PhilippinesWhat to bring to St Lukes?
Hello there!

This is my first post here, but I have been lurking and reading on this site for a while. biggrin.gif

We are very excited. We just found out that Glyn's visa interview is May 15. She is going to to St. Luke's to get her medical exam next week.

The embassy website says that she should bring her passport and a 2x2 photo of herself (http://manila.usemba...ov/wwwfk1en.pdf)

She thinks that she needs to bring everything else to St. Luke's that she would bring to the visa interview. She said she read this somewhere.

Can anyone verify what is needed?

Thank you for your help!

PhilippinesCENOMAR needed for visa interview?
Thanks so much for all of this advice and experience. We went to ecensus.com.ph and requested a CENOMAR. So, hopefully she will have in time for her interview on May 15.

Good luck to everyone!

PhilippinesCENOMAR needed for visa interview?
I have been reading many of these posts and I am starting to get worried. I told Glyn that she did not need to worry about having the CENOMAR. Now, I am beginning to wonder if that was bad advice.

I know it is not required, but I wonder if she will have problems if she does not have it.

She is supposed to go on May 15 and has already paid for her document verification. Does it make sense for her to try to get one now?

Any advice or experience you can share would be great!

Thanks,

Tim

Glyn has an ATM card from an account that I opened here. There are no ATM fees involved and I am charged only the 1% foreign transaction fee. It really is the best way to go!

I have also used Remithome. It is very reliable! $10 flat fee, so it is good for send larger amounts.

Moneygram is also very good too.

Lol, never stopped lurking in the Canada forum but now usually in the Citizenship forum since Derek applied this month. More USCIS fun! :jest:

Look who the cat dragged in!!!!! Howdy!!!

Right now my Mom is in Vermont and may need some coaxing to come down south. She is getting older though and after years of taking care of her own Mom is realizing that it might be wise to move closer to family so that we can take care of her when the time comes. But she just loves Vermont and wants to stay there as long as possible. Both my brother and I went to school in Lexington, VA (which is in the Shenandoah) and I have been in Northern VA for almost 15 years so at least she knows the area and likes it. Beautiful, scenic and peaceful sounds like exactly what she is looking for.

Commuting in the DC metro area sucks no matter where you are, sigh. Sometimes it takes me almost 45 minutes to go about 5 miles as the crow flies, lol. And I really envy your husbands ability to telecommute. I can't really do it with my job but keep hoping that they will at least allow us to do a flex scheudule where I can work longer hours in exchange for a day off every other week.

Hope you guys are getting settled in!

Wheee! Welcome back, derekkj!

Where is your Mom living now? This area is not only beautiful and scenic, it's also very peaceful. I hear you about the commute. It's an hour on the VRE train. My husband is trying to find a bus like they have in Loudoun County (where we stayed for 4 months) so he can sleep better. LOL. He flies around the country a lot, though, so it's nice to be relatively close to the major airports. He also gets to work from home for 2 days of the week, so it's not as bad for him.

Yup, we bought a house in Alexandria and except for your typical homeowners ####### (tree branch falling on roof during last storm, replacing heat pump, broken electrical meter base etc.) we have really enjoyed it. Of course on days like those we wish we were back at Barton House so that Bobbie and Mike were there to take care of it all!

Agree too that Redfin is great. That's actually who we used to buy our house. Very addictive tho!

BTW, Krikit, I am trying to get my Mom to move down to the Haymarket/Gainesville area. I work on Capitol Hill too and would love to live out that way but figure the commute would kill me right now.

*waves at Flames*

I can recommend an apartment in Arlington---BArton house!!! Was awesome (for an apartment) Another VJ memeber lived there too at 1 time (they bought a house too) derekkj! .25 to was, .25 to dry! Staff super friendly, knew you by 1st name, awesome location! Only downfall, almost impossible to get in! Long waiting list, BUT if you knew someone that lived there, and they vouched for you, magically, you got near the top! We have 1 friend that stil resides there in a studio, and loves it!!

Canadato become an american citizen or not

I think to call the original post "America bashing" is not only exaggerating the comment but is also taking it out of context. I think it's perfectly alright for people to feel what they feel. We are not living their lives and so have no background on where they are coming from. People should be able to speak their minds without fear that they will be accused of "bashing" another country. When I say negative things about Canada I don't get accused of bashing it. Sometimes I think that people take things far too personally on this site.

Perhaps bashing was a bit strong, but I wasn't refering to the original post but replying to Trailmix and her statement that when you come to the Canada forum you are going to hear some not nice things about America and some Americans. I also said that it wasn't just a VJ issue but from people I know in the real world. I have no problems with people speaking their minds and lord knows I have my own criticisms of the US and Canada. I just find it sad that there are some people who are so unhappy with where they live, beyond the normal homesick, I miss my friends and family, I can't find decent bread, everything has HFCS in it, and Americans think I live in an igloo and drive my sled dogs to work.

Shoot, I am still bitter that I can't find decent bagels, pizza or Chinese food in the entire commonwealth of Virginia and I have lived here for 15 years!

Canadato become an american citizen or not

Oh Gawd. That's the area we're moving to.

Meh, unfortunately there are idiots everywhere. Some of the most racist people I ever met were in Montreal. Some of the nicest in Virginia.

If you come in to the Canada forum, from time to time, you are going to hear some not so nice things about America and some Americans - and I hope you don't let it make you feel bad, it's not personal.

