Trust me, y'all have accents! wink.gif

And Derek got like 4 welcome letters too. At first I was excited thinking his green card had come really early. By the 4th one, I was like typical $%&* government wasting the taxpayer's $$$.

Anyway, congrats Colin!

Well as a rough guesstimate - based on the info I could find "In 2006, 1,266,264 people were granted legal permanent resident status" and based on .41 cents for a letter to be sent - the postage alone for 1 additional welcome for each is about 1/2 a million.

Well, they probably get a bulk mail government rate, but still. Yikes!

CanadaRogers to Verizon cell phone Q
Geeze, $400?! Outrageous. mad.gif $200 is disgusting too. But that's about what it is down here to cancel your contract too. I hate cell phone companies! ranting33va.gif

Anyway, as for Verizon vs. ATT, I had ATT back before Cingular, then stayed on for the merger. Never really had any problems with either of them, but I was frustrated that after the merger I couldn't make any changes to my contract without having to lose the great deal I originally had with ATT ($55 for 1200 minutes and free calling to Canada). I started looking around and found out that I get a better deal with Verizon through my employer, so I switched over. Haven't had any issues with Verizon and best of all they are the only company to provide service in the Metro. In anycase, I think which provider is best for you really depends on what area you are in.

But I still miss my North America calling plan. cray5ol.gif

Our mornings are free! meg isn't a morning person!! lol I'm hoping their is a Dunkin or starbucks close by! lol Wil definetly require a lot of coffee to stay awake and watch the Islanders!! :-)

You are really asking for it my friend! But I will be nice and give you directions that won't land you in the hood, however tempted I may be. devil.gif

After a quick glance at the LIRR schedule, it looks like your best bet is to take the train to the Westbury station since it looks like you won't have to change at Jamaica that way. Jamaica can be a pain if you not familiar with it. Westbury is only a couple of miles from the Coliseum, so it shouldn't take more than 15 or so minutes to get there. But I am not sure what the taxi service would be like on a Saturday night, so you may want to call ahead to make sure someone will be there and maybe even arrange the return trip from the Coliseum. Anyway, again according to the website, it's Stuart's Taxi, 516-333-1111.

You may be cutting it a bit close - train from Penn to Westbury is about 45minutes or so - but you should be able to get there by face-off. Keep in mind that coming home, trains are running Off Peak and while they do run all night (unlike Metro!), it may be almost an hour between trains.

Have a great time!

Yes bring your own skates, me and my fiance went skating at Rockefeller a few years back, and we rented the skates...plastic skates...super uncomfortable...I spent most of my time standing in one spot because they made my feet hurt so much. sad.gif

Is it a decent rink? I think the fee is $18 a person, lol

It's a pretty decent rink, although anytime around Christmas is likely to be crowded. But, hey, it's one of those once in a lifetime been there done that moments. Take photos!

And definitely bring your own skates. Derek and I went skating here in Northern VA once before he moved down here and he blamed his falls on the @#%#$ rented skates. laughing.gif

Anyway, no, there is no "metro" that goes from NYC to Long Island. You have been living in DC too long. laughing.gif It's called the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). And no, it doesn't go to the Coliseum in Uniondale where the Islanders play. So you will have to take a bus or taxi from train station. There are a couple of nearby stations to choose from so here are the public transportation link from the Coliseum website as well as the LIRR website:

I suspect your soiree in NY will probably be even more interesting than a consulate review. We shall await your return, story (with pics would be great)!

Errr, yes. Especially if you take the bus through Hempstead. Probably should warn you that when I lived on the Island, Hempstead was pretty rough. Think SE DC. Well, maybe with less guns. laughing.gif I can check with some friends who still live in Garden City, but if I were you I would probably try and take a taxi.

And Liz, your images have been cracking me up!

So were off to New York for a weekend in Dec. Already lined up to see the Lion King and the Phantom of the Opera. Looking to see a hockey game as well. Rangers are not playing, leaves me with the Lowly Islanders playing. BUT they are playing Pittsburgh, so all is not lost! So I'm looking to see if I can catch the metro train to the rink from the Times square area where our hotel will be (anyone know if we can????) At the bottom of the New York transmit page is translations for various countries!! Low and behold is CANADA!! So i click on it, and after 20 secs up pops the new page in FRENCH!! lol Whats with that? lol

Now you KNOW I just can't let that pass! ranting33va.gif I will admit that the Coliseum sucks, but the crowd should be pretty good to see Crosby play. Derek and I went to a Montreal/Isles games last February (Isles won, thank you very much) and the crowd kept shouting "Where are your green cards?" And a few other obscenities that VJ won't let me type. whistling.gif But it was a good game, especially since I have gone to only Caps games for the past 10 years and had gotten accustomed to the tame crowd at the Verizon Center. What do they think they are watching, golf?!

