My wife passed her test today! :dance: Thanks Be to God! Now we wait for a slot in federal district court for an oath (she is changing her name). They only do it once a month, so if we don't get into the February ceremony (officer was not promising anything) we have to wait until mid-March. Thanks to VJ for the fantastic amount of help! We were way overprepared; they didn't ask for anything other than what we had already sent in.

Questions were (1) first 10 amendments; (2) who is Speaker of House; (3) Longest River; (4) Who is the President now; (5) When was the Declaration of Independence adopted; (6) Who lived in North America before the colonists came; (7) When do we celebrate Independence Day. She had to write something like "Independence Day is in July".

We're doing a name change, so I believe we will have to wait for an oath appointment at the district court.

Thanks Arlington!! Lets recap my day...

My appt was for 8:40am. There was new construction going on and I missed my turn! It was 8:15am. I finally was able to make a UTurn found parking and started running like a maniac. Huge line outside, it was blasted cold. The time was now 8:30am. After waiting to get in the door and pass security it was now 8:50!!!! I went to the 2nd level and waited. I was called in around 9:50. My officer was really nice too.

She went over my package, didnt ask me to read or write. She wanted to look at my gc and id. She asked me my civics questions..
#1. What is one right of united states citizens
#2. Who is the chief of the supreme court
#3. Name two national holidays
#4. How many senators are there
#5. Where is the statue of liberty
#6. What state borders Mexico

Thats it!! That simple!!! Gave me a letter that I was approved!!! Then she went to enter something in the computer and the computer froze!!!! She looked puzzled and said brb.

5 minutes later, she asked me to comeback @ 1pm for my oath ceremony. She said it will be extra special today since we will be celebrating MLK bday.

Cameback, no line - Thank u lord!! Waited for them to call my name to give up my gc and sign a copy of my certificate. She gave me a white package and wait togo upstairs.

Went upstairs and sat in my assigned seat. It was a beautiful ceremony! I was in tears. There were several camera men from several news channels there as well. Special guest was the director of homeland security who gave a speech and stayed for pics.

That was my day guys. Woke up @ 5 to beat traffic and was still late. lol.. Left @ 2:45pm and it was ALL worth it! I am finally a USC.

On your entry, you put that your district office is in Connecticut. If you live in CT, then you should contact Sen. Blumenthal. He not only is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, but is also on the Immigration subcommittee of that Committee. He will have at least one immigration specialist on his staff, and USCIS will pay attention to his staff because he is on the subcommittee that is responsible for their oversight. The USCIS website just posted another update to the processing times for the DC office. It says that as of the end of Sept., they were processing applications from March 16, 2011. That is an improvement from the February 9, 2011 date from the previous month.

One of the May filers from DC region just got some movement (see their thread). So, by that metric, we may get our letters around New Year's (for interview in early Feb?). I was also despairing (there were no DC people in the April filers thread, so it was hard to get a sense of how far behind the DC office was getting).

I can't believe Washington DC is still going through February applications... waiting sucks

I hear ya. Unfortunately, there are DC people from the May and June groups that are still waiting for their interview letters. There are three DC people in the May group and two in the June group. None of them have gotten their interview letters yet. The USCIS website says that, as of the end of August, the DC office was processing February 2011 applications.

Grr I'm still waiting for my interview letter .... Been in line since August 1st

I've been watching other DC applicants on VJ from past months and, unfortunately, we are in the slowest district in the country. All three DC filers in the May 2011 group are still waiting for their interview letter. :blink: Based on February and March groups' timelines, I see that for DC, it takes about 3 months between biometrics and receiving the letter with your appointment date. My wife also heard similar timelines from her classmates at her citizenship preparation class. We're expecting an interview sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

My application was placed in line for an interview on 08/01.. Still waiting for my interview letter :(

Hi Everybody,

The first page of N400 Application, Part2- A- I have been a lawful permanent resident of the United States for at least five years.

if I check the box that I have been in the U.S at least 5 years and I send the application before 5 years (4 years and 9 months) is this legal or it's a lie because they will have my signature in the last page with the date, and they can check that I have been in the U.S 4 years and 9 months and not 5 years!

many people they told me you can send before 5 years, can anyone explain please and thanks!

We received the NOA in the mail today! The priority date is July 11th :)

It states "Upon receipt of required record checks you will be scheduled to appear for an interview". Is that a normal statement? Just *hoping* since fingerprints were done less than a year ago for ROC that maybe we wont have to do them again like some other people :)

Hello everyone,

I have read lots of posts on here about people who have phoned the USCIS attempting to (speak to a real person) and/or submit a service request. Moreoften than not they are unable to process this request if you are still within the standard processing times.

Today I found a discrete link on the USCIS webpage allowing users to submit this request themselves online.

