Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionNot receiving Extension Letter

Thanks Zenaxe. However which state are you in? If you got a California driver license with I-551 stamp, which DMV office did you go to? And besides passport with I-551 stamp, current driver license what other documents do I need to bring with me to DMV?

For the Infopass, I have the 2 passport photos as they require on the website. Are there other documents I need to bring with me to get the I-551 stamp (besides green card, driver license)?

I'm in Arizona. I got my first license with the stamp and it was only valid for one year because I didn't have my green card or SSN. When I got my green card six week later I didn't change anything until the following year when my license expired. They would only then give me a license for another year which coincided to the expiration of the green card. So in August I have to return to the DMV and show them my stamp which means the DMV will only give me a license until Dece 18th....unless I get the NOA and i'll bring that document and buy me more time. It's a stupid pain in the A@@ by not getting this NOA, total booolshite.

For my info pass I brought my biometrics letter in case I do have that done...but they wouldn't allow it as they were busy. I brought my driver's license and green card and my passport so they could stamp it. That's it.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionNot receiving Extension Letter

Dear All,

Thank you very much for the clear answer on Infopass appointment. How about renewing California Driver License with I-551 stamp?

Has anyone tried to renew Driver License with DMV? Could you give some advice? I am worried that they will reject the I-551 stamp and the Driver License will be expired and I will have to retake the entire driving test again. On top of that I cannot drive to work. So please help?

I'm going to have to do the same thing with the stamp in August....should be just fine because the stamp is solid proof....I got my first license here without the green card and with the passport and I 551 in the first place. I wouldn't sweat it because it says this is an extension of the green card.

Got an infopass and received an I 551 stamp, extended for six months because my passport expires in December. Have to get a new passport and another stamp if the case isn't complete and green card in hand by Dec 2012....likley not given all the posts I'm reading.

my understanding is that the stamp and/or letter and/or green card confirms that you are a legal resident of the united states. when you travel abroad you will be required to prove that you are lawful resident upon entry on the US ( however, when i went to Mexico, i was required to provide the info before departing and upon re-entry) so regardless, when you go to a foreign country, you still need to check if your nationality requires to get a visa to go that particular country. for example, I'm French so i don't need a tourist visa to go to Brazil but my Husband does ( because he's a US citizen)

does that help? hope it does!

edit: Sorry i realize that i didn't answer your question: yes stamp/ extension letter covers work authorization and travel, but only on the US side if you will (and ability to stay of course since that's the purpose of the whole thing)

Hi Noth, thanks for your reply; and yes, it does help. I'm looking to make an infopass appointment because there is no extension coming in the mail. It would have been here by now lol....

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionNot receiving Extension Letter

Dear Visa Journey members,

We filed the ROC on April 30 and so far we have not received the Extension Letter (NOA) yet. We have already received the Biometrics Letter though.
We tried to call USCIS and talked to them extensively (with the Manager) however they insisted on not sending out another NOA. (I wonder if they even sent it out in the first place because there is no way to track it). We have these questions below that we already tried to search on Visa Journey but couldn't find the answers. I would be very greatful if experienced members could help:

1. Will Infopass issue us an I-551 stamp even our Green Card has not yet expired (will be expired on July 15)?
2. We are very worried because if they will not issue an I-551 stamp until the Green Card expired then how we should provide proof to CA DMV Department to maintain my driver license? The driver license is very important as I commute from work to home everyday and I also need this as an ID for daily activities.
3. If they issue the I-551 stamp before the Green Card expired, would the stamp be enough as proof for DMV CA? Do we only need to send a copy to DMV or we need to be present at DMV ourselves? Is there any other documents DMV require?
4. Has anyone (whose nationality would require visa to enter Canada) had problem enter Canada with I-551 stamp? We are traveling to Canada in September and we are worried if the new Green Card would not arrive by then and we need to show them the I-551, would it be sufficient for Canadian Officers?

Thank you very much in advance for answering and we are looking forward to the answers.

We are in the same boat; my green card expires mid August so have time. I submited our 751 package and it was received May 16th; I haven''t received the NOA1 extension etc; but have received the biometrics letter. You're further ahead because you spoke with a manager. I called and got a tier 2 response but basically the guy advised to sit around and wait some more. Apparently they have record of being extended and he read it out to me but for some reason wants to me wait although he said something about June 1st being the date on the NOA etc.....so it doesn't take long because the postal service is really quick here. Biometrics letter came within two days of issue date. But he advised I should wait to Friday then call again. That call took about an hour and a half between the first wait, first assist, then 50 minute wait and then talking to the guy who said to wait some more. I have no idea why they can't simply issue another notice. We can't do anything more with them even if we had two of them. they are related to one case with one case number and your alient number on it.