CanadaGetting my U.S. driver's back
Yeah, it seems to be state dependant since Derek just had to take an eye test. Which he almost failed because he was too vain to put on his glasses. laughing.gif

Course since he is on a CR1 his VA license expires the same time his conditional green card does. Which means that he will have to get it renewed in December. And since he probably won't have his green card by then, they will probably only renew it for a year, which means he will have to go back to the DMV next December too, grrrr.

CanadaTransferring Canadian funds to an American account
Derek still has a car loan back in Canada so we have to transfer $$$ up there every month for the payment. I have found the best (and free!) method for us to be Custom House. http://www.customhouse.com/ Takes a few days to set up, but is completely free, no fees, and offers a decent exchange rate. And let me tell you the rate is killing me right now! laughing.gif

CanadaSo Canadians - tell us about yourselves
Well, the name's easy - he's Derek (the Canadian) and I am KJ (USC) and we met at the museum I work at. He used to travel quite frequently in the US on business (I think one year he was home a total of about 20 days) and did some work with the museum several years before I even started there. Anyway, after his job was completed, Derek stayed friends with my boss and a couple other guys here. We met a few weeks after I started and he says that he liked me the moment he saw me, but refused to ask me out because I was dating someone else at the time. Guess he was trying to be a gentleman. laughing.gif So we were friends first, occassionally calling/emailing/hanging out when he was in town, etc. for about a year or so.

When I finally dumped the loser, Derek waited about a nano-second to ask me out. We dated for about 9 months flying back and forth about once a month or so from DC to Burlington, VT (about a 2 hour drive from Derek's home in Montreal - thank God for the now defunct Independence Air!) We were engaged for about 3 months and did a quicky wedding to get the whole immigration process started. Took longer than expected (just about 300 days) but he finally moved down to the US on April 2006 and the rest as they say is history. We are currently preparing the 751 to get him his 10 year green card and then I hope not to have to deal with the INS again until 2017 or so!

And, sorry Scott, the Islanders are the best team and I still miss Denis Potvin. crying.gif

CanadaU Haul
Derek had heard some horror stories about Uhaul in Canada as well, but didn't have any problems with his truck driving from Montreal to Virginia. I think it cost about $400. On the other hand, the Uhaul I used for a local move in Arlington, VA was absolute #######. There were a more than a few moments where I was convinced the truck was not going to make it another foot. Fortunately we got it back before it died completely. So I would guess the quality of their trucks really depends on the operator that you rent from in either the US or Canada.

CanadaDo most USC attend Consulate interviews with their fiances/spouses?
I did not go to Derek's interview. Mostly a financial decision, but Montreal is his hometown so I knew there would be plenty of people around to support him if necessary.

And now that he is here, he has to face the Ultimate American everyday - me! devil.gif

CanadaPrice comparisons...
I am so not a girly girl either and was really surprised at how much I enjoyed wearing my weddding dress! laughing.gif I figured it would be one of the last times that I am in a real dress anyway, so why not make the most of it!

As for veils, I got mine from veilshop.com. Wasn't expensive - I think around $50 or less? - and best of all they send free samples so you can match it to your dress.

Our photographer was about $600-$700. We decided that to keep costs low that we didn't really need him for the entire reception (which would have cost over $1000) so we had him do the getting ready shots, the ceremony, the bridal party, and the first dance. Then for the reception itself we had the disposable cameras on the tables. Worked well for us.

Whatever you decide, good luck and have fun!

When it comes to "drugging" ur cat or any kind of drugs to any type of animal/person, one will get different answers! I believe many state when flying with ur animal its best not to drug them??? Before my vet prescribed the drugs, she did a physical of the cat to ensure everything was fine

Yeah, you probably will get different answers. Jenny was on kitty downers for her plane ride from Vermont to DC, but she was in the cabin with me and I was able to keep tabs on her. Cats who are sedated are not able to regulate their temperatures and breathing as well as cats who are not sedated especially at higher altitudes. Jenny apparently wasn't very well sedated though. We were on one of those turbo prop planes and while the engines were running I didn't hear a thing, but as soon as we landed and the engines shut down all you could hear was "meow", "meow", "meow", non-stop. I was a bit embarrassed. blush.gif

I had a cat who loved to take cars rides because he had been doing it since he was a kitten and had gotten used to it. So I am trying to take Calvin on rides that don't end up at the vet whenever I get the chance. Ask me how it's going in another 6 months. laughing.gif
