CanadaPotential joint sponser issues

Anyway, I'll have another talk with her tonight. I'll see what comes up. She's probably resist the idea again, but it never hurts to try once more. ;)

Good luck talking with her. Perhaps you should try focusing on some of the positives of becoming a US citizen that Flames9 mentioned. I know that the only reason Derek is thinking about it is because he makes considerably less as a PR than he would as a citizen. He's in law enforcement/security and a lot of the top paying jobs in DC are government related so he can't even apply. And I believe Scott is also right about inheritance rights were you to predeceace her. Hopefully that is waaaaaay in the future, but always better to plan ahead and be safe rather than sorry.

By the way, I personally think the US government will have *less* control over her as a citizen than a PR. I am thinking deportation primarily. Though I can understand her reluctance to swear an oath that she is not 100% behind.

Best of luck with whatever decision you all come to!

CanadaMy Interview at Montreal on Friday, Apr 13th

I think the people upstairs are foreign workers. For sure the CO is American. I'd think that the security guards are locals???? I mean, it'll be messed up if the security guards are from the US????

Well, if the US Consulate in Montreal is anything like the Canadian Embassy in DC, there could be a few layers of security with locals, military and civil servants all mixed in. Unfortunately there are rude people in every job. The ones that work with the public just stick out more.

CanadaCanada funds check in the US

Once upon a time I received a check from Germany, and I, too, was with a Credit Union. It was going to cost more in fees to cash it than the check was written for. Big bank or possibly a money exchange would be your best bet.

Actually Wachovia tried to ding us $75 per check to cash some Canadian checks. And I know Flames9 has had the same experience. So shop around the big banks too.

CanadaFiling Deadline
Thanks for the replies, guys!

Yup, Quebec is the only province that makes people file a separate return, grrrr. Quebec has been a thorn in my side on numberous occasions though - don't even get me started on SAAQ - so I guess I should not be surprised by anything that they do anymore.

Anyway, I finally found on the Revenu Quebec website the following:

Filing deadlines
The deadline for sending your personal income tax return to Revenu Québec is April 30 of each year.

Some differences apply if you are self-employed and you report business income.

If you file your return late, you are liable to a 5% penalty on the balance not paid by April 30. You are liable to an additional 1% penalty for every complete month your return is late (maximum of 12 months).

If you have a balance owing on April 30, interest will be calculated on this balance as of May 1.

So if the last sentence is to be believed, it sounds like they really do want $$$ in hand by the end of April 30. Not just an envelope postmarked the 30th which arrives a few days later.

Am still hoping Derek does not owe any provincial - or federal for that matter - tax. But just in case there are any other Quebecers (sp?) out there thinking they can mail their taxes out on the 30th, a fair warning that you may get dinged like we did last year.

You think we would have learned our lesson last time, lol.

CanadaFiling Deadline
Does anyone know when the filing deadline is to mail tax returns to Canada and Quebec?

Our accountant is busy completing Derek's Canadian taxes and says that we have until midnight on April 30th to file both for Canada and Quebec. I have checked websites and that seems to be correct for Canada. But last year Quebec dinged us a late fee because while we mailed them a few days before the due date, they obviously arrived a few days after. I would not be surprised if Quebec was different (read difficult) and did not allow people to have until midnight on April 30th to file, but does anyone know for sure? I doubt that we'd be able to get them there ontime if we mailed them this late, but I figure we could still do the online thing.

Of course I am really hoping that Derek won't owe anything and therefore this whole issue will be moot.

CanadaMontreal's attitude after THEY made a mistake

Losing your temper at us or them is not going to bring this to a solution any faster, in fact, I guarantee you that it's going to hinder it..

I can feel how frustrated you and your wife are, and I am sure I would be as pissed off as you guys if the same thing had happened to Derek, but Zyggy's advice is sound. Sometimes it's best to swallow your anger (and pride) and keep your cool. Since the aggressor is expecting you to lash back at them, a calm front will catch them off guard and often you can diffuse a bad situation before it escalates.

At the very least, this woman sounds like an ###, but she an ### holding all of the cards right now. So consider yourself caught in a trap, which in essence you are. The more you thrash, the worse it gets. But if you keep still and calm, (with the assistance of your lawyer and senator) the more likely you are to find a way out. Good luck!