For the situation that we were in, it only worked after we were out of the normal processing times. We watched the processing times for our local office but it was only after that date passed our NOA date that we were able to submit an e-request. Our NOA priority date was July 12, 2011, but we did not go past normal processing times until May 17, 2012 that we could submit (more than 10 months later!). The good part about the e-request is that it goes directly to the proper field office. They emailed an answer directly to us, which basically said: wait longer. It's not like it worked miracles, but it did give us a little information that we didn't have previously. After that, we used our senator's office.

Since you have time, you might also try to gain a wider understanding outside the 100 questions. I know its not possible for everyone due to geography, but I took my wife to as many of the historical sites involved in the 100 questions that I could. We visited the Statue of Liberty, the World Trade Center site, Independence Hall and the Declaration House in Philadelphia, Mount Vernon (GW's home), the National Archives (where the Declaration and Constitution are on display), the Capitol, the Supreme Court, the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Monticello (TJ's home), Jefferson Memorial, Univ. of Virginia campus (designed by TJ), Ft. McHenry (about which Star Spangled Banner was written), MLK Jr. Memorial, and various Civil War battlegrounds. I'm sure there were others. We also rented many documentaries and movies on DVD from our local library; some were dull, others much better. My wife's favorite was the recent John Adams series (it has a well developed female character in Abigail Adams). My wife is a visual learner, so that type of experience really helped her.

We left ours at home (actually at someone else's home that I don't recall). The birth certificate is sufficient. Those waiting next to me in the waiting room were appreciative (in the abstract) that I did not have our 1-year old with me. Also, my wife's head was much clearer for not having to worry about whether we had enough milk and/or diapers. My wife was asked no questions about children.

Thanks Arlington...actually and specifically, it'll be at the Women in Military Service in America Memorial at the Arlington Cemetery. I'm excited and I don't know what to expect. I tried looking up past ceremonies at the Arlington Cemetery and I couldn't find any info on this venue other than they held the first 1 here (Arlington Cemetery) in 2008 and it was described as "historic".

I also was thinking it'll be a tie in with Veteran's Day.


Interesting . . . I didn't think there was much room inside that part (as I recall, it is just a long hallway). Maybe it is going to be outside?

Just to update the thread...

I got my N-445 Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony in the mail today (10/23/12).

Just to recap, I had my USC interview at Fairfax on 09/27/12.

My Oath ceremony is to be on 11/14/12 at Arlington National Cemetery.

Bummed I didn't get a same day ceremony but I'm excited to have my ceremony done at Arlington Cemetery.


Congratulations! Sounds like a Veteran's Day tie-in. Probably will be at Memorial Amphitheater. What a treat!

So all her documentation since marriage, including all USCIS applications, has used the name "Alpha Bravo Delta". Her Green Card was issued with "Alpha Bravo Delta" shown. This seemed perfectly normal to me and we did this all along so that my wife would have the traditional three names most people have in the USA. According to this USCIS supervisor, the USA will only recognize my wife as "Alpha Delta" with no legal middle name.


I find this rather bizarre! First, I'm not sure how your wife got her green card in her married name. My understanding was that all the applications and the green card would be under the same name that is on her foreign passport. Did she change her name on the foreign passport? (As I've discussed before in other postings, such a name change is extraordinarily hard to do in my wife's home country--one is always named the same as on one's birth certificate.) At U.S. border inspection stations, I have observed that they check both the foreign passport and the green card and I was under the impression that the names should match. Second, the supervisor made what I hope is an incorrect statement. We also asked for "Alpha Bravo Delta" with "Bravo" (her current last name) as middle name. No questions at all were raised. We will see on Thursday whether and how our request was fulfilled, but I fully anticipate that it will. If the Secretary of State can have it that way, why can't my wife?

I did try to schedule an infopass appointment but cancelled it a day before because my husband emailed the senator's office & got a response. Jut today I got the notice for my oath taking ceremony. Looks like the senator's office called USCIS on the same day because my notice was dated the day after. Thanks everyone for the insights, to those that are still waiting for oath - the email/call to the senator's office seem to help a lot.

It has been so frustrating for me to wait for this oath taking in Fairfax office. I had my interview in June 8 & it's been 90 days since I came out of that office with the white paper telling me that I passed & my application was recommended for approval. I called the USCIS today- the 90th day since my interview to follow up the my case status since the online case status will still show me the Interview and Testing. I was told by the CS that Fairfax office is still working on November 2011 filers - that just confused me because my friend had her interview in May and took oath in August. I had a name change, is it the one that's holding my application?


Based on emails from Washington Field Office, correspondence with our senator's office, and our successful InfoPass appointment, I believe the problem is that they have to run a "name check" on the new name (they don't do that until you pass your interview). That takes a long time (maybe 3 months). Then, you go into the que for the courthouse. That took us another 3 months. They told us that they can only take 75-100 people per month at the courthouse. I know that they did schedule at least one extra session on 9/27 (perhaps related to the end of the fiscal year; perhaps related to the voter registration deadline), which we were lucky enough to be assigned to. Call your representatives/senators. That's the only way that they are aware of the problem.