What you said above, it's really no different to what others have said here about the U.S. - it's not their home (for a lot of them) - just like you didn't feel Canada was yours.

I hear what you are saying Trailmix and mostly agree. I try not to take it personally, but as an American I do find the America bashing (not only on VJ but from Canadians I know IRL) a bit sad and can get a bit defensive. I love the US and I love Canada and know that I could be happy living there too. Life is too short otherwise.

CanadaThe Vent Part Quatre
Not a vent but an update to a vent -

Derek finally had his rescheduled interview this morning and took the oath ceremony less than a half hour later. :) And I have to give a huge shout out to the employees at the USCIS office at Fairfax, VA. After years of being confused, frustrated, and generally pissed off by USCIS, these guys really bent over backward to help Derek out today. They even gave him his own private oath ceremony right after the interview. We were in and out in just about an hour! Though security did confiscate my tweezers, lol.

Now I can officially tell the rest of USCIS to kiss my ####.

CanadaThe Vent Part Quatre
Posted this already in the Citizenship General Forum but thought it was more appropriate to the Vent thread.

Derek applied for citizenship back in early August and it took months to get an interview. Today was supposed to be the big day. We got the the Washington, DC office in Fairfax, VA about an hour early and just as we arrived so did the fire department and police. Turned out to be some sort of threat and everybody had been told to leave the building. We waited until Homeland Security arrived to sweep the building with their dogs but a USCIS staff member said that he doubted the building would reopen anytime soon and recommended that we leave and have the interview rescheduled. So instead of standing around in the cold with no guarantee of being interviewed, we did just that. Have no idea when they can fit Derek in again but are hoping in the next month or so. Argh.:crying:

so I have been trying to find a pair of swim trunks for the hubster.. I looked at Walamrt and couldn't find any and was told they went on clearance.. umm, it is the middle of August in Los Angles, I am sure people still want to buy swimwear .. I looked at Kmart and they did have some there but all the ones that he would wear were the wrong colour or size... grrr... I did look online and they did have some there but the shipping was almost as much as the trunks :P...

I am going to check out Ross and Marshall's today

Love Lands End for swimming stuff. I think they have free shipping at the moment too.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionConditional Driver's license.....HELP!!!
QUOTE (WDC @ Oct 23 2007, 05:50 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
For the Virginia person - we just went throught the experience last week. It was a pain because the woman looked at the conditional green card that was expiring that day and kept refusing to look at the one year extension letter. We had to ask for a manager and the license was extended. But, not for the full one year! The DMV manager said that it was Virginia's law that the license would only be extended for one year from the receipt date of the notice. That means, my wife's license will now expire in July of next year even though the one-year extension is good through October on next year. Makes no sense at all. The DMV manager just kept saying that there was no guarantee that USCIS would lift the condition on the green card so why should they follow what the letter says. I asked where exactly it was in the Virginia state law that this policy was written. She said the laws change every day so the policy is not written down anywhere. So aggravating!

Wow! What a stupid system! wacko.gif I am so not looking forward to our next visit to the DMV. But as JT4/25 noted, going to another DMV may be our best option.

Derek's Virginia license also expires the same day as his GC. I have heard he should be able to use his NOA1 to renew his license and am keeping my fingers crossed, but you never know with the DMV. They almost refused to give him this license because he wrote his middle/confirmation name on his application and it was not on his birth certificate, grrrrr..

Anyway, if anyone has used their NOA1 to renew their license, how long did you get to renew for? I am thinking that since the NOA1 is only good for one year, then Virginia will only extend Derek's license for a year which of course means he will have to go back to the friggin' DMV again next year.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionPaperless Billing
QUOTE (cartoboy123 @ Oct 29 2007, 10:22 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
We're not at this process yet, however even for the AOS application and interviews we prepared paperwork that was just photocopied, and printed e-bills, statement of accounts etc. It was not a problem. We had a few bills that were multiple pages, and we just printed or copied the first page, basically making confirmation that the account, or bill was in both our names and our addresses. We included the photocopies of paper we printed from the internet, had a few "real" paper bills to add as well. No mention was made at the interview as to what these printed papers were, matter of fact, our paperwork was just glanced at and returned.

Carla rose.gif

Thanks, Carla! That confirms what I thought, but this whole process has me second guessing everything, sigh. wacko.gif

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionPaperless Billing
Just pulling the last of the material together for Derek's I-751 and realized that while some of our evidence is copied from actual documents, some of our accounts (ING Savings, car insurance, etc.) have only paperless billing and as a result our evidence was printed off of the internet. Has anyone submitted paperless bills before and had any problems as a result or does USCIS even care?

Also, when submitting copies of bills etc., have most people copied the entire bill or just the first page with names, addresses etc.?

I have a feeling that I am probably overanalyzing everything but better safe than sorry! laughing.gif

Hi Michelle, long time no see! Glad you are back if only for a moment!

Agree with everything everyone else has said. Don't wait too long if Craig needs the NOA1 to travel or for work, etc. Derek and I are sorta in the same boat though less for financial reasons and more because I just can't seem to get my a$$ in gear. But hopefully it will all be pulled together and out next week which will give USCIS a little less than 2 months to get the NOA1 out. Derek wants to go home to Canada for the holidays and his driver's license renewal is also dependant on the NOA1, so I know I can't procrastinate too long! laughing.gif