That said, you need the extension for the year while the case is processed and it's takingn a long time. You can get the info pass, and yes someone did do that on the May filers forum...have a look. They got an info pass appointment and got the stamp. The stamp gives the exact same authority as the NOA1....once you get that you can travel just like with your g/c and you can work etc. It's just an extension of the same authority you have with the permanent resident card.

the person who got the stamp ended up with a walk in biometric appointment as well. I don't expect anything in the mail because it's way too far gone. it was either never sent or it was misdirected by the post office. either way, nothing in hand. So i'm calling on Friday to figure out what to do next. The info pass is the option it seems.

I plan on traveling to Canada before my g.c expires but again the NOA1 or I 551 stamp gives the extension is my understanding.

the only thing i know for sure is that the stamp or the letter or GC is used to reenter the USA. so if your nationality requires a visa to go to a country, you should get it regardless.

as for DMVm, i don't know but i would go in person to renew. this is such special case that i wouldn't trust doing it on the internet.

hope this helps!

Is your understanding that the I 551 is only for travel or to cover work authorization as well as travel and ability to stay?

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionI-751 May 2012 Filers

Guys,
I already hit the 6 month mark, and no approval, at what point do we contact the USCIS if we haven't had any news? 7, 8, 10 months? A year?
Your input is highly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Kata

The time frame is around 6 or 7 months. If you call around the six month timeframe they'll tell you to wait for month seven....i'd wait a bit. I called a week short of six months and was told to wait until Nov 17th (at the time of the call) but I see others have called USCIS and have been told they are processing April 18th...that's the standard reply it seems. I'm going to wait for the 7 month line then will call them back. I just checked my online case and there have been no touches since 9/26th....It looks like the April filers are moving along nicely and getting approved and there has been one May filer with approval. It's coming, just have to be patient...

Me too!
I've been checking my case status every 3 hours over the last 4 days, this process is driving me crazy :bonk:
April filers started getting approvals when March filers were about 60% and something.
April filers are 61% right now, we should start getting some approvals here next week.
I also sent mine on May 22 and they got on the 23rd, so I think I still have to wait until beginning of December because 6 months of my process is exactly on Thanksgiving :(

April filers are definitely moving forward nicely so we are next in line !!

Thanks for your reply. So I called and discuss about my issue on getting a loan from bank. The guy who picked up my phone was pretty good and gave me a reference number. He told me he is going to expedite and hopefully i should be able to hear anything in 5 days, lets see. Regards, S Umer

You haven't posted a follow up....wondering if you were able to have this expedited. I'm not entirely sure how you can....not sure USCIS will move any faster because you entered into a private financial agreement by purchasing a home. But if you can.....kindly let us know lol !! Good luck and keep us posted !

I wrote a really long reply and it went somewhere I don't know. But anyway, don't worry. I went to Peru and went back a few days ago and IO in Miami knew exactly what the extension letter was. So, no issues at all.
Good luck to your wife!

Well I would hope there are no problems. The extension is exactly that and is absolutely valid. Like you guys, I had a touch on Sept 26th. In fact I called USCIS to follow up given the petition date of May 16th and essentially was told that I would have to wait the full six months ie Nov 17th before that office would do any follow up on my behalf because it's still within the normal processing timeframes. I'm not stressed about it but just want to get it done. I start a new job Nov 13th and it would be nice to give them the 10 year card rather than the expired GC and extension letter. Tis what it tis.

I was expecting mid-November anyways. November is 6 months from May, so it's not really out of the ordinary. Earlier would be nicer, but getting my hopes up has not proved me well lately. lol

Yes, it'll be what it'll be. I had an update/touch on my file on Sept 26th...prior to that it was only at the submisison of the biometrics in June...so something happened. Best to chill and wait....