CanadaJust curious
Derek had already lived and worked in Virginia before we met and really liked it, so we always knew he would be coming down here. He is in law enforcement/forensics and had a bit of difficulty finding a job because most security postions in DC require US citizenship. Well, the ones that pay more than $11 and hour anyway! But in a lovely twist of fate, a job came open in the Canadian Embassy and he has been there since August.

Cassie and Kathryn, we must be triplets because I have my MA in Museum Studies (From George Washington University - Go Colonials!) and have worked at various historic sites and houses for the past 10 years. So DC is a great place for me to be right now. Plus, my French is just horrendous so I don't know how employable I would be in Montreal, where Derek's family lives. But there has been some talk of Derek getting a promotion and being relocated to Ottawa which would be fine with me. Or we are also considering moving up to Burlington, Vermont so we can be closer to both our families.

Ultimately, though, I wouldn't mind both of us becoming dual citizens so we tell can immigration to stuff it!

CanadaSS card question
I am pretty sure that's what Derek did. He lived in Montreal only a few hours from the border, so as I recall he just took a day off to run down to the nearest Vermont town (can't remember which one), applied for his SS card and it arrived at our US address a few weeks later. Derek had already activated his visa though and may have even already received his GC. So while it should be possible for your wife, you may just want to call the closest office to her just to check what they will need for ID.

BTW, Derek also checked the box on the form, but like Flames it never arrived. Actually, has anyone ever had the SS card arrive without having to go to an office?

Not a big Ducks fan since they stole the Islanders old farm team's name. Not a big Ottawa fan either, but was disappointed that they didn't at least put up much of a fight. And, yeah, Scott, soring on themselves certainly didn't help!

Well, as a horse racing fan as well as a hockey fan, I am a bit torn here. Comparatively speaking, there is almost no horse racing on TV as opposed to hockey, so I am always eager to watch the ponies run when I get the chance. But, yeah to interrupt an OT game just to go to the pre-race blah, blah, blah seems silly to me too. Out of curiosity, did the game end before the race began?

NBC can't win though. A few weeks ago they preempted a special on Barbaro because the Buffalo/Rangers game went into OT and they stayed with the game. And of course all of the horse racing people bitched and moaned about who cares about hockey, they wanted to watch Barbaro. Didn't matter to me since NBC ended up airing the Barbaro special after the Kentucky Derby, which is when they should have aired it anyway.

By the way, the Preakness was pretty awesome this year!

And yeah, Go Sens, Go!

Sabres 3 Isles 2. Not completely surprising, but argh.

Last night one of the commentators said that Islanders management was so convinced they would not make the playoffs, they actually removed the ice at the Nassau Coliseum after the last home game. So now they are worried about the condition of the ice. Man, if your own management doesn't even believe in you, #######?!

Talking to my parents, the Flames were lucky to have only lost by 3 goals!! Were totally outplayed!! Oh well, it is only 1 game!! Last night on center ice online I was able to watch 3 out of games BUT of course the only game I did want to see (flames, duh) was not an option, lol

Yeah, the few minutes I saw of the game were not the Flames' best. But as you say, it's only the first game. Am thinking positive thoughts for the Islanders next game too.

If you need to, you guys can always come visit friends at the BH for the next Flames game. *wink*

As for curling, it's always intrigued me. What can be better than shuffleboard on ice?! And there is a league somewhere in the DC metro area. I just need to get more motivated and find out more.

As much as I want to see my Flames win, I just want to see entertaining hockey!!!! I went to the Capitals last home season game this past saturday, was soo pathetic I left before the 2nd period ended!!!

Ha! After years of going only to Caps games, Derek and I finally got a chance to go back home a few weeks ago and see the Islanders play Montreal at the Nassau Coliseum. Holy #######, it was rocking! I forgot what real fans - and hockey - are like! Lots of Habs fans there as well, and the funniest chant (from a VJ perspective) I heard was, "Where are your green cards?" Best of all (besides the Isles winning of course), was that Bobby Nystrom was sitting literally 3 rows in front of me and signed the back of my sweater. Not going to wash that any time soon, lol.

By the way, Scott, lookes like your Flames are on Versus tonight. That's channel 64, at least at the Barton House.
