption papers are only for your children, if you adopted your child and your getting a visa for your child, they are not for the adult.

I was adopted as well. On my checklist that I sent back to Montreal I had an X next to the adoption decree. I had all the paperwork with me but they never asked for it.

CanadaMontreal Interview wait times??????????
After you send packet 3. Call DOS a week or so later to see if it has been logged and packet 4 sent. If it has been logged ask if you are eligible for an interview. You do not have to wait for physical packet 4 to arrive in the mail to book your interview. It can be months away before an interview or it can be a few weeks. Remember when booking that you need to have your medical done before your interview so schedule accordingly. After your interview it usually takes about a week to get your visa back via DHL, unless of course you get placed in AP, then it can be much longer. Once you get your visa back through DHL you can do your POE. If when you schedule your interview and it is months away you can keep checking for new dates to open up, as that happens a lot.
JeannieLFemaleCanada2012-01-02 19:17:00

You need 2 for packet 3 for each person and 3 for the medical for each person....Don't be overwhelmed. Take a deep breath.

CanadaAppointment Letter

I got a packet 4 letter stating i could schedule my interview...is that what they want? and when i scheduled my interview i received an email from the consulate that says Appointment Confirmation and has the details of my interview

Yes that is the one they want. The letter stating that you can schedule your interview. Stick a copy of the email confirmation in your file as well for your records. Before you go to your interview make sure that you have copies of everything. Especially copies of any originals that you need to keep.

Your packet 4 letter is what they want to see in Montreal and also for your medical not the confirmation ....I did get an email confirmation though, did you check your junk mail?

CanadaAOS Interview Question
It will not hurt your AOS either. I was also turned away at the border before we started the K1 process. I was asked in Montreal if I was ever turned away at the border because I did have it on the form when it asked. I answered truthfully that I was but I had been allowed in after that. It was not even mentioned at the AOS interview so don't worry at all about that. They are only wanting to know you have a real marriage now :-)
All the best on your interview.

Canadacan anybody recommend some hotels near consulate?

i was not a fan of LaTour Centerville at all, worth maybe 60 a night, but it wasn't the worst ive stayed at in that province lol

I heard good and bad about it before I stayed there. I had no problems. It's not a 5 star motel by any means but if just looking for a place to lay your head for a night it works.

Canadacan anybody recommend some hotels near consulate?
I stayed at LaTour Centerville. It is right across the street from the consulate. I had a small suite with a kitchenette for less that $100. a night. It was very clean and comfortable. I would stay there again.

CanadaPolice Certificate
I was from Nova Scotia. I went to the local RCMP station and told them I needed a Canada wide police clearance. I filled out the application, also the one for registered sex offender. It was free. I had the results back the very next day and they gave me 2 certified copies.

I looked on the Vachon site and don't see them listed. I wonder if they discontinued them? I am going back to NS in May, there is a distributor there and I will check with them to find out the story. If I can get them I would be happy to send you some.

CanadaNeed help again

Hello again,

I'm filing my AOS now, and I'm coming across a lot of questions where I have to input my name "Family Name" to be specific. I am married now and have a new last name. Do I still input my maiden name since it's on my i-94 and all previous documents filed prior to POE, or do I put my new last name on the documents for AOS, i.e; Biometrics, permanent residence application form etc.

Thanks in advance!

Minu.

I put everything in my married name because that is what I wanted on my green card. When you go to your biometrics appointment you will take your passport and your marriage license to show your name change. Unless you have your drivers license in your married name you can just take that.

CanadaI-134 or 1-864? Need info for packet 3

I did update it. Read the very last post in the thread, it has the new links and direct quotes from the new website.

I didn't mean that your post needed to be updated. I meant the post by Raylse had to be updated because the link in it is the old one.
JeannieLFemaleCanada2012-02-18 13:11:00
CanadaI-134 or 1-864? Need info for packet 3

Do not send Packet 3 until DOS says it has been logged. Despite what a DOS operator may say, you do not have to physically receive packet 3 in the mail before sending it, but it DOES have to be "logged" in the system i.e. Montreal is in the process of sending it out. Montreal is notorious for sending packet 3 and packet 4 very late or never sending them at all, so if you wait to get in the mail it will set you behind. Keep calling DOS a couple times a week or so until they tell you that Pkt 3 has been logged. Same for Packet 4, just call to find out it's been logged and then you can schedule an interview.

