ThailandThe Sin Sot Issue
I can relate…

My wife's family expects one. We've had many discussions about this issue and it's still unresolved.

I have a coworker who married a Thai lady and they both advised me that I shouldn't be expected to pay a sin sod for many reason...

ThailandAirplane Rides from Asia

Delta code shares with Korean so if you know the KAL flight times you can book through Delta and fly Korean.

Emirates airline if you don't mind subjecting her to a crazy long layover.  I would personally pay the extra 200 and fly her on Korean Air so she gets here as quickly as possible and has a very good flight experience to boot.

ThailandHow long after the Consulate receives the Packet 3 should we expect to hear about our interview date?

I don't know if this is accurate but a while back, I was looking over various timelines and it appeared to take about 4-5 weeks for an interview appointment once packet 3 was recieved.  I wouldn't know if the timelines I viewed were typical or atypical.

I got interview date a day after they received my packet.

How long after that was your appointment - maybe about 4 weeks?

It's not too bad - she'll submit basically the same information that I did for the I-130 and I'll submit proof of support plus get fleeced again.

Your case is totally different.  You are IR-1/CR-1.  You have all kinds of paperwork to send NVC etc. that K visas don't have to do after NOA2.  I hope you've been researching that because it's kinda up to you how fast you get through NVC.  Can be a couple weeks, can be 3 months.

I have and I think we have everything together to send as soon as it's needed.  Plus, I expect to follow the shortcut guide here to try and shave off a couple of more weeks.

60-70 days from NOA2 isn't bad....  I was expecting closer to 90.

ThailandHow much should we expect to pay for medical and police cert?

I read that the police cert is 150 baht plus 50 baht to mail but my wife thinks it's more like 1000/200.  As far as medical goes, she thinks it might be about 5000 and I have no idea.

ThailandRFE for kids

The RFE is for the original birth certificate with translations.  I sent those with the I-130 packet and they were translated so I'm not sure what the trouble really is...  I'll have to have my wife send originals from Thailand again - all I have here now are copies.

I spoke with my wife and she says she has an official letter from a Thai court officer stating that she's the only legal parent of her children.

Yes, Thanks for stopping by...  I'm sure we'll need to know quite a bit before the interviews if we want approvals all around.

ThailandRFE for kids

There's no father listed on the birth certificates - wouldn't that help?

ThailandRFE for kids

We're bringing her kids (my step kids) too.  I sent as one packet but with separate I-130s.  Everything has been smooth until today.  The kids all got an RFI today after my wife's I-130 was approved.  Our Thai friends here said that's common and probably has to do with the bio father but to wait and see.  I expect the RFI letters by Tuesday at the latest and then I'll know.  One thing, there is no father listed on the official birth certificates and my wife doesn't want to even attempt to find the father unless there's absolutely no other choice.

ThailandHouse registration - required for K-1 interview or not?

When we were married, we used a translations business directly across the street from the embassy on the 2nd floor.  I don't recall the name but my wife thought they were reasonable and quick.

ThailandChanging Surname on Thai Passport
Mine went and changed her name on her own about two weeks after we filed the marriage papers in Bangkok. She assures me it will be a non-issue and she's in the government so I tend to believe her.

ThailandWe Have Lift-Off

Grand Prairie is the next city over from me - It's maybe a 20 minute drive to the furthest part of that city from our home.

Mine has told me she wants me to help her get a garden started, but otherwise, she'll take care of the house.  I don't know anything about gardens so I guess I'll be learning soon.

Our case has been at the NVC a month plus a couple of days and still no case number.  I hope we will get it in the next few days.

Good idea - Maybe try to turn on subtitles for the Food Network and create a gourmet chef while she learns English better.

How do you do the section 8 thing?  I live in Texas.  Not sure if they have that here?

I'm in Arlington and they have it in Texas...  The counties each have an office that manages section 8.  Basically, they'll inspect your home and if it qualifies, they'll keep it occupied and pay you.  They also attend to the general upkeep.

I've considered buying house just for that reason.  We live in an apartment now and she's always trying to grow stuff on the patio with mixed results. I don't really want invest in a house at this point because I want to go back to Thailand permanently in ~5 years.  I just tell her to stick it out for now.

I don't know if you've considered how low the interest rates are but right now you can start building equity in about 3 years with a 15 year mortgage.  Plus, the 15 year mortgage payments workout to be very close to the same payments as the 30 year mortgage payments.

You could also section 8 your home when you were ready to go to Thailand and let the county handle keeping it occupied.  That would cover your payments and bring in a little cash too.  Unless something changes, we'll section 8 ours when we move back and use the monthly check as an income supplement.