I did. I traveled with my stamped passport, 'cause my Letter of Extension 'got lost' in the mail -they said they had sent it to my previous address, even though I had sent them an online change of address, an a-11 form with the change of address through the mail, and scheduled an info pass in which I was reassured they have my correct address- later on I received my 're-postaged' Letter of Extension (in which the 'previous address' they had sent the darn thing was the same address they re-sent it too -my current address- :D) sooooo I took the infamous Letter of Extension that arrived in the mail with me too..... AND -just to be on the safe side- the actual green card which was 5 days away from expiring.
When I finally made it to the immigration officer @ the Miami International Airport, she had me standing in front of her booth for 45 minutes. During this time, and even though I showed her: my stamped passport, the actual Letter of Extension, my driver's license AND the still valid green card, she kept on asking me all sorts of questions, while she examined the documents with these glass the jewelers use to authenticate diamonds: she asked me what's the name of the hubby, if I work, my current address, places I have lived before, asked me to show her the ticket to my connecting flight to Los Angeles, where does my husband work, for how long, where did he work before, my marriage certificate....she took my picture, took my fingerprints 3 times and finally turned the red light on and her supervisor approached the booth. It took him 5 minutes to clear me and off I went to the customs area where I was greeted by the biggest bullie I've ever encountered since I arrived in the States!!! He asked me to show him all my paperwork again -despite I was all cleared after the marathon with the immigration officer- and then very rudely asked me why had I traveled to Ecuador and stayed for a month and when I answered, he responded with a: "oh! Yeah?!! And what else!!!????? Then he asked me to see my marriage certificate again and asked: "why aren't you wearing your wedding band!!!???" and I finally got upset!!! Showed him my hand and replied: "because the airline had a one day delay on our flight!!!! I have been standing on lines for more than 12 hours, just stood for 45 minutes with immigration upstairs and was cleared and my fingers are swelling, but yes!!!! I can show you my wedding band!!!! I have it right here in my purse!!! Do you wanna take a look at it????!!!!!!" he said I could go and gave me a dirty look. I guess I was just unlucky. I guess people in the Miami International Airport where having a bad day...one thing is for sure: I'm not going anywhere again without my US passport!!!! :) hope the info was usefull and saves you some pain along the way!!!! ;)

wow sorry to hear about that. i went to Canada Aug 3 to Aug 7th. I fly there and back and without incident. I brought my passport of course and green card. That's it. I didnt' even bother to bring the letter of extension because my green card was still valid and current. I went from Phoenix to Calgary on to BC then back the same way. Not one problem. In fact, because I have a Nexus card, I cleared the nasty long security lines and went straight through. I can't believe what the hell you had to go through, wow. :ranting:

GRRR!

But thanks cheerily...

I knew something was amiss.

There are two types of NOA you are likely thinking of. The first NOA1 gives the extension for a year and if you don't receive that, as I had not intially, then you get a stamp in your passport ......the biometrics letters also shows NOA on it because it is a Notice of Action. But that letter shows ASC on it which is the biometrics notice and they do take that from you.

It sounds like you didn't receive the initial NOA1 showing extension. You can try to obtain a duplicate or you can get a stamp in your passport as long as your passport is valid. And they ony stamp the passport in accordance to the validity of the passport.

Good luck.

I had my biometrics today at 11am. We got there at 10:42 and left at 10:54. Pretty quick! :)
And now the waiting begins...

Congrats to all that completed biometrics !!

Ya now it's more hurry up and wait.....it's going to happen, just has to run its course. I'm expecting this to take 7 months, from biometrics, to approval to card production....month one is just ending haha

Hi,

Quick question, just to make sure. I may be going to Canada this weekend. My green card expired on June 24, but I have my NOA1. I'm pretty sure I'm good to go, but wanted to check. I don't need anything else do I?

You should be fine with your passport and the NOA1 .....have a great trip

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionI-751 May 2012 Filers

I haven't been around as we have been quite busy. But, I wanted to pass along some information. We tried to do an early walk-in for biometrics but they wouldn't let us through. We went back at the scheduled time and once his number was called, the appointment was so quick. So now we wait...

Hi Vanessa, looks like we both did the biometrics in Phoenix on the same day. My appt was for 3pm but got in a little earlier. I had tried to get an early biometrics appointment when I went in for the I 551 stamp on June 18th but was told it was Monday and a busy day; so I waited until my scheduled appointment. It probably really varies but they likely aren't too keen on having early walk ins...

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionI-751 May 2012 Filers

We sent out I-751 on 5/25 and received NOA on 6/12 (Receipt Date 5/31). But we have not heard anything since then about the biometric appoint and were getting a bit anxious... Wondering if anyone having Chicago ASC received an biometric appointment? Should I call to inquire about whether an appointment has been made at the local ASC? We are leaving for a trip in August so we really want to get the biometric done before then.