Packet 3 is just a letter that directs you to their website to print out the forms and send them back, so it's not any new information.

Please check out this thread for info on K1s: http://www.visajourn...guide-montreal/ The last page has recently updated information on packet 3 and documents to bring to the interview, but some other questions are answered throughout the thread.

That thread needs to be updated. There is a new website for Montreal, the one posted there is the old one that 'cannot be found'. That is why there is so much confusion with things. Montreal now requires the I-864 instead of the I-134 for K1.....They are finally catching up with the rest of the world.

CanadaI-134 or 1-864? Need info for packet 3

This whole I-134 vs I-864 thing is making me nuts.

I found this today on the usvisa-info.com site:

No mention there of the I-864.

I emailed Montreal to ask about this issue earlier this week. I'll post here when I get an answer back.

Look at the checklist on the NEW link for Montreal. It absolutely does mention the I-864 as one of the required documents. It's not listed in the forms needed with packet 3 because it does NOT get sent with packet 3 it goes with you to the interview along with the other things on the checklist.
JeannieLFemaleCanada2012-02-17 16:10:00
CanadaI-134 or 1-864? Need info for packet 3

Okay...this is totally confusing!!!!

The original montreal website listed in the first post does not work.

And, there is no evidence on the site posted above, that states either form 1-134 OR I-864 are needed in packet 3.

And furthermore I am so confused about wording.

In an older Day of Interview Checklist I had printed out from Dec/11 it lists Affidavit of Support (I-134) and Evidence of Support (I-864) are needed for the interview.

Today, I found on another Montreal website (http://montreal.usco...-checklist.html) only Evidence of Support (I-864) is needed along with photocopy of the IRS transcripts or photocopy of the most recent tax return are needed.

But when I research form I-864 it is called 'Affidavit of Support' not 'Evidence of Support' as listed in the checklist. When researching this form it indicates this form is used for adjustment of status purposes.

I find I am getting so confused with terms and titles of documents/forms being referenced 'loosely' and procedures changing. I am not sure what to get prepared.

Advice appreciated!!

The website you found today is the one that I posted the other day in a reply, which is the NEW website for Montreal. The evidence is there, if you click on the checklist on that page it shows the I-864 is required. They now require the I-864 for K1. Up until they changed the website they were still one of the consulates using the I-134, I guess they decided to catch up the times and go with the I-864 too. If you research the I-864 on VJ you are going to see it used for AOS, because it is used for that also. Prepare and take the I-864 to your K1 interview, as that is what they require now.

CanadaI-134 or 1-864? Need info for packet 3

AP is advanced parole EAD is the employment authorization. This are filed for after marriage when you file for AOS - don't even worry about thos things right now.

Bio page of the passport is the page with your picture and information on it.

Men do not need a marriage certificate, only the divorce one - if it was a woman you need the marriage and divorce certificates to show the name changes.

in 2009 Montreal asked for both mine and his ( birth cert ) at the interview but returned both originals and kept copys. ( Always ask for originals back and leave them with copys )

Montreal lumps K-1 information with spousal information. Unless they changed the requirements within the last few days to require the 864 - they should only be needing the I-134 for the K-1.

There is a new link for packet 3 at Montreal. They no longer require the I-134 for K1 visa. It is the I-864 now. Here is the link for you to have a look at.

Super thanks!

Good idea to wait on those photos for the AOS as those I have now could be outdated.

Ps can you staple things or do they prefer paper clips?

Never use staples in this process ...Paperclips it is :-) Get some colored ones at the dollar store, so when you are getting your documents ready for your interview you will have them. I put white paperclips on all the originals and colored on the copies.

Canadapassport photos & do you attach any to forms in packet 3?
Put 2 passport photos in a plastic bag and paper clip them to the DS 156. You will need 3 passport photos for your medical in Toronto. It wouldn't hurt to take 2 extras to the interview just in case Montreal loses the ones you sent. They have been known to lose things. Make sure you make copies of everything. You don't need passport photos for your POE. You will need 6 photos for your AOS when it comes time for that but best to wait until you are ready to send that to have new photos taken.