It appears that most people are waiting from 2 to 5 weeks etc for biometrics appointments. You're definitely in that window of time. It doesn't hurt to call USCIS to inquire. I don't think you can do an early or walk in because you need the letter in the first place. Those are done once you receive the ASC but want to have it done before the scheduled date. You can call for sure and maybe wait it out. If you're aren't leaving until late August you still have time. Also appointments are scheduled several weeks after notice date. For example, my ASC notice date was Jun 7th, I received it Jun 9th and the bio was for June 28th; that was my story but may be different for many others. Another person posted that they missed the bio and ended up having one done after the fact and it worked out for them. Good luck on that. Won't it be nice to not worry about these things??

woooww!! me hopes to get mine! The date on yours is so backwards, did it get lost somewhere?? But glad to know you got one . I would say, finally!!

But wait why do you say replacement? Did you request for one?

Greets, what happened was that I called USCIS to say I haven't received it blah blah and was advised to wait even longer, right. Then as you may recall, I went to get the stamp and got that making me valid until mid Dec just around the time my passport expires. So for giggles, I called USCIS again to inquire about the NOA and told them I hadn't received it. The woman I spoke with said she was going to put in a service request and, after a long painful discussion regarding the spelling of my name, address blah blah, she said someone would be in touch by mail within 30 days. I asked if this was to obtain a replacement NOA but she repeated that someone would be in touch by mail. Sooo I went with it; what else could it be? So a little bit ago, I get an email (ya by mail) from USCIS saying that they would be sending a courtesy NOA as I had not received one and would obtain in within 15 days or whatever it was...too lazy to check the letter. And then I get the NOA by mail ~!~ ..... I didn't officially request one but the basis of my call was to advise I had not received it.

So now I'm good to go until May 2013. the good thing is I can now get my license renewed (August expiration) to May instead of August to December as per the stamp, then I had to send off my stamped passport to Canada to get that renewed....then do another infopass and get another stamp in my new passport, then go to get my license renewed in accordance to that new date. It would have been a pain in the rump.....so just glad to have it because it simplifies life.

Now it's the countdown to the approval and final production of the card ! :D

We're the losers that missed our bio appointment. Well, we went to the biometrics place first thing this morning, and they took my husband's fingerprints. We told them we were late - it didn't seem to be a problem. Looks like we're ok. Whew!

Our actual biometrics appointment was scheduled for 6/28/2012. I added it to the Google Doc.

Sooooooo USCIS did sent me the replacement NOA1.....glad to have it, so this at least extends me to May and I don't have to worry about the passport issue at the end of the year. Yukira and Jim, if you don't mind updating my profile.

NOA is dated May 16, 2012; same date as when they received it.

Thanks !

HELP Please. We missed our bio appointment. My husband just found the ASC Appointment Notice and our appointment was 6/28/2012. Any know what we should do?

Sorry to hear....not sure what to do other than calling USCIS to reschedule asap. Good luck.

Another option might be to do a walk in and bring the expired letter with you. You may be able to get a walk in or you may have to get another letter sent out to you and new appointment.

Yay!

It's too bad the photo person was so strict. Like I said, if the person taking your picture says no smiling, then I guess you can't smile. But I still think it's allowed, technically speaking :) Like you said, you are smiling in the first one.

Ya who knows...maybe he is using old policy and thinks you can't and others say go ahead. it'll be interesting to read posts about whether people smiled or not just to see . you say your husband smiled

Oh wow. I will ask them. I hope my photo will be better this year because my 2-year GC one is just HORRIBLE :( haha
What did you bring to the appointment???

Hi lol too funny.....well my first two year green card had a decent picture of me actually. I'm not groovin on many pictures I take but this was ok. And I got to smile.....this one, looks like a guy staring into a camera....hate that. oh well.

Best to ask them at the time. I sat and started smiling for the picture and he said uh uh, no smiling; no teeth at all, they don't let you do that for green cards. Then i said funny my current green card has me smiling, and no problem there.

Anyway.....i brought my passport, letter for the biometrics apopintment, green card and all my normal ID. I went through security, then into the main waiting area. Keep in mind this is the Phoenix location.... then went up to the front where they had me file out a form (quick and easy ie name, color of hair, eyes, height, country of birth, country of citizenship etc.) then they gave me that form plus attached my biometrics letter (he wrote things on the letter) then attached my green card plus a number ....then you wait for the number to be called and go in. it was fast.

he asked for my passport and to see my greend card, plus bio letter.

pretty smooth process. when is yours??

Mital: You don't need the stamp if you have the NOA1. You are confusing that with people who did not get NOA1 at all.

BenAna: You can smile... my husband is smiling in his :) You have to have a natural expression (no big cheesy grins I suppose), but that doesn't mean you can't show teeth, like in other countries. Of course, there is a chance the photo taker is strict and says otherwise...
Here are examples of photographs that are good http://travel.state....mples_5300.html Note some of the "good" examples are smiling. The requirements for GC photos and passport photos are the same.

I was told in Phoenix that I was not allowed to smile; can smirk, this and that....but NO teeth. soooooo sat there like an unsmiling dude. I would have preferred a nice big smile......not sure if it varies or what but the guy specifically said not to show teeth ..... :D

Thank you Harpa Timsah!!!

Completed biometrics today; very simply and easy . But I was told specifically NOT to smile. Oddly I was able to smile for my first green card; not allowed to smile for a Canadian passport; my wife smiled on her USA passport. So no smiling for this green card. And I briefly saw the picture. ugh, love a redo oh well

bring on the rest of the case !

Hi! I sent my package May 15th and it was received at CSC on May 17th. I didn't receive my NOA or my biometrics letter yet, despite my check being cashed on June 5th. (However, I did call and was given my receipt number- when I looked this up, it confirmed that USCIS received on May 17th).

I scheduled an InfoPass last week, and got the I-551 stamp on June 22nd. Unfortunately, it's only valid for 3 months. When I asked if I could do my biometrics while I was there, I was told that they are currently 45 days + behind schedule, so they were completely booked.

I don't have much hope for my NOA anymore, but I'm still crossing my fingers that I'll get that biometrics letter soon :)

Hoping you get the biometrics letter soon. I only got six months extension due to my passport expiring in Dec...my g/c expires in August so really it's a 4 month extension. Too bad instead of a passport they can't simply issue you the NOA1....for pete's sake it's a US immigration office. If they have the authority to extend your green card via a stamp, i'm not sure why a simple extension letter on letterhead can't happen.

I called USCIS today for giggles just to see if I could get an NOA issued anyway....seems I like to torture myself. well after a long painful session with a person, whom unfortunately needed more experience with the language managed to tell me she issued a service request...and that they would be contacting me by mail. For what? I asked if they were issuing an NOA and all she repeated is that someone at USCIS would contact me by mail and to call me if they hadn't in 15 days.

You should be getting your bio letter soon and, if not, call them again and push for a tier 2 response

Consider doing an INFOPASS - http://www.uscis.gov...000082ca60aRCRD

especially if your GC is expiring soon. I scheduled an appointment via INFOPASS, mainly to have my passport stamped since my GC expires June 25th and I have not received the NOA that indicates my one-year GC extension. After having my passport stamped I asked the Immigration Office who extended my GC if I could try to proceed with biometrics since I'm in the office, so might as well, and she said yeah. When I tried to do a walk-in biometrics (because my original schedule is June 27), they gave an OK response so I went ahead and do my biometrics at the same time. I guess depending on how busy they are and on your situation, they will consider early appointments done prior to the original schedule.

Updating ErikaAndHamit :) When is the Receipt Date on your NOA letter? You need that date for the list ;)
I'd say interview percentage is like 5%. Since you are CSC filer, you'll get approved in 3 to 5 months?

It is 6/24! Thank you!

Thanks for adding me! Yea, I am going to give it a few days before I worry too much. Do you know how people get NOA's the next day after applying? I guess that's why I am worried. We did sign up in the past for email notifications, but it never worked! Oh well.

Wow, as for the biometrics, yes I'd reschedule for sure!

Hi there everyone. I filed ours on June 15th at the CSC, could you please add me to the list? I have not gotten an NOA1 yet, should I be concerned? How do you check online? Don't you need the number from the NOA1 to check case status? Thanks in advance for any answers I get. Good luck to us all!

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionBuying a house during I751 filing window and proof of joint ownership
My wife and I are a few months away from ROC but I plan on using the title from our house as well. Laws vary state to state but I would ask the notary at the closing if they could make a copy of the notarized title for you. That would be as good as the title after it is filed (and you are normally sent a copy). My guess is it will be much longer than 45 days before you get the title back. Keep in mind there is all kinds of paperwork involved in buying a house that should have both your names on it which you can copy and send which will be almost as good as the title.

The one document that comes to mind is I think it is called the HUD-1. It is the settlement statement that lists the buyers and sellers credits/debits. You usually get the first copy when you apply for a mortgage as part of the good faith estimate.

That or the actual loan document though that tends to be around 20 pages long.
